Hi Lisa, I had this deck, purchased in the 90s and it was my main reader for years. Living in Canada, it was hard to get your hands on very many decks at that time. You had to mail order for them usually. I had been reading with the Morgan Greer before that and learned what I knew of Tarot from it's book. I did not know there was a RWS system at that time. Voyager took me on a whole new adventure with Tarot, one where after reading the book, I then did not have to use the book anymore. That was major in my Tarot growth. I found between the keywords and the many elements on each card I was able to read very effectively. I often had the experience of a particular image floating up to the surface from the photo montages that gave so dead on info to the question being ashed. The Child and Sage cards got my thinking about courts as stages of human life and I have thought of them as child, youth, adult and elder ever since. Devil's Play also added a dimension to the Devil card that made it make sense to me and be less fearful of it. I often used to take it out of the deck before that. I used Devils play as an aspect of the Devil card to this day. It was so formative in my development as a Tarot reader and the above are only a couple of examples of why. I encourage you to play with it as it is and try not to convert it to a RWS system and see what happens. Let go, almost in a Star Wars way of rearching out with your feelings to the Force and see what happens. And if you want to study a card, a magnifying glass to look at all of a cards elements is very useful. Then, when you read with it, you may find tiny elements float up and become very present in your conscious and in relation to the question. At least that was my experience.

This was SO delightful to read! Thank you for sharing so much of your experiences with this deck!! I'm very much taking it at face value, so far, in working with it - and really enjoying the experience far more than I suspected I would!!

Art; is the art of Alchemy, the mixing of the fire and the water without losing the properties of each element yet creating a perfect new substance that contains both. The perfect temperance in the process of creation to create an impeccable mixture

You mentioned reading this deck intuitively, that is exactly the intention that James had for the deck. He used to have a podcast a long time ago called "Intuition into Action" and it was wonderful. He is a wonderful person and the deck is so incredible. I used to do a 'story' reading with people, we would 'write' the story together conversing back and forth and this was one of the deck I mainly used for it and the images on the cards would magically follow along with what was written in the story just previously. There are are actually two books that go with the deck as well.

Hi Lisa, this is actually my first time on your channel. I have this deck for almost 10 years but I rarely use them. It was actually a gift from my friend who worked in the printed/publishing company almost 10 years ago. The first time we played with this deck i counted that it only has 77 cards so I thought this deck won't be too useful. I remember the deck but I just rarely use it. I am an illustrator so the first time when I saw the deck, the graphic really spoke to me and I enjoy looking at them. Funny thing is today i was cleaning my home/putting some books away and I found this deck from my drawer. I count the deck again and this time it has 78 cards. I don't know why but I feel like today, after 10 years it is time to make the deck a good use and really learn how to use them/talk to them/let them talk to me. Thank you so much for this video, I am really happy to found your channel today : )

Welcome!!! Glad to have you on board! :) I was recently gifted a bigger guidebook to use with the deck - so if you do decide to go deeper, you might want to look into it too, it's called Voyager Tarot, Way of the Great Oracle :) I've not worked with the bigger book much yet but I'm excited about the possibility!

I, too was tempted to repurchase this deck for nostalgia reasons. It brings back the feeling of moving to California from the East Coast 33 years ago, when I was young, my life was wide open, and I was exploring spiritually. Seeing the images again in your walkthrough brought back the people, places and experiences from that time. It also helped me realize I don't need to rebuy it, so thank you. I hope your time with it is fruitful, and that the memories of your friend and that season of your life are sweet.🙂

Lisa, I bought this when it first came out.. Years later I was working a Tarot convention and introduced him to tge group. At tgat time he was selling his deck in a different format. He had taken all the cards, trimmed and cut each into 4 pieces. You pull 4 out of tge bag and make your own card. It's still to this day fascinating what you can see in these pulls!

