Hey everyone. Please keep in mind that Japan isn't in Europe. So if it was released in Japan, it can't be in a Left in Europe episode. But thanks for the suggestions!

    For the SNES:
Tintin in Tibet and Tintin: prisoners of the Sun.
pretty hard games but they're also based on an belgian- franco comic series, that is very popular over here.

  • @HannuPulli
    @HannuPulli 10 лет назад +2

Besides being slower PAL is higher resolution than NTSC. Most video game systems didn't utilize this but instead squashed the picture so that the pixels weren't square. Later video games are only in 60Hz even in Europe as most later PAL systems accepted lower resolution 60Hz with thicker scanlines just as well as native 50Hz.

The Smurfs for the SNES and Mega Drive is a game that was left in Europe, even when Nintendo Power made a big fuss over advertising it like it was going to come out in North America in 1996.

    • @syncmonism
      @syncmonism 2 года назад +1

Interesting. I guess re-runs of it were being shown there a lot still in the 90's. In North America, most people born in 1989 have likely never seen He-Man, or even heard of it. Here in North America, i think it stopped getting much air-time (especially on the most widely available channels) some time in the late 80's, and well before the 90's.

True fact : A decent PAL conversion (rare!) can be better than the NTSC version, since it has more lines in the display. DOA 2 on Dreamcast is full speed, and full screen PAL on the 50Hz option. Shame more developers didn't make the effort.

I was about to say that North America may be the only continent where all of its countries use NTSC, but I didn't notice that you corrected yourself. However, that's only the case if you don't count Greenland, which is considered part of Europe due to being part of the Danish Realm. South Korea, among other countries, use NTSC as well, but no one thinks about those countries. Also, France has their own standard called SECAM, which is also used in Russia and Mongolia. Also, they changed the name from Mega Drive to Genesis to signify a new beginning as well, not just because of Trademarks. Basically, they changed the name because of trademarks, and they chose Genesis to signify a new beginning.

I don't know if someone already said about this, but Asterix was released for the Master System here in Brazil too. It was a popular console with good sales and that's why many european exclusives were available in the country.
And there's more: the publisher from Brazil (Tec Toy) made a partnership with Sega and created many "hacked games" for the console with famous cartoon characters. They made one Asterix hack called "TV Colosso", based on a famous TV show with the same name.

It's a darned shame that the He-Man game wasn't very good. It's a decent license that lends itself to a good hack & slash game or maybe even a light action RPG. But that game you showed? It puts the "cringe" in Cringer (the tiger).

I was just going to mention that! It's on Netflix - or it was. I mean to go back and watch the rest of it, if it's still available. It's a shame it was cancelled after one or two seasons - the same fate of the more recent Thundercats remake, which I heard was also a vast improvement over its predecessor. Cartoon Network seems to have a way of greenlighting 80s nostalgic reboots, then dropping all support :/

Great episode! Too bad that Taz game on the 64 isn't import friendly. It actually looks pretty fun! Was Hammerin' Harry a Europe exclusive? That would be a cool one to hear about but I can't remember if it came out elsewhere. I laughed pretty hard at the end scene with the impossible to pronounce names. That would make a cool episode like "Games with Unpronounceable Names." Great episode as always! And I look forward to more!

The Asterix part made me nostalgic. Not just because of the franchise itself, which was a significant part of my childhood, but also because the Master System game was one of the video games I ever owned (along with Land of Illusion and Sonic the Hedgehog, which was built into my MS). It's funny how a console with a not very impressive game library had some really good licensed games.

PAL is a pretty terrible standard honestly. The resolution is ok, but the refresh is absolutely awful. I can't stand to look at 50Hz, it gives me a headache. I only own one PAL game...Metroid Prime for the Gamecube (the PAL version is far superior to the US release, it has finished/completed lore, improved graphics, and a couple of the boss fights were fixed/finished). Fortunately, it runs just fine on a US Gamecube and will run in 60Hz (and you can use Swiss to force it to 480p if you have an HDMI adapter).

