  • These ABC promos were created to promote the 1980 fall season. It wasn't a great campaign (in my opinion) so I didn't save many of them. Sadly I started the VCR late on the first one, so you will notice the beginning is missing. Based on the length, seems I missed the first five seconds.
Voiceover on the first two provided by the great Ernie Anderson. The third one is Dick Tufeld, most famous for providing the voice of the robot on "Lost in Space."

The ending animation was done by Marks & Marks on an HP desktop computer at Northrop.
Also, I wonder who did the music for the first and last promo?

Good knowledge - thanks for sharing! I figured that was Marks & Marks animation, but wondered how much they had to do with the rest of the promo? Doesn't seem to fit their style.

An HP desktop computer? How is that possible? Desktop computers didn’t have that kind of power in 1980.

@@trashyraccoon2615They used the same HP computer for the tactical graphics in WarGames, and the graphics there were done as wireframes and then tinted through color filters. I imagine they did something similar here, though the decorations at the end of the logo look like traditional slit-scan opticals.
(And yeah, you could get smooth animations like those even back then if you used a vector monitor. Atari was already making video games like Battlefield and Tempest this way, and Abel was doing their pre-visualization on E&S vector terminals.)

I remember hearing somewhere years ago that Crushing Enterprises (the same people who brought us "Proud As A Peacock") did the music for these, but that was back in the late 1990s/early 2000s and might not be accurate.

These promos were awesome, entertaining but corny. It was the time when tv was worth watching especially during prime time. Sadly, they don't do those kind of promos anymore. I hope the tv station will do those kind of things again with today's actors, talk shows and game show hosts band together and see if they can bust a move. That would be something. I miss those kind of promos alot and I hope someday the tv station will bring them back.

The last one was voiced by Dick Tufeld.

Oh that's right! I knew I recognized the voice but couldn't place it. I'll update the description.

You forgot Jill on the love boat segment. She was in the 1980 promo too.

As awkward as this one is in terms of choreography, it’s not as bad as 1978, when the stars just sat down on risers and clapped.

Another great digitization! Boy I gotta admit these are awful promos. They barely convey anything about these new shows. Confusing and overall lackluster.

@@VPR2B Ahhh that’s cool. I definitely think they’re worth uploading! Even bad old promos like this are priceless to me. For history! Thanks so much for all the work you put into this channel. It’s one of my all time favorites now.

@@trashyraccoon2615 Thanks! I'm working on some from CBS now (1978-1981) and hope to post them soon. CBS produced my least-favorite of the network fall promos, but will upload them for the history books.

@@VPR2B Haha, they’re hilarious. Checking them out now. Me and my partner both love BAD television just as much as the good stuff. We’ve been analyzing these spots as a chance to see what NOT to do and figure out what’s wrong with it. So they’re actually helpful. Perhaps one of the most obvious errors is having the background music with vocals that competes with the voiceover. How did that get approved? Boggles the mind. I spent a decade at Comcast Corporate, and I’m still in the business more or less, just FYI
