Using Guitar Pedals on Vocals -

- In this episode I upgraded my vocal Pedalboard with a Surfy Industries Surfy Bear Compact, spring reverb unit and I show all the tweaks and tips to use guitar pedals live on vocals.
In a Pedaltrain Nano + I use a JHS Colourbox, an Ibanez Ad Mini analog delay and the brand new Surfy Industries SurfyBear Compact.
I rarely bring a sound engineer with me to the shows, só this helps me to get the tone I want on my vocals. I basically use the same approach on my vocals I use on guitar tone.
If you buy from this links I get a small commission from Amazon.

While I agree there's a lot of talking, there's ways you can edit so it stays interesting for everyone. I usually find opening with a sound demo in a mix, then going back and forth between talking and sound demos to be the most engaging. I'm definitely interested in what you have to say, and I like hearing the reasoning behind the choices, but having a short sound clip between paragraphs really helps.
Thanks for the tip!
I personally like him explaining the way he is I feel like is all about perspective and taste in how we want certain videos to be presented to us, sometimes we in a rush other times we have time, but honestly he did a great job at giving us such example, if we want, we can also speed up in settings 🌟🤙
But def understand what you are saying and makes lots of sense aswell, its like a positive feedback and its is indeed a great advice to make it even more interesting by doing what you advise 👌
Thanks for your support
This video is exactly what I was looking for! I’m trying to put together a similar setup. Thank you for sharing your trial and error and saving me some time!
You’re more than welcome!!!
Thank you Budda! I'm rather new to the music scene and I am starting the journey. Earlier this week I was wondering about using a guitar effect pedal for vocals and found this video to be very helpful!
Great to know that
Thanks
If you skip the first 11 minutes, he finally stops talking and starts actually using the gear.
I like to have context on my reviews . And they are for free in case you missed it!!
THANK-YOU 🙏
Nice demo. Thank you. Good strong voice. ☮️
I just ordered one today & I’m exited to get a better vocal-sound. Plug-ins just aren’t getting-it done.
This is a very simple, yet effective way of getting great vocal effects
You’re awesome, Budda.
Thanks a lot
The dynamic microphones that I use are a Pyle PDMIC59 (SM58S style) & PDMIC78 (SM57 style). That said, each comes with an XLR to 1/4 TS 15 foot microphone cable. End of the day, a $ 25-30 Klon(e) pedal is basically all you need when you have a Reverb built-into the combo amp or amp head. The guitar amp that I use is a also a solid state 1x8 open back combo, it's the Pyle (PVAMP60 Reverb) that has a built-in Reverb effect consisting of 2 Reverb control knobs for length & depth. The Klon is a transparent OD, has a tone control thru the treble knob to EQ and a volume & gain control knob. The Klon pedal can be used as a clean boost with a guitar and so it functions that way with a microphone. No microphone impedance match transformer necessary with these Pyle products. The Pyle microphones are built to have an output impedance spec of 600 Ohms, so it falls into the range of 50-600 Ohms category for a professional grade microphone. Plenty of volume with the Pyle amps 60W max output. Really just a solid & modest low cost PA system. These mics are good with any guitar amp combo, solid state or tube. Also a 5-6W pedal amp with passive cab of your preference is a nice little configuration to practice your vocals with.
Digital reverb is getting better but it is not up to the unique, natural sound of a spring reverb. Yet, at least. You da man, Budda !!
I really love it!!! Thanks
I can't believe some of the shit comments. Thanks for the great information and showing us how you as a professional shape your sound.
Thanks a lot for your support. That’s the goal of this channel
The Drive into the slapback sounds fantastic!
I love it
This must be in the Top Three most fun channels for musicians on YT. I Love the closeups too!
Thank you so much
Your singing voice is amazing!!!
Thanks a lot
Hi Budda, great video as always! I wonder how can I achieve this setup without buying the JHS Colour Box, it's a nice tool but quite expensive, specially if I only use it as a vocal live tool. Would a regular DI passive box work similarly combined with a BOSS GE7 and a boost (plus delay and reverb, of course 🤘😎)?
