Hi! After sitting on the sidelines for a long time, I recnetly decided to get back into a similar era retro PC myself. I found your website with so many useful bits of software (I came for the Intel INF files, stayed for the... lots of other things). So just wanted to say thank you for what you're doing!
simply the best retro gaming channel on youtube.
Se esse cara não faz mais videos temos que forçá-lo
I agree
By far...
@ , tamo junto!
Instant classic! 🤠
Make sure that if you get a workstation graphics card that you get an AGP card not an AGP Pro one, the difference is that AGP pro has an extended slot that provides extra power so workstation graphics cards using it don't need a molex connector for power. They will not properly fit in a standard slot and can get stuck halfway, causing a short.
+Yukari Yakumo Good point!
I never expected Yukari to be a retro PC nerd.
In the past month I've watched nearly all your videos, they're really good. Even though you're only at 34k Subs you deserve more like 200k with the quality and time you put into these videos.
Thank you!
And this 6 year old build would be a beast of an add on to the #slot1buildoff collaboration!
Lovely! I have a similar slot 1 1GHz system. I used it for DOS 6.22/Win 3.11, DOS 7.10/Win 98 and Win XP (I open a door and switch some connections to make that happen). I love it! Good work Phil! =)
Thank you! Slot 1 at 1 GHz is such a useful machine. I like the idea with the switch.
This video made me remember the old days when I used to make some tests with my PIII 1ghz PC bought in March 2000! So I stood up from a chair and went to my basement and guess what - I found it proudly standing on a shelf. I definitely need to check it :) Thanks Phil!!!
Nice :D
Dude you are awesome.. made me go through my old stuff and build a retro PC... keep it up!
+eukat3ch Thank you :)
Christ.... this brings back memories. A lot of them painfully annoying but memories nonetheless!
This is literally my go to guy for all of my retro pc needs! Very detailed info!
Believe it or not. But I've found today a complete case with inside a slot 1 p3 550 with a matrox 8 mb:D
Good, that's how it should be :)
:)
Martijn van Zanen I just went into my garage and I had a P3 slot one and some P2 slot 1 cpu's and a few socket 7 boards, think im gonna run all my old software with it.
That awesome:D it be fun:)
Our old p3 back than died of Heat. Wals also a 550. But under the roof it was pretty tough for it
I found an ASUS machine in a neighbor’s trash. All it needed was a new power supply and replacement RAM which was blown. I replaced them and everything worked fine. Jammed in new 16 GB RAM for $36 and it works fine. Turned it into an awesome server for under $100.
One man's trash is another man's treasure 🙂
I had this exact motherboard in 2000. It's funny every retro PC I go to build, you seem to have already built and benchmarked it 💪 I'm currently working on an Axper Socket 462, exact same board you happened to find new 😂
Congrats on 5000 subs :)
+LBX Computer Services Thank you!
Love this video. Great idea to benchmark at the same time!
Of all the computers I've had over the years. Pentium, P2, P3, Athlon XP, Core 2 Duo, A8, 8700, 10750, 13700, just to name a few that I can remember lol. Of all of those, while the later CPUs are so much more powerful. In my mind atleast, the Pentium 3 (733) unit that I had just felt so snappy at the time. I remember not thinking much about the P3 series when it released. But it went on to become one of my favorites. Seems to get more forgotten about than the other Pentiums. Cheers! Great vid!
Cool :) my childhood PC I played on has a Pentium III and used to run Windows 2000 im hoping to get it from my folks since they dont use it
Can you write a full parts list?
Have you tried to use a small SSD (around 60GB) as a system disk? I saw a video, in which one guy used 60GB SSD in SLOT1 system with Windows 98, it ran really fast
Slava A Yes, I did! It worked fine, but I found little performance difference compared to the SATA III drive. The processors in these machines are simply too slow to make a difference. Windows 98 boot times also did not really improve, likely also to do with a processor.
