I am a Japanese who uses Q7. It has been a long time since I purchased it. But I can't let go of it because of my love for it. I love the pop of color that the Q7 projects, even though the resolution may not be enough for today's high resolution era. I am proud and happy that so many people around the world are using our Japanese cameras. Thank you very much!
@@GameKeyModSquad-hr4ln The lenses I have are 01/02/03/06/08. Each has its own characteristics, so I can't narrow it down to just one, but I like that they are small and light enough that I can carry them all around with me.
I've had the original Q and the Q10. Both had the date problem (presumably from a dead battery inside that keeps the date.) The Q10 would also not turn on in some circumstances based on battery charge. There's threads and threads about this, so it does happen to other cameras too. Good overview and review!
I just love how you talk about cameras in general.I love how you discus non tech related aspects, such as the look and feel of it. My first camera in college a thousand years ago was a Pentax film camera and i still have it. Listening to you is like listening to a friend talk about things artistic and inspirational, just for the simple joy of it. I must say that i just got back into photography recently and the physical look of these camera design just blew me away, so sleek and retro. Thank you.
I owned the original Q with the magnesium alloy body and selling it is my 2nd biggest photography regret. I've a lot of love for the Q, it works like any other Pentax DSLR, the lenses are superbly made and the image quality is astounding considering the sensor is smaller than my finger nail! It punches way above it's weight. In my opinion though, the Q isn't supposed to be a serious camera, it's for walking about and having a bit of light-hearted fun with. Anytime I was feeling at a loss and falling out of love with photography, I took my Q out for a walk. It changed my mind, made me smile and had me wanting to go out again. Although the RAW images are best for quality, the JPEG output is fantastic too. I customised the looks and had the dial set up with a soft pastel look, a heavy contrast black and white as well as a more vintage sepia look. I would shoot jpeg only 90% of the time and rarely was I disappointed. Like you, I prefer a viewfinder, however, not having one isn't a deal breaker, only a few of my cameras have one. When using screen only, I treat it like I'm taking an image on my phone, it doesn't take long to get used to. All in all, I think the Q is magnificent, ahead of it's time in some ways. Pentax/Ricoh have made many quirky and interesting cameras over the year's, I wish they'd make more! 🙂
I definitely agree that it is an insanely good camera. I found a loop I can attach to give me a pseudo EVF and while it’s meant as a play camera I get a lot more joy out of it treating it with a bit more of a slow tool. It’s quite amazing how well the sensor does. A definite feat of engineering.
It's been 2 weeks of watching your YT videos and I'm loving to learn about your old-school camera reviews. Your reviews give me very practical yet very challenging skills to learn in photography. Please continue reviewing the old machines. Thank you very much. I wish to buy one of your favorite cameras as my souvenir, ❤❤❤
I have a Q7 and I live it. I have 4 batteries, the 01 and 02 lens. Love the camera for its portability. I have an old viewfinder from a rangefinder which can help framing a shot. I don’t have the menu issue. When I power up the camera it’s ready to shoot. Hard to be too critical of such a small versatile camera.
I have the Q-S1. It is a giant slayer. I have consistently had good results with this camera. I always get the view screen when I turn it on. All in all this has been a great camera for me.
Just repurchased the original Pentax Q black with 01 and 02 lenses for a song. Much of the Q’s charm for me is its size, build quality, the Pentax menu systems and DNG raw files. Cool channel, thanks.
Through the 80s and 90s I used an Olympus OM1n, which seemed pretty small at the time. Then pretty much stopped taking photos, only borrowing a compact digital from one of my daughters when the need arose. Then six years ago I bought a used (pink) Q10 with the 02 kit lens, and started to enjoy taking photos again. This was soon followed by the 06 telephoto zoom, the 05 toy lens, a white original Q with 01 prime, 02 and 06 lenses, finally a black Q10 with 02 and 03 fisheye lens. Along with a handful of spare batteries, I'm less than £500 out of pocket. I might pick up a Q7, just in case one of the bodies fails on me. The two Q10s along with 02 kit zoom lenses are on permanent loan to my two daughters. We are all having a lot of fun.
You probably already know this, but if you do get a Q7, keep in mind that the Q & Q10 have a 1/2.3” sensor while the Q7 has a 1/1.7” sensor so your crop factors will be different. Love love love my Q7 and want to get a Q for the magnesium body. Like Pokémon, gotta catch ‘em all.
@@null0byte thanks I was aware that the Q7 and QS-1 have the slightly larger sensor. I did buy a Q7, I haven't used it a great deal yet, something about the Q which just feels better in the hand. I just need to take the Q7 away with me on holiday, and get used to using it.
Date problem is the internal cmos battery has gone bad, a few people have threads on the pentax forums repairing it, but it seems quite difficult. It requires full disassembly and the battery is spot welded in place on the daughter board with usb, so it would likely require some soldering to replace
The photos from that shield lens are delightful. I’m tempted to get this camera to use it with that lens full time when I’m in the mood of something more atmospheric.
