- P-51 Mustang "Lucky Lady VII": Rolls-Royce Merlin V12 engine start up with flames out of the exhausts and smoke clouds. Take off and flyover even with a barrel roll causes great Merlin engine sound!
North American P-51 Mustang "Lucky Lady VII" is a true flying legend. The P-51 was a stunning all-around fighter aircraft with US origin during World War II and even later wars. Long range, outstanding maneuverability, superior speed and excellent high and low altitude performances made the P-51 the world's most famous fighter plane of all time. The heart of the P-51 Mustang is the high performance Packard-built Rolls-Royce Merlin V12 engine. Its distinctive roar make the heart of any plane enthusiast beat faster.

The P 51 produced 1695 horse power and topped out at 437 mph at 25 thousand feet. Amazing plane for it's time...
It's not the hp that amazes. P47's had like 1000 more hp's.
It's still amazing. It's not a spectacular performer anymore, but it's still an incredible and beautiful plane.
There were faster and more powerful aircraft of the same era. Spitfire XIV for example. But it is the development of the performance of these aircraft that is most amazing
O MUSTANG marcou prensença na guerra da Coréia e em outros conflitos com supremacia absoluta. Foi sem dúvida alguma um dos melhores caças do mundo. SOU fã desse caça.
And then it got overtook by a ME 262.
you can never beat the sound of the Rolls-Royce Merlin

The sweetest sound in aviation, a Merlin at full throttle!
True! Best sounds!
@@matthiashaenniif my Mustang flies over me or snare and the percentage I recognize the sound of the engine, one day I came out of one of my presentations and flew directly over my head and I was so successful was a P-51 Mustang in the place where it should never I would never expect to have that treat
The sweetest sound in aviation, is a Merlin at full throttle, pushing a P51 Mustang!
Met this guy in person, impressive aircraft.
Beautiful! Cadillac of the skies.
Imagine firing one of these up during the war, to go off looking for trouble. Sights ready, destiny uncertain, those pilots must have been amped.
The days of the aerial gunfighter, where the combat was so close you could feel the heat on your ass. No technological tricks to get you home, only your wits and your trigger finger on those six .50 cal Brownings.
The jet age brought about armchair warfare. But in those days, the skies were as alive as any battlefield.
That was true flying.
Well stated. Man and machine, direct link, no electronics.
Dog fights.
And most of these guys were around 24 yrs old!...how many early 20s "men" today would have the balls to fly a bird like that!
Duane Dahl jr im 24 and id sure as hell would fly a bird like this. This is man and machine. Just because most millenials are dumb does not mean we all are. I own an old carburated Mustang and this thing mechanically is very similar in technology. Just wayyyyy older.
What an amazing startup nothing beats it
Thank you!
Chuck Yeager gave them hell in his P-51. Helluva guy. Still around at 96.
I read his book General Chuck Yeager. It is very, very interesting, a real pageturner!
I just freaking love this WW2 airplanes...
Magnificent, every single one from every country
WISHED I HAD ONE , JUST LIKE THAT !
my grandfather was a master sergeant in the air force for 40 years serving wwii, Korean War and Vietnam. He was a master mechanic, I have pictures of him rebuilding Rolls-Royce merlin engines. He said his favorite plane was the p51 .
Thank you for sharing your memories. P51 meant the coronation of flights to me.
I have two (2) Rolls-Royce Merlin Crankshafts available.

1:53-2:00, that sound sends a chill up my spine every time!
Incredible sound, distinctive and unforgettable. For the enemy the sound meant almost certain death, but as a plane enthusiast the sound is just as iconic as the design of the plane itself. The whole aircraft is a pure masterpiece of engineering.
yea the merlin sounds great. to bad this mustang was missing all its true sound. however this one is not... ruclips.net/video/h5fjKEXXPQ8/видео.html

Wonderful stuff, gotta love the P-51
Best flight I have ever made in this stunning aircraft!!!
Music to my ears
Glad you enjoyed it! The sound of the Rolls-Royce Merlin engine on the P-51 Mustang is truly iconic and music to many aviation enthusiasts' ears! 🎵✈️
I never forget being a eight-year-old on 9-10 year-old and, getting it as a toy, they showing us as little children the highest technology that they had at the time, I have to start with the pellet plans before I go to the Jets, the jet technology was magnificently masterpiece broke out very badly in the beginning of it but we've learned that we have to protect our technology

No, but thank you for asking.
A truly NICE "paint" finish, exactly as during the war BARE ALUMINUM with only squadron markings.