It might make a difference on a Pentium 4 3.4 GHz Windows 98 monster, but I never tried that yet LOL
just got a pentium 3 450mhz slot thing! it has 512mb ram some motherboard and a pci video card. i didnt know they sold those
The Pentium III was my first and last overclocked CPU. Changed FSB from 100 to 130. I’d pay $2000 to get my system incl. my 19” Belinea CRT monior back. Luckily I was smart enough to save my Asus V6800 graphics card
If I'm not mistaken the 1.1 GHz Pentium III was discontinued because of stability or cooling issue, but the Taulatin had a 1.1 GHz. However, the Tualatin required an 815 chipset motherboard board or a Powerleap PLITP3 or whatever slot to socket adapter and using the Celeron Tualatin was better to use in a socket 370 motherboard with only official 100 Mhz FSB (Front SIde Bus) Speed because the Pentium III Tualatin was a lot more expensive and it wouldn't clock as high as the Celeron Tualatin in systems with only officially supported 100 MHz FSB speeds due to the multiplier. I prefer intel network cards too because they currently have the best driver support. Also look into the early ATI Radeon X1000's or x2000 graphics cards or an Nivdia 7800 GS graphics card. For sound look for a sound blaster Audigy 2 ZS or X-Fi PCI.
Nice video. Always get into the old nostalgia mode & want build something similar. Then again i recall buiding my second 486 back in those days & the nightmare i had back then figuring out the right dma's & irq's & in the end had to beg a shop to sell me some jumpers as the hardware i bought had been stingy on jumpers & i couldnt get my setup without it. Some guy thankfully too pity on me & sold me 20 jumpers.
Resently got a old P 300 mhz laptop fairly cheap off ebay to keep my old Dos to win 98 cravings in check for now :D
Ah the jumpers, yes, if you don't the manual for a 486 you're in trouble :D
Really interesting, thinking of building my own retro pc. Already have a really good modern gaming pc, but I love old tech. How many retro builds have you completed?
***** Too many to count :) I don't keep em around forever though. After a while I take them apart and the parts go back in storage containers. Then I'm off onto the next project :)
Hey u can use VIA ide/sata combo pci card with this mobo.it's support boot disk. and also have Win9x compatible drivers.
Hey Phil you should make a whole video on the socket 370 to slot 1 adapters it's very confusing on the jumpers and also what adapter you need for 1ghz
I only have a very simple coppermine adapter. There is not much to it and not sure how to fill a video :) They are also a bit harder to find.
i would have liked this too :P I bought a GA-6R7 and SL5QV to go with my GA-6BXC and it does not work :( I found a german site saying that i had to solder two PINS: "For a Coppermine to work, RESET (AH4) must be connected to RESET2 (X4)". The motherboard now post but its not stable at all. I've looked to buy another adapter and from what i understood, the option are powerleap and upgradeware. But those thing are price as hell. I found other adapter like Asus and MSI but theirs no info proving that those will work.
okay so just bought an ASUS S370-133 an it won't post :( If you could give some advice! I will buy a 370 motherboard i think
If you wanted to run the older Seirra and Lucas Arts games, would a sound blaster 16 ISA work in place of the PCI sound card? Looking to get into DOS/Win98 gaming for the first time, your videos have been a great help.l
Kristopher Tadlock In fact an ISA card is much better for DOS. And it works under Windows as well. So the ISA card is more DOS and a bit of Window, whereas the PC is Windows with a bit of DOS.
Hi Phil. I have a question about the graphics card. What is the modell because i wanna buy a really good agp4x card for my Dell precision 340. This is a pc home 2001. What video card do you prefer for this area. Thanks for the answer.
can you make a list of good games for dos and windows 98?
I still have a p3 1.3ghz still in a server
Love the video but somehow I can't move my nostalgia past the 386DX-40 which is weird because I'm more of a pentium-era child
Can you try a dual PIIIS Tualatin at 1.47ghz+ 2gb ram+ HD4870 ? i think is the maximum you can get with a P3.
I don't have such gear to test!
Im building a slot 1 pentium 3 500mhz PC.. But the vcore is at 3.4v(!).. Heatsink is getting really hot fast, but the machine boots, and i can get into the bios. Motherboard is an Asus p2b. Any thoughts? So little info about this around, but i think it may be the cpu.. Hmm. Anyways thanks for all the great content. Inspired me to build several different windows 98 and xp retro machines!
watching this videos makes me really wish I didn't show out all those old P3's I thought had become useless.... Damn
Great video. As always. I have a similar setup for my retro gaming. Hey Phil, would you consider doing a video about settng the BIOS?
