1:19 Asrock boasts about being "an expert in Vista", yet the Windows logo in the corner says "Designed for Windows XP", and the board is being used for Windows 9x.
Presumably to assuade people that this board would support Vista. I assume it was before Microsoft had released any kind of list on what a Vista compatible machine should live up to, or for that matter a logo for OEMs to put on their boxes to say "Vista Ready"
@Max Paine You need to consider the era of these machine was released, for Pentium 4 alone there are at least 5 chipset maker that I know of (VIA, INTEL, SiS, Nvidia, AMD, yes AMD Chipset for Intel Processors) and each of them produce at least 3 different revision of chipsets, that includes support for SDRAM, RAMBUS, and DDR, so... if we were talking about AMD+Intel there are at least more than 50 chipsets that needs to be supported by microsoft and that's only for Intel Socket 478, and AMD Socket A. In my opinion these era was disaster because too much variant, in the end consumers are the one suffering, and btw Pentium III/II and older AMD K6/K6-2 also still popular.
Speaking of Vista. I think Phil should make atleast one Vista build :D There's hardly any videos about gaming PCs running Vista so that would be something new and interesting :D

I just completed my own windows 98 build and I used this as a guide for parts etc. The machine is working great and I can play all those old games I used to play as a kid/wish I could have played had I had the money. My next project is a windows XP machine based on one of your other videos. Love watching all these builds - keep up the great work!
I did something along these lines just last week - only I was targeting "Can run win98 well, but I'm mostly going to be playing DOS games on it with some Win9x stragglers and no 3d acceleration." Its a PII 400, 128MB ram, 64GB SATA ssd connected via an SATA->PATA adapter, and the motherboard even came with a nice yamaha XG chip right on it so even though I bought it "because" it had ISA I ended up using the onboard sound - its compatible with every DOS game i've thrown at it. Basically, I'm running games as old as Monkey Island 1 and as new as Age of Empires 2 and it handles everything in between just great. I'm sure there are exceptions of weird games that run too fast on a PII and too slow on a 486 but thats not as widespread of an issue as, say, games that run too fast on a 386 and only just right on an original 8088-4.77mhz. For those, I have a Tandy 1000 that can switch speeds anyway.
I think speed issues in games seemed to be mostly gone by then as well. The XG sound cards were something we put in our budget machines at the time, and most people thought them just fine. Far better than some of the other onboard chips for the time. Sounds like a pretty solid system! My older son decided to put together a machine for much the same purpose. Mostly non 3d gaming for windows 98 and before, and he found an MVP4 mainboard in my collection with a K6 of some sort. And he has been quite happy with it.
Good video! Two things to add: 1. mentioning/warning about the 3dfx AGP voltage issue on most P4 mainboards andcompatiblity issue. 2. there are optical drives with not only analog output but also SPDIF for which cards like SoundBlaster Live! have the input connector.
The thing I love about the socket 478 and 865PE chipset is it's extremely compatible with Windows 98 and does well for most XP and DOS games. I usually use a 3 ghz Pentium 4 (Northwoods), an Quadro FX 2000 graphics card and both Vortex 2 with Dreamblaster S1 and Audigy 2 sound cards to given me late 90s and early 2000s compatibility.
This reminds me of sitting for hours after every reinstall of win9X finding the best drivers and so on. Life is sooo much easyer today :) Love you retro builds Phil. Helps me remember my young days, with my friends, discussing pc parts and all the tings we wished we could afford. Thanks alot!
I used to game on Win 98SE using a nForce2 powered Epox 8RDA+, AthlonXP 2000+ and a Radeon 9500 Soft-Pro. Loved every minute of it, upgraded capacitors when it went wonky and is still running today.
I really want to do this one day. I remember my dad once bought me a star wars game but it wouldn't run on our old 98 prebuilt HP desktop. He even went out of his way to try and find a graphics card, spent the extra cash on one and tried to install it. Unfortunately he wasn't well versed enough to get it to work due to compatibility. Thanks for trying Dad, meant the world to me back then.
I still have my old Pentium III 800 system with a GeForce 2 GTS for Windows 98 . For my build in the Geforce FX era though, I had paired the parts with Windows XP as it was quite an improvement over Windows 98. Instead of a Pentium 4 or Geforce FX, I was using an AMD Athlon XP 2500 Barton Core OC'd to 3200 speeds, nForce 2 Ultra mainboard and a Radeon 9700 Pro as that build was much more affordable at the time compared to the Pentium 4 and FX set up. I still have all those old Win 98 and XP builds with me along with the games that i've bought on the original CDs.
I loved my old athlon xp2500 Barton :) hehe at that time I had fx card but I really did not like it....them I got gforce 6600gt and man that one was good
@@FilipoLipos I bought a Geforce 6600GT 64MB AGP version a couple of years after owning the 9700 Pro and still have it with me. It's a BFGTech version with a blue PCB and copper heatsinks.
What a coincidence! Just last weekend I finished my Pentium 4 Win 98/XP build. I went with a SiS chipset though as I wanted to mostly use parts I already had. Also, mine's low profile, so I'm a bit more limited with regards to GPU and sound card. So far I have settled on a GeForce 6200 and a SoundBlaster Live! 24-bit. Low end, but that just means cheap! :D
Didn't have time to go through the entire video, but if anyone's interested in grabbing one of these boards, be careful and avoid the P4i65GV. The P4i65G is a great mATX board, however the GV version uses a chipset that lacks a true AGP slot. ASrock pulled off some black magic and implemented their own "AGP" slot which I believe they dubbed AMI, this is very quirky as it apparently reroutes everything through PCI, which means performance suffers greatly, compatibility is not guaranteed and stability is iffy. I had first hand experience with that, remember getting 10-20fps in the opening areas of Jedi Academy no matter the resolution and details. It all went away as soon as I tries the G version.

I have something like this, Its a Slot1 Pentium 3 600 Mhz, and an FX5200 LP. Almost all OEM or old-ish parts, but was nice enough to run the small selection I have.
Inspired me to use this mainboard on a build. Went a different way. P4 3.2GHz 1000w EVGA Supernova G+ PSU Geforce 7800 GS 8XAGP 2GB 2x 1GB PC3200 DDR 400Mhz Added DVD drive, Wireless PCI card, Soundblaster, Gotek Floppy emu, Kingwin Fan controller with 2 case fans inside an Enermax CS-125. Waiting for the HD gpus to come available on eBay for that final best in slot AGP. Running windows XP.
I recently did a Windows 98 build on a Lenovo LGA 775 board from about 2011 - dual core Pentium CPU, Yamaha ymf744 sound card, and FireGL v7100 video card (equal to Radeon x800). Managed to get 100 percent device manager compatibility and even real DOS audio working.

