  • P-51 Mustang "Lucky Lady VII": Rolls-Royce Merlin V12 engine start up with flames out of the exhausts and smoke clouds. Take off and flyover even with a barrel roll causes great Merlin engine sound!
North American P-51 Mustang "Lucky Lady VII" is a true flying legend. The P-51 was a stunning all-around fighter aircraft with US origin during World War II and even later wars. Long range, outstanding maneuverability, superior speed and excellent high and low altitude performances made the P-51 the world's most famous fighter plane of all time. The heart of the P-51 Mustang is the high performance Packard-built Rolls-Royce Merlin V12 engine. Its distinctive roar make the heart of any plane enthusiast beat faster.

Imagine firing one of these up during the war, to go off looking for trouble. Sights ready, destiny uncertain, those pilots must have been amped.
The days of the aerial gunfighter, where the combat was so close you could feel the heat on your ass. No technological tricks to get you home, only your wits and your trigger finger on those six .50 cal Brownings.
The jet age brought about armchair warfare. But in those days, the skies were as alive as any battlefield.

Gus VanHorn. I’m in Michigan and every year they have what they call “Thunder over Michigan”. Its mostly WW2 planes. It’s a pretty big air show. This years theme was getting the most Corsairs together. There was 11 flying together. This is where I rode in FIFi a couple yrs ago. It was a Father’s Day gift. It was the highlight of my life. They’ve had 109’s, 190’s even a Lancaster besides all the usual American planes.

What a plane! P51 and Spitfire are the two prettiest planes ever made IMHO - and share an all time great engine. Spitfire probably better in a dog fight but Mustang had much better range so made a fantastic bomber escort. I think Rolls Royce spitfire merlins were producing 2000 hp by the end of the war whereas the Packard engines in the mustang were more like 1700 hp. Both sound equally awesome!

    • @joeh5028
      @joeh5028 8 лет назад +4

I agree Jonothethird, both are beautiful airplanes. Good call on the HP numbers...2035 for the Spit and 1720 for the Mustang. The Spitfire's rate of climb was over 2000 ft. / minute better than the Mustang...range MUCH shorter...reflecting it's design as an interceptor vs the Mustangs role as a long range escort fighter with it's new (for then) Laminar Flow airfoil.

Packard Merlin Lord Beaverbrook Minister of Aircraft Production The best production I ever saw was a job with which the Ministry had nothing to do, nothing at all. It was the production of the Rolls-Royce engines in the United States. It was done by the Pack hard Company. There was not a single representative of the Ministry there to supervise and only four representatives of the Rolls-Royce firm. The job was most 809
wonderfully done. In no time at all, production had been got under way. The output from that firm is remarkable. The Packhard Rolls-Royce engine is an example to the whole world. There was a very good American aeroplane called the Mustang. The engine of the Mustang was giving good service, but some genius had the idea of putting Rolls-Royce engines into the Mustangs, and the result is a very good aeroplane, one of the best in the world-some people will say the very best. That was the result of this project in America over which the Ministry had no supervision, although the contract was made here by the Minister.

No, you're very wrong, they modified the design to meet their production methods. They did use a different and better alloy for the Big End bearings, which R-R then changed for their even better alloy. Apart from that, all Packard did was modify the Blue Prints to their production methods.... The Starter motor was locally sourced along with the mags and some carbs. Even the production threads there Whitworth, which Packard had to reproduce...

Precious Metal had a Rolls-Royce Griffon and still does but is still gonna be in the shop 4 awhile under repair and gonna receive a new fuselage. So all Mustangs with Rolls-Royce Merlins originally had Packard Merlins but were swapped out 4 Rolls-Royce Merlins.

This is not a Rolls Royce engine, but a Packard V-1650-7 engine. When tests showed the improvement of the P-51B when mated to the Rolls-Royce engine, Packard Motor Company was asked to build the Rolls Royce Merlin Engine under license in the USA. Instead, Packard studied the design and built an entirely new, bigger, and more powerful engine; the V-1650, which gave the P-51 even more speed and power.
Top speed was 458 mph at 29,000 feet for the V-1650-3 equipped Mustangs (Mostly B's and C's and many early D models) and 448 mph at 25, 000 for the later D model mustangs using the V-1650-7 engines.

WW2 allowed engineers to take piston aircraft engines to max horse power the goal was not exactly longevity of the engine, or max reliability more less performance was the goal.

The videos dont do the Merlin justice.
For those of you who have yet to hear one, it doesnt pitter patter putter like a dinky little ww1 plane (all due respect.)
Even the starting pops are like little grenades going off (but not as loud)
    Like poom poom pom pompom.
And when it gets going, a Merlin *rumbles.*
It sounds like a row of big motorcycles.
    *MRMRMRMRMRMRMRMRMRMRMRMRM*
It sounds like a _War_ engine!
It *wants* to be pushed to the limit!
    It wants to *fly.*
If you ever get an opportunity to see a Spitfire, or a Mustang, do it.
The Merlin has earned its great reputation for a reason.

I'm almost positive the manual prohibits flight in the D Mustang with the canopy open because of the way it disrupts airflow over the tail.

In the RAF, 2nd Tactical Air Force, everybody flew the planes that were available. The are about 100 photos of the squadron planes on the net around the time of DDay, that my Dad flew. The squadron leader might fly one in the morning, he flew it in the afternoon. Needless to say they got bashed around a lot in France.

Thank you very much for your comment. It was certainly an extreme challenge. When I flew this beautiful P-51 a few years ago, I met an old man. He looked at the aircraft with big eyes and said that he had been shot down by such a plane in WWII. That was absolutely crazy!

Thank you for your comment! You're absolutely right. The Mustang P-51, an iconic World War II fighter aircraft, was indeed manufactured under license by Packard Motors to strict Rolls Royce specifications. The United States needed more aircraft, and the Mustang became a crucial asset for the Allied forces. Interestingly, the Mustang had a top speed of around 437 mph (703 km/h) and a range of approximately 1,650 miles (2,655 km). It's a true legend of aviation history! 😊✈️

Historical fact: the Mustangs weren’t originally using Merlin engines, that was a modification by the RAF(who were the first ones to use them) and then later Rolls Royce allowed the Packard Motor Company to produce Merlin engines under license. This was later put in every Mustang and was part of what got the Mustangs accepted into USAF service

My partner and I have put on Airshows and flown in a D model and an H model the sounds and take off are deafening and they are fast, they use about 65 gallons an hour at cruise. On the H model the pilot "stood it on it's prop" and we went straight up. The D is 1,650 hp.It has a top speed of 427mph . The B (Inglewood, CA manufactured) and the C (Dallas, TX ) manufactured has a top speed of 447mph. The H is the lightest 1,500 pounds difference than the D which they made most of that model. North American makes good aircraft, B-25', AT6, SNJ