I had the Q-S1 about 2 years ago. But I only had one lens and did not want to invest more into the system. But I had fun with it while it was mine. great video a always I am very excited for the next one. I kind of wanna blame you that my camera collection grew pretty fast over the last few months ;-)
Seems like we think alike. I have been using the Q10 and QS1 as well as the S5 pro for the past few years and boy do I love the filmic look of the images that come from both systems.
I hate that every video you upload I want that camera! Great job! I've always been so curious about these Pentax Q's. I've alway been a fan of Pentax and Ricoh's and now I've got a new obsession to search for this camera lol! Regardless of the shortcomings of this camera I do find the size very very appealing and it still seems very very fun! CAN'T WAIT for the Camedia review! I LOVE LOVE LOVE those cameras!
I have a Q7 that I got when it first came out. Have 4 of the factory lenses and adapters for many older lens. I can use all my old Contax/Yashica 35mm lenses, my Canon EF/EF-S lenses plus my collection of very old Pentax 42m screw mount lens from about 10 manufacturers. The bonus is I also got an adapter and a CCTV lens for it plus extension tubes for macro. The fun was with an adapter and a large Yashica bayonet zoom I had a powerful large lens with a low 4f stop because of the 4.7 factor of magnification. Its awesome for having a compact system that so flexible. When I don't want just a phone pic or one from my larger Canon DSLR I grab the Q7. Its gone on many vacations with us.
3:00 I shot flat video for the first time ever on my Q7 today. In post production I was pleasantly surprised how nicely and naturally I could bring up the pinks of the cherry blossoms. I love the way you keep the camera strap nice and tidy with rubber band and will definitely copy that ☺️
Hi! Love these reviews :) You've really sent me on a journey into the yesteryears of digital cameras... a vast rabbit hole of rediscovery and goodness. Would love to see more more more photo samples from each camera. Please please please?!
On my Pentax Q, the date/time prompt appears only when I replace the battery. One thing I love is the black & white photos made with this camera, especially using the built-in "Bold Monochrome" filter. I chose not to buy the toy lenses - instead I purchased the lenses made for the Pentax Auto-110 film camera, and then I got an Auto 110-to-Pentax Q adapter. It's my favourite camera for street shooting. A friend passed me his Ricoh Caplio GX100, which handles like the GR series but has a zoom lens instead of a prime, and tried to convince me it was a better choice for street photography. It certainly handles well but the results were overall disappointing, especially after sunset. So for me the Pentax Q still wins when I'm out and about and want to start snapping discreetly. Great video, and looking forward to the next one! :-)
I love hearing your experience with it. So nice to get other peoples perspectives. I've seen great shots with the Q and those 110 lenses; such a fun combo.
I agree, the Qs (esp Q7 S1) do better than the gx100.. although I like the vf1 and its snap focus. Wish pentax would add snap in firmware. I use the Q with telephoto for extra reach but the Q7/S1s for the wide angle and 01 prime.
That’s a fair review, mine never had the date time problem… that would have been very annoying. At the end of the day you have to use what works for you 👍 Great video 👏
you know what that olympus in your hand at the end of this video surprised me. it was my first camera EVER gievn by my uncle !! I've a lot of memmory with it, kind of sad when i was a kid and didn't know how to use it to its full potential all i did are just point and shoot without knowing what i was shooting 5555 what a young dump man i was. But after all, it was my first step to my passion in photography through out more than 11 years now !!
Nice review, the EVF thing is a let down but.....try the "clearviewer" you can then bring to the eye and shield the sun with the top of your hand. Works really well and I use one on my GRIII, Olly TG6 and Canon M100, oh and my Pentax K-01. Now after watching this you have made me go find my QS-1 which is laying in a box some place for a few years now.
Omgoodness thank you for sharing! I’m going to order that clearviewer as that sounds like the exact thing I need! Super happy to hear you pulled out your QS-1. The QS-2 is one of my favorite cameras!
The clock setup screen can go away of you fire off the flash a few times as this recharges the capacitor. This helps with my Pentax mx1. Hope that stops it from being too annoying
Pentax in recent decades have always wanted to be 'different' When I first started watching the video I remembered the Pentax Auto 110 SLR camera.... yes and single lens reflex camera that used 110 cartridge film, the stuff originally used on Kodak Instamatic point and shoot cameras!
great review. I have really LOVED the color in these photos. will you be binging this one in April? I only always shoot RAW anyway so I don't even know what the jpg on my Nikon is ;-)
I own 2 and never set or cared about time date on any of my cameras, same as my film cameras no date or time. Video is fine from a tripod, not meant for hand holding video. Watch (blunty) review of the Q. He's Australian and loves the Q. Thanks for these interesting flashes from the past. I actually bought a new Kodak they use AA rechargeable and CCD sensors. Mines got that funky filmic look right out of the box. They also have a Pro model available. I also really love my Pentax Ks2 Dslr water resistant with a genuine Pentaprism viewfinder.