Jose Luis Rojas I usually load BIOS defaults, disable serial and parallel, maybe check the RAM timings and boot order. Nothing fancy.
I got a PIII 450 MHz with a Voodoo Banshee and 256MB of RAM. I'm thinking of getting a 1GHz PIII with a Slot 1 adapter (About 35€) but I dunno what to get for a GPU. I don't wanna spend too much. The Voodoo Banshee isn't that bat but for 1999/2000 games doesn't work that well...
Hallo Phil, I just built a retro Pc with a Pentium 3 800EB, 256 sdram 133, Voodoo 3 and a 80GB IDE HDD. Everything works fine but after Windows copyies the files on the HDD and the pc restarts I get the error "error loading operating system". The motherboard is a ODI Via 133A Pro with a bios alomost identical to the one in this video you made. For 2 days I tried everthing possble but I still get the same error message. Could it be that the HDD is too big and the bios of the motherboard to old to work with it ?
The motherbord works only with maximum 60 gb HDD. Problem solved.
it's cool really really cool, im sorry i have some questions, the sound card is for pci slot right?
+cobeto Yes.
+PhilsComputerLab i mean not for pcie but for pci 1x, short in the front n long in the back
No it's not PCIe, standard PCI.
+PhilsComputerLab i have pc server Acer Altos G330 Mk2, I'm lookin sound card that compatible for my pc but I don't know which one
Hello thank you so much for all this interesting stuff. But i have on Question i dont understand... I have some Mainboard... and i see the max CPU clock ratio is 8, so i thought max CPU can be 800 MHz...I dont understand why an 1.1 Ghz CPU can work? Or i think something wrong?
Afaik the CPU multiplier with these newer CPUs is locked and provided by the processor and not by the motherboard.
thank you so much
Why did you change dma for the soundcard from 3 to 1? Great videos btw, love it, keep it up! :-)
Kristoffer Trolle The standard Sound Blaster was configured at address 220, interrupt 7 or 5 and DMA 1. So I always make sure it's configured at this default to avoid issues. You're right though, most games will work with DMA 3, but it's just something that annoys me a bit, so I change it LOL
My P3 is nearly identical to this build. It have the same CPU and adapter, sound card and GPU. It works great for those DOS and Win98 3D games. It's making me neglect my Pentium 90 and 486 machines, though.
Yes! Helios is mine! I will be the one to merge! The one to see and know
everything, to rule, to rule everything..
Quick question. I'm looking at upgrades for my Slot 1 P3 Dell OEM motherboard. Looks like the AGP is 1x/2x compatible and it has a Riva TNT2 M64 in there (looks to be a 2x/4x card). What is the beefiest GPU I can use for that slot? I didn't know you could go to GeForce 5000 equivalent GPU's on 1x/2x, assuming this board is like mine. Am I limited to Geforce 2, 3, 4? FX 5000 series? Any handy resources for finding out? Or just look for a 3-notch AGP card and if it fits, it works? Love the channel, thanks!
I would recommend a GeForce 2 GTS or GeForce 3 card for such a system.
PhilsComputerLab I'm extremely glad you said this because I have a GeForce 2 GTS on order as we speak! Did probably three hours of research between ATI and Nvidia to find that one!
Yes it's a great retro card. There will be a video tomorrow, you should find it very interesting!
PhilsComputerLab Also, do you have any advice about getting games to work in 98SE? Civ 3, Diablo 1 and 2, And Descent Freespace all bomb out while playing or fail to start. Only Quake 2 works. Should I consider an upgrade to XP or can 98SE easily handle these games and perhaps I have a hardware problem? I DO have the original, 2000 era PSU.....
Not sure about games, they should say what operating system is supported. I like to use 98 because of DOS, but if you're just into Windows, you can give XP a try, more games will work without fuss.
Hi Phil!
Very concise and clear videos. Congrats!
May I kindly ask : Looking for *fast*, why go for a Slot 1 based machine, instead of a Athlon XP or P4 based system ?
Dofus Schmuck Good question! I've had V2 SLI in a P4 3.2 GHz and that worked fine :) With V3 you need to be careful, newer boards usually do not support AGP 3.3V standard. But other cards, like from Nvidia, will work fine.