Thanks man!
This video is helpful. Im putting together my first vox pedal board. The surfy bear reverb and Ibanez delay sound good. Im not sure the colour box is enough distortion... could be ok. The journey continues.
It’s exactly that. A journey
Great voice! Cool set up. I have a Colour Box v2 that I still need to try w vocals. Would you ever consider adding a compressor pedal pre Colour box?
The colour box is a preamp and it already compresses
You could use an Mic impedance transformer (like shure A85F) in front of the Colorbox, then you wouldn't have to worry slamming and distorting your effects. Its a cheap tool, but essential (for me) using guitar effects with vocals.
The Colour box has a 20db pad and xlr in
@@BuddaGuedes ah shit, of course! Take care man!
No worries
Hi Budda! Great video. I just wanted to ask how you muted the wet fx by bypassing the colorbox? My one sends a signal from both outputs whether byassed or activated so i still get wet fx just without the colorbox color
Mine doesn’t send through the jack out when it’s on xlr mode
The vocals are distorted...unless that was intentional?
That’s exactly the goal. If you listen to any of the classic reviews. Even on soul and jazz records that happened a lot.
How do I connect everything to the mixer and sound speakers? does it all need to be connected to a mixer? Or can it be connected directly to an amplifier or sound speaker?
It might be able to connect directly to the power amp, because the jhs colour box is already a preamp
Very helpful tutorial !
Great I’m glad you like it
can you make a video step by step how to set up your rig? and what you need exactly , mic ... to pedals, then to di to match impedance ? then to interface.. then daw? ..i must be doing something wrong , was hoping the walk through....great video anyway thanks!
I’ll plan it for later! Thanks a lot.
@@BuddaGuedes awesome!!
👍🏻
Get a shure a85f and connect to any pedal. After get pedals get an active DI. Then go to the preamp
I’m using the Jhs Colour box for distortion not just as a preamp
Killer video Budda! Very insightful into how to set up a solid vocal rig. Did you figure out if you get feedback using eq of the colourbox? Curious to know if you had an issues. I've seen vids of live sound engineers where they make a vocal pedalboard with 7 band eq and they show how to find the frequencies that feedback. In that video, he just turned down those specific frequencies. If you could let us know if you had issues with feedback using this rig live, that'd be awesome. Thanks Budda!
I’ve never had feedback issues at all
Didn't know anything for me 😮😮
Great vid ! When running live to you have to use 2 channels on the mixing desk? One for the colour box and one for the delay/reverb and DI?
Do*
Usually I use two but in case of necessity I might use just the one coming out of the reverb and delay
Thanx for the great work!
I wonder how the overdrive/ saturation of the JHS would sound with a higher voice - tenor or falsetto. Does it still sound natural or is it getting too extreme?
Thank you.
It’s very natural sounding
They do have a nice analog type sound to it..
Yes they do
I connected my mic into my pedal and then back into an amp and no sound :( why? help please
What mic and Pedal are you using ??
Nice! No need for impedance match adapter Low to Hi Z ?
The jhs already has the impedance solved
You mentioned that when you use this setup playing live that you have the pedals going into a Triton DI. Is there a specific reason for that? Or would that be normal to use in a live performance? Also is a preamp required for a setup like this or could you skip the JHS and go straight into the Ibanez analog delay pedal?
You could skip the preamp but I’m using it for overdrive on my vocals
@@BuddaGuedes cool yeah, preamp def helps make things a bit louder. What about the Triton BigAmp DI?
It’s a small di but any di will work
I need a help... I have rode videomicro but i wanna use my guitar pedal as an audio interface (I'm using zoom G3X digital multi effect for guitar). But when i connect my microphone to my guitar pedal, I can't hear nothing. What should I do? Thank you..