Oh my goodness we are birds of a feather! The early Olympus Kodak ccd DSLRs and the KS2 are my very favorites! Reviews will come as soon as I draw them as my EDC from my camera bag.
i just got a q7 and i love it, it’s such a fun and inspiring system. the small size and long reach makes it wonderful for street photography. image quality is very good, would have not thought such a small sensor could do that. glass is exceptional, especially the 06 which will even create wonderful bokeh. also love the 07 for its tinyness and artsy lomo images. ofc an evf would have been nice but tbh it would also mess up the quteness of the body and the display works totally fine for me. i feel sad the system died and would totally appreach a new released q plus some more lenses (like a hq wide prime)
I remember first seeing the Pentax Q in Japan in 2012. My friend and I wanted to buy the same camera and share lenses. But ultimately he got a rugged pentax. And he bought me a toy camera called the Q5 from the Sky Tree. Fast forward to 2020, I was so bored during COVID-19 I saw someone selling on Yahoo Auctions Japan so I grabbed one for myself. It takes sharp images for sure, though the LCD always seems to lie. And I agree, if it had a EVF adapter or even just came out with one at the final release for the Q-S1, I think this would of a been a golden classic. But honestly I think it probably couldn't fit another sensor inside that tiny body of it. The shutter is inside the lens and not the body. So the EVF may have needed to be on the lens itself. Which would make the entire system even more expensive. Would recommend the camera to people that can get it for cheap. It is still better than iPhones.
Great Review, and I agree with each of the pros and cons you mentioned about this camera. I myself, carry 3 fujifilm np-50 batteries when I'm going out with the camera. It's not like a huge deal, because obviously I didn't had to drain all 3 of my batteries, its just for safety (if you can say so).
Pentax made an EVF to mount on the hot shoe specifically for the 01 prime. It’s super hard to find and ridiculously expensive when they come up for sale.
It's an optical viewfinder made to match the prime lens on the original Q body. Works on the Q10 too, but underestimates the field of view when used on the Q7 and Q-S1. They're almost as hard to find as unicorns and cost well in excess of $200 when you do come across one.
The settings reset drives me crazy. I can live without an evf (possibly because I don’t live somewhere where it’s sunny all the time - though one is preferable). I had thought about letting mine go but because it’s the original metal body I think I’ll keep it and try and get the telephoto zoom for it
Purchase a loop magnifier. Attach it to the LCD and you will have the biggest, most wonderful viewfinder for eye level composing! Like looking through the viewfinder of a film era medium format camera. Hope you haven’t sold your Q7 and missed out on a very pleasurable photography experience.
I have the original Q. Is it odd, I don’t particularly enjoy the digital look of it on my phone or IPad? I’ve made small 4x6 prints, and they actually have a nostalgic 35mm film look which I love. Speaking of silly telephoto, I adapted my Nikon Tamron 150-600 G2, to it lol. The amount of reach it had, was ridiculous. I do agree, the lack of EVF is my biggest bummer with it, and a lot of purple fringing that occurs with adapted lenses. I’ve considered trying a Nikon 1 V2 along side with it. I love adapting my old C and D Mount 8/16mm Bolex lenses to it. If Pentax/Ricoh, could release an updated version with an EVF and maybe a M43 sensor, I’d buy it in a heartbeat.
Couldn't agree more! It's like 99% a perfect camera, but that 1% keeps me from using it. I don't hold my breath that Pentax will come out with an updated version (though that would be amazing!) but I do hope Olympus will pick up the slack and come out with an updated Pen camera that is supremely compact and can offer this same fun factor with updated specs.
@@OneMonthTwoCameras Agreed, you've encapsulated my thoughts perfectly on it. It has so much going for it. I'm a huge Pentax fan Great channel BTW! I'm currently watching your Fuji Finepix Pro S5 video, I have the S2. It's one of my favorite classic DSLRs. Best $40 I've ever spent. It punches it own weight next to my Pentax KP or Nikon Z7 if I expose my shot just right! You've gotten a new subscriber! I've been shooting alot on the Minotla 7D Dynax lately too.
@@fosterb300 Oh amazing! I love my Fuji S2 as well. Kept it and sold the S5. And my Minolta 5D is a gem. So happy to have met another fan of these awesome old cameras!
Sorry the Q-7 didn't work out for you. EVF is the deal-breaker for a lot of people, and it works both ways, I can't stand to use one that I have to put my eye up to. The 08 ultra-wide zoom is fantastic-a great lens that offers a unique perspective. You did mention adapting K mount lenses, it also works great with c-mount lenses, for example you can get a 75mm f1.3 lens (340mm FOV equivalent) that opens up a world of available light shooting. You can even adapt D-mount lenses from 8mm Bolex movie cameras!
i thing you are overestimating the evf thingy. if you just think about the billions of people happily snapping with their smartphones, it seems it’s actually must not be such a biggie ;)
I have the original Q, in all white. It's the cutest thing ever, and to be honest that's why I bought it. However, it's a shelf queen. It's just that little below the threshold of comfortable usability. Anyhow, just saw a good deal on a Panasonic GM-1 and ordered it. It's actually a bit smaller than the Q. I'm primarily a MFT user, so have lots of compatible lenses around. The plan is to use it with the 12-32 f3.5-f5.6 kit lens that came with it originally. I'm hoping it'll make for a good backpack camera for those "f8 and be there" opportunities.