P4 and Athlon you can get a slow chip, and it should perform on the level of a fast Pentium III. So yea, no good reason not use Athlon or P4. You could get SATA controller as well, USB 2.0 and onboard Ethernet. So lots of benefits :)
Are you thinking of building one?
philscomputerlab For retro DOS games with ISA hardware, I have 2 super socket 7 rigs and 2 Athlon XP rigs. I had a P3 for games I thought wouldn't run on a Athlon XP but I quickly found out there isn't one game I throwed at the Athlon XP that it couldn't run.
Dofus Schmuck That's excellent!
thanks a lot, I'm looking for good retro hard but in muy counntry it's very difficult, now I have a better idea what to search. Cheers
***** Great that you found it useful :)
Phil PLEASE not an FX5800 with a Pentium III...
When I was younger I acquired 3 of these huge DELL Optiplex server machines with dual Pentium III Slot 1 550Mhz CPU's. The cases were amazing to work with and opened out like a fridge door. They came with Viper 770 TNT2 Ultras (?) in the AGP slots, and they ran like a dream under Windows 2000.
I gave one to my brother, sold one and kept one which I upgraded to dual Pentium III 700Mhz CPU's, boosted the RAM to 512MB and used a Geforce 2 GTS with two VooDoo 2's in SLI.
I loved that PC. It was kept for a very long time, until I finally had to let it go because it was taking up too much space. I recently saw one on eBay in amazing condition and almost bought it as a nostalgia project but the guy wanted £120 for it and refused to drop his price. The shipping was £30, and I figured it was all too much to pay for me.
+TheVanillatech I like to mix it up in my videos, use different parts. Here I wanted to use a Nvidia Quadro to show that you can use workstation cards.
That machine sounds like a beast - I'm looking into building a retro pc, any chance you could list all the specs for something like what you mentioned above? Also, would it run late 90's early 2000 games and DOS? Thanks
Just curious, my P3 board is an Intel SE440BX-2 with a built-in YMF-741. As great as the Vortex2 cards are, can I remove my Montego II for now? (I know a few of my games do support Sensaura, which the DS-XG seems to support.)
This is pretty good. I have a Slot 1 motherboard with a Pentium 3 in it. I dunno what speed since I haven't powered it up yet.
Hi! Can you tell me about the video capture organizing of your video? Its so good quality!
Those times I put Tualatin in Abit Bx chipset board. I modified cheap socket370 => slot 1 adapter, studying Intel data sheets and similar conversion projects. I also made tutorial how to modify such adapter, my unique way. Also BIOS mod was needed, new microcodes, at least for Windows XP. in the end I didn't used it for a long time, because I wanted overclocking and bx chipset OC with FSB over 100 MHz was not best because of Agp bus speed. But it was funny to have 1.4GHz cpu in a motherboard which I bought for Celeron 300A :) Motherboard even had Ultra Ata 66 on board, but quite a shitty one.
Does a VIA or Intel chipset make a difference? I'm going for a Win98 PC with the ability to run DOS and 3Dfx
I prefer Intel, it's more robust.
hi man, great job doing these things, but i have a multi $ question. I don.t know much things about the networking but, is there a way, somehow, over the internet to connect 2 or more retro pc.s or laptops to play old games, like in a network? thx.
I recently got my hands on a Soltek SL-65KV2-CT motherboard with 768MBs PC133 RAM and a Pentium III 1GHz (133MHz FSB). I'm planning on testing a GT 610 PCI on that baby. I need to get 512MB modules to achieve maximum RAM (1.5GB).
Phil did you know these batteries can be recharged? You have to use very low apmerage though, 50mA max, 20mA ideal. And i always use my multimeter to check their charge because even 10yr battery can be still fine
Pentium III on 1100Mhz?
I`m the only one who ask Where did you get it?
The best one i had was 800Mhz.
i have a pentium 2 and 3 Sony Vaio.
i kept them because its much easier then a desktop.
Do you use S-video capture or you downscale and convert it to capture the signal?
+Hunitos I'm using a socket 370 to Slot 1 adapter for this build! A regular Slot 1 CPU, the fastest goes to 1 GHz I believe. I just captured the DVI output.