Geezus, how cool is this!?...
Would love to fly in a P-51.
Id like to pilot one and im 16 years old
someone somewhere will ask you to pay for that. go fiend me.
Gus VanHorn that’s a steal at $500. It’s $1500 or more for a P-51 ride when I was checking. I rode in the B29 “FiFi” and that was only $550.
Gus VanHorn. I’m in Michigan and every year they have what they call “Thunder over Michigan”. Its mostly WW2 planes. It’s a pretty big air show. This years theme was getting the most Corsairs together. There was 11 flying together. This is where I rode in FIFi a couple yrs ago. It was a Father’s Day gift. It was the highlight of my life. They’ve had 109’s, 190’s even a Lancaster besides all the usual American planes.

The RR Merlín sounds great in the P-51.
The best! Thanks for watching & comment.
Thanks for making sure to mention Packard built. (Also improved upon)
Improved maybe, but by far the best engine to tweak.

The most beautiful aircraft ever built!
That P 51 very well could be the one that was at Evergreen Museum in Oregon
The P51 Mustang was a man's plane.
Klasse Video!Habe vor kurzem selbst eine gefilmt!Gruss inselvideo!
Has to be said one of the best sounding engines of all times 😊
Oh yes! Goosebumps are included in this sound :) Cheers
Angels on our shoulders..
Game sound engineers that has to get over a hundred different startup sounds on their game's P-51 for realistic feeling: WRITE THAT DOWN
I guess the airfield has kept the Merlin engine in really good condition.
What a plane! P51 and Spitfire are the two prettiest planes ever made IMHO - and share an all time great engine. Spitfire probably better in a dog fight but Mustang had much better range so made a fantastic bomber escort. I think Rolls Royce spitfire merlins were producing 2000 hp by the end of the war whereas the Packard engines in the mustang were more like 1700 hp. Both sound equally awesome!
I agree Jonothethird, both are beautiful airplanes. Good call on the HP numbers...2035 for the Spit and 1720 for the Mustang. The Spitfire's rate of climb was over 2000 ft. / minute better than the Mustang...range MUCH shorter...reflecting it's design as an interceptor vs the Mustangs role as a long range escort fighter with it's new (for then) Laminar Flow airfoil.
@soaringtractor I know this was over two years ago but why so much vitriol over such a beautiful airplane? Truly bizarre. Why do people do this?
Butte Hauser because he’s an old tossed who has nothing better to do than use his only functioning brain cells to try and prove a small point that Varies from day to day by picking through “facts” he finds online (which seem to always sway towards the Americans) and bleating them out everywhere he sees fit, he’s got no respect for the pilots and engineers because he’s a typical yank.
The sound is just beautiful when it flies over
Nate dawg115 that was the sound of an impending ass whooping.
If you were a 22 year old on a B17 you were the old man !
Yes, you definitely were.
Very cool. Flying a beautiful airplane that makes such a glorious sound. It Can't get any better than that :)
I flew from England to the Czech Republic in this aircraft in 2005 - lovely machine.
When the Rolls-Royce engine was coupled with the turbochargers she was a Mustang

Absolutely incredible aircraft it is my life long dream to fly one I would go to war for the opportunity
Alex Duke Stallion51 in Florida has a few 2 seater mustangs that you can fly with an instructor and even record in your logbook. However it's pretty expensive
@@airjordan1325 really!? I wonder how expensive is pretty expensive. I'll have to look into it thanks. the closest I'll ever get to owning one is the a scale kit type. like the t51 for example.

