And here I am with a cheapo Takara Kabuto, dragged out of a dumpster, with a bunch of spare parts thrown at it. Heavy cheap gaspipe frame with an old spare carbon seatpost and bmx seat collar (for some reason..), origin8 cockpit and crankset, Weinmann rims with novatec hubs and michelin tires... It's a Frankenstein of a bike, but it's mine. I would absolutely have more fun on a proper frameset, but I still enjoy my trash
I think that’s how most fixed gear ppl start off. If you can get past the initial stage of riding a cruddy bike and enjoying it. Then you’re worthy of a new bike to be committed to purchasing.
What is a proper frame? You mean an expensive frame with lots of dubious marketing surrounding it. Enjoy your bike, I live in Berlin your creation would be considered as a masterpiece. ❤️
I've looked into Wabi bikes several times over the last two years and they are permanently sold out of my sizes. You are doing a great job promoting them :)
Zach, I haven’t got the opportunity to ride fixed. however, I got extremely frustrated with my multi speed for multiple reasons. The straw that broke the camel’s back, was the fact that my rear derailleur hanger stripped out and I actually tried zip tying the RD to the hole (which worked) but being the over analytic person I am, which obsesses over the minimalist detail, I obtained an ss freewheel cog and let me tell you something, it changed my entire attitude and love for riding all over again. I don’t think I even have to explain the feeling because I know you understand. I’m still on the fence about going fixed because of safety reasons, rural little town population 30k is the LEAST amount of bicycle infrastructure, but if it wasn’t for you and your channel I would probably not even gave the single speed a minute of my time. Thank you Zach, you don’t know me, but always remember that you have a positive impact of more lives than you will ever know.
I'm literally in the same boat as you, constantly have had problems with geared bikes in the past, snapped a few gear hangers and bent rear derailleurs, had a bbshd ebike conversion kit but that was full of problems so, I got a car, costs way too much to run for the amount I was using it, I stumbled across this channel randomly one night and got obsessed with fixed gear so I sold my car and got a dolan pre cursa, I love it, live in a town in South of Ireland and I'm riding brakeless, the first week was a learning experience in terms of getting used to no freewheel and no brakes, I'm lifting around the place now though not a bother, wouldn't go back to geared bikes at all, my only problem now is flat tyres
I purchased a Black Label and then a few months later a new crank set from State. I had no issues with the quality of any orders I made however I know if there was an issue State would make it right. I stripped an axle, contacted State to get some spec. information, and they told me since I had a warranty they would just send me a new wheel. I told them it was my fault and they didn't have to do that but they sent it anyway.
Im a beginner fixed gear rider and I just built up a $300 bike. Its pretty nice IMO, especially riding around town doing errands. Granted its only on a cheap steel frame, its enough for me. This is coming from someone who rides an enduro mountain bike around town lmao
Been following for nearly ten years. Since the Purple All City. Thanks for the many years of advice. What We are waiting for is the money is no object fixed gear frame video.
I bought a GT Gutterball years ago, around 2012 or so... Best Bang for your Buck! I also got it on sale for $600 out the door! Still ride it. Same Cranks, Same everything... Just had a tune up, Spokes / Rims Trued / tightened, new rear bearings, bottom bracket, Chain, tries and Brake pads. Rides like New!
What a lot of people don't realize is that you first tested and fell in love with Wabi before they became a sponsor. You're not like the usual channel where you rave about the sponsor just because they sponsor you. You genuinely love their bikes.
I just bought my IRO MARK V back after having sold it 5 years ago. Tried a couple other bikes in between, wasn’t the same. Sweet reunion 🥺 Reynolds 631, I didn’t appreciate it enough the first time around.
Thanks man, after my upgraded Cordoba got stolen last month I copped a State 6061 Black Label v2 based on your prior video. As you pointed out some minor quality control issues but nothing major, love the bike.
They did you a service by stealing the Aventon but you didn't take advantage and got a State 🙃 the only bike on this list worth the money is the Dolan, and even that is the definition of entry level. Haven't tried the Wabi but if Zach praises an entry level Dolan like it's the second coming of JC, I look at his praise for Wabi through the same biased lens.
