    One of the great things about general aviation is the freedom and autonomy that still exists in the endeavor. Much like motorcycling, it seems to be one of the few pursuits left that allows for real, personal, risk assessment. I was going to pass judgment on the decision to fly the bird with that type of known discrepancy (not done in commercial aviation). However, that would be counter to the premise that personal risk taking is essential to the preservation of personal freedom. I'm glad to see people taking personal risks, and living life fully, in this modern world of safety activism😷. Good show!🇺🇸

    Great to see another flying video. I've flown the Piper Warrior belonging to a friend of mine, a couple of times. It's interesting to see the differences in flying in Europe as compared to Canada where I live. We use atmospheric pressure as measured from the airport you are departing, landing on etc. ( hpa in Canada) inches of mercury in the rest of North America ( the US). It is also neat to see the number of actual air fields in the UK ( actual grass fields) , we have mainly paved runways in the US and Canada. By the way I'm a big fan of your motorcycle reviews as well.

    Great video, as always! The mention of the Piper Cherokee really brought back memories. I used to enjoy flying a Cherokee in the late 1970s. Later on I flew the Piper Tomahawk, which I didn't care for much, as it had too many reliability issues (like the time the magneto failed on a short field takeoff, that sort of stuff). I still fondly remember my little 1966 Cessna 150, N3245J, my first airplane. Don't fly any more, rather I enjoy riding around on my BMW R1250GSA, which gives lots of thrills per adventure! Cheers!

As someone who works in the aviation industry, i can fully understand your decision to return to base, if the prop stops upon landing, and it`s getting worse, it`s not beyond the realms of reality, that the problem could manifest itself in flight. Yes Michael, the engine stopping at idle wasn’t ideal given I was planning a number of separate flights over water that weekend, I judged it safe enough to fly back to White Waltham where the field is large and I could’ve landed anyway had the engine stopped on approach once again. What you didn’t see on the video is the long conversation I had on the telephone with engineering at White Waltham. The problem only occurred at idle and the only time the aircraft is near idle is on the approach to land, I was happy to take the risk to land back at White Waltham knowing it is a big grass airfield that I could land in the middle of if required, however I wasn’t happy to fly the aircraft around Cornwall including long over sea sections. This was my logic and thinking. Thanks for watching and for stopping by.

I had my pilots license long before my motorcycle endorsement. I worked at two FBOs (Fixed Base Operation) when going to college. I racked my brain trying to remember seeing another aircraft with your issue. Alas nothing came out of my memory banks. Only thing that popped up in my mind was the mixture control in the carburetor was sticking. Even though you adjusted the mixture knob to full it was still running lean effectively starving the engine at the lower altitude. Other than that, another great video. Except now I have a craving for a big piece of cake. Until the next video have fun and stay safe. P.S. Mrs. Flyer appears to be a great co-pilot, always worth keeping around.

    Just a thing my last instructor said to me, as I am another baseball cap wearer. "Wear it backwards, because the rim in front could prevent or delay spotting another aircraft". I prefer not to be blinded by the sun though 😂
    Nice landing at EGHA 👍

    Any doubt = no doubt. Absolutley right when it come to flying. I had a dubious mag (missfiring on full power) when doing power checks in the chippy and made the call to return to the aircraft parking. It was one of those 'should I, shouldnt I?' moments, but made the call and returned. The maintenence guy found the fault and we had the mag replaced (the group had spares). I was quite supprised, however, that some people said they would have flown and just reported it in the log - err, really?? Take-offs are optional, landings are compulsory.

    Something compelling about the implicit jeopardy of light aeroplane flying and the detail of its management.

    I agree it could just be the idle setting, but it could also be a blocked/partial blocked pilot jet in the carb. Being the smallest jet, it will clog first and result in poor idling but no problems when on anything over 1/4 throttle as the main jet comes into play

      Yes I suspect you are right, the carburettor has now been sent for a refurb.

    A few years back I was on a 4 seater flying round Cable Mountain in Tasmania when the engined stalled, trying to restart whilst gliding. Thankfully it restarted and returned to the airfield for inspection. Turned out it had a blown head gasket. My cat of nine tails is running out

    You and Mrs Flyer were nearly right, Salisbury does in fact have the tallest cathedral spire in the Uk followed by St Paul’s in 2nd place, Liverpool in 3rd and Norwich in 4th……….every day is a school day.

    Hi Andy, I happen to share both your passions. I start to think Perranporth is jinxed. We had to leave a DV-20 behind there as one brake calliper fell apart during taxi. Ruined some of our weekend as well. 🙂 Keep up the sound decision making.

    Harley rider here. If it's cutting out once it's hot on a closed throttle, I'd first check the exhaust and inlet manifolds for air leaks. The heat causes expansion and contraction and over time the gaskets leak.

    • @nigelren3719
      @nigelren3719 2 года назад

      And of course the carbs and fuel filter, but because it's only doing it once it's hot I'd say its an air leak.
