I remember "Old School" - A memory from 1955. I left for school and my Dad was starting to hand dig a drainage field (Leach line) for the septic tank that he had just put in using wood forms and hand-mixed concrete. When I got back from school, the drainage line was done. Fifty feet long, 18 inches wide and 3 feet deep. The soil was mostly clay with lots of rocks, so this was pick and shovel work at its worst. My Dad had injured his back in WWII, had a VA disability, was known to have back pain every waking moment. Yet, He moved over 8 cubic yards of dirt by hand during the time I was in school. That is nearly the capacity of a dump truck, one shovel at a time.
Joe, if the gravel is coming the next day, Leppo Rents was indeed the wise choice.

Believe it or not I already have one. I think that is what caused much of the problems my land has with drainage. The previous owner put it in and really butchered it up.

You will get better Joe it only takes a few hours on the controls and you will be fluent, But I think you made a great decision too do it yourself because not only will you save money but you will have the knowledge and skills for other future projects

I've been advocating their usefulness in woodyards for years.
As has been mentioned already, get in some time on it out in the open well away from anything of any value before you start into tricky stuff in target-rich environments.
Like all new machine operating, take your time and don't be afraid to stop and think before moving a control. After a little while, you'll be looking at what you're doing with the bucket and the control inputs will just 'happen' in your subconscious.
Slow and smooth, slow and smooth.

Thanks! I had an old boss that never was able to have fun or let anyone around him enjoy themselves. It took me a while to figure out that he was so completely insecure in his position that if others around him were laughing and enjoying he felt that to be a threat to his authority. Some people can be weird.

i been telling all you youtube firewood guys for years that a mini excavator with a hydraulic thumb is the best machine for producing firewood, i produce 200 full cords a year just me and a mini excavator and a bunch of chainsaws and splitters and even a splitter that hangs off the excavator… trade the tractor in!
I am in agreement with you based upon just the machine but the cost of owning one is WAY too prohibitive for me. AND if this thing ever broke I'm sure you would be putting out big $$. For now I will stay with my tractor (under warranty LOL)

Excavators are a real handy thing to have around can’t wait to have one in my Arsenal lol ran them for 6 years for a company and now rent them for my landscapes company I think a skid steer will be first on my equipment list however !!
It is an amazing machine. I can't get over how powerful this thing is.
@@ohiowoodburner 5 tons are a great machine as they have a bit of weight behind them to preform bigger tasks but are small enough to do small tasks as well!!

When i did my driveway, i just used the blade. Faster than using the bucket. Use your tractor to level out the stone.

I was in your predicament many years ago before that type of excavator became a thing so I bought a very second hand backhoe to use on my property.
It took me about half an hour before I could dig a hole where I wanted it.
Within a day or two you won't just be using the controls as you were shown because you'll quickly graduate to performing multiple functions at once with each hand as you pull the bucket towards you while scooping with the bucket and slewing etc.
It quickly becomes a no thought process like changing gears in a manual car.
My backhoe was the best toy I ever owned even walking itself out of bog holes just using the buckets.
I hear you TB but I don't think being an operator is in my future. This thing is super complicated for me LOL

You were off to a good start with the world’s best wheelbarrow but I bet 20 minutes into it you will wonder if you will be done by spring.
Hang in there on the equipment. It takes some getting used to. I am still good for a few laughs when I get in the cab of any of those. I was fairly dangerous the first time I got in and that was in an open field!

@@ohiowoodburner neither did I. Take it real slow until you get the hang of it, be patient, and make sure you don’t have any cameras rolling until you get real good at it.

Your funniest intro yet!🤣 Joe, those machines are great at pulling and lifting average size trees out of the woods as long as it's not to steep. Holds tree off the ground for limbing. But that's probably too much work for you processor guys!😁

If you can put 4yds³ into your dump trailer (±15 excavator buckets), it's only 27 loads of dirt to dump.
Only?? LOL.
Each load gets you closer. This fix is permanent. Over time and convenience, this will be very cost effective.
Remember material handling is material handling, whether firewood or muck from the driveway path. The less you handle and rehandle the better. I would suggest loading the muck out into the dump trailer and dump it somewhere out of the way. Also, my dad would yell at me about over extending or over travel on the hydraulic activated parts, only move them as far as you need every inch more is wasted time and effort. You got this.
That is the truth Joel. There is a lot of material that has to go somehwere!

Good morning Joe. Nice machine. I’ve rented that same size excavator several times before. In my early years, I probably would have tried the shovel method until my back and helpers started screaming. To bad you couldn’t have invited Adam back over with his neighbor Doug. This entire thing would be done by lunch. The main thing with running that machine is getting your hand movements in sync with your brain and eyes. With your experience on your tractor, I suspect that this will be a short learning curve for you. You should consider doing a live stream while you are digging

Get good at operator this excavator Joe and next fall I will let you operate my combine lol. Have no doubt in you Joe at all that you will learn how to operate this excavator faster than it took you to learn to operate your tractor because now you already have the feel of operating hydraulics levers and the touch as well as the bigger equipment. In a few hours you will be a pro at it

Regarding oil and filter changes on your trucks do not use the quickie oil change joints. Find a small repair shop that ideally is one or two mechanics as the quickie oil change joints utilize minimum wage personnel that are not professional. I made the mistake of going to one years ago with a brand new engine ( 5 liter ) and the idiot in the oil drain pit didn’t tighten the drain plug, just finger tight. 18 miles later the drain plug fell out at 65 mph on the highway and destroyed the engine then tried to weasel out of replacing the engine when I told him it was less than 1200 miles installed by my Lincoln dealer. I tried to get them to do the oil and filter but they didn’t have an open appointment for three days.

I hear you on that Jim. I usually just do it myself bc the Trucks are super easy to do but I usually use the local Ford dealer when they have a coupon. It is almost the same price for me to do it myself.

When I got my first backhoe the delivery guy showed me the controls. The fields were planted and nowhere to dig close by. So I tested it on our gravel drive by the barn. By the time dad got home from work I had a 6 foot deep hole 8 feet acrossed in the farm drive. Needless to say dad aske what the heck are you doing? I said well I had to test the machine and learn. It was the closest place I could dig. He was so mad. I covered it up and packed it in. I think he forgave me. Peace

If you spend a lot of money but you not get the drainage right, the quality of the repair will be low. Cost is always a concern for a business. Will you tell us the cost? We had some dirt roads out in the country. The better roads had some gravel put on top of them. Dirt roads are serviceable until it rains.
Good project!! I wonder how much the final cost will be compared to just hiring a contractor. I predict 50% savings.
there is definitely a savings but I have already run into something that I am not sure how the contractor would have charged...

The increase in productivity coupled with reduced rental charges could offset the labour cost. All your loyal subscribers will follow your road project with increasing interest.