I had this mobo in my parts bin I found it inside a pc someone had trashed a while ago and I was considering building a PIII win98 retro pc, not needed now that I know this one behaves so good in 98. I'm Gonna buy a cooler, a case, a p4 and that plastic hook thing for the cooler and Bob's your uncle.
Another good old retro stuff video, thanks. I personally recommend getting 775 board with i865 chipset and AGP slot. They will be harder to find, but you'll likely get problem-free capacitors, a huge range of cheap and silent CPU coolers and possibility to use at least power efficient 65nm Cedar Mill P4 processors, or the first range of Core2 prpcessors, some boards even support Q6600. So wide range of possibilities - running 98SE, XP and even W7/8/10 on one machine :)
i was looking for a reason to keep this free garage sale machine around and now i have it, i found this p4 hyperthreading machine at a garage sale and was given to me for free. it runs extremely well even modern linux distros dont seem to slow it down too much but i had no real use for it. course now i have the perfect use case thanks to your video
Any one else much prefer the way older computer parts look? Smaller heat-sinks showing off more of the bare PCB. Much nicer than the massive bricks with gaudy RGB lights they slap on GPUs now a days.
Great video, Phil. I used to have a Dell Dimension 4550 pc. I customized the PC and game it a Aureal Vortex 2 sound card, installed 512 MB of system memory, and replaced the crappy Geforce 4 MMX420 with a Geforce Ti 4600. I kept the pentium 4 2.0 Ghz processor in, and I installed windows 98 SE in the PC. It was a nice retro PC, but I had to junk it because one of the capacitors capsized. It was a shame, but I can't properly replace a defective capacitor on a motherboard. But that is why I built that Pentium 3 PC, not long ago, and I managed to give it a nice AWE32 soundcard. The Pentium 3 PC isn't quite as fast as the Dell Dimension 4550, but it's still a really good retro PC. I do have an Asus A8V-X motherboard with an AMD Athlon 64 4000+ CPU. I may built a pc out of that and install Windows 98 SE in it, but the CPU might be a bit too fast for old games, especially DOS games.
Still have my old 478 pc sitting in the closet . An A Open brand motherboard that you can o/c on . Running a P4 , 3.0ghz o/c to 3.2 (watch out) , 4gb ddr memory , an evga 7800 GS AGP video card that's also overclocked . It initially had 2gb of memory , but I upped it to 4gb for XP 32bit . It only sees 3.5 gb , as expected . Need to get it back out & dust it off & update it . Got my original pc running 98 SE , with a slot one P3 750 mhz cpu .
Love the video. I saved many P4 chips when they were basically throwaways and retro enthusiasts were still fawning over PII/III’s. Building Win 98 P4’s are challenging rewards, sometimes getting all the components and drivers to play nice. Makes it feel special when you get that build working well. Just wanted to share some good news with Phil. Got a hold of a Soltek Qbic EQ3401A. Bought second-hand, no massive info in regards to specs, so I had to make best guess from old articles. And I was decently lucky. CPU: Pentium 4, 2.8 GHz. (Could have been a celeron) Mobo: Intel 865 chipset. (Soltek custom) RAM: DDR 256 MB, single stick. Videocard: FX5200 passive. Dead on arrival. (Could have been on iGPU) Storage: HDD, IDE. Slow. Floppy and optical (CD x52). It turns on. The Videocard didn't work proper it seems. And the BIOS is incorrectly setup with S-ATA setting. (Possibly, because it's running XP and former owner must have set it that way). Used my Geforce MX4000 and got to the POST message, telling me the issues. Pressed F2 to continue and booted into WinXP. After everything was working, I decided to test my Radeon 9600XT. And presto. I have image and it's registered. Now... To re-learn how to install Win98SE and drivers and all that jazz. xD
and just when i thought i was going to take a break from building old computers... looks like i need to dig out the old 865 board and stare at driver install screens for a few hours....
you should see an i5-750 fly on 98, just did a dual boot windows 10/98 gaming PC, GTX 1050ti for windows 10 side and in FX 5500 for the windows 98 side with a pci sound blaster live card as well. I can play dos doom, windows 98 games with glide effects and then play Red Dead Redemption 2 all on the same PC best of both worlds. Heck maybe even through in a voodoo Card as well for the hell of it lol