what was closing in the belly of the plane? as if they were the covers of the landing gear? at the time of starting the engine, something closed
Packard Merlin Lord Beaverbrook Minister of Aircraft Production The best production I ever saw was a job with which the Ministry had nothing to do, nothing at all. It was the production of the Rolls-Royce engines in the United States. It was done by the Pack hard Company. There was not a single representative of the Ministry there to supervise and only four representatives of the Rolls-Royce firm. The job was most 809
wonderfully done. In no time at all, production had been got under way. The output from that firm is remarkable. The Packhard Rolls-Royce engine is an example to the whole world. There was a very good American aeroplane called the Mustang. The engine of the Mustang was giving good service, but some genius had the idea of putting Rolls-Royce engines into the Mustangs, and the result is a very good aeroplane, one of the best in the world-some people will say the very best. That was the result of this project in America over which the Ministry had no supervision, although the contract was made here by the Minister.

I love the starup, you can realy see how the flaps and the wheel cover move up once the hydrolic pressure is there :3 and the flames she spits out befor fireing up look just awesome. beautifull plane
the mustang was originally designed to use the allison v-1710 engine which had limited high altitude performance. It was 1st flown by the royal air-force as a tactical recon and fighter bomber (mk1) they added the rolls royce merlin to the b & c models which blew them away (15000 feet) packard made the engines under licence to rolls it was the rolls engine that made them haul you know what (YOU CANT BEAT THE SOUND OF A P51) Steve from aussieland
Rolls Royce my ass.. Its the PACKARD MERLIN the American version with half of all components replaced with US made hardware..
Bullshit.. Its not a Rolls Royce anymore...
Willie Eckerslike still ut was different Packard improved the engine
All Merlins are Rolls Royce!
No, you're very wrong, they modified the design to meet their production methods. They did use a different and better alloy for the Big End bearings, which R-R then changed for their even better alloy. Apart from that, all Packard did was modify the Blue Prints to their production methods.... The Starter motor was locally sourced along with the mags and some carbs. Even the production threads there Whitworth, which Packard had to reproduce...
Thank you Britain for the awesome engine - thank you America for the awesome plane. Put them together & you beat the crap out of your enemy

Mustang P-51 Air Cadillac... seee
Some CAC built Mustangs had “Rolls-Royce” built Merlins, but usually a Mustang completely stock wood be Packard, but u’ll also find, not only Packards with Rolls Royce heads and cylinders but also complete Rolls Royce Merlins in racing P-51s at Reno, such as Voodoo and Strega. Precious Metal had a Rolls-Royce Griffon and still does but is still gonna be in the shop 4 awhile under repair and gonna receive a new fuselage. So all Mustangs with Rolls-Royce Merlins originally had Packard Merlins but were swapped out 4 Rolls-Royce Merlins.

