    1. Trails of Cold Steel 3
    2. Fire Emblem Three Houses
    3. Dragon Star Varnir
    4. Death end reQuest
    5. Crystar
Idea Factory really impressed me this year with their games and I'm glad to see a sequel to Death end is in the works. I hold the Trails series very dear to my heart and 3 continues the trend of phenomenal games that Falcom continues to bring out. 4 might end up being my GoTY for 2020 if it comes out by then. Crystar I loved for the spectacular story, it was such a unique story and I loved the English dub so much. FE 3H, what else is there to say other than it was flat out amazing!

I just finished the main story of Atelier Ryza the other day. It was my first Atelier game and love the gameplay and currently trying to break the system of gem making to steamline 999 quality philosopher stones.
For those playing post game and are curious how I went about making the Gem farm...(spoiler-ish past read more)
-I farmed the Philluscia for their cores to make philosopher stones and slowly made high quality Red stones until it as 500+ in quality. I sold all of the philosopher stones I made up until this point. Then I kept the 500+ quality red stone on hold...
-Then I duped the 500+ red stone 9 times (10 total).
-Then I made the highest quality philosopher stone I could make several times with Best Quality attached to it, making it a 999 quality. I saved one 500+ red stone for later dupes.
-Then I used those 999 quality Philosopher Stones to make the highest quality Holy Drops I could make (around 700+) with all circles complete.
-Then I made the best Taboo Drops I could make with all circles complete.
-Then I duped both Holy Drops and Taboo Drops until I had about 28 of each.
-Then I duped the 500+ Red stone 9 more times (10 total again).
-Then I made the 999 quality red stones using a combination of 2 Holy Drops and Taboo Drops, one of which has the Best Quality trait attached to it. This will give you 3 Philosophers Stone that all sell for 70000 gems, netting 210,000 per round of 3 stones. Since I make it 9 times (thus why I made 27 of Holy and Taboo drops each along with the 9 red stones), that comes out to 1.89 million every round. After the cost of the dupes I still make over 1.2 million gems every round. At this point, I don't need to farm the Philuscia anymore. Just sit there and print gems.
That's where I'm at now, but I want to make OP armor and weapons once I make a perfect Philosopher stone for synthesizing with. That's where the gems I'm saving are going - to dupe the perfect Philosopher stone to make OP seeds and in turn, OP Armor and weapons. After that the extra gems are for enhancing those weapons and armor.

I didn't get a chance to play a lot of JRPGs this year, so I'm definitely making note to add these games to my queue to play at some point in the near future. Crystar really caught my attention and sounds very interesting. Apparently it completely flew under my radar as I hadn't heard of it until this video, but it definitely seems like something worth checking out.
I've also been interested in trying to get into the Atelier series recently, so it's reassuring to hear so many good things about Atelier Ryza. Whenever I looked into the series before, I had been kind of overwhelmed by just how many Atelier games are out there and didn't really know where to start, but it sounds like Ryza would be a good game to jump in with.
Three Houses was the only game on this list I played and I think it's a very solid choice. Definitely a positive step forward for the series with many improvements over past entries.
    Great list!!

I might switch #1 & #2, but really it depends on my mood which I would say is top of the year. So glad to see your love for Zanki Zero & Crystar, since a lot of people ignored or underrated them both this year... Also, as some comments have already suggested, honorable mention should go to Compile Heart's Death end re;Quest & Dragon Star Varnir, both of which tried something new and succeeded as fun games. As much as I enjoyed these 2019 games, though, 2020 looks like it could be a monster year for JRPGs. Where will I find the time to play all these games? Love your channel, keep up the good work!

I'm playing Ryza now - probably almost beat the story and I'm just taking a break since I gamed for like 12 hours straight lol - and it's definitely an amazing game. The characters and story and everything is really top-notch. I can't believe I have never heard of this series before. Final Fantasy and such has never quite been the same, but Ryza has me hooked in exactly the same ways Final Fantasy used to, back when it was actually good. I'm totally into the exploration, the crafting, learning about the various arcs (there's a lot of minor ones too). Everything feels so polished and meaningful.
Outside of jprgs, The Outer Worlds, Pokemon Shield, Luigi's Mansion 3, Super Mario Maker 2, Bloodstrained, Astral Chain, Slay the Spire, and Borderlands 3 were other games I really enjoyed, in no particular order.
I wish I had played Disco Elysium and A Plague Tale: Innocence.

My top would be a game that has been more regarded as a visual novel, Baldr Sky. It's definitely very story heavy compared to anything on this list, but it has more gameplay than something like Riviera: The Promised Land, and perhaps a bit less than the Xenosaga games. The story is exceptional and its real time action gameplay is robust in a way that series like Star Ocean or the Tales series aren't.
I'll likely try Atelier Ryza at some point, it looks really pretty, if a little generic, but I like the light hearted style it seems to be going for.

If you're including sub-genres like Tactical Games, than my JRPG of the year is easily the MMORPG Final Fantasy XIV: Shadowbringers. But if you aren't, it has to go to either Persona Q2 or Dragon Quest XI S: Definitive Edition.

Funny how people can be different, nowadays I only pick up games that have 100 hours worth of play minimum, didn't even buy Spider-Man yet cuz I saw it's a 30 hours platinum, but jumped on Tales of Berseria when it was on sale and the platinum is estimated at 200 hours. Right now I'm in the middle of the 4th Main mission of Assassins Creed Odyssey with 70 hours played already. I broken my rule by buying Resident Evil 2, but the replay value makes it close to 100 hours anyway.

      @JRPGJungle  4 года назад +2

Ryza is a great starting point! With Atelier you can start with any of the starts of the trilogies, so the Arland trilogy is good if you start from Rorona and the new Dusk trilogy rerelease is good if you start from Ayesha :) but Ryza is either standalone or a new trilogy and is the most polished Atelier still, so I'd highly recommend that one :)

    • @seanbcusack

they're not all on switch, but if you have ps4, the three "mysterious" games are lovely: sophie, firis, and lydie&suelle. while the plotline and characters in the dusk series are loosely connected, these three are more like one long, extended game. like the trails of cold steel series, plotlines that started in the first game carry over, and both plot progression and character development carry over little by little from game to game. by the time you finish lydie&suelle, there's an amazing amount of true, beautiful, heartfelt closure to an incredible series of events and characters. i dare anyone that plays all thee games to not cry repeatedly throughout lydie&suelle, both because of how deeply emotional the plot is itself, but also how stellarly they wrap up 3-game-long plot threads.