Alright! Dvi its much easier. It's already digital signal. It works with every capture cars.
I did manage once to capture vga with a pci capture card but I had to convert the signal to digital from vga.
The only reason it work is that the capture card was able to go down to 30hz and manage to receive the signal.
And about that p3. Do you know the equivalence from AMD ? I really hate it but it was on the market and made a good cheap point vs Intel CPU systems. DURON
Ohhh the days. It feels good and bad at the same time.
Age of empires and StarCraft LAN party.
Everybody was bringing his own system and showing off with his mods and twicks.
I fraking cheated everytime.
Last party that happen I went with 3dfx Voodoo 3 and a SiS card.
2.1gb Bigfoot hdd 5.25" Hahhahahaa
Good memories :)
Personally I have nothing AMD from that era. Only later gear with the Athlon XP.
I haven't built a DOS PC since the early 90's. I'm in the process of rebuilding with a Slot 1 Motherboard and my CPU is in. But I cannot find a power socket for the CPU? Or does it not need it? Sorry it might sound silly but it has been a while! I have the 20pin ATX, RAM, IDE sockets etc, but cannot find the CPU one, if it needs it.
What do you mean with power socket? The 4 pin plug? If that's the question, then no, these Slot 1 machines don't use it, just the regular ATX.
PhilsComputerLab
Yeah the 4 pin plug sorry, quite tired. and thanks.
I been looking around for a good video on explanation of IDE auto detection and specifically explaining the Options 2(y) / 1 / 3 , what to to press to select those options, and why choose one over the other.. Any chance you have a video of that ? if not any chance of making a video about that
Old fan favorite, the SLOT1 platform, my ideal setup would be... P3 500mhz, 256mb pc133, Voodoo3 2000 agp, vortex2 pci soundcard and a 8.4gb pata hdd for some good old fashioned back in time WIN98se gaming.
This is my build xD haha but got 32 gb flash drive and 128 megs of ram enough i think 256 or more go for xp.
Is there an rule to always reset bios/jumpersetting when attempting to plug in slotket with for example Celeron CPU?
In my case, i am using P3B-F and have plugged in Celeron SL5XU 1100mhz which is max supported on this card Rev 1.04. I got black screen, and bios not shows up.
Voltage is set correctly on the slotket.
Do you have any relevant experience you would like to share?
Hi Phil, what's the black box between your VGA and monitor cables?
Really nice video.
Mauro
Mauro Addona Hi! What time into the video? I've got a lot of black boxes :)
philscomputerlab Hi, at 10:59 on the right, the one with blue led:)
byz
Ah, that's a StarTech EDID Emulator. I did a review: ruclips.net/video/AlgIRVJRbN0/видео.html
It basically tells the graphics card to output at a set resolution. Great for capturing.
philscomputerlab Ah thanks, I thought it was a video scaler or something like that.
But can it run Crysis?
+DigitalXing With nvidia quadro? Lol! Can't of course!
+Target Stojar The joke clearly went over your head. :-)
+OldPix3l Yup.
Never had a slot 1 pc but i've always wanted one
Yea they are getting harder to find these days. Also check out the slightly newer Socket A stuff, they perform very similar to the Pentium III.
Just had a look and I have a compaq dual slot1 with a P3 866 (only1) and 1gb of RDRAM, its got onboard scsi 4PCI 1 AGP. It would make a good slot 1 machine
DUAL CPU is not supported under win98 :(
I'm building a similar project like you, running windows 98 SE. I'm also planning to create network sharing between this computer and my others that run windows 7, is that possible?
Yes that's no problem at all! You might have to open up the security for your network though (public sharing) for this to work.
PhilsComputerLab Excellent, thank you!
I miss good old full pc builds videos
I don't. Pain in the neck to store all the cases and boxes.
I recently got a slot 1 computer, It didnt work, so I replaced the fuse in the power supply, IT WORKED!! for 3 seconds before the psu detonated.... any idea where I can get a new psu for a gateway e3200??
what do you think of windows 95 the later version was fat32 and had usb support (limited but still good) last time I ran it, it was on a 550mhz amd k6 and was lightning fast but that was years ago.