This is one of the decks that survived the “great deck purge of 2020” where I re-homed over half of my deck collection. I love the clarity of the messages I get from this deck and how the images that were chosen for each card clearly relay the creator’s meaning for the card. I have had the same issue with decks where I try to take what someone has created and fit it into the RWS meaning. If the deck leans heavily (but not exclusively) on RWS I tend to end up not using that deck because I just pull up the RWS image in my mind and use that meaning ( I’m talking about you Anna K). I try really hard not to do that with this one and just let it be what it is.

This is a wonderful deck! I bought mine in the early 2000s with an old companion book that was published in 2000. James has a newer book that was published in 2013. I read with this once for my cousin, and it read so great and with a lot of yang masculine energy. It's a very direct deck IMHO. Thanks for sharing your video of this deck.

Minor suits look like the 4 functions as jung and myers-briggs. Thinking for crystals, feeling for cups, sensation for worlds and intuition for wands. Intuition has a somewhat different definition for this context though.

This deck was released in the seventies. The first time I saw it I fell in love with it. I spent one day in contemplation with each card before I could do any spreads. I became proficient and read in cafes, at parties and at psychic fairs in the 80's. I seldom use this deck any more but one thing I wish was the word meaning was not printed on the cards because after a while they seem to limit how far the meanings can go.

This deck was based on the thoth deck but was designed to be a deck of it's own. It really is an intuitive deck. I like the vintage copies of this deck as they are bigger and you can see most of the details better than the current version in the market today.
But ever since I saw this deck, I know it's me. It's my soul deck. I love this deck. A very interesting deck yet a deck that i feel is quite underated. It provides a very deep insightful deck giving a lot of aha moments. It's a deck that is good for a deeper conversation. A deck for deeper contemplation and question than a more fortune telling type of question. :)

I may have to get this one day. Have had my eye on it for a while, and my intuition is totally triggered by great keywords rather than me looking at imagery (is that weird?). And do love the intent with which this deck was written. Also I feel although some cards are a little jarring image wise, they do look really good, especially for a collage deck from the 80’s. Also this looks like the kind of deck where in live readings, some of the imagery may trigger reactions from clients which could be fun.

My first reading was with this deck, it was the second deck I ever bought. Since then, the early 90’s, I’ve had several readings with James himself, and attended several of his workshops. (Somewhere I have a document that discusses every little image used and why)
My readings with James were always so energetic and empowering, I have a great fondness for this deck.

I LOVE this deck!!! It's a beautiful combination of psychology and different cultures and symbols. I think definitely getting the big book would be helpful. Tarot Garden shows the first edition with slightly different borders, a tan/beige color.

This was either my second or third deck (I can’t remember if I bought it or Daughters of the Moon first) and in the oldest deck in my current collection. I also haven’t actually read with it in years because my girlfriend of twenty five years ago disliked it, said it was cold and robotic.
One thing I found really interesting about your walkthrough is that I acquired this deck so early in my tarot journey that I didn’t notice that the meanings of the pip cards vary rather a lot from RWS. I’m thinking I’m going to sit and do a comparison between it and the Gill tarot and see how they line up.
I am so glad I’ve started following you. You’ve gotten me to pull so many decks out of limbo and give them another chance, and so far every single one has been so much more accessible this time around.

Hey Lisa, so cool to hear your take on this deck, it's special to me too. Funnily i get a lot less of the glaring contrast in your video than i had in my copy - i went over each card with a transparent brown ink, which worked to solve that for me. But here it looks fine. Definitely a different edition (mine' s the 2nd).I trimmed mine. Going to pull it back out. I've always felt it to be super 'Californian', empowered, individual, hippie-free in the best way!
Btw there's a bigger book besides the little one!

