What the heck is that phone mic! I love it! Love how the lyrics reflected mundane phone conversations too, matching the feelings we associate with that tone. It’s got such a hollow crisp sound, despite also clearly getting some proximity effect. Really cool. Do you hear yourself through it while recording like on a real landline?
I would have never dreamed i would be liking music like this. All because i was fascinated by guitar pedals and a harp. I'm 56 and have always been into hard rock so this is all really new and interesting. Thanks for having her on.
I wholeheartedly believe one of the biggest disservices one can do to themselves is to convince themselves they don’t like certain kinds of music. there is so much value in everything when it comes to music. i’m glad to hear you’re starting to broaden your horizons.
For real, how does one of the best vocalists I've ever heard fly under the radar until this point in my life? Thank you for bringing her to our attention!
Everyone's talking about the music but nobody's talking about the production value of the video. Voiceovers and split screens and a dozen camera angles...Nice editing, you two!
This absolutely blows my mind dude. I had no idea you could convert a voice signal to an instrument signal and then modify it using pedals. It's such a cool idea and Courtney does such a great job explaining her process and pedals she uses to create these amazing sounds. It's just really really cool. Thank you for sharing this with all of us!
You’ve GOTTA hear “Shiny Eyed Babies”. Bent Knee’s whole discography is brilliant, but that album… it changed my life. Hangs on my wall. I’m wearing the shirt right now, coincidentally. Okay, I’m a superfan, so take my word for it!
Let's be honest.. doing falsetto "ooohs" with a ton of reverb and modulation every voice sounds incredible and "angelic". Me personally i found it quite boring, my opinion, i hope nobody gets offended
Exactly this is not easy at all. Just the looping alone is so difficult. Plus she knows the nuisances of each pedal. That comes from hours of experimentation.
I just played your album while driving my 8 year old son home from camp. He didn't speak once on the way home. I asked him if he was okay; he said yes but that he felt something different inside of him and described it as feeling peacefulness. We love your album!
This is so great! I'm a huge fan of guitarist Bill Frissell, who is a master effects pedal user. His music with the pedals sounds so organic. I think Courtney Swain succeeds at making her sounds organic, too. Beautiful. Cheers!
Not only a video with Courtney but a video and an EP?!?! I couldn't have asked for more. Thanks Emily! And by the way people, if you don't know Courtney's band Bent Knee go listen to their music they are amazing!
This is a magical video. To hear that beautiful voice through pedals was beyond words. The creativity of taking a harp and singing (that’s unique by itself) is astounding. The whole mix of men and women making music, having fun, being artistic, demonstrating it and transcending genre is a life-enriching thing.
Hey Emily, thank you for introducing me to Courtney and Bent Knee! Because there are so many musicians all over the world, there will always be incredible artists that we miss, and this was one for me! Bent Knee just became an instant favorite band, the kind that makes you feel like a different person after you hear them for the first time.
Many, many years ago (more than 40, shall we say), I used to use distortion and phaser pedals exactly this way recording on an old reel to reel (sos) machine. So much fun.
In the age of autotune it is so refreshing to hear a vocalist whose pitch is so incredible, what Courtney does simply wouldn't be possible otherwise. Thank you for daring!
You know a really popular guitar pedal is a pitch shifter , it auto tunes your guitar to a higher or lower pitch , auto tune has been used in rock music since like forever , the Beatles used samples, John Lennon used a drum machine etc , musicians will use any new theology they can get hold of. She uses a pitch shifter pedal on this video , which is auto tune
@@valley_robot auto tune is a little bit different, it makes adjustments to pitch in real time and it also doesn't let the original sound pass through unprocessed. Harmonizers traditionally just add an extra pitch, although they have been used for pitch correction. But it's a slow, painful process. Courtney is singing over loops, delays, and reverb, that's a recipe for disaster for most folks, and I daresay most name vocalists wouldn't take it on. She's great.
This is great - a reminder that you can make music in so many different ways and it is always valid. Reminds me of singing through my guitar pickups to get effects on my voice, but I did that to sound ghoulish - this sounds fantastic.
Really inspiring stuff!! It’s always cool to see people using guitar pedals in unexpected ways, and I think that especially a lot of the knob twisting brands like Chase Bliss or Meris come alive when they’re used in a context where the artist can manipulate the controls instead of choosing a setting and sticking with it for the duration because they can’t bend over in the middle of the song to change things.
YEAHH!! I’ve been listening to Courtney swain since 2019!! I loved between blood and ocean and You know what they mean!! It’s real awesome to see this!!
I think you guys should make an animation , of course with yall music, but also with characters with your regular voices, you both have warm, humour filled mello vibey voices ....lovely stuff 👾
absolutely enthralling music, i lost myself for a good chunk of the video. the music feels like it grabs my heart and gently but firmly moves it. absolutely wonderful
Courtney is incredible, whether performing with Bent Knee or solo. The music on this collab EP cuts through all the noise and touches a sacred space where the purity of sonic bliss originates. Simply marvelous.
Every time Courtney showed a new pedal I went 😳, without fail. Even going through your collection, the way she explored landed on so many killer moments. What a cool collab, will be listening in full very soon. 🙏🫡
the way that you look at courtney shows so much respect and adoration. that really stuck out to me. courtney seems like a really great person, and that comes out in her and bent knee's work.
I’m so intrigued by the creativity here & dimensions you get out of this 5-6 pedal chain! And What an inspiring collaboration.. I look forward to more!
I was watching this thinking how amazing Ms. Swain sounds and how I wanted to listen to more of her stuff and then she said she was in Bent Knee and I was like no wonder she sounds so great: she is the singer in Bent Knee. I have been a fan for years. They are such a great group so please give them a listen if you have not!
So glad i pre ordered the EP. Feeling so smug right now. This is amazing! What an amazing voice and she has obviously trained herself to be quite instinctive with the pedals, which is a huge achievement. Outstanding! Thank you Emily, Courtney, Russ and Vince.
@@emilyharpist I'm going to have a proper listen to the album later and maybe do some drawing. This is the sort of music that feeds one's creativity, and it takes me a while to absorb complexity. A lot of people have mentioned Bjork and Enya, I can see that, but there is something more and I need to soak it in. Thank you all for this music.
I'm 45 years of age now. When I was a teenager we used to use effect pedals for nearly everything when we made music. Nobody had a computer, no DAW, no plug ins... Recently I came back to this way of producing music ❤ so nice to see that people discover it for new using this "old school" method
My experimental board starts with a EAE Stompmix so I can input guitar, percussion, voice, etc. separately or all together. I always run my Mood into my Blooper because I love shortening the sample on Mood to make cool rhythmic stuff. I agree that there is nothing like the hands-on-knobs experience for creativity. Great sounds and thanks to both of you! 🎶
Courtney is amaaaaaazing!!!! I worked with her back in 2012 with the Ben Levin Group and the whole band crashed at my house and we did 2 shows at a local bowling alley in East Hampton!
This is awesome. Excited to listen to the EP today, but the idea that effects boxes can be used with *anything* that produces sound gets me thinkin'. Courtney's voice gives Bjork vibes, and her ability to manipulate the pedals on-the-fly is next-level skill. Brava!
As a guitar player this is fascinating to watch. I love when music gear and instruments are used for other musical purposes rather than just it's intended purpose of just being a guitar pedal.
Lovely sounds! I've done similar stuff with analog delays and modulation into 80s Ibanez rack delays with hold function for looping! I've read that Brian Eno used those too.
Like some of the other commenters, I'm an old school metalhead and hard rocker, but I really enjoy seeing people doing creative things like this that would normally be totally outside my wheelhouse. I play guitar and I'm totally a pedal-holic. I'm used to using them to get specific tones, but to see a pedal board used as an instrument in it's own right is fascinating.
Bent Knee are one of the most exciting and inventive bands I’ve heard in recent years - Courtney is a fabulous vocalist and musician - great collaboration! Thanks!
I cannot even express how good this video is: from Courtney Swain to Emily (of course), to the Chase Bliss pedals to the wonderful ideas and pedal usage overall to the superb craftsmanship involved in the tracks creation! God, so perfect!
I stopped playing guitar live a few years ago in favour of just running my vocals through my pedals instead so related to this video SO MUCH! also not having to use the computer, huge yes. Love working with my hands when doing music.
That was the most blissful 13 mins I have listened to for a long time. I have always plugged my mic into fx pedals for talking over DJ sets on net radio, for the past 20 years, but this takes things to a whole different level.
This must be a joke that Courtney has 3,000 subs? I love her sound and I expect great things because she does not have to answer to some mixer or studio. Great job.
Truly and literally breathtaking, the pairing of vocals and harp is so naturally beautiful, and the effects just take you to another world. Super excited to see what you two go on to create together.
“Landline” is one of the most pristine, beautiful pieces of music I’ve heard in a very long time. And the tools and methods used to create it are fascinating. Bravo! 🏆

