Original Lp - Decca Records DL 4920 Mono
This album embodies the definition of a lost gem quite literally. With all the amazingly forward thinking and iconic music that was occurring in 1967, it’s no wonder that you would still get a genius album out of ten lost in the shuffle.
It makes perfect sense that this album released in the midst of the psychedelic insanity of ’67, it tastes and sounds like it, although it stands firmly on both feet because of the wonderfully crafted arrangements and bizarre melodies the songs carry. It sounds as dirty as Pink Floyd’s debut, yet can sound so charming like a late 60s Beach Boys album.
There are many songs here which I could easily place on the Beach Boys’ Smiley Smile album or something of theirs around that late 60s period. There’s something powerful in the way a song like ‘Daffodil Days’ can sound so immensely haunting but still so beautiful and innocent, and carefree… it’s really beautiful. Many songs on here tug you in different directions as you listen closely, they are so full of life and wonder.
The only thing that can set this apart from the top albums of this year would be the production, but who cares when it all sounds so gorgeous in the end anyway. This is an album for all lovers of 60s psychedelia and ridiculously catchy sunshine pop tunes. (Yugiaru RYM)