Great video. I have a Q10. I have to reset the date and time every time I change the battery. That must drive you crazy every time you power up. I do enjoy the Bold Monochrome setting. In the Q10 that exists only with jpeg. I have heard it exists in RAW format for the Q7 and the QS1.
First of all, LOVE this channel and what you are doing! I've had my original Pentax Q for many years now and I LOVE (the idea of) it. Every time I see the output of it I grin...there is something about that Pentax Q sensor that is special and the noise is very pleasing. But I almost never take this camera with me. I have a few lenses and most of the time I try to shoot with the 01 prime as it makes it as small as possible...but it's still not THAT small...and I'd rather shoot 28 or 35, so that means I have to use the zoom lens...and the camera gets bigger...and then I carry a little bag with all the lenses and it's just frustrating and I think I should have just brought the Leica M240 or the Samsung NX3000 instead. But the Q is laid out SO nicely and I SHOULD want to shoot it more. But I don't. :P hahah. And THANK YOU for hipping me to DXO Photolab! I just recently bought a Canon S90 in mint condition for $60 (it might be my favorite of these older point and shoots) and DeepPRIME breathes new life into this camera like CRAZY! I can shoot ISO 3200 easily and have useable color shots and the corrections built into DXO Photolab for the S90 are just stellar! So, THANK YOU and hopefully you'll do a review of one of the S90-110's in the future!
I bought both the Pentax Q and K-01 when they came out more or less around the same time. I believe they remain Pentax only mirrorless cameras to date. Anyway, had fun using both of them, with a Sigma 18-250 zoom mounted on the K-01 as my main camera, and the Q as a street camera. Both were fun to use but unfortunately, the autofocus issues on both of them and the less than stellar screen which tended to wash out under bright sunlight, led me to retire them after some time. Still have them, and I pull them out once in a while when I want to shoot some quirky unique cameras :)
I sadly am packaging up my Q having decided to sell it after 7 months of struggling to understand it (sold this weekend). I must have watched Matias Burling’s video on it about 20 times before buying my own and I was enamoured by the idea of it. But other than the crop factor e.g. making a standard lens from another brand into a telephoto lens. The image quality was a bit meh (I don't know how to edit photos... think of that what you will lol) and there was no real work around e.g. an external VF. I'm not totally done with the idea of the Q and have kept my 01 lens, Nikon adapter and 4 batteries. However, I feel MFT offers so much more and isn't vastly larger so I am concentrating more on that. I feel that if you ignore the ultra-wide lens as it is so expensive most of what it offers can be done with a premium compact camera. (I have a canon s120 too). I also am worried about the faults these cameras develop; mine had darker corners on the screen, the telephoto lens was known to fail and then there is the issue you speak of. I can imagine at its time it was something special considering the iPhone 4s came out that year and DSLRs were still the best way of getting a good image. Maybe it's a case of being the right camera at the wrong time. I may regret selling it.
That is reassuring for me to hear as well. I really tried to come around but sometimes it's just as you say, wrong time/right camera or right time/wrong camera.
One of the few times I see a camera reviewer with actual photographer experience doing the review :D I'm considering getting one of those for adapting a tiny cctv fisheye only, I wonder if you can just open it and switch the internal clock battery, on olympus it's a capacitor instead of changeable battery
It doesn't effect all the cameras but at some point the internal battery goes and then you have to open up the camera to repair it and resodder which I'm not up for :P
Another camera I regret selling, I got it for cheap with all the lenses, and sold it for twice the price with all the lenses. Should have kept it though, it was a really fun camera to use.
I you liked the size, but must have an EVF, try a Lumix GM5. About same size, ICL, EVF and better video. Full manual control, etc. The 12-32mm kit lens has manual focus with a slider on the LCD, which is a pain, so get a MFT lens with focus ring 12-60 mm zoom or Lumix 20mm 1.8. You will then have the ultimate micro kit!
The GM5 is great! I actually had it and sold it but sort of wish I hadn't. That 20mm 1.8 is one of my favorite lenses of all time and the 12-32 and 35-100 are so small and shockingly good performers. I might have to pick one up again now :)
There's a faulty battery inside it that is supposed to keep the date up to date. Not sure how easy that would be to correct. On a pc you can sometimes open it up and replace that battery.
This I such an interesting camera. I wish I could take one apart and see what the problem is. Weather it is a simple rechargeable battery to replace, or some kind of capacitor which I doubt, I’m sure it CAN be replaced. I have not found any proof of a successful repair online though. If I save enough money I’ll be buying one of these to figure it out and of course I’d share my results.
Love your reviews, the Pentax Q7 looks a great fun camera but like you, I really need an EVF or optical viewfinder. You mentioned you have a Pentax K7, well I hope you do a review soon because it gets a bad press from Pentaxians because of it's poor low light performance. I have a K3 and a K7 and found the K7 in good light is a very good camera :)
The cmos battery is dead, that's the reason for the date issue. You could open it up and replace it but it would require soldering. Funnily enough the Sega Dreamcast had the same issue. hehe.