@Bebo what kind of CroMo are you referring to? You're talking subjective experience and my guess is you don't know your alloys very well either. So what is better about the bike? The tubing? You can get any tubing you want in any geo you want on an NJS frame. There are lots of types of CroMo steel out there, and alloy 'number' barely makes a difference in ride quality. Geo, wheels, and tyre size dictate that way more.
@Bebo I'm not saying the Wabi is bad, I'm asking how is it better? NJS frames are custom made, the measurements being spot on makes a difference, more than frame material. And I've just been raving about consumer bikes from Europe, you brought in the NJS comparison. I'm just asking how it is better and you're calling it hate? Chill bro, no hating here, your argument is just on shifty terrain.
@Bebo ok sir, I guess 25 years or riding bikes, and being an engineer amount to nothing against the might of the Wabi and the expertise of the internet comment section, but I'll try to spell it out to you nonetheless: 1. you didn't explain anything, you shared a subjective opinion and backed it up with nothing, there are too many variables to control for and you're just deciding to pin the difference in feel to type of alloy, nice placebo. some bike magazine guys in the 90s did an experiment with a bunch of identical bikes made of different Columbus tubing and they could barely spot any difference between them, and could not tell which is which before the steel types were revealed for each bike. They were all the same size, geo, and kitted out with the same parts (note how size and geometry are different things); 2. again, I'm not hating on the Wabi, it sounds like a great bike and they use some dope alloys to make them, I certainly wouldn't say no to one. on the other hand I'm questioning weather the praise is legit, given how highly the basic Dolan frame is regarded by the person doing the praise (I have an FXE which is Basically a Precursa with mounts); 3. frame material matters (steel, C, Al, Ti), but type of steel much less (see point 1. above). there are many characteristics of the tubes themselves that can matter more than alloy type (butting, profile, thickness, welded or braised, and most of all GEOMETRY) and a whole load of other bike parts that can make a difference to how it feels: stem and saddle length and height, BB height, wheels and tyres, width of the BB shell and crankset QR factor, even the crank length provides a more noticeable difference in 'feel' than the type of steel alloy, and don't even get me started on angles; 4. your 'feel' of the bike is irrelevant, people feel like they're going faster on 23 mm tyres, but they're not, science proved that larger volume tyres have less rolling resistance. however, you do get one bit right - smaller frames are stiffer regardless of what alloy they're made of, so take that as you will regarding your Titanium vs Wabi comparison; 5. spend more time on Sheldon Brown's website, maybe you'll learn a thing or two before arguing with engineers on the internet, and while you're at it, visit Hambini's RUclips channel as well, you'll gain an appreciation for build quality and tolerances and maybe grow to appreciate NJS bikes to their fullest after seeing what the modern bike industry tries to pull off; 6. all I did in my original comment was to highlight all the cool European brands that Zach seems to ignore, you brought in an NJS comparison with loose terms and sprinkled subjectivity on it, complimented me for being a kid (thank you, after an age it's nice to be thought of as young) and then dismissed my opinion because of some wild assumptions on your behalf... 7. 'all NJS bikes are CrMo' - look up how many types of CrMo tubing there are out there, Reynolds 725 which the Wabi Special is made of is also a type of CrMo alloy, so not only are you arguing that a hand built custom made bike from CrMo is worse than a mass produced bike made from CrMo, but you don't even understand what they are made of. I have two bikes made of two different types of CrMo from Columbus (Thron and Cromor) and what makes them feel different is the tube profile and thickness, not the alloy. Feel free to dismiss this comment but If you want more info in my next comment I'm afraid I'll have to charge for the lesson. OK?
Over 100K subscriber Zach, post fixed gear trend. Excellent. Just want to weigh in on the Wabi cycles, as a non affiliated long term owner of of both a Wabi Classic, and Wabi special. These bikes are hands down, second to none when it come to street use steel fixed gear bikes. Never a problem, and zero complaints.A true modern value overload, especially in today's market. Happy trails y'all.
Special rider here. The QC was absolutely perfect, it's lightweight, fits 32c tires, can be spec'ed in multiple bar configurations out of the box, too.
