    From New Zealand.The unmanned Mk-II Aurora prototype reached a speed of Mach 1.1 becoming the first civilian aircraft to break the sound barrier since the Concorde.
    The flight test took place near Mount Cook, in New Zealand’s South Island, with the aircraft reaching an altitude of 82,500 ft (25.14 km).
    The Mk-II Aurora also set another record during its ascent, becoming the fastest aircraft to climb from the ground up to an altitude of 20km. It took 118.6 seconds for the Mk-II Aurora to reach this altitude, which is 4.2 seconds faster than the previous record holder, a modified F-15 fighter jet, in the 1970s.

    The problem with cost is do to the lack of fixed price contracts. Cost overruns need to be on the manufacturer. BTW-Maybe if the Military Contractors spent less money on lobbyists and executive management, and more on building aircraft they would be able to build weapons systems that were less expensive.

    • @mutteringmale
      @mutteringmale Месяц назад +1

      Add to that the lifer corrupt generals in the pentagon who approve all these cost over runs, no-big-contracts and such and get paid off/rewarded when they retire as "consultants" to these very same companies.
      If I had the approval power for example, to award contracts for paving a 1 block long street in my city, it was cost 20 million, take 6 years and afterwards that paving company would hire me as a "Government Affairs Consultant" and pay me 995,000 each year for 3 years. Then I would go next door to the next 4 or 5 other companies I wrangled as a government employee and collect my checks from them too.

      If we burdened the companies with the cost overruns they would all shutdown. There is a problem with underbidding on contracts but this just isn’t the solution. Military projects are soo unbelievably expensive these companies would simply shut down if they had to bear the cost.

    How things have changed. Back in 1990 Bert Rutan / Scaled Composites made the Ares fighter jet to compete for military contract. While the Ares did everything and more required by the contract, Rutan was said to not win the contract because it cost less than $100k per jet. The military needed to spend millions per jet or they could risk a budget reduction.

    We need an affordable fighter because if we ever enter a war an attrition rates are high, I don't think we're going to be ever to replace FA/18s by the thousands. But I do believe we should make them into drones. Unless the cheap aircraft have most of the survivable aspects a normal aircraft has. I've always thought about how fast we pushed jets out in WW2 and wondered how that could be replicated in the next war if our jets take so long to make these days and have price overuns into the millions, sometimes even billions. We can't make tens of thousands of F35s. If we can, I stand corrected. The same line of thinking goes towards ships. We need more drone ships that have fire mission capabilities to strike the enemy hard.

      @@oxcart4172 Well the key point is it will be the most expensive, as that 2ish Trillion is over 50-60 years, It is not that we have spent 2 trillion already. Also this value is actually expressed in Then year numbers or a projected USD value in 2060 not todays current USD value. (in other words this is taking inflation into account!)
      However it is affordable, Current FA-18s, F-16s and F-15s built to current specs are not that much cheaper or are more expensive and have far less options or capabilities. Based on their current costs Three F-16s will not win a fight with two F-35s out side of very situational encounters.
      Even so do you think three individual programs would of been cheaper over all? After all this is a large program involving the development of three different configurations, over 3000 aircraft to be built and maintained spread over a lifetime of some 60+ years, it was not going to be cheap regardless. Going with three different programs would not have been cheaper in the long run, though one could argue how much did we save...
      Heh I would not be surprised if using todays money if one did the total lifetime costs of the F-15, 16 & 18 aircraft programs that the costs would be well over a trillion as well (never mind A-10 and AV-8 aircraft as well). No other aircraft has ever had its total life time costs estimated before.

The Ukrainians ought to try a few NOW for they have the GUTS and Creative Ability PLUS/BECAUSE of the suffering they have had when they had hardly nothing to fight with ! In war, many times when things look bleak , creative normal day men have come up on HOW to get it done ! Ike said it, not me , but I agree ! Or, was it Audie Murphy ? No, it was Ike !

    Truly AUTONOMOUS operations would mean NO position updates relying on GPS or data coming from an outside information source. Truly AUTONOMOUS operations would be self-contained and therefore impervious to hacking. Updates to positions could be via tracking via optical means, star navigation or optical updates relying on known geographical points that are fixed and unmovable or susceptible to faking or disguise.

      @HenryKlausEsq. Месяц назад +5

      Pilots are most certainly not a dime a dozen. They're the most valuable component in the chain because they take years to train. You can build a replacement jet, while it takes years to train a competent pilot.

      It takes a f$ck load of time and money to train fighter pilots. All the forces are having a hard time finding recruits. Geeze, just look at the state of kids leaving college. Half of them don’t know if they’re a boy or a girl.

    For a long time the pilot has been the weak point in airplane manoeuvrability. They can pull more Gs than a pilot can stand. So even an old F16 could theoretically outperform any fighter if there was no one on board.

      Maybe one day when you are older you will understand a countries influence in the world is directly tied to its military capabilities. It’s something maga just doesn’t get. The US cannot keep its standing in the world theater while becoming a hermit isolationist country.