Hey, excellent review. I didn't even know that pentax released the q7 (I've been shooting the k200, k5 and k1 for years). Have you ever used the fuji x100v? Would love to hear your thoughts on that compared to the ricoh gr3
I have had the X100T and the GR3. Nothing beats the GR3 if portability is your priority but both are absolutely excellent cameras. Do you tend to shoot raw or jpeg?
I bought one of this series, looking for the smallest but capable camera and ended up sending it back as I just couldn’t see the back screen to compose properly. I have a GR3x now, and that can be hard to use the back screen on, but nothing like the Q. Shame, as it had so much promise.
Would this be a good little camera for taking "retro digital" photos in small indoor spaces? Basically photos that are imperfect, maybe slightly bloomy, a little soft, or slightly muted but at the same time still be pleasing to the eye and not look like a $80 point and shoot. I understand post processing in a program like photoshop or lightroom plays a big factor for the end result but was wondering if this camera produces a certain "look" that can be appreciated.
I think the SOOC raw images from this camera are pretty spectacular so yeah, go for it. That said they do have a bit more of a cleaner more modern look unlike Canon S95 or S100 or G7ii, etc. Those have a bit of softer lens and more noise. So you could research those as well and compare on Flickr to see which vibes with your aesthetic more.
@OneMonthTwoCameras Thanks! I basically have the option right now to buy either a Pentax Q7 with 3 lens (01, 02 and 06) for under $300 or a Canon T5i Rebel with a single lens (the standard one) for around the same price locally. They seem like they're two completely different cameras with different goals in mind though so asking what's the better camera might be a dumb question in this instance lol. I will look into the other cameras you mentioned, the Canon G7x ii seems pretty interesting.
I agree with your review, it's a Qute little camera system, but like you I find the lack of a viewfinder is problematic. This problem is all the worse because I need to use reading glasses to use the rear screen, and take them off when looking at the scene I'm photographing. Same problem with the Pentax K-01, their MX-1, the Ricoh GR series, and every mobile phone. So I no longer the Q7 now and am selling it. I have replaced it with the Panasonic Lumix LX100ii. It has a micro 4/3 sensor, traditional manual controls, i.e. the shutter speed dial and the exposure compensation dial on top, the focus ring on the lens, The viewfinder is an EVF, for me it's perfect. Not an interchangeable lens camera, but the 'Leica' badged zoom is an F1.7 - 16 lens with a 24-75mm 35mm equivalent focal length. This makes it a great camera to carry around when I'm not in the mood to lug the Pentax K-1 around - and that's most of the time. It doesn't have a built in flash but comes with a miniscule hot-shoe one which gets lost in my pocket if I take it with me. The camera will not fit into my shirt pocket, but it does fit easily into my Carhartt jacket pocket even in its neoprene case. Sadly the LX100 ii is no longer in production, and I was lucky to find a new one before they disappeared from camera stores, and Panasonic didn't replace it with an upgrade, they just let it die. Perhaps this is why used prices are higher now than the price when it was new . The good news is that Leica, who collaborated with Panasonic for this camera, had their version of it - the D-Lux 7, and as of July this year, offer the upgraded D-Lux 8. It's fundamentally the same camera but with better viewfinder and rear screen, and an improved menu system. The Leica is more minimalist with fewer back buttons to confuse, and there's a lot to be said for that. If you are interested in reviewing a small camera which offers the conventional camera controls for photographic creativity, then this Leica D-Lux 7 or 8, or indeed the Panasonic LX100 ii would be a good choice. Better still, a compare and contrast review with the LX100 ii and the D-Lux 8 would be wonderful. It might even persuade me to buy this Leica!
Every time I took my Q out of the bag the battery was near dead. I think it got 90 photos per charge. It was not good in low light. About ISO 800 was my limit.
Awesome review, I had been looking to pick up an original Q since I saw Matthias Burlings video on it a while ago, I had no clue that this system had issues with the date and setting reset. Something like that really seems to throw me off of the system that i thought would be a near perfect camera in a tiny package. I wonder if this is fixable by replacing the circuit board battery? I know i did this to a powershot i had that worked, but would do a similar thing, and i transplanted the circuit board battery from another one thats screen was completely fried and the camera useless. I guess fixing that would take a lot of faith in your own skills though, but I'm sure a camera repair store might be able to fix it. Excited to see the review and samples on the Camedia! On a side note, I finally ended up getting the xz-1 for a very good price a few days ago, and my results have been relatively hit or miss compared to my Camedia cameras. It obviously can take some great images, but lots of mine i took out in the cold had general funkiness and weird distortion (perhaps it doesn't like -10°C weather) but the ones i took indoors and in normal weather looked great. I think it is way too thin of a camera for my hands though, so i think after a few weeks of testing and use it's going to my girlfriend. I greatly prefer the c7000 i have just because of it's something like 200mm reach, slightly smaller footprint, a significantly better grip, and images that are incredibly similar to the original e1. I am excited for the review though cause i love buying Camedias, perhaps in 2 weeks I'll also have one on my shelf!!