Just need a 'Worst Complete Fixed Gear Bikes for Every Budget' video now so people know which models to avoid although must admit I'm happy with cheapo high tensile steel fixed gear bikes myself and Shimano still do loose ball bearing hubs which are easy to maintain and very reliable. They have larger ball-bearings I believe than typical sealed bearing hubs so if greased and adjusted properly should be excellent hubs over the long term. I bought a cheap fixed gear bike in the UK which is very similar to the Jamis Beatnik using a 1040 steel frame I believe.
Another option would be a "Tracklocross" bike, tire clearance is bigger so you can fit larger wheels therefore more comfort, stability and more riding options as you can do some off roading ✌
The best bikes are built by the rider, full of quality components taken from random bikes that are ready to retire, then combined into a machine brought to life by your own hands and ridden hard just short of your own death. 🤘💀
I had a 6ku and didn’t give me a problem using until about a year and a half later…. I wrote it from 15-20 miles daily … now I made modification… moved up to 50t, omnium cranks + gxp bottom bracket, carbon fiber fork, obviously clipless, breathable seat (crotch cutout), and I’m still happy with my bike 🚲
Ive ridden the Kilo TT for years, mine might be worth $1000 but what you get of the box is still great! I've followed you for years and love your content. You should consider a single speed video (if there are enough differences to warrant one) or commuting bikes. Like a single speed or cyclocross build with a panier rack or something. I have to admit its been a few years since i road religiously it would be cool to see what new commuter options are out there.

I bought my State V2 Black label 59cm frame set , No issues at all after building it .. good purchase ,though . I would recommend to anyone trying to get one. get , the frame set , to have a better chance of getting a good 👍 one. I also told my sales rep From state to please check it out before they chip it out to me ! For defects and they did ..that way we can avoid the hassle of returns always ask questions and know your options . exchanges, returns ..as a customer. ..good frame set 👍
I did this, for the most part, with new frame and new components. Learned a lot on the journey, including that a build with new components took more time and $$$ than expected. It started when I found a new Bianchi Super Pista frame on ebay, in my size. I wanted the drivetrain to be SRAM Omnium, but those were discontinued at the time, so no new available. Opted for Dura Ace and waited over time to find better/best pricing. New Dura Ace was and keeps getting more expensive. For the wheelset, I decided on H+PLUS SONS ARCHETYPE with Suzue ProMax hubs, Thompsen stem and seatpost and Selle Italia saddle. I collected components for 8 mos and spent $2k for the complete build. I could not be more happy with the bike; built custom as I wanted. But this approach took time and $$$. Frames and components are really constrained, even now; takes time and patience:).
State is my local so seeing so many pictures of their fixed on here makes me so happy I have a State klunker that I converted from coaster brake to rim brake and I love it.
Ive been saving for a bike for the last year and watching this channel to get myself hyped...I decided to pull the trigger and get the Wabi special lol! I got it last month and i cant be more happy with it dude!! I know im sounding like a fanboy, but seriously!!! I wake up every morning and im stoked to go ride a bike that i love and enjoy. If your looking to get a new bike, or your first fixed gear i believe in spending a little extra money to get something more high quailty that you'll actually love to ride and that will last you a lifetime.
I just ordered the state black label frame……I ordered the matte black one and got the wu tang one. I wanted to black out my bike. I live in Canada and really am dreading sending it back and waiting 2 weeks again for possibly the same mistake 😂😂😂 I should have just ordered from retro-gression lol
There is no doubt about it... Look around and buy a quality, steel road frame with horizontal drop-outs. Cold set it to 120mm at the rear. It is easily done with a threaded bar and some nuts and washers. Look online. Then build up the bike using the parts you like. You will not regret it. Build your own wheels of you can.... No fishing needed on a Fixie rear.... All spokes the same length. I'd recommend a flip-flop rear hub, so you can change ratios easily. Quill stem if you can, because... they are better. You will always love a Fixie you build and it isn't difficult.