Not much to be honest, I always go with 98 SE.
Wouldnt be better to use an IDE to CF adapter and go with a compactflash?
Hello there, I am planning on building an old workstation to simulate working in 3D modeling/animation at a time when I knew that it was a career path I would like to follow as a preteen (around 2000) and was wondering if you could give some input. I do not want to skimp out on the graphics so I am looking at a hypothetical scenario where you invested on Dual Pentium III 1GHZ Slot 1 processors, 1GB of RAM, and wanted to take advantage of the latest AGP pro graphics a few years later so I am eying a Quadro FX3000 card. What motherboard would you recommend that would be able to solidly support this configuration as most of the motherboards I have found do not support a jumper configuration for anything above 600MHZ? Why duel slot 1? For the novelty of course!
Additionally I keep finding "matched pairs" online but they all have what looks like passively cooled heat-sinks. If this is the case then are they designed like a modern Tesla card and thus require a server chassis to move air efficiently over them or would what you would normally find in a PC do? Especially when running at 100% for hours at a time.
Lastly, would such a configuration create extra hassle or steps for a duel boot of Windows 98 SE/XP?
As you can see, I obviously have little idea as to what I am doing as I have never really built a computer with hardware older than 2008 (when I built my first pc FTW!) and any input you could give would be absolutely welcome.
P.S. You were not lying when you mentioned the premium that people are charging for old cards. I was originally considering flashing an AGP Geforce 6800 Ultra into an FX 4000 (which would actually allow it to outperform the latter!) but I cannot find any for a reasonable price, 150-200 dollars? Come on!
Everything I do on this channel has to do with Gaming, your projects is totally off topic :D
I understand that but I will be using roughly the same parts like the slot 1 Pentium III but two of them. Like, I do not want/need help with the flashing BIOS thing with the 6800 if I accidentally implied such. More like being fundamentally unfamiliar with pre SATA/PCIe/LGA hardware, its compatibilities (or lack thereof), and potential nuances of the era when it came to PC hardware that no longer exist (flipping playing with jumpers to configure your CPU) and thus are often overlooked by newbies like me.
+Ultra Indigo When running AGP PRO graphics card be sure to have a psu with a strong 5v rail.
Antwan Armstrong I will keep that in mind, thanks for the heads up.
I have that exact sound card sitting next to me now....
I was putting together a Windows 98 pc consisting of an MSI MS-7021 Socket A, AMD Athlon 3000+, 512mb DDR 333mhz, soundblaster pci128, and the GPU was a Radeon 9800 Pro 256mb however I could not get the card go output a decent picture unless I held it at a weird angle, so instead I stuck in an extra gb of ram and threw windows xp on it, and swapped the PCI 128 with an Audigy 2 to use it for AGP graphics card benchmarking instead.
Sweet 🥲
The ASUSTECH P2B-B is also a slot one motherboard and ATI AIO graphics card might be in order which gives you TV and DVD playback with hardware acceleration, XP is a no no as are the other Windows OS's so I think UBUNTU 12.04LTS might be good and virus resistant, the Eurofighter EF2000 simulator by DID software doesn't work well runs very slowly with Intel Celeron, ClamTK together with FreshClam would be a good Opensource and free Anti-Virus software which is an on demand virus scanner.
please make one video if i have usb bootable pendrive i have use BR Automation pc if have damaged pc so how to i use gigabyte ddr3 motherboard this pen drive need to run that time this one msg came so what can i do ? & give me some suggestion
1.The system may not support the PCI bus
2.The PCI adapter may not be properly installed in a slot
3. Some of the PCI adapter resources in configuration space may be invalid
At 21:03 when you played Duke 3D, the FM Synthesis sounds slightly higher in pitch than the original. Is that just me or is it happening in reality?
+F_A_B123 It is a PCI card, maybe that's why?
On other sound cards that I have on PCI in MS-DOS, the Software FM Synthesis remains the original pitch. How can that happen with your PCI card?
I don't know.
I am all for this and think it is awesome! But I do wonder, are there any benefits to building a whole machine vs a Virtual Machine?
It works? :D
Virtual Machines do not work for games? I am going to create a 98 VM and test. Been wanting to plat Lords of the Realm II lately anyways!