As far as I'm aware Asterix and Obelix are popular in the entire Europe, apart from UK.

      Kinan Arous
I think it's something to do with English speaking countries, it's the same deal in UK and I am willing to bet it's similar in Australia for example.

Kinan Arous Americans pay little attention. Tin Tin was shown in the 90's on Nickelodeon and a CGI movie adaptation of Tin Tin was made a few years ago here in America yet it wasn't popular.

There are a lot of bande dessinée/franco-belgian comics video games exclusive to Europa. A ton of Asterix( and Obelix) games, the only series that puts out games to this day, The Smurf, a few of them actually found their way to the US, Lucky Luke, Tintin and Spirou et Fantasio. Can't tell you if all of them are good, but the Infogrames tend to be good. And there is Papyrus for the GBC which is also pretty good.
Hard to market those games to you since you don't appreciate the bande dessinee.

Not everyone else uses PAL. Many countries use SECAM or PAL/SECAM. And the first of the Asterix games on the SMS actually did make it over here.
Anyway, there are a number of Euro titles I want to try, but modding a console and/or the different speeds turn me off. Most of the games Europe got but we didn't were also released in Japan, and most of the good ones aren't too text heavy, so I'd rather just buy those versions.

There was a great Asterix arcade game, a beat-em-up made by Konami (1992).
AFAIK it was never ported to other systems so you'd have to emulate to play it, but it's worth checking out. It's basically like other Konami beat-em-ups from that time: a bit shallow and repetitive, but really fun and well made with lots of charm.

I imagine most of the Asterix games stayed in Europe for commercial reasons due to the comical Gauls popularity in France, Belgium and Holland. I would doubt John Madden football games would sell well in the UK though I know some were released on the Mega Drive. I think fewer games are marketed for specific regions ie Europe North America, South America , Asia and Australasia these days, particularly as Japanese role players are gaining world wide popularity and the DVD game format is more economically viable than cartridges so publishers can take a chance.

It is kinda silly how easy for most european TV sets it is to run NTSC signal with, while also having PAL compatibility and apparently the superior PAL60. Apparently while NTSC is 59.94 Hz, PAL60 signal is true 60.0Hz and runs that extra 0.06 frames faster. Of course some older CRT TV sets are not NTSC compatible but a PAL TV compatible with pretty much everything is pretty common to come by.

    Dodonpachi Resurrection Deluxe Edition
for the 360. I'm sure there is a version for Japan but the PAL version runs great on US 360s and right now Play Asia has a killer deal on it.!

He-Man was massive in Europe probably even more so than the US. The 2002 series was made in the US though and it isn't French Anime in any shape or form so it does indeed seem very odd indeed.

  • @MrJechgo

    HOLD IT!
IIRC, we received 4 Asterix games total in North America:
    - That crappy Genesis game you mentionned (Great Rescue)
    - That Asterix beat-em-up arcade game by Konami
    - An Asterix SNES/PC platformer game by Infogrames
    - Asterix & Obelix: Kick Buttix for PS2
The rest... yeah, pretty much land-locked in Europe. However, there's a good reason for that: comic books in Europe are different than in the US, with different art styles, stories, genres and of course characters, so if one would make a video game with a European comic book, it would be wiser to release it in Europe first, since it's the main market. If the popularity doesn't catch on in America, well... what,s the point of releasing it there?

Really cool episode, I laughed at the beginning when Dave said that europe is the only place where PAL was used. :D
Some games that did not get North-American release are:
Donald Duck in Deep Duck Trouble for Master System, it was released only in europe and brasil.
Mr. Gimmick for NES, was released in europe and japan. As I understand it's not very import friendly and it is expensive.
The Firemen for SNES, released in europe and japan.
Cannon Fodder for SNES, I think it was european exclusive.
Freshly Picked Tingle's Rosy Rupeeland for Nintendo DS, only released in europe and japan.
Go-Go Cosmo Cops for Nintendo DS, only released in europe.
It would be great to get a episode where you show games that were released only in america.