Great video I love my state! Minor blemishes in the finish but they were easy to deal with and offered fair compensation. I built a State 4130 Simpsons edition up from the frame. Kona p2 paddywagon forks instead of the ugly State fork. It's a rocket. Keep up the good work!
My fixie, a vilano rampage, is the cheapest yet most fun bike I own. Though I've replaced every component short of the headset and seat clamp with not so cheap stuff. Joytech flipflop wheelset with carton fiber modded rear Random aluminum fork I found at the bike collective Specialized Targa saddle GT "bullhorn" bars 28mm WTB Thickslick rear 23mm Michelin Speedium II front Sakae SX cranks + 52t shimano chainring I also have a pair of Small Block 8s (wire) for gravel rides
Got a cheap $350 1983 nishiki single speed and had it eventually converted to fixed at my lbs with some minor upgrades. Ended up being $500+ but i learnt a lot in the process and i like owning something different than a kilo tt
I own a 2020 Aventon Cordoba which was used as part of an Art installation. The Artist purchased the bike solely for its aesthetic qualities not for its technical abilities as a bogus track slayer. I have rebuilt her to be used as a training bike. Syntace stem, Ritchey WCS Streem bars, Sram s500 levers, Thomson elite layback seatpost, berk carbon saddle, oval concepts s900 rim brakes, white industries uno 17 tooth freewheel, BLB Super Pista 165 mm crank married to a 50 tooth CNC chainring. Shimano xt clipless pedals I had the lack lustre Push wheels re tensioned and I slapped on a pair of Continental Super Sport plus tyres in 25 mm. Even though Aventon is hated and seen by most cliquey Berlin fixie riders as a pretend fashion brand she is beautiful and can handle the tuff Berlin streets because I have in essence created something much better. My other bike, which is my actual race bike is an 2010 All City Nature Boy SSCX in the awesome lime colour.. completely binged out with Ritchey WCS parts in wet white, TRP EUROX magnesium cantilever breaks, Mavic Ksyrium Equipe wheels in white you get the jist, she is a real head turner, many Roadies on their 10 grand superbikes have stopped me to enquire about the steel beast. This is a cyclocross weapon, possibly the best bike I have built up and I've been building bikes for nearly 40 years. Blessings from Berlin
You should mention the State Bicycle Undefeated. I wish I bought it over the Black Label V2 especially now since they don't sell it in color black anymore. If I knew the Undefeated will be color white, I would of bought it.
Black label is a snobbery bicycle. Undefeated is something completely different. Names mean something, guys. Buy the name which seems to be what you associate with.
I got a 6ku and tbh it’s probably the best cheap one, 250 is a steal gor what you pay for. Its made out of aluminum and you can put 50$ into it and change alot of things. All ima do is collect parts and then trade or sell the frame and get a better frame
Was trying to buy a Wabi following you, unfortunately it was during the pandemic when I found you ,so instead i was looking for a feather because I seen it locked up outside in the East Village in Manhattan thought it was cool and light...chose to buy a 6160 statebicycle v2 olive from a dealer....i love it...i did change the crankset to an Aerodash..btw it freewheel.
You can build up a really sick bike with a Poseidon FX Tracklocross Frameset is an amazing price and high quality 6061 with monster clearance. This isn’t really a project for an entry level cyclist, it doesn’t always play nice with track specific components, 144 bcd with a 43 is a no go. It is not a Track bike, but it is perfect for a fixed gear that can go anywhere.
Idk, maybe I'm just wrong or dumb here but I've found buying a used bike and fixing it to be worth it. You can use custom parts, change to be how you want, and honestly, a questionable fixie is like 100$ It'll probably cost you more to fix it in the long run, but you don't gotta do it all at once and you get to start riding. I am still a big car person but I wanna keep miles off my car and gas is expensive. Compared to car mods, bikes feel affordable if not cheap to me. And I welcome the change.
Just buyed a used Roby classic, from fb market for £40 that has been roller painted with black paint, 😢........ such a nice bike, I will do it justice ⚖ and have it professionally stripped and painted. And will be my summer bike for next year 🎉🎉❤
Riding 1986 soviet track frameset(хвз рекорд) on modern components. Maybe i should send you some photos just to make american people see what is real steel streetboomber))))
If frame is straight and well made, who cares. Probably they made track bikes better than for general market. Late 80ies were crap for Soviet economy, so not sure.