Just a quick note, the hardware configuration for this video, is excellent configuration for Windows 2000, it will serve windows 2000 excellent. Windows 2000 and this motherboard will work really nicely with each other. The Nvidia Quadro FX 3000 will work really well, using enterprise/studio grade drivers for Quadro, known to be extra stable and extra reliable , and it will not compromise on OpenGL/DirectX gaming, as long as you take some attention to driver installers. My experience using and building systems with Windows 2000 shows the best way is: 1. Install Chipset driver 2. Reboot 3. Install GPU driver 4. Reboot 5. Install sound card drivers 6. Reboot 7. Optional install but good to have - You can also install OpenAL - OpenAudio Library, it works good favor for sound effects, basically improving spacial and positioning effects on sounds for many games without using creative sound cards and their respective CMSS or EAX 8. Install network card drivers 9. Reboot 10. Install OpenGL, for Windows 2000 it is a separate installer, you must install it additionally/separately. 11. Reboot 12. Install DirectX, for Windows 2000 it is a separate installer, you must install it additionally/separately. 13. Fully update Windows 2000 to following levels SP2 SRP1 as intermediate stage and then SP4 SRP1 as its final stage - You want the SRP1 stages, they are the important ones. They introduce some features and compatibilities, which regular SP do not. Reboot when prompted. Tip: About the CPU, Windows 2000 with SRP1s for bot SP2 and SP4 will make a good use of Pentium 4 with Hyper-threading and it will be able to use both threads, manage them and schedule them in an optimal way. Tip: Do not install more than 3 GB of RAM for Windows 2000, Best case scenario is 2GB RAM in Dual channel is more beneficial for performance, you will feel the difference, compared to 3 GB RAM in single channel. Now Windows 2000 is good to go and it will surprise you with compatible, stable and reliable work in games in both DirectX and OpenGL mode.
I want to see more videos with Athlon 64 in Windows 98 and XP and I'd love to see videos with the first generation of Phenom and with the Athlon 64 X2 as well.
Always nice to see some good retro content from my favourite era (and from my favourite yt channel)! My latest retro pc activity was another upgrade for my high-end win98 pc I have been modifying over the last couple of years. Have swapped three motherboards (one ECS, one QDI and now a Gigabyte all with VIA chipsets) and four processors (Celeron 900, P3 1000, P3 1000EB, now Tualatin 1.4GHz). For graphics I originally used a GF2Ti 32MB (also paired it with a Voodoo 1 at one point), at times an FX5500 and now I upgraded to an Albatron FX5900XTV. Sound card atm is the good ol' SB Live 5.1! SB0060 (I found for free recently), but I've also used the CT4810 and CMI8738 as a replacement after my original SB0100 died last year. p.s. btw I think I have that Asrock motherboard in my garage inside an old beat-up antek case (see? I have to check out now...)
I still use a Pentium 4 HT (3.0 GHz) weekly. It is installed in a midi tower from Compaq Evo with two stickers; Pentium 4 and Windows 98/2000. The motherboard is out of a HP D530 SFF, its Bios date is from 2003. The system has 1280 MB DDR (400MHz) and it runs 4 HDDs (2 x 320GB 2.5" on SATA-1 and 250GB + 320GB 3.5" on IDE). It runs FreeBSD 12.1 on ZFS and I backup my Ryzen desktop (running Ubuntu 19.10 on ZFS) every Saturday to this Pentium 4. Both also store a Virtualbox VM of Windows 98 SE.
Return to castle wolfenstein. Quake engine and I never stopped playing it! In fact, I still do, even multiplayer is still alive! Servers are privately funded now, but you can't resist a day on the 'Beach'. Look out for the server 'teatime' if you still have the game :)

Just built myself a mini P4 win98se PC using a shuttle XPC. I had to get the individual bits as I couldn't find the P4 board in the case, so i got the the case, the 875 board, the cooler and a 250W PSU. I have a few P4 so went with a 3GHZ one for now (may go for a lower if it runs to hot), a soundblaster live 5.1, a Radeon 9800 Pro (had to be single slot so I had to go dig out the original cooler) and as well as a floppy drive and DVD drive, I used a 500GB hybrid drive to get that SSD boost with less worry. Got the Voodoo 5 5500 to swap if needed. I was surprised at just how small it is, it makes even my coolermaster Elite 130 XP PC look huge. I have to say the only real downside was that I wouldn't do a USB install, so I had to do the easy2boot path via another PC for the first part, then plugged it in for the second part of the install and it worked out fine. I can finally have my 98/DOS PC on the desk with my current one and XP PC (got it sat on top of the XP one) instead of having to lug about the big Xaser III case whenever I fancy a play around with it.
You cant always judge good caps by the brand, the cap plauge had several companies putting name brand shrink wrap on their parts, so yea counterfit caps. You should look for leaking, swelling and top bulging.
14:20 if I’m not mistaken, Rayman games are originally PlayStation (PSX) titles, and it was very common practice for devs to lock frame rates to certain values in different cases. (Example that comes to mind we’re final fantasy games, menus ran at 60 but gameplay was locked to 20-30 I think)
Not true. While Rayman 2 did release on PSX it wasn't until a year after the N64 and PC versions came out. PC versions character animations are capped at 30FPS however the game's speed is capped at 63FPS. The game is known to have issues with the frame rate dropping from 60 to 30 randomly however it's usually when playing the game on modern hardware so I'm not sure.
What they did was change resolution frequently. Having 3D scenes at lower resolutions for acceptable framerates, and displaying pure menues at bigger resolutions to make text readable.
Usually when games drop from 60 to 30 fps like that it is caused by double buffer vsync locking to the next closest frame rate divisible into the refresh rate so on a 60 hz monitor double buffer would drop to 30 fps when 60 fps cant be reached.
You can also use or pick up a Turtle Beach Riviera 5.1 Surround Sound Card - Part# TBS-3425. Works on PII 450mhz or higher Win.98 to Win.XP .. Mobo: AsRock LGA 775 Conroe which had AGP & PCIExpress for graphics. Could run Intel dual-core or quad-core cpu's and either or DDR III or 4. Mine still works, got it running a GeForce 7600 GT.. Also, still have my e-Geforce 7950 GX2 but it wouldn't work on this board. AsRock never updated the Bios to include dual gpu's to get it to work right.
I actually have a similar machine that I built around an old video capture board. Mine's a 2.8GHz P4 in an Intel D865perl motherboard. It's an odd mobo, with a pair of first-gen sata ports and Firewire connectivity. And to top off the weirdness, an AGP Matrox Parhelia triple-head video card.
Hello. I’m Kacper Biernacki from Poland - Wloclawek and maybe I'll start with the story that happened to me when I was little. I got somehow used computer in 2002-2003, which was originally dated March 1998. It had AMD Athlon 2000 XP processor + GeForce 2 graphics card with 64 MB RAM. First it had Win95 then 98SE. I was 5 years old when my parents sold this computer in March 2004. In April 2004 I got another used computer. It had a specification from April 2002 with Win2000 on board. In 2005 there was a change in WinXP. The computer had a Gigabyte motherboard with Pentium 4 and 512 MB RAM and GeForce 4 TI. Unfortunately, the computer broke down. I had WinXP until 2013 until I switched to Win7. And here, with the Win XP era, I am completely out of retro. Since December 2016, I've been thinking about putting together a retro PC in different ways. In the end I gave up because I didn't know how to start and who to ask for help in general. In the end, my idea for a retro PC is 8 computers, of which 1 in each system, namely: DOS / Win 3.1 / Win95 / 98SE / Me / 2000 / XP and a computer with 3DFX Voodoo 1 or 2 accelerator or another very good or other graphic accelerator. My point is that computers would be the most powerful for games and that they would not be dead and would die after a month. I would like such computers to serve me a good 10 15 20 or even 25 years. I asked a lot of people, they spread their hands or they said they were brave and they threw me the idea of a virtual machine or were afraid to take it or did not know how. I have a lot of games that have accumulated over the years, such as Screamer 2 or Die Hard Trilogy or NFS III which do not want to work with Win7. At the virtual machines I have blooded myself. Too many nerves would have gone wrong The above are just examples of games that I have in my collection. I don't really mean computers only for specific games. I mean computers that would run all retro games from those years. I would also like to learn about computer science and, in general, as well as the programs running on such systems and computers from the DOS / 3.1 / 95 / 98SE / Me / 2000 / XP period. I very much miss this time. My parents caused me a great loss of my childhood. And now I don't know how to get it all back. I dream about these computers running all retro games, meaning that they will be the most powerful. I watched LGR movie about how Clint built a DOS computer on AMD Ryzen and it was really something. It was a great WOW for me. Just a shock. Just like he made the most powerful computer under Windows XP. It is also a shock for me. I dream about such the most powerful computers from such a period from DOS to XP. Of course, I tried to build something myself, but suddenly I lost strength because I did not know how to build a computer in old architectures. Ever since I lost touch with retro games I started to cry. I was still sad being small. Later my health deteriorated because I missed what I wanted to have, and my parents sold my first computer without my permission. The other broke. And since then I have no contact with retro. In my opinion you are the last lifebuoy to fulfill my dream / request. My parents even begged them to return the computer. Unfortunately to no avail. I still cry when I see my old games from the collection and other retro games from those times from the 80s, 90s or 2000s. Retro games are generally known. I would like to ask you to read this message and understand me and my situation. And I'm really in a lost position and I don't know how to get it back.
When you did the videos with the 775ig65 I also saw in Amazon these 478 boards (Also NOS) but I didn't had really any variety of 478 CPUs so I didn't got one ☹️. I really loved having a Thunderbird 1.3 and latter an Athlon XP 2600 for a lot of years (kept using W98 until XP SP1 was released) Now I just love your videos and collect old hardware that I didn't try back then, like all these Intel P3 and P4 CPUs or K6s... Now... To find some cheap GeForce 4 card, as I never had one, thanks for the tip on that Quadro model, my GeForce 3 stopped working (maybe some caps as it worked when I stored it) and I don't have any card from that time period that can keep up with a P4 and the latest win98 games!
Awesome. Just found my Sound Blaster Live 5.1 yesterday and I still have my old GeForce 3 Ti 500...I really want to build another retro PC after watching this!
Good thing I have most of these components available and ready to go (except matching DDR sticks). I've got a FX5200 and a SoundBlaster for my project, and they seem to be the best solution for me and both cost USD 10. I still have to get a new case, since the ones I have are in bad shape and stink of cigarettes.