Ahhhh I’m so sorry today was so rough!!! Hope tomorrow is better, and I’m glad Courtney and I (and Vince & Russ!) could help make your day a little brighter. A lot of love and care went into this EP, and I’m so glad to hear it helped, even if just a little!! ❤️❤️❤️
This is a really good idea for post rock or psychedelic music. The singing at the beginning kinda remind me of the vocals from "Hope for Happiness" by Soft Machine. I love the idea of singing with effects pedals and will definitely try it one day.
OMG! That is mind blowing. You and Courtney make an awesome creative duo. So cool to find someone with that level of talent and technical skills. She's just seems so radiant (and has amazing eyes) with a beautiful soul. Watching this video makes me want to look for similar-minded musicians/songwriters to work with in my area.
I saw her do this live with Bent Knee in the back of a comic shop in 2018 and it's still the best show I've ever seen, I'm so stoked you two worked together!
Vocals through Hedra are amazing and with Habit truly amazing. I hear creative talent like this and it inspires me to also create. I love how pedals prove we can create music unconventionally. You two are so talented! Thanks for sharing. I can’t wait to hear the EP!
Omg, how have I never heard of Courtney Swain before!? I wish I could take this video and nail it on my studio wall with the title: "What Would Courtney Do?"
Pedals or vocal synthesizers, these are just pluses for the vocal cords. This is the future for singers. Their hands are free, they can more easily handle these instruments.
This is great. I've been using the line six helix to use effects on my voice and guitar in my band Glasswalker and I've barely scratched the surface compared to this. Inspiring me to go play around with some sounds for sure.
Thank you for having me, Emily & Russ! I'm so inspired by you both. Thank you for the time and energy you pour into your work

HAHAH I LOVE THAT!!! I want a sign like that in my studio, honestly 😂❤
I love how you come up with such unique stuff! Thanks Emily for inspiring me 😊

This was amazing the collab album is amazing. And the medium is genius..I am all about this!!! Great job everyone