Would be great to see you do a more up to date run through of cranksets. Years later now I'm looking at finally replacing my crankset (crank arms don't like to stay tight any more, probably misshapen, it's a Sturmey Archer FCT26). Looking around prices have changed a lot. I can get a Miche Pistard for less than Sugino RD2, for instance. Andel is not widely/readily available (at least in Europe) would love to see up to date opinions on quality and value!
My fixed gear was for the most part free. I love it. A 94 schwinn collegiate with velocity rear wheel and a five spoke mag front. And a bunch of free spare parts from my job. Pretty rad setup. Steel is real or whatever.
I got a coreline I have upgraded the rear to a 17t and "32" tires and I love it. The 32" continental tires with alot of grip fit perfect but it's quoted because the tire type has reviews that the tire clearance seems to be smaller then claimed. All this to say I love that bike despite riding mainly mountain bikes now but that thing feels great and is light could never sell it. Just a perspective for anyone that sees the comments.
That was gossip. Core line is a name for the manufacturer not you the customer. The manufacturer is sick of dealing with the idiot customer. They've named the product for their own life. The manufacturer is saying you're extremely uneducated and they aren't trying to teach you anything about the bikes.
Great video as always, although I am always doubtful of companies using ai imagery (State Bike Co.) in their promotional material. If they cut corners on simple things like that where else do they?
"Freedom Eagles" hahahhaha. I'm stealing that. =) Sometimes the best bike in the world is the bike you are on. Start at the beginning, keep moving forward. sometimes its good to give your ride away and start back at the beginning. pay it forward, ride hard, stay sane. =)
Those bikes you complain about, there's nothing wrong with them. High tensile steel bikes are fit for the job. They've been used for longer than you've been alive. Bike designers didn't stuff up. Its more likely that zach has stuffed up.
@@KokoFixed have you tried the wt or are you just saying that you're happy with the tt? Cuz outside of frame geometry, tire clearance and price, they're the same bike.

Hi, I live in Montreal ( CANADA / QUEBEC )!! Really cold and snowy during winter. I'm looking for a winter beginner fixed gear. Any suggestion ?? Have you heard about the brand MOOSE ??
Agree with your take on State. Great designs, quality components that you are going eventually upgrade/replace, but good price to entry. But their quality control is still an issue, nothing major, but should be noted.
Which is better frame tsunami snm100(alloy) or tsunami snm4130(chromoly). I'm a BMX rider just wanna try fixed gear they say it's dangerously fun to ride fixed gear.🤣✌🏻
I'm going to buy my first fixed gear, and I want it to be really good. I was thinking of buying a Fuji Feather, but now I like the Wabi Classic better. My only concern: is it possible to change the fix to a freewill on the Wabi? I know it is possible on the Fuji, but I'm not good at all this stuff, so please answer who knows!!!! (Im using translator.)
AVENTON Cordoba is the best bike for the money. Better than Wabi in every way. I've been riding one since 2019 and it's the fastest and most reliable fixed gear bike I've ever had.

@Bebo yeah, yeah, what does 'better' mean?