I was thinking of doing a Socket 478 Pentium 4 build for XP. Turns out the recycler had exactly zero good 478 boards but there were several decent 775 ones. The board I ended up with has a 955X, a P5WD2 I think. Best part is the processor: a 3.73 GHz Pentium 4 EE! Keep in mind this was a recycled part I picked up basically for free. I don't know what it's worth, but they seem hard to find, and it works great. Overclocks like crap though.

I have the same motherboard and processor. I have some bios setup questions: What setting do you recommend for IDE operate mode? Enhanced or compatible mode? I don't use any sata connections. Next question: did you disable hyperthreading in the bios? Is it necessary or not? Thank you and love your videos. They have been a great help on many occasions.
Try compatible and also disable the SATA ports in the BIOS if there is an option. HT will just get ignored, but yea, if there is a setting disable it :)
Just got a hold of an old Pentium 4 HT, 2.8 GHz With 512 MB RAM On a Gigabyte GA-8IG1000MK mobo. A dying 65GB IDE/PATA drive, which only works, if it's on it's side. (I have an 80 GB spare lying around, if I can find it) Functioning floppy-drive and CD drive. No dGPU, but has an iGPU, which is fine for diagnosting. XP is installed. In 1½ week, I'm gonna bring along my old Radeon 9600 and GeForce 4 MX440, to see which of them works. :)

Lol I have this exact same cooler on my FX5900 Ultra, that's what this Quadro is based on I'm guessing? I remember ironically buying it for 20 euros in 2011 with the stigma on the FX-series and while thinking about starting a project of benchmark cards through generations. They are offered on Ebay for around 400usd these days, nostalgia is one hell of a drug.
What an era!!! I wasn't able to buy a p4 in those times because they were so expensive, instead i had an Amd Athlon Xp 2400+ wich worked flawless with windows 98 se and a geforce 4 mx440. I only had 128mb ddr ram at first and upgraded to a later to 640 mb😂
I was right with you there using an AMD Athlon XP 2500+ and a GeForce 4 MX440. The video card I used for so long that eventually I got made fun of for using it but as long as it did what I needed it to do I did not need a new video card. Honestly wishing I could get that and another older retro system again.
I went with a Celeron 2.8Ghz my self, because with some old games, they don't like the micro code of the pentium 4. And we can't exactly use the HT in the Pentium 4 anyway. And a Geforce 4 Ti 4400. Using driver version 44.03... i think that was the one, it gives the best performance for the Geforce 4 series. The geforce 4 series has better compatibillity with older directx games (dx8/7/6) then a Geforce FX card. I learned the hard way that a dx9 card with dx9 enabled drivers would make some dx6/5 games not work anymore. I think i read somewhere that some of the directx functions was reused for other fuctions hence breaking older directx compatibillity.
I made a similar system for my brother so he could run older games with Win98: P4/2.4GHz, 1.5GB RAM, something like a low profile 6600 GPU (flat style case), it runs very well. I forget the mbd model offhand though.
Just took apart my rig with p4 3ghz, 2x256mb ddr, radeon 9800 pro and intel d865glc. Motherboard needs to be recapped. Vrm area seems fine, but have swollen ones down near sata connectors and front panel has always connected headphones (in xp) even when motherboard does not have even cable plugged in.