Thanks 😁
I want one in my living room. Would be great to sit in while watching TV. Incredible planes with incredible sound.
Absolutely stunning aircraft!
thats a nice Cessna
Goosebumps....
I melt when I hear that Merlin that's the last thing zero pilots heard before they got shot down
@@kirbyvanduzer6565 and 109 pilots
This is not a Rolls Royce engine, but a Packard V-1650-7 engine. When tests showed the improvement of the P-51B when mated to the Rolls-Royce engine, Packard Motor Company was asked to build the Rolls Royce Merlin Engine under license in the USA. Instead, Packard studied the design and built an entirely new, bigger, and more powerful engine; the V-1650, which gave the P-51 even more speed and power.
Top speed was 458 mph at 29,000 feet for the V-1650-3 equipped Mustangs (Mostly B's and C's and many early D models) and 448 mph at 25, 000 for the later D model mustangs using the V-1650-7 engines.
A true rumble in the jungle.
Haha i sat under this plane while it was raining. Such a beautiful aircraft.
WW2 allowed engineers to take piston aircraft engines to max horse power the goal was not exactly longevity of the engine, or max reliability more less performance was the goal.
The videos dont do the Merlin justice.
For those of you who have yet to hear one, it doesnt pitter patter putter like a dinky little ww1 plane (all due respect.)
Even the starting pops are like little grenades going off (but not as loud)
Like poom poom pom pompom.
And when it gets going, a Merlin *rumbles.*
It sounds like a row of big motorcycles.
*MRMRMRMRMRMRMRMRMRMRMRMRM*
It sounds like a _War_ engine!
It *wants* to be pushed to the limit!
It wants to *fly.*
If you ever get an opportunity to see a Spitfire, or a Mustang, do it.
The Merlin has earned its great reputation for a reason.
Aww its not a P-51 though, this variant is a TF-51
Mamamia! what a awesome Warbird I think its more better than a Messerschmitt Me 109 with a Daimler Benz DB605 Engine
Love this merican fighter
Sounds like my Triumph Rocket 3 Roadster
I'm almost positive the manual prohibits flight in the D Mustang with the canopy open because of the way it disrupts airflow over the tail.
Yes I know but it's funny because I've seen a pic of a P51D in flight with the canopy fully open. Must have been straight and level only...
My FAVORITE plane!
Most amazing aircraft indeed.
Like the P-47, the aluminium overcast and the bubble canopy does it.
Wow, so impressive 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
the aircraft is amazing beautiful startup I would love to fly this
ww2 was the peak of aviation. the planes had soul. im not interested in modern aircraft.
In the RAF, 2nd Tactical Air Force, everybody flew the planes that were available. The are about 100 photos of the squadron planes on the net around the time of DDay, that my Dad flew. The squadron leader might fly one in the morning, he flew it in the afternoon. Needless to say they got bashed around a lot in France.
Thank you very much for your comment. It was certainly an extreme challenge. When I flew this beautiful P-51 a few years ago, I met an old man. He looked at the aircraft with big eyes and said that he had been shot down by such a plane in WWII. That was absolutely crazy!
Made under licence by Packard motors to strict Rolls Royce Spec.Britain could not make enough for US aircraft and Spitfire.Hurricane .Lancaster and Mosquito.
Thank you for your comment! You're absolutely right. The Mustang P-51, an iconic World War II fighter aircraft, was indeed manufactured under license by Packard Motors to strict Rolls Royce specifications. The United States needed more aircraft, and the Mustang became a crucial asset for the Allied forces. Interestingly, the Mustang had a top speed of around 437 mph (703 km/h) and a range of approximately 1,650 miles (2,655 km). It's a true legend of aviation history! 😊✈️
SSSSSSweet sound !!! One of the best Aircraft ever made !!! Greetings from Italy !!!
Historical fact: the Mustangs weren’t originally using Merlin engines, that was a modification by the RAF(who were the first ones to use them) and then later Rolls Royce allowed the Packard Motor Company to produce Merlin engines under license. This was later put in every Mustang and was part of what got the Mustangs accepted into USAF service
My partner and I have put on Airshows and flown in a D model and an H model the sounds and take off are deafening and they are fast, they use about 65 gallons an hour at cruise. On the H model the pilot "stood it on it's prop" and we went straight up. The D is 1,650 hp.It has a top speed of 427mph . The B (Inglewood, CA manufactured) and the C (Dallas, TX ) manufactured has a top speed of 447mph. The H is the lightest 1,500 pounds difference than the D which they made most of that model. North American makes good aircraft, B-25', AT6, SNJ
That would be hanging it on the prop if you went straight up not standing it that would be straight down
0:08 spitting flames! Also awesome sound!
Thank you 🙏
the wonderful MUSTANG =) thanks for the video
What a beautiful sound. Terrifying to German troops
The best American fighter plane ever when the Japanese zeros came at our bombers they were jumped by squadron's of p51 mustang's they didn't see it coming what a beautiful American legend I'm a big aviation fan long live aviation of all types

"Rolls" Merlin or "Packard" Merlin in this 51. Packard thought they made better Merlins than Rolls. Just sayin'