That’s probably because the mic needs phantom power
@@BuddaGuedes "phantom power"=48v . I was wondering how my 48v interface would respond to having a pedal in series? Sm57 needs phantom power so how are you doing this?
The SM57 doesn’t need phantom power
Woooh this is some real geek shit here and I like it. More audio examples tho pls
Thanks for your comment.
I use a Waza Craft Blues Driver as a mic pre lately and I'm surprised how good the tone is through my daw. Have you ever tried Radial VocoLoco? I'm looking at that or the colorbox.
I’ve never tried the vocoloco because I have the Colour box but I’ve been looking for it
No mic impedance matching? Just mic direct into guitar preamp pedal?
This pedal has an xlr input low impedance for microphones
@@yuribolognini Yeah, I was using an xlr to 1/4" adapter into the pedal. I ended up getting the voco loco and I put q talisman plate reverb in its loop. I like it
Thanks for the fast response both of you.. I was asking about the blues driver 😅. So the XLR to 1/4" is a normal adapter or those special impedance matching ones? Does every XLR to 1/4 adapter also match impedance? Sorry abou my ignorance in electronics.
Damn good singer. Give yourself some credit to
Thanks a lot
Hi, what if i only use guitar pedal dig reverb for my vocal without any other supplements would it still work?
It will work of course but you will need an xlr to Jack and there might be a tonal difference due to impedance change.
Hello Budda, I have a big question, I have been struggling trying to conect my microphone to pedals that are not for microphone, i mean, guitar pedals, they just don´t do anything to my sound or just saturate, i have search the colour box of jhs and unfortunatly, is very expensive for me, so please, could you tell us what kind of pedal or mechanism, we need without an specific brand, to use the instrument pedals on our microhones? because i have seen several videos trying to answer this question an none of them really help, they just show their pedal configuration but don´t explain how they make it work. Thanks Budda, I love your channel
It will work better with a high impedance mic, like the green bullet for example.
But I think you can use any mic (except condenser mics) with guitar pedals as long as you have a cake making it go from xlr to a guitar Jack.
You just need a certain type of cable. Get an xlr to quarter inch. Some companies it xlr high z. But if you type that first thing in you’ll find it. That’s all you have to have
They don’t change impedance!! With the JHS COLOUR BOX you can use the xlr
why do you use the Triton Audio BigAmp Direct Box in the end in a live situation? is it to lower the impedance ? i know the guitar chain youre running is hi-z .. but are you bringing down the impedance to into a board? but boost with phantom power? what do you go into when you make the videos? just for home use. thanks..
I’m using the big amp A DI to transform the high impedance signal to low impedance xlr, and plugging into a mixing desk.
@@BuddaGuedes thank you ...for always replying! your'e always big help!!
@@BuddaGuedes does that DI need phantom power to active if so ? and not harm the chain of pedals.
You’re welcome
This one needs phantom power but you can use a passive one
It takes this fuckin guy like 40 minutes till he Evan gets into anything
Stupid - a*s - comment. 👎
Great vid. Thanx a lot!!!
Thanks
@digitalsea You could at least make an effort to spell correctly . But you know you don’t have to watch it, right?!?
Get to the point.had to faward just to here the reverbs.
You know that’s an option, right?!?
I wish you made the thumbnail more scary like maybe make your eyes totally White your face looks like it's melting and a whiten your teeth a lot that would be great clickbait
Eh! Eh! Maybe you’re right
to much talking
Come on dude....WAY too much talking...seriously
You can always choose to not watch it
I agree. We just wanna know the possibilities
@@BuddaGuedes Keep a win/win mindset. "Also/and," not "either/or." Your discussion is very important -- for some people. Please keep it. The demo is very important for pretty much everyone. The easy solution is to just tell people early on where in the timeline the demo starts. Then the people who want to can fast forward.

Very constructive comment. Thanks a lot for bringing the peace and sharing your thoughts. I’ll keep that in mind
Reverb sounds like crap
Really!!!!?