I'm using a Socket 775 Pentium 4 (3.4 GHz HT) and Windows XP for my "vintage" or "retro" games. Why? Because so many older games are available on GOG.com for a reasonable price. Unfortunately, most of them have been "retooled" to run under SCUMMVM with a minimum OS requirement of Windows XP. Steam games are not really an option since they dropped support for Win XP. If only GOG.com would include the ORIGINAL installation files with the purchase of an older game...
Years ago I ran a P4 2.8ghz Northwood, with 2GB ram and a 6800 GT running Windows XP. It struggled in a few games but played many of them pretty well. When I was updating the system I was trying to get an ASRock motherboard (all I could find was used), but each time the sellers on eBay sent me the wrong board, 2 of which was broken. So I just ended up using the same motherboard that came with the HP D530 SFF and I slapped it into an Antec three hundred case (not to be mistaken with the three hundred two case). I did this mainly to get away from the SFF case and it's PSU (that likes to go boom). Plus the 6800 GT wouldn't fit in the stock case.
If you are looking for a cheap but solid Pentium 4 platform with the 865 chipset, i suggest you get an HP D530 SFF pc! "But that's a low profile pc, i want to be able to use full sized graphics cards!!" and i would say yes, i know, but hear me out! The mobo inside these computers use the standard micro atx platform, so you can put it into a regular tower case no problem! Yes you won't have the I/O shield, but if that doesn't matter to you, you can build an awesome P4 pc with this board like i did! I have a P4 3Ghz with 512mb and a good cooler on it and it works fine! And the Geforce FX is great for Win98 gaming! I know this video is 4 years old, but it is still relevant, and maby Phil can show off a build using one of these motherboards! The early ones use bad caps, but the later ones use good quality caps!
Just for reference, after testing a lot of 478 motherboards, I can tell you that the best cheap board for 478 is this P4i65G, mine is running a prescott 3.0 @3.7ghz with ddr 500 memory, it works really good but the vrm really gets hot so I added littles heatsinks and its way better, just a really solid motherboard!
I'll have to track down a Quadro, that's a great idea. For some reason, PCI-E cards find their way to me in piles, but I can't ever get my hands on a decent AGP card. I have an Athlon64 build sitting here waiting for the right deal :) I haven't tried 98 on any of these yet, just XP - I'll have to give it a shot now. Another good video, thanks!
I really liked this video. I was honestly getting tired of all the cheap AlieX stuff you've been reviewing lately where every video was about some generic motherboard or CPU cooler or whatever, and even in build videos you'd use parts that are mostly from Aliexpress. Seeing this video that had none of that was nice, it's more like the content you used to make back when I started watching your videos in 2017.
When i was a kid, my ,,dream machine" was a Pentium 4 3.0 Ghz with GeForce 6600GT, that i never built unfortunately. Now an i5 8400 and RTX 2060 blast the fps out of my games. :D
Recently came across an LGA775 board with AGP and official support for Windows 98 and it seems to work well, now I just need to find the right graphics card, might look at one of the quadro cards you mentioned here. Thanks!
I just pulled my old Pentium 4 3.2 GHz machine out of storage and it works fine, it has a Geforce 5950 so was wondering if I could actually put Windows 98 on it. It's been a long time since I used that OS and wanted to play around with it. era faithful parts are so expensive so if I can get it working on the machine I have that would be awesome.
i have a asus p4p800s...845 chipset ...p4 2.0....512mb 400mhz and a fx 5200 128mb agp for win 98 se.. no issues with usb or using sata and the ide together....very stable and fast

I had the ABIT AS8 motherboard with my Pentium 4 3.8GHz CPU, and that had the Intel i865PE chipset and worked really well with everything I threw at it.
1:19 Asrock boasts about being "an expert in Vista", yet the Windows logo in the corner says "Designed for Windows XP", and the board is being used for Windows 9x.
Presumably to assuade people that this board would support Vista. I assume it was before Microsoft had released any kind of list on what a Vista compatible machine should live up to, or for that matter a logo for OEMs to put on their boxes to say "Vista Ready"
@Max Paine because requirements didn't change between those versions of Windows, but they did between xp and Vista.
@Max Paine You need to consider the era of these machine was released, for Pentium 4 alone there are at least 5 chipset maker that I know of (VIA, INTEL, SiS, Nvidia, AMD, yes AMD Chipset for Intel Processors) and each of them produce at least 3 different revision of chipsets, that includes support for SDRAM, RAMBUS, and DDR, so... if we were talking about AMD+Intel there are at least more than 50 chipsets that needs to be supported by microsoft and that's only for Intel Socket 478, and AMD Socket A. In my opinion these era was disaster because too much variant, in the end consumers are the one suffering, and btw Pentium III/II and older AMD K6/K6-2 also still popular.

I just completed my own windows 98 build and I used this as a guide for parts etc. The machine is working great and I can play all those old games I used to play as a kid/wish I could have played had I had the money. My next project is a windows XP machine based on one of your other videos. Love watching all these builds - keep up the great work!

I did something along these lines just last week - only I was targeting "Can run win98 well, but I'm mostly going to be playing DOS games on it with some Win9x stragglers and no 3d acceleration." Its a PII 400, 128MB ram, 64GB SATA ssd connected via an SATA->PATA adapter, and the motherboard even came with a nice yamaha XG chip right on it so even though I bought it "because" it had ISA I ended up using the onboard sound - its compatible with every DOS game i've thrown at it. Basically, I'm running games as old as Monkey Island 1 and as new as Age of Empires 2 and it handles everything in between just great.
I'm sure there are exceptions of weird games that run too fast on a PII and too slow on a 486 but thats not as widespread of an issue as, say, games that run too fast on a 386 and only just right on an original 8088-4.77mhz. For those, I have a Tandy 1000 that can switch speeds anyway.
I think speed issues in games seemed to be mostly gone by then as well. The XG sound cards were something we put in our budget machines at the time, and most people thought them just fine. Far better than some of the other onboard chips for the time. Sounds like a pretty solid system!
My older son decided to put together a machine for much the same purpose. Mostly non 3d gaming for windows 98 and before, and he found an MVP4 mainboard in my collection with a K6 of some sort. And he has been quite happy with it.
Good video! Two things to add:
1. mentioning/warning about the 3dfx AGP voltage issue on most P4 mainboards andcompatiblity issue.
2. there are optical drives with not only analog output but also SPDIF for which cards like SoundBlaster Live! have the input connector.
The thing I love about the socket 478 and 865PE chipset is it's extremely compatible with Windows 98 and does well for most XP and DOS games. I usually use a 3 ghz Pentium 4 (Northwoods), an Quadro FX 2000 graphics card and both Vortex 2 with Dreamblaster S1 and Audigy 2 sound cards to given me late 90s and early 2000s compatibility.
This reminds me of sitting for hours after every reinstall of win9X finding the best drivers and so on. Life is sooo much easyer today :) Love you retro builds Phil. Helps me remember my young days, with my friends, discussing pc parts and all the tings we wished we could afford. Thanks alot!