That's interesting about the circuit board. I'd only heard that certain cameras that don't have separate batteries internally to run the clock would do this but it drives me absolutely batty. That is awesome you got the XZ-1! But so strange about the funkiness you're experiencing. Granted I'm in California so don't have any real conditions to subject it to but I hadn't read about that issue in my research. That said, the Camedia line is just too fun. I'd take it as my first choice any day of the week.
If you replace the battery it has to be same amperage and voltage, or else you gonna run too much power into the board and as an effect, fry the components. Just be aware of that.
not all qs have this extreme problem with the date reset. most of the time it only happens when you take out the battery for too long. i tested 5 qs so far and none was acting like this.
Completely agree. This is me being lazy; if you look back at previous videos I do try and mic but the unfortunate part of Olympus cameras for video is the clip splitting that makes synching in post annoying. But editing this reminded me the extra bit of effort is worth it.
@@OneMonthTwoCameras a lot of cameras do that, even if you're talking about a 100 thousand cinema camera (looking at RED) and the funny thing is not a limitation in the camera but a limitation in the format of the file system that the camera storage uses Really weird stuff
after putting this lens (07) on the pentax camera, the camera display shows the value of F 9 or only F--, do you need to manually enter the focal length of the lens?
@@OneMonthTwoCameras I bought this lens and something is probably wrong. after turning on the camera, the camera asks me about the focal length and then it shows on the screen F -- without any number, that's why I ask other users of this lenz if they have the same
I really want one of these but its so expensive in where i live. Body alone cost 500 bucks🗿. Pricing in my country is insane.Anyway, i love your vids, u deserve alot more views and subscribers.
I also used to think that the Toy Lenses had no character - that was until i boosted the contrast right up in post... then the "Toy" effect became obvious.
Wish i could get reloadable 110 cartrages for mt pentax auto 110. I mean its just 16mm film. i imagine i could just get a bulk roll with sprocket holes and have it be fine. Lomographys stuff is kinda pricy >.>
when you put new batteries in the camera you have to press "settings complete". after turning on the camera, you will not get this annoying message again until you put new batteries in again
Just purchased q10. I never carry my DSLR... and I can see carrying this around more than the big cameras And the subjects are not spooked by the big lens and big cam
Q7 came too late, this should have been the first Q line camera. With the larger 1/1.7" BSI CMOS it finally had some sense. Those previous experiments with smaller CCD had no future. Another problem was pricing. These kits here were basically on same level as K50 DSLR kit. Also the lens portfolio with those "toy" lenses undermined the credibility of this system. And at the end it is better to just have Olympus XZ-2 which has same sensor, but very fast and optically excellent 28-112mm/1.8-2.5 lens. Or even better beast the mighty Olympus Stylus 1/1s that has again this sensor, much better AF, EVF viewfinder and brutal range 28-300/2.8 packed in small portable body.
Another for your vollection is the Samsung NX mini .... a rather ... Take a look at Mattias Burlings video on it. ruclips.net/video/_gRQRuBqTB8/видео.html
Thank you very much!
the Japanese are the true masters of cameras. Japan has given us some incredible products and I'm so grateful for that👃

Which lens do you like to use in Q7 ?
@@GameKeyModSquad-hr4ln The lenses I have are 01/02/03/06/08. Each has its own characteristics, so I can't narrow it down to just one, but I like that they are small and light enough that I can carry them all around with me.
@@kazumd1 Thank you. I just got q10
With 01 and 02. Perhaps I'll add 06 in the future.
I've had the original Q and the Q10. Both had the date problem (presumably from a dead battery inside that keeps the date.) The Q10 would also not turn on in some circumstances based on battery charge. There's threads and threads about this, so it does happen to other cameras too. Good overview and review!
Good to hear I'm not the only one!
Will your saved settings disappear once the camera with a dead battery inside turns on and off? Like when you program the custom dials in the front?
You are so so kind. Thank you so much!!
That is fantastic. It looks so cute!
Just repurchased the original Pentax Q black with 01 and 02 lenses for a song. Much of the Q’s charm for me is its size, build quality, the Pentax menu systems and DNG raw files. Cool channel, thanks.
It's seriously cute. I would love to get an original Q to try out again sometime. Nice job on your pick up!
Starting at 16:26 the audio and video is so superior to the bulk of this review, do it this way in the future, looks pro.
It's a feature of all cameras once past about 4/5 years, really not worth the effort of disassembly for a date reset that's for sure😊
One of my big regrets is not picking up one of the Q series so far. I've admired them for years but never pulled the trigger. Got me looking again :)
I love it! I am a long time Pentaxian. I am new to your channel and I enjoy it very much.
Thanks so much for being here!
Hahaha! My most sincere apologies :)
I resently got the Q7 no date problem and there is a viewfinder for this camera.
Love mine.
What is the viewfinder?
Seems like we think alike. I have been using the Q10 and QS1 as well as the S5 pro for the past few years and boy do I love the filmic look of the images that come from both systems.
That is awesome! Real treasures to be sure.
I feel like it's so subjective and everyone should try it if they can. It's a delight in many ways; just not the camera for me.
Awesome review! I got the Q-S1. Amazing little monster!
