That was really informative. Thank you! Now I understand why my psychiatrist wants me to get off quetiapine because clozapine affects way more receptors. So there's no need to take two antipsychotics. I have bipolar II and major depression btw. I wish you all success and bliss

Not sure if it is scientifically valid but it can be "useful" to use a more stimulating antipsychotic by day and a low dose of a more sedative one such as quetiapine before sleep. Each med has its own effects which can be used to their advantage.

Help! I'm on an anti-psychotic and have no emotions! Everything is dull and colorless. How long after stopping them will it take to get my emotions and feelings back?!

    • @lifeline369

No offense to the person who recommended white tea. I understand that you mean well, but this is a serious issue and there is very little (if any) research that significantly concludes that there is a relationship between drinking tea and reducing psychotic side effects. It's true that anti-psychotics negatively impact your emotions. They're mood stabilizers, which means that they level out both manic and depressed episodes. If the effects of the drugs are unbearable, contact your psychiatrist. It may be necessary that your dosage needs to be manipulated, or replaced with an atypical anti-psychotic drug. Best of luck!

this is a very interesting thread as a pre-med student studying pharmacology, as well as someone who has endured a friend who used these medications. i am more often than not touting eastern medicine and recommending avoidance of all pharmaceutical CRAP which can be thrown at us. as is mentioned in the video, these pathways are particularly complex and not well understood. at least first generation anti-psychotics were meant to be used in a mental institution. in fact many of the drugs prescribed are still given in chunks one week at a time for two reasons: there's a small risk of a huge medical issue, so they need to be doing blood tests a lot; but also they're meant to be used in concert with loads of counseling. as an eastern medicine advocate i recommend you use just counseling, and get your blood tested thoroughly to see if you have something like a magnesium deficiency (just as example) or anything else which can be fixed by a change in diet/lifestyle. HOWEVER because you seem to be on this regimen i recommend you stay your course! you are likely on this stuff for a reason. don't listen to people telling you to stop it right away as that may be hazardous to your health. trust your therapist. it's easy to make the connection between drugs and money, but as a future western medicine practitioner i can tell you that i will be doing everything i can to make my patients healthy and well (there is a lot of science behind these drugs, while eastern medicine isn't well developed because mental disorders are not well accepted in lots of cultures, so research is sub-par.) the tools western medicine docs use are different, but you can't make the assertion that they are evil based on the tools they use. these regimens are designed to help you find a base line, council you into recognizing your ups and downs, and self regulating them into having smaller swings. swings are normal, swings in which you want to hurt yourself or whatever a manic would do (buy everything they see, have lots of sex etc.) are less than optimal for most people. gradually your practitioner should be looking to take you off the drugs. speak to your mental health practitioner about the steps they intend on taking to get you to "functional" (excuse the offensive terminology - i lack better terms so far) without drugs. IF they don't have a plan, or they indicate you may be on these drugs for the rest of your life THEN you should seek out a different mental health practitioner immediately, without changing your regimen until you have discussed it with at least one mental health practitioner.

Your thoughts on loxapine being the actual first atypical when classified as a Typical? Clozapine is extremely similar in structures. The first prototype of Atypicals is loxapine not clozapine.

If you want to screw up the chemical homeostasis in your body, take antipsychotics.

"Anti-psychotics" (neuroleptics) do not exert their therapeutic (pharmacological target) effects on psychosis (positive symptoms of schizophrenia) by rectifying a brain abnormality, such as a chemical imbalance, nor do they target any physiological process that produces the positive symptoms of schizophrenia, but rather neuroleptics suppress symptoms of schizophrenia, by a profound slowing up and dampening down of mental processes by putting a brake on dopaminergic neurotransmission - they arrest natural brain function. Neuroleptics are major tranquilizers, neurological inhibitors, suppressants and depressants of the central nervous system. Neuroleptic means "nerve seizing". Neuroleptics work to treat psychosis by disrupting normal brain function in the reward (mesolimbic) pathway, and in the mesocortical pathway - connecting to the frontal lobe (the part of our brain that makes us human). Neuroleptics do not exert their psychosis-treating effects by targeting an underlying brain abnormality, such as a chemical imbalance, i.e. dysregulation of the dopaminergic neurotransmitter system, ie. overactivity of dopamine neurotransmission in the dopaminergic pathways: mesolimbic (reward), mesocortical (humanity), nigrostriatal (target of antiparkinsonian agents), and tuberoinfundibular (hormones, i.e. prolactin). Neuroleptics do not reverse any known disease process. There is no (sufficient) evidence that a lesion in the dopaminergic pathways is the primary cause of schizophrenia. Neuroleptics seize the central nervous system, dampen down dopaminergic brain activity, suppress function by occupying 70% - 90% dopamine D2 receptors. Neuroleptics are first and foremost psychoactive drugs. Their psychoactive effects (their global alterations of physical and mental states) treat symptoms of schizophrenia. Neuroleptics are not antidotes for psychosis. Neuroleptics are not disease-specific treatments in schizophrenia, but rather mind altering agents producing such mental and physical alterations that suppress symptoms (superimpose upon the symptoms that they are treating). Neuroleptic effects (target and side effects) may be useful in treating (dampening down) psychotic states, but that depends on the context. They do not exert their therapeutic effects by reversing or rectifying a disease process, nor are they curative agents; they cannot cure psychosis, nor prevent, nor decrease the probability that one will become ill or lessen the severity of the illness (quite the contrary!).

CAN SOMEONE HELP ME?? I have been diagnosed with non-specified psychosis and affective disorder. I take 1.5 mg of Risperdal. I never had hallucinations, only delusional thoughts. If I stop taking them I will have the feeling of burning inside my brain, I won't be able to think and I will definitively loose contact with reality (wich is the case now) without any hallucinations. I have lost all my emotions and affects due to illness not because of the meds. I feel without mind and spirit or soulless not because of intention. I also mention that i have blur vision with taking or not taking medication. If someone knows about my situation please answer me asap i will really apreciate it.

You should get your eyes examined by an ophthalmologist if you have blurred vision. You should use eye drops and take fish oil. You could have dry eyes. You also need psychotherapy. You should go to an outpatient mental health treatment center. My answer to your question maybe a little late. I see you post this 3 years ago. I hope I am able to help you. Good Luck.

Haloperidol and Seroquel were the worst drugs ever, I can't believe they are FDA approved. But Perphenazine has been good to me, so far, no side effects, I feel normal for once. Oh and a few years ago, the doctor prescribed Cymbalta and lithium. I almost successfully committed suicide. Is there going to be a class-action lawsuit in my lifetime? I'd love to get in on that.

If the dopaminergic theory was accurate, you would expect immediate relief of psychosis soon after the atypical meds are taken.....but it takes weeks.
Honestly, from experience, I can say sleep is the best cure, and a holistic lifestyle. Also I believe many schizophrenics are on the autism spectrum.