I used to game on Win 98SE using a nForce2 powered Epox 8RDA+, AthlonXP 2000+ and a Radeon 9500 Soft-Pro. Loved every minute of it, upgraded capacitors when it went wonky and is still running today.
I really want to do this one day. I remember my dad once bought me a star wars game but it wouldn't run on our old 98 prebuilt HP desktop. He even went out of his way to try and find a graphics card, spent the extra cash on one and tried to install it. Unfortunately he wasn't well versed enough to get it to work due to compatibility. Thanks for trying Dad, meant the world to me back then.
I still have my old Pentium III 800 system with a GeForce 2 GTS for Windows 98 . For my build in the Geforce FX era though, I had paired the parts with Windows XP as it was quite an improvement over Windows 98. Instead of a Pentium 4 or Geforce FX, I was using an AMD Athlon XP 2500 Barton Core OC'd to 3200 speeds, nForce 2 Ultra mainboard and a Radeon 9700 Pro as that build was much more affordable at the time compared to the Pentium 4 and FX set up. I still have all those old Win 98 and XP builds with me along with the games that i've bought on the original CDs.

What a coincidence! Just last weekend I finished my Pentium 4 Win 98/XP build. I went with a SiS chipset though as I wanted to mostly use parts I already had. Also, mine's low profile, so I'm a bit more limited with regards to GPU and sound card. So far I have settled on a GeForce 6200 and a SoundBlaster Live! 24-bit. Low end, but that just means cheap! :D
Didn't have time to go through the entire video, but if anyone's interested in grabbing one of these boards, be careful and avoid the P4i65GV. The P4i65G is a great mATX board, however the GV version uses a chipset that lacks a true AGP slot. ASrock pulled off some black magic and implemented their own "AGP" slot which I believe they dubbed AMI, this is very quirky as it apparently reroutes everything through PCI, which means performance suffers greatly, compatibility is not guaranteed and stability is iffy.
I had first hand experience with that, remember getting 10-20fps in the opening areas of Jedi Academy no matter the resolution and details. It all went away as soon as I tries the G version.

I have something like this, Its a Slot1 Pentium 3 600 Mhz, and an FX5200 LP. Almost all OEM or old-ish parts, but was nice enough to run the small selection I have.
Everyone hated the FX series back in the day. I loved my 5950 Ultra!

Just bought a shabby 5900XT for 8 bucks. Crossed fingers that it works as stated.
I recently did a Windows 98 build on a Lenovo LGA 775 board from about 2011 - dual core Pentium CPU, Yamaha ymf744 sound card, and FireGL v7100 video card (equal to Radeon x800). Managed to get 100 percent device manager compatibility and even real DOS audio working.
Phil, Pentium 4 and win 98 has been on my mind for a few months now.

Another good old retro stuff video, thanks. I personally recommend getting 775 board with i865 chipset and AGP slot. They will be harder to find, but you'll likely get problem-free capacitors, a huge range of cheap and silent CPU coolers and possibility to use at least power efficient 65nm Cedar Mill P4 processors, or the first range of Core2 prpcessors, some boards even support Q6600. So wide range of possibilities - running 98SE, XP and even W7/8/10 on one machine :)
would be cool to build a system like that with a hard drive containing partitions for all of those operating systems.

i was looking for a reason to keep this free garage sale machine around and now i have it, i found this p4 hyperthreading machine at a garage sale and was given to me for free. it runs extremely well even modern linux distros dont seem to slow it down too much but i had no real use for it. course now i have the perfect use case thanks to your video
On the subject of Voodoo cards I saw a Voodoo 4 card on eBay for $800 or $900. Now I may want one like a lot of people, but not that much.

Any one else much prefer the way older computer parts look? Smaller heat-sinks showing off more of the bare PCB. Much nicer than the massive bricks with gaudy RGB lights they slap on GPUs now a days.
Great video, Phil. I used to have a Dell Dimension 4550 pc. I customized the PC and game it a Aureal Vortex 2 sound card, installed 512 MB of system memory, and replaced the crappy Geforce 4 MMX420 with a Geforce Ti 4600. I kept the pentium 4 2.0 Ghz processor in, and I installed windows 98 SE in the PC. It was a nice retro PC, but I had to junk it because one of the capacitors capsized. It was a shame, but I can't properly replace a defective capacitor on a motherboard. But that is why I built that Pentium 3 PC, not long ago, and I managed to give it a nice AWE32 soundcard. The Pentium 3 PC isn't quite as fast as the Dell Dimension 4550, but it's still a really good retro PC. I do have an Asus A8V-X motherboard with an AMD Athlon 64 4000+ CPU. I may built a pc out of that and install Windows 98 SE in it, but the CPU might be a bit too fast for old games, especially DOS games.
Still have my old 478 pc sitting in the closet . An A Open brand motherboard that you can o/c on . Running a P4 , 3.0ghz o/c to 3.2 (watch out) , 4gb ddr memory , an evga 7800 GS AGP video card that's also overclocked . It initially had 2gb of memory , but I upped it to 4gb for XP 32bit . It only sees 3.5 gb , as expected . Need to get it back out & dust it off & update it . Got my original pc running 98 SE , with a slot one P3 750 mhz cpu .
Love the video. I saved many P4 chips when they were basically throwaways and retro enthusiasts were still fawning over PII/III’s.
Building Win 98 P4’s are challenging rewards, sometimes getting all the components and drivers to play nice. Makes it feel special when you get that build working well.