I've heard mixed reports. So I'm keen to see how you go.
Will report momentarily. Windows 98 install nearly done!
Phil, can you post the parts list in the description , really like that when i can look in the descrip and go search for those parts to use
this would include the board rev. thats important i think
I have the Aopen AX63 pro, getting lockups in dos games. It's weird I can't figure out why. I have tried different sound cards even ISA (AWE 64) No conflicts nothing. I have a socket 370 adapter with a 733mhz coppermine in it, board recognizes the cpu fine. Power supply is new, it's a coolermaster RP-500-PCAR 500w it even has -5v and -12v. I'm thinking maybe it could just be the AGP buss. It's picky, geforce 2, no post, geforce FX 5600 posts, ATI 7500 posts, TNT 2 M64 no post, 3dfx Banshee posts. I do have a few more tricks to try, I do have a 80gb hdd, what is in it now is a sata to IDE, wonder if maybe that could be tripping out, I also have a PII to toss in and will also try my PCI tnt 2 m64 and see. I'll update if I find out what so that if anyone else has this board and runs into similar problems a possible solution will exist.
i have an old dell optiplex gx1 that i can refurbish would it be worth it?
*****
no intention on selling it so cost vs value means nothing to me
That is a cool computer.
DAMN THAT'S OLD!
Please don't say that. Some of us administered networks of those things.
Does Service Pack 3 have usb drivers?
I don't think so, I always use this driver: www.philscomputerlab.com/usb-storage-driver.html
It doesn't need any service pack. Should work on anything with USB, Socket 7, Slot 1...
@@philscomputerlab Mr Retro freak, would you mind to update the link maybe? :D I think I need this!
Hey Phil, I'm still working on my fast pIII windows 98 build, right now I have a 650mhz p3 running at 866mhz at 133fsb, 512mb of ram and a fx5700ve, I'm not getting high fps in quake 3 arena, sometimes it hits around 150fps but the average is like 67fps at 1024x768, I'm using an asus p3v4x with agp 4x enabled, should I look for another graphics card that would be better suited for this system? Would a geforce3 ti200 or a geforce4 ti4200 yield higher fps in quake 3?
lilkuz2005 bench at a range of resolutions from 320x240 to whatever the highest is. That will tell us I'd you're CPU or GPU bottlenecked. I think it's the CPU, but best to get some data.
lilkuz2005 FX5700LE? Hmm on second thought...
PhilsComputerLab it's a PNY geforce fx5700ve 256mb, no extra power needed, I thought it would run well with the p3, I have a 1000mhz slot 1 p3 133fsb coming in the mail, I don't think it's going to make much difference in performance but it will at least be a stock clock and not an overclock
lilkuz2005 Please do those benchmark runs at different resolutions, then we know more.
PhilsComputerLab I will run the benchmarks as soon as I get home, should I test quake 3 all resolutions at 866mhz and then do it all again with the 100mhz fsb 650mhz?
what power supply did you use in this project?
Check the video. It's many years old so if it's not shown in the video then no idea 🙂
Is it necessary to connect the small pin audio cable from your CD optical drive to the motherboard or is only the ide cable plus power needed for 98 games? Using or isa soundblaster 16 card plus a vortex 2 pci card
Without that cable you won't hear any CD Music!
@@philscomputerlab ok cool. I'm assuming that cable comes with most new optical drives
Phli, any chance to get a decent PIII slot one with a Compaq Deskpro 2000, I believe they wnt up to 550 on slot 1. It a very reliable HW that stand XP very good. Wondering you opinion of this corporate type of computers. Another computer I love is the Vectra VL, PIII 850 and 1000. Ar this worth for any project. The Compaq come with 64MB AGP video, stock (a TNT ?). Vectra VL is on board video and not sure if any AGP is available. I already have a Vectra P1 for Win98SE applications. Its ia 166MMX expanded to 96MB the RAM which is decent for 98 SE and added a five USB card with NEC chipset that works like a champ. also bought a ide to sata converter with marvell chipset. Works like a champ but the IDE is PIO4 ans so slow that couldnt get an advantage. I even atached an SSD LOL.
They sound like cool machines. Not familiar with them, I mostly build custom machines.