Edit: now i want to do that Thoth-Voyager side by side!!! And i did it straight after, it's on my channel. Fun2do!
Edit2: ALL the children, in 1st and 2nd reading together. Hmm

Hi Lisa✨ so fascinating I too started learning with The Osho Tarot and this one! I probably have a first or second edition which has a very large guide book. It’s a shame that isn’t what comes with the current deck/printing. For me this deck is always deep, often takes a lot of contemplation or journaling and I often only pull it out when I have an interest in diving deep. The imagery although dated always sparks a lot for me over days and the dated woman/man titles I just change in my energy to the feminine and masculine inside of me or aspects of my being or feel them as guides. If I did do readings for others I probably would not use it, only for personal growth and finding the layers of landscape hidden inside of me that are from the future if you know what I mean. It has a shamanic and celestial vibe from the future for me. New to your channel and enjoying your passion shared with all of us🌌💓

It is a bit thothy, not sure how much, but if I remember correctly James said either in the booklet or in some interview I saw, that each of the numbers of the minor arcana are an aspect of that same number Major. So the fours are aspects of the Emperor in the four different suits/realms etc. It does make a lot of sense as a system :)

I love mine but had it trimmed 😂 Let the colors loose ! Especially because those beige borders were just wtfwtt ????!!!! The way I use it is primarily letting the eyes drop to an image. And it's that one that controls the whole reading of the card. Handling the color overload does take some time 🙂

Thank you for taking us on a journey! If you keep them it would make aesthetic sense to chop the borders because the borders date them and don’t even match the colors in the card... which I wonder... if the borders were black it would look so much better. Nonetheless, it does seem like a complex deck to get to know.

    • @Lisa_Papez
      @Lisa_Papez  3 года назад +2

It's surprisingly going pretty easy, getting to know it, so far - I didn't think I liked the borders, but actually they provide this sort of calm containment to the chaos of the imagery so they're kinda growing on me!

Very interesting deck. I do collage art and find intense inspiration in most of the images. A lot of artists create to illicit a reaction or an emotional response and this deck definitely does that. I’d be interested in hearing how your journey into this deck goes. I wonder how it would do with past lives or ancestral readings?

That artwork is about as far from my aesthetic as it's possible to get, LOL. At the time this deck came out, all I had was the Swiss 1JJ I had bought a few years earlier, and I think I would have run screaming if that chaotic collage-style art was all I could find. I'm happy that it makes some people happy, though - it would be a dull world if we were all the same!

This deck came out when I was in college, and it was somehow immensely polarizing within my circle of cute widdle babypagans. It seems incredible to me now that emotions could have run so very high about it, but a lot of people were just very *adamant* in either their love or their hate for this deck, and I (who had no strong feelings about the deck itself one way or the other at the time) found the constant debates over it disruptive and...oh, I don't know. Just plain irritating, really.
So I've been avoiding this one for years, just because it brought back memories of those discussions that I so disliked, but it's been so long ago now that I'm ready to approach it fresh. I really enjoyed this video, and find I'm now really interested in sitting down with these cards and taking a much longer look at their imagery. Thanks!

This was my second deck ever, that was actually gifted to me. I never really used it because it was so busy and seemed all over the place to me. If I am remembering correctly, some of the keywords are Thoth influences but it kind of does its own thing. Did you get the separate book for it? My copy is in storage and I can't remember what is in it. I think it was somewhat substantial though. I think this started my tend of getting Thoth based decks. It was never on purpose but just wound up that way somehow.

@@Lisa_Papez I can see that. If I remember correctly the text is a little dense but that could just be my understanding of it. I feel like that was not a beginner friendly deck and maybe that is what put me off from learning for so long.

It's a beautiful deck, but I'm not sure it's for me. Soul Cards were mentioned and I'm not drawn to those at all, but I think I could maybe use this deck in that kind of way. Just not sure. The deck borders really turn me off though. I think this deck needs black borders. Not sure I'd work with it as Tarot, maybe more or an Oracle using the images and keywords.

This whole deck reminds me of SoulCollage. Many of my SoulCollage cards have the same vibe (visually). I don’t know how or whether I’d be able to read with it as a tarot. I think, given the similarity, I’d be more inclined to put in the effort to create my own collage (tarot) deck rather than expend the energy to learn to read with this one.
That said, if I had the kind of personal connection with it that you describe, it would be worth it.