Just wanted to share some good news with Phil.
Got a hold of a Soltek Qbic EQ3401A.
Bought second-hand, no massive info in regards to specs, so I had to make best guess from old articles. And I was decently lucky.
CPU: Pentium 4, 2.8 GHz. (Could have been a celeron)
Mobo: Intel 865 chipset. (Soltek custom)
RAM: DDR 256 MB, single stick.
Videocard: FX5200 passive. Dead on arrival. (Could have been on iGPU)
Storage: HDD, IDE. Slow.
Floppy and optical (CD x52).
It turns on. The Videocard didn't work proper it seems. And the BIOS is incorrectly setup with S-ATA setting. (Possibly, because it's running XP and former owner must have set it that way).
Used my Geforce MX4000 and got to the POST message, telling me the issues.
Pressed F2 to continue and booted into WinXP.
After everything was working, I decided to test my Radeon 9600XT.
And presto. I have image and it's registered.
Now...
To re-learn how to install Win98SE and drivers and all that jazz. xD

You should also do a video of windows 98 on an Athlon XP some time.
you should see an i5-750 fly on 98, just did a dual boot windows 10/98 gaming PC, GTX 1050ti for windows 10 side and in FX 5500 for the windows 98 side with a pci sound blaster live card as well. I can play dos doom, windows 98 games with glide effects and then play Red Dead Redemption 2 all on the same PC best of both worlds. Heck maybe even through in a voodoo Card as well for the hell of it lol

Version in the club was glquake unofficial 1.13, and it had model and movement interpolation, and even some fog)

Just a quick note, the hardware configuration for this video, is excellent configuration for Windows 2000, it will serve windows 2000 excellent. Windows 2000 and this motherboard will work really nicely with each other. The Nvidia Quadro FX 3000 will work really well, using enterprise/studio grade drivers for Quadro, known to be extra stable and extra reliable , and it will not compromise on OpenGL/DirectX gaming, as long as you take some attention to driver installers. My experience using and building systems with Windows 2000 shows the best way is:
1. Install Chipset driver
2. Reboot
3. Install GPU driver
4. Reboot
5. Install sound card drivers
6. Reboot
7. Optional install but good to have - You can also install OpenAL - OpenAudio Library, it works good favor for sound effects, basically improving spacial and positioning effects on sounds for many games without using creative sound cards and their respective CMSS or EAX
8. Install network card drivers
9. Reboot
10. Install OpenGL, for Windows 2000 it is a separate installer, you must install it additionally/separately.
11. Reboot
12. Install DirectX, for Windows 2000 it is a separate installer, you must install it additionally/separately.
13. Fully update Windows 2000 to following levels SP2 SRP1 as intermediate stage and then SP4 SRP1 as its final stage - You want the SRP1 stages, they are the important ones. They introduce some features and compatibilities, which regular SP do not. Reboot when prompted.
Tip:
About the CPU, Windows 2000 with SRP1s for bot SP2 and SP4 will make a good use of Pentium 4 with Hyper-threading and it will be able to use both threads, manage them and schedule them in an optimal way.
Tip: Do not install more than 3 GB of RAM for Windows 2000, Best case scenario is 2GB RAM in Dual channel is more beneficial for performance, you will feel the difference, compared to 3 GB RAM in single channel.
Now Windows 2000 is good to go and it will surprise you with compatible, stable and reliable work in games in both DirectX and OpenGL mode.

Always nice to see some good retro content from my favourite era (and from my favourite yt channel)! My latest retro pc activity was another upgrade for my high-end win98 pc I have been modifying over the last couple of years. Have swapped three motherboards (one ECS, one QDI and now a Gigabyte all with VIA chipsets) and four processors (Celeron 900, P3 1000, P3 1000EB, now Tualatin 1.4GHz). For graphics I originally used a GF2Ti 32MB (also paired it with a Voodoo 1 at one point), at times an FX5500 and now I upgraded to an Albatron FX5900XTV. Sound card atm is the good ol' SB Live 5.1! SB0060 (I found for free recently), but I've also used the CT4810 and CMI8738 as a replacement after my original SB0100 died last year.
p.s. btw I think I have that Asrock motherboard in my garage inside an old beat-up antek case (see? I have to check out now...)
I have an old thrift store find of a Shuttle XPC that has a PCI and AGP slot, and it's an i865G chipset.
I still use a Pentium 4 HT (3.0 GHz) weekly. It is installed in a midi tower from Compaq Evo with two stickers; Pentium 4 and Windows 98/2000. The motherboard is out of a HP D530 SFF, its Bios date is from 2003. The system has 1280 MB DDR (400MHz) and it runs 4 HDDs (2 x 320GB 2.5" on SATA-1 and 250GB + 320GB 3.5" on IDE). It runs FreeBSD 12.1 on ZFS and I backup my Ryzen desktop (running Ubuntu 19.10 on ZFS) every Saturday to this Pentium 4. Both also store a Virtualbox VM of Windows 98 SE.
Return to castle wolfenstein. Quake engine and I never stopped playing it! In fact, I still do, even multiplayer is still alive! Servers are privately funded now, but you can't resist a day on the 'Beach'. Look out for the server 'teatime' if you still have the game :)

Just built myself a mini P4 win98se PC using a shuttle XPC. I had to get the individual bits as I couldn't find the P4 board in the case, so i got the the case, the 875 board, the cooler and a 250W PSU. I have a few P4 so went with a 3GHZ one for now (may go for a lower if it runs to hot), a soundblaster live 5.1, a Radeon 9800 Pro (had to be single slot so I had to go dig out the original cooler) and as well as a floppy drive and DVD drive, I used a 500GB hybrid drive to get that SSD boost with less worry. Got the Voodoo 5 5500 to swap if needed.
I was surprised at just how small it is, it makes even my coolermaster Elite 130 XP PC look huge. I have to say the only real downside was that I wouldn't do a USB install, so I had to do the easy2boot path via another PC for the first part, then plugged it in for the second part of the install and it worked out fine.
I can finally have my 98/DOS PC on the desk with my current one and XP PC (got it sat on top of the XP one) instead of having to lug about the big Xaser III case whenever I fancy a play around with it.
You cant always judge good caps by the brand, the cap plauge had several companies putting name brand shrink wrap on their parts, so yea counterfit caps. You should look for leaking, swelling and top bulging.
14:20 if I’m not mistaken, Rayman games are originally PlayStation (PSX) titles, and it was very common practice for devs to lock frame rates to certain values in different cases. (Example that comes to mind we’re final fantasy games, menus ran at 60 but gameplay was locked to 20-30 I think)
Not true. While Rayman 2 did release on PSX it wasn't until a year after the N64 and PC versions came out. PC versions character animations are capped at 30FPS however the game's speed is capped at 63FPS. The game is known to have issues with the frame rate dropping from 60 to 30 randomly however it's usually when playing the game on modern hardware so I'm not sure.