What is the best graphics card for retro gaming for Pentium 4?
Can Half Life CS 1.6 or Source go on it? Or even Half Life?
Kirill Marine yes it can
not source tho
this computer is better than mine
I am running a Socket 370 P3 933
512mb of ram
Radeon X800SE 256mb
Seagate Cheetah SCSI drives, 15K RPM
Intel MB
Win XP Pro
550W PSU
Works great for older games and is very fast.
Nice, especially the hard drive. Would make a bit of noise though?
Yeah, you can hear them. :)
i have a slot 1 pIII system aswell, i downgraded it to a 266Mhz Deschutes PII (Jan 1998) should have gone for a Klamath 233 to make it more mid 90s (spring 1996)
I found a Dual P2 333MHz Slot1 (BX) PC in the "Room of Requirement" ;)
I didn't knew about that unofficial service pack. But it seems to work only in English versions of 98. What exactly happens if I install in another version than English? I'm a noob when it comes to OS's.
No idea, you got to just try it out and see what happens?
Okay, will try on my VM and I'll report if there's any issues.
Parts of your OS will become English pretty much if it installs at all.
That's not a big problem for me, if it works fine it's all it matters.
Great video
Can you use a tualatin cpu with a slot 1 to socket 370 adapter in this motherboard?
Not really as the voltage isn't supported. Only some special adapters support it. Then you also have the 133 MHz FSB. So yea, not that straight forward.
Do you know of any adapters that can do this for this motherboard? If not then what would be the fastest I could do on this motherboard - I have a 933 MHZ 133 FSB MHZ.
Your voice reminds me of the fish from american dad :P
LOL I hope my accent is not THAT bad :D
It's not bad, it is really cool actually, i like it :D
Haha no worries :D
can i use a Tualatin in a slot one converter? i dont like how expensive slot one is for what your getting. id like to do two Tualatin, i found a lot with two Pentium III-S SL5XL 1.45 for 20$ i also have two voodoo 2 cards i want to sli
+derp man nevermind i guess you answered that one in the video, im going to find the coverters, they seem reasonably priced
+derp man Not worth it. You will need to overclock the FSB, AGP clock will be out of spec. Just go with a fast Coppermine, 800 MHz or so, they are cheap as chips. Beyond that V2 SLI doesn't scale much anymore.
derp man There are Tualatin adapters but your board should support lower voltage and you should modify bios-add Tualatin microcodes if you want Windows XP.
what psu did you use? How much power will I need?
Pentium III is very energy efficient. I used a modern ATX PSU.
wattage?
I need some help. I CAN'T get my SATA to PATA interface/HDD work AT ALL? I checked all jumpers etc. etc. no luck.
if it isnt going to work try getting a used PATA hdd there pretty cheap i got one of 250 gb for only 7 bucks
Pentium 3 for retro gaming? I still remember playing Max Payne, Need For Speed Underground, Operation Flashpoint etc. on these!
+Krists Krieviņš I've been meaning to play through Max Payne 2 again... anyone know if it works okay under Windows 7 64?
It's windows... basically everything works and will work on W7, 8, 10 etc.
Krists Krieviņš
I ask because it is an old game developed very early in the Windows XP era and many games of that era don't work on later versions of windows, especially 64-bit versions.
+Krists Krieviņš Well, that's simply not true :) Most will work, agreed. And many can get fixed with tweaks. But there are games that simply break on newer software and hardware.
You just described what I said - basically everything. :)
Is there any point in using actual slot 1 processors? I have a compaq deskpro laying around (no agp slot so maybe ill go for a voodoo) and a 500mhz pentium 3.
I'd like to know if there is any point in this before buying anything. The motherboard is just a OEM board. Thanks if you take your time to help me :D
+Ramses De Vuyst I do believe so. Slot 1 PC makes for a great MS-DOS / Windows 98 hybrid gaming machine!
+PhilsComputerLab Would 500mhz be sufficient for the 98 titles?
It does depend a little bit on what game you want to play, but in general, yes absolutely.
+PhilsComputerLab Ok then i have to get myself a voodoo 2 then :D. I already have a sound card laying around that can do sound blaster emulation :p
Nice :) It's a fun hobby, that's for sure.