Very nice!
I love the way you keep the camera strap nice and tidy with rubber band and will definitely copy that ☺️
Very cool!! I will have to take a look at that. Thanks for sharing!
Hi! Love these reviews :) You've really sent me on a journey into the yesteryears of digital cameras... a vast rabbit hole of rediscovery and goodness.
Would love to see more more more photo samples from each camera. Please please please?!
Yes trying to add more with each video as it's been a common request :)
At the end of the day you have to use what works for you 👍
Great video 👏
you know what
that olympus in your hand at the end of this video surprised me.
it was my first camera EVER gievn by my uncle !!
I've a lot of memmory with it, kind of sad when i was a kid and didn't know how to use it to its full potential
all i did are just point and shoot without knowing what i was shooting 5555
what a young dump man i was.
But after all, it was my first step to my passion in photography through out more than 11 years now !!
That's amazing! It's a shockingly good camera and I am really enjoying shooting with it. Can't wait to review it in a couple weeks!
Amazing thank you!
@@OneMonthTwoCameras love your videos mate
@@davedavidson so very appreciated! Thank you.
Pentax in recent decades have always wanted to be 'different' When I first started watching the video I remembered the Pentax Auto 110 SLR camera.... yes and single lens reflex camera that used 110 cartridge film, the stuff originally used on Kodak Instamatic point and shoot cameras!
Yes I love the 110 cameras! I actually have the digital equivalent - the Optio I-10 - on its way to me from Japan :)
great review. I have really LOVED the color in these photos. will you be binging this one in April? I only always shoot RAW anyway so I don't even know what the jpg on my Nikon is ;-)
I guess you are not bringing it!! ;-) I just finished listening.
:P
Which Kodak is that you mentioned?
i just got a q7 and i love it, it’s such a fun and inspiring system. the small size and long reach makes it wonderful for street photography. image quality is very good, would have not thought such a small sensor could do that. glass is exceptional, especially the 06 which will even create wonderful bokeh. also love the 07 for its tinyness and artsy lomo images. ofc an evf would have been nice but tbh it would also mess up the quteness of the body and the display works totally fine for me. i feel sad the system died and would totally appreach a new released q plus some more lenses (like a hq wide prime)
Loving your videos!
Thank you Harrison!
Love your style of review BTW!
Thank you! I appreciate that.
I may have to add this camera to the collection… The form factor looks really cool!
It's such a design gem.
Thank you! Yeah three batteries sounds right. They're small so not a hassle to cary as well.
You just earned a new sub! Love your content!
Awww thanks for subbing!!!
Pentax made an EVF to mount on the hot shoe specifically for the 01 prime. It’s super hard to find and ridiculously expensive when they come up for sale.
I don't believe that's right, the pentax Q has no plug by the hotshoe to connect a evf
I had thought about letting mine go but because it’s the original metal body I think I’ll keep it and try and get the telephoto zoom for it
That lens is worth keeping the body for alone. Such a fun combo.
That's a great point! I actually have that for my Sigma DP2Q and love that experience.
How did you attach the loop magnifier?

Agreed, you've encapsulated my thoughts perfectly on it. It has so much going for it. I'm a huge Pentax fan
Great channel BTW!
Great point! I love all the crazy lens combos and it’s honestly the cutest thing imaginable. Just that EVF or lack thereof….
i thing you are overestimating the evf thingy. if you just think about the billions of people happily snapping with their smartphones, it seems it’s actually must not be such a biggie ;)
loved the photos, love the concept.. think I'd find all the same issues issues with it!
I’m so usurious to try the other Qs now as well
What camera are you recording this video with? Looks amazing
Nice review, checkout Nikon 1 series system. It's an even smaller ILC camera (has a bigger sensor than Pentax Q though).
Oh I totally forgot about the 1 series! I actually had a J5 kit. A great set up. Thank you for the reminder!
Someone is selling one in my area for 25usd. I caught the post 20 minutes in, hope they respond. Thanks for the demo!
You are so welcome and I'm so happy to hear it helped you out! Thanks so much for watching and keep an eye our for a S95 review ;)
Though it's an investment, the 08 lens (god tier) would have fixed your need for the 28mm.
@@mainmast7806 yeah, I kick myself for not buying that lens when it was a little cheaper.
I'd also add I'm glad I'm not the only one who has mixed opinions of the Q as it makes packaging it up a bit less emotional.
I have the Q7 for many years and I don't have to set the date everytime I turn the camera on. It's strange.
It doesn't effect all the cameras but at some point the internal battery goes and then you have to open up the camera to repair it and resodder which I'm not up for :P
Yep, you nailed it good. I had the same journey with the Q, so great yet so frustrating it was maddening and it went ;-( Thanks for another fun time.
My pleasure! Thanks for sharing.
Another camera I regret selling, I got it for cheap with all the lenses, and sold it for twice the price with all the lenses. Should have kept it though, it was a really fun camera to use.
It's a real cutie.
Did you ever buy into the Nikon 1 system?
I did!! I have a V1 waiting to be reviewed :)
Great review.