@Bebo ok sir, I guess 25 years or riding bikes, and being an engineer amount to nothing against the might of the Wabi and the expertise of the internet comment section, but I'll try to spell it out to you nonetheless:
1. you didn't explain anything, you shared a subjective opinion and backed it up with nothing, there are too many variables to control for and you're just deciding to pin the difference in feel to type of alloy, nice placebo. some bike magazine guys in the 90s did an experiment with a bunch of identical bikes made of different Columbus tubing and they could barely spot any difference between them, and could not tell which is which before the steel types were revealed for each bike. They were all the same size, geo, and kitted out with the same parts (note how size and geometry are different things);
2. again, I'm not hating on the Wabi, it sounds like a great bike and they use some dope alloys to make them, I certainly wouldn't say no to one. on the other hand I'm questioning weather the praise is legit, given how highly the basic Dolan frame is regarded by the person doing the praise (I have an FXE which is Basically a Precursa with mounts);
3. frame material matters (steel, C, Al, Ti), but type of steel much less (see point 1. above). there are many characteristics of the tubes themselves that can matter more than alloy type (butting, profile, thickness, welded or braised, and most of all GEOMETRY) and a whole load of other bike parts that can make a difference to how it feels: stem and saddle length and height, BB height, wheels and tyres, width of the BB shell and crankset QR factor, even the crank length provides a more noticeable difference in 'feel' than the type of steel alloy, and don't even get me started on angles;
4. your 'feel' of the bike is irrelevant, people feel like they're going faster on 23 mm tyres, but they're not, science proved that larger volume tyres have less rolling resistance. however, you do get one bit right - smaller frames are stiffer regardless of what alloy they're made of, so take that as you will regarding your Titanium vs Wabi comparison;
5. spend more time on Sheldon Brown's website, maybe you'll learn a thing or two before arguing with engineers on the internet, and while you're at it, visit Hambini's RUclips channel as well, you'll gain an appreciation for build quality and tolerances and maybe grow to appreciate NJS bikes to their fullest after seeing what the modern bike industry tries to pull off;
6. all I did in my original comment was to highlight all the cool European brands that Zach seems to ignore, you brought in an NJS comparison with loose terms and sprinkled subjectivity on it, complimented me for being a kid (thank you, after an age it's nice to be thought of as young) and then dismissed my opinion because of some wild assumptions on your behalf...
I just looked up the "Tracklocross" bikes , that's much better then the others i'v been looking at . thanks for posting that comment.
The best bikes are built by the rider, full of quality components taken from random bikes that are ready to retire, then combined into a machine brought to life by your own hands and ridden hard just short of your own death.
🤘💀
No, those riders are dead.
The best bikes are already sold.

Hey Zach, any tips for doing a complete build build starting with only a frameset, first time. How to pick components + how to build?
that is an awesome idea. would watch for sure.
State is my local so seeing so many pictures of their fixed on here makes me so happy
I have a State klunker that I converted from coaster brake to rim brake and I love it.
Do you have a speedo gauge on that?
Ive been saving for a bike for the last year and watching this channel to get myself hyped...I decided to pull the trigger and get the Wabi special lol! I got it last month and i cant be more happy with it dude!! I know im sounding like a fanboy, but seriously!!! I wake up every morning and im stoked to go ride a bike that i love and enjoy. I just looked at Wabi Classic and I'm already addicted!
What are your thoughts on State” wheels and bottom brackets for a budget bike? Reliable, and functional?
My fixie, a vilano rampage, is the cheapest yet most fun bike I own. Though I've replaced every component short of the headset and seat clamp with not so cheap stuff.
Joytech flipflop wheelset with carton fiber modded rear
Random aluminum fork I found at the bike collective
Specialized Targa saddle
GT "bullhorn" bars
28mm WTB Thickslick rear
23mm Michelin Speedium II front
Sakae SX cranks + 52t shimano chainring
I also have a pair of Small Block 8s (wire) for gravel rides
Now I want to know how great a Wabi really is

I own a 2020 Aventon Cordoba which was used as part of an Art installation. The Artist purchased the bike solely for its aesthetic qualities not for its technical abilities as a bogus track slayer. I have rebuilt her to be used as a training bike. Syntace stem, Ritchey WCS Streem bars, Sram s500 levers, Thomson elite layback seatpost, berk carbon saddle, oval concepts s900 rim brakes, white industries uno 17 tooth freewheel, BLB Super Pista 165 mm crank married to a 50 tooth CNC chainring. Shimano xt clipless pedals

This isn’t really a project for an entry level cyclist, it doesn’t always play nice with track specific components, 144 bcd with a 43 is a no go. It is not a Track bike, but it is perfect for a fixed gear that can go anywhere.
Do you haver any recommendations for a single speed/3 speed/7 speed. Affordable and reliability is all I need/want.

Idk, maybe I'm just wrong or dumb here but I've found buying a used bike and fixing it to be worth it.
