  • Guildford Cathedral Choir, directed by Barry Rose:
Evensong at Guildford Cathedral, 17 July 1968:
(From a live BBC radio broadcast. Thought to have been composed in the 1560s while Byrd was Organist at Lincoln Cathedral)
My soul doth magnify the Lord, and my spirit hath rejoiced in God my Saviour.
For he hath regarded the lowliness of his handmaiden.
For behold, from henceforth all generations shall call me blessed.
For he that is mighty hath magnified me, and holy is his Name.
And his mercy is on them that fear him, throughout all generations.
He hath shewed strength with his arm: he hath scattered the proud in the imagination of their hearts.
He hath put down the mighty from their seat, and hath exalted the humble and meek.
He hath filled the hungry with good things, and the rich he hath sent empty away.
He remembering his mercy hath holpen his servant Israel, as he promised to our forefathers, Abraham and his seed for ever.
    GLORIA

We suspect, judging from way the soloists are so closely miked, that this may have been a live BBC broadcast as part of the "Choral Evensong" series.

I would not be surprised. This young treble evidenced I think. The tradition of a evensong.

Although it's alarming to reflect that the "young treble" concerned is in his fifties now...

Absolutly. The voice of a boy is like the seasons go by.

***** The BBC Radio Times archive site confirms that this was, indeed, part of "Choral Evensong"

I'm not surprised once. When we think of all these archives have BBC.

this is the second solo I wanted to do after Ireland in F, once I did it I never wanted to do it again!

Bigbearbeau you never asked me what my first one was...anyway this is a mixture of intense anger and softness and the end!

Bigbearbeau You're right - we didn't. So what was your first choice solo? Stanford in G? Allegri Miserere? Pie Jesu?

no, no, and again no! It was the little trio from Ireland in F "and his mercy"...I was a teenage alto at the time..SAD BUT TRUE! although I'll never sing again it would be a close second to Vivaldi's Nisi Dominus, the cantata that slipped through my fingers!