Glad you enjoyed it!
The cmos battery is dead, that's the reason for the date issue. You could open it up and replace it but it would require soldering. Funnily enough the Sega Dreamcast had the same issue. hehe.
Yes exactly! Such a bummer.
has the same feel as the nikon1 system i suppose, nice video, thanks
Definitely a lot in common feel wise.
Nice camera
Take a look at the Nikon V1
Hey, excellent review. I didn't even know that pentax released the q7 (I've been shooting the k200, k5 and k1 for years). Have you ever used the fuji x100v? Would love to hear your thoughts on that compared to the ricoh gr3
I have had the X100T and the GR3. Nothing beats the GR3 if portability is your priority but both are absolutely excellent cameras. Do you tend to shoot raw or jpeg?
These shots make Abq look beautiful. lol
I bought one of this series, looking for the smallest but capable camera and ended up sending it back as I just couldn’t see the back screen to compose properly. I have a GR3x now, and that can be hard to use the back screen on, but nothing like the Q. Shame, as it had so much promise.
Great video, subscribed!
Thanks so much for the sub!
@@OneMonthTwoCameras You are welcome, good luck with your channel!
Perhaps this is why used prices are higher now than the price when it was new
.
I agree! Check this out:

Hellooo, what main camera did you shoot this video with? I really like it !
I filmed with the Olympus EM5iii!
Hi you said when you switch the camera off you have to reset the date I have just bought one and mine is ok don’t have to reset the date on it
Every time I took my Q out of the bag the battery was near dead.
Ever thought about giving this system another go? (lost my black Q7 but repurchased in silver OOOF)
I have!!! I want to try picking up an original Q but am drowning in cameras at the moment so need to clear out more first 🤪
next video you should use an camera as a lapel mic, it would be fun and the audio quality should be better
Completely agree. This is me being lazy; if you look back at previous videos I do try and mic but the unfortunate part of Olympus cameras for video is the clip splitting that makes synching in post annoying. But editing this reminded me the extra bit of effort is worth it.
@@OneMonthTwoCameras a lot of cameras do that, even if you're talking about a 100 thousand cinema camera (looking at RED) and the funny thing is not a limitation in the camera but a limitation in the format of the file system that the camera storage uses
Really weird stuff
@@gusatvoschiavon it's the only thing I miss about my Sony A7C :P
How about manual focusing with pentax 110 lenses with adapter? Does it have focus peaking or some other option for easier manual focusing?
after putting this lens (07) on the pentax camera, the camera display shows the value of F 9 or only F--, do you need to manually enter the focal length of the lens?
No the camera should read the native lens automatically. I am not sure why it's showing only F9.
@@OneMonthTwoCameras I bought this lens and something is probably wrong. after turning on the camera, the camera asks me about the focal length and then it shows on the screen F --
without any number, that's why I ask other users of this lenz if they have the same
@@wkunique I'm sorry to hear that. I can't say I have run into that issue for a first party lens.
I really want one of these but its so expensive in where i live. Body alone cost 500 bucks🗿. Pricing in my country is insane.Anyway, i love your vids, u deserve alot more views and subscribers.
Thank you! Sorry to hear it’s so pricey there! Where do you live?

I also used to think that the Toy Lenses had no character - that was until i boosted the contrast right up in post... then the "Toy" effect became obvious.
Re the fisheye lens, use the Q's focus peaking function :)
Wish i could get reloadable 110 cartrages for mt pentax auto 110. I mean its just 16mm film. i imagine i could just get a bulk roll with sprocket holes and have it be fine. Lomographys stuff is kinda pricy >.>
That would indeed be awesome
too bad they don't have a wider/fast prime, something like 28mm equivalent
Could u talk about Pentax DSLR with CCD sensor? Like K200d, is it any good and does it hold in 202x?
Absolutely. I have a K10D and an istDL waiting in the wings but short answer, it definitely holds up :)
when you put new batteries in the camera you have to press "settings complete". after turning on the camera, you will not get this annoying message again until you put new batteries in again
Even when I press settings complete, it comes up again when I turn off the camera. I have heard this isn't uncommon though.
The date thing only happens to me when I take out the battery.
On the Q7/S1 the prime01 is 39mm equivalent. On the Q and Q10 it was 47mm equivalent. Ala GRiiiX ;)
ah yes! totally forgot about that marginal shift in the sensor size between the models. thanks for notating!
Get yourself a Wi-Fi card for the 7 shoot and share on the go it's a bit hungry on the battery tho
Great review! I have the original Q and 01. Fun to use and produces really good images.
Definitely impressed by what these cameras can create!
Just purchased q10.
I never carry my DSLR... and I can see carrying this around more than the big cameras
And the subjects are not spooked by the big lens and big cam
Small cameras are great
I carry my Q with 2 spare batteries, the prime and tele in my pocket. Still prefer my gr iii’s images
Sadly the Pentax Q10 is Available as is it better then Pentax Q7
The internal battery is dead after all these years.
Sigh....
women think there is a perfect camera to fall in love with but there are none. Cameras are like men.
Those colors are sooo Leica … Minus the bs.
