My mom was in Germany as an elementary school kid, watching Germany bombed day and night.. lost three brothers.
Never seen her father till he escaped a mountain that built German truck motors, 24/7 for the last 4 years of the war.
They ate what ever died after a bombing.....
      Fresh animals or people...
They boiled most of what they ate..
Water from any source, muddy water mostly, or bloody water.

My mother was a teenager in Hiroshima during WW2! She used to see dogfights right over her high school. She surprised us once by knowing all of the American and Japanese fighter planes by name. She especially liked the P-38. She saw the atomic bomb go off, and was fortunate to be too far away to be injured or killed, but two uncles and their families were vaporized in the blast. Nothing was ever found of any of them.

Announcers. Many years ago at an EAFB airshow, I did something that was wwaaayyy out of character for me. As the Thunderbirds demo squadron did their famous "waterfall" maneuver, the announcer went, "... and this looks just like a waterfall, don't it folks." Then... in the middle of the huge crowd... I yelled out, "Oh no it doesn't!" The resulting greatest laughter seemed to come from further away. (That figured. A small, small voice in the distance, seeming to say 'the king has no clothes'.)

Near the end the tiger tank explodes -from what? Pffft Capt. Miller's revolver? Really??? -But then with a shout:

When I was 10, my Dad took me and my Uncle to the Mojave air races. It was really great seeing all the old airplanes cutting in close to the pylons almost sideways going faster then I had ever seen them flying before but then, inbound from my right came a bright red plane. The sound it made as it closed in could only be described as an ongoing roll of thunder coming closer and closer. My eyes were fixed on this red image as it flew past me faster then anything I had ever seen before. A slight whistle, a mind numbing roar and two props! I then heard my Dad tell my Uncle that plane was The Red Barron. The only Mustang ever built with something called counter rotating props. I had no idea what that meant and didn't really care. All I knew is that plane was more beautiful than the prettiest woman I had ever seen on TV with an exhaust sound so powerful and sweet that it removed any doubt as to why in World War Two it was the single most feared airplane around and why the Tuskegee Airmen loved it so much. Even today, hearing the sound of the Mustang's 12cyl Merlin engine makes the hair on the back of my neck stand up. The P-51D will always be for me a true to life work of aerial art in every respect.

P-51 is faster, especially with 150 octane at 72-75" mp (USAAF) or 81"mp (RAF), dives faster and turns faster, has longer range and rolls faster at high speed. Spitfire IX/VIII have climb rate equal or superior to 109 G-10 and K-4 depending on fuel octane used and has far better turn rate, rolls faster at low speed but has slower top speed and dive. Spitfire Mk XIV using +21lbs boost is superior to late 109s in every way except dive.

Fabulous post, thank you. My Father was part of the team at Rolls Royce that was tasked with the responsibility of getting as much power out of the Merlin as possible........they did a great job eh! I so wish I has sat him down in front of a camera and interviewed him about all this before he died........big regret.

Great vid Paddy. I love the sound of those magnificent engines. The P51 is pretty plane and this one particularly so with the gorgeous shade of blue. I also love the sound of the steel slide guitar. A great accompaniment for the walk around.

The mustang had a superior airframe and wings. It could escort bombers into Germany where the Spitfire could not. FACT. It was much greater than the sum of it’s parts. It was far ahead and faster than a Spitfire. FACT.

notformebeaky ..sure all cool. The P51 was the first fighter escort with sufficient range to stay all the way with the bombers but I’m guessing the Cadillac is not known for its fuel economy !!

Amazing video.. Incredible airplane. If you can place yourself in a scenario where this plane is coming after you. Its a pretty helpless situation. It is really a scary looking nemesis. Yet, still a stunningly beautiful airplane. Still exuding a superior confidence and grace 78 years later....

The allies needed an escort that could cross the channel, dog-fight the Messershmits AND still escort(the B-17's) home. The "Skunkworks" got out a prototype P-51 in an AMAZING 6 weeks. This big bird could cruise at ~450mph and only use 60 gallons an hour. That's pretty decent fuel economy. We also used drop tanks, for range. When the dog fight started and it was time to drop the tanks, they acted like little bombs.