What they did was change resolution frequently. Having 3D scenes at lower resolutions for acceptable framerates, and displaying pure menues at bigger resolutions to make text readable.
Usually when games drop from 60 to 30 fps like that it is caused by double buffer vsync locking to the next closest frame rate divisible into the refresh rate so on a 60 hz monitor double buffer would drop to 30 fps when 60 fps cant be reached.
You can also use or pick up a Turtle Beach Riviera 5.1 Surround Sound Card - Part# TBS-3425. Works on PII 450mhz or higher Win.98 to Win.XP .. Mobo: AsRock LGA 775 Conroe which had AGP & PCIExpress for graphics. Could run Intel dual-core or quad-core cpu's and either or DDR III or 4.
Mine still works, got it running a GeForce 7600 GT.. Also, still have my e-Geforce 7950 GX2 but it wouldn't work on this board. AsRock never updated the Bios to include dual gpu's to get it to work right.
I actually have a similar machine that I built around an old video capture board. Mine's a 2.8GHz P4 in an Intel D865perl motherboard. It's an odd mobo, with a pair of first-gen sata ports and Firewire connectivity. And to top off the weirdness, an AGP Matrox Parhelia triple-head video card.

I’m Kacper Biernacki from Poland - Wloclawek and maybe I'll start with the story that happened to me when I was little. I got somehow used computer in 2002-2003, which was originally dated March 1998. It had AMD Athlon 2000 XP processor + GeForce 2 graphics card with 64 MB RAM. First it had Win95 then 98SE. I was 5 years old when my parents sold this computer in March 2004. In April 2004 I got another used computer. It had a specification from April 2002 with Win2000 on board. In 2005 there was a change in WinXP. The computer had a Gigabyte motherboard with Pentium 4 and 512 MB RAM and GeForce 4 TI. Unfortunately, the computer broke down. I had WinXP until 2013 until I switched to Win7. And here, with the Win XP era, I am completely out of retro. Since December 2016, I've been thinking about putting together a retro PC in different ways. In the end I gave up because I didn't know how to start and who to ask for help in general. In the end, my idea for a retro PC is 8 computers, of which 1 in each system, namely: DOS / Win 3.1 / Win95 / 98SE / Me / 2000 / XP and a computer with 3DFX Voodoo 1 or 2 accelerator or another very good or other graphic accelerator. My point is that computers would be the most powerful for games and that they would not be dead and would die after a month. I would like such computers to serve me a good 10 15 20 or even 25 years. I asked a lot of people, they spread their hands or they said they were brave and they threw me the idea of a virtual machine or were afraid to take it or did not know how. I have a lot of games that have accumulated over the years, such as Screamer 2 or Die Hard Trilogy or NFS III which do not want to work with Win7. At the virtual machines I have blooded myself. Too many nerves would have gone wrong
The above are just examples of games that I have in my collection. I don't really mean computers only for specific games. I mean computers that would run all retro games from those years. I would also like to learn about computer science and, in general, as well as the programs running on such systems and computers from the DOS / 3.1 / 95 / 98SE / Me / 2000 / XP period.
I very much miss this time. My parents caused me a great loss of my childhood. And now I don't know how to get it all back. I dream about these computers running all retro games, meaning that they will be the most powerful. I watched LGR movie about how Clint built a DOS computer on AMD Ryzen and it was really something. It was a great WOW for me. Just a shock. Just like he made the most powerful computer under Windows XP. It is also a shock for me. I dream about such the most powerful computers from such a period from DOS to XP. Of course, I tried to build something myself, but suddenly I lost strength because I did not know how to build a computer in old architectures. Ever since I lost touch with retro games I started to cry. I was still sad being small. Later my health deteriorated because I missed what I wanted to have, and my parents sold my first computer without my permission. The other broke. And since then I have no contact with retro.
In my opinion you are the last lifebuoy to fulfill my dream / request. My parents even begged them to return the computer. Unfortunately to no avail.
I still cry when I see my old games from the collection and other retro games from those times from the 80s, 90s or 2000s. Retro games are generally known.
I would like to ask you to read this message and understand me and my situation. And I'm really in a lost position and I don't know how to get it back.
When you did the videos with the 775ig65 I also saw in Amazon these 478 boards (Also NOS) but I didn't had really any variety of 478 CPUs so I didn't got one ☹️.
I really loved having a Thunderbird 1.3 and latter an Athlon XP 2600 for a lot of years (kept using W98 until XP SP1 was released) Now I just love your videos and collect old hardware that I didn't try back then, like all these Intel P3 and P4 CPUs or K6s...
Now... To find some cheap GeForce 4 card, as I never had one, thanks for the tip on that Quadro model, my GeForce 3 stopped working (maybe some caps as it worked when I stored it) and I don't have any card from that time period that can keep up with a P4 and the latest win98 games!

Good thing I have most of these components available and ready to go (except matching DDR sticks). I've got a FX5200 and a SoundBlaster for my project, and they seem to be the best solution for me and both cost USD 10. I still have to get a new case, since the ones I have are in bad shape and stink of cigarettes.

I was thinking of doing a Socket 478 Pentium 4 build for XP. Turns out the recycler had exactly zero good 478 boards but there were several decent 775 ones. The board I ended up with has a 955X, a P5WD2 I think.
Best part is the processor: a 3.73 GHz Pentium 4 EE! Keep in mind this was a recycled part I picked up basically for free. I don't know what it's worth, but they seem hard to find, and it works great. Overclocks like crap though.
Extreme Editions are definitely collectors items!

I have the same motherboard and processor. I have some bios setup questions: What setting do you recommend for IDE operate mode? Enhanced or compatible mode? I don't use any sata connections.
Next question: did you disable hyperthreading in the bios? Is it necessary or not?

Try compatible and also disable the SATA ports in the BIOS if there is an option. HT will just get ignored, but yea, if there is a setting disable it :)

Just got a hold of an old Pentium 4 HT, 2.8 GHz
With 512 MB RAM
On a Gigabyte GA-8IG1000MK mobo.
A dying 65GB IDE/PATA drive, which only works, if it's on it's side. (I have an 80 GB spare lying around, if I can find it)
Functioning floppy-drive and CD drive.
No dGPU, but has an iGPU, which is fine for diagnosting.
XP is installed.
In 1½ week, I'm gonna bring along my old Radeon 9600 and GeForce 4 MX440, to see which of them works. :)

Have gotten a hold of MX4000 and Geforce 6600.
This inspired me to put win98se on an old medion Pentium 4 prebuild with a fx5200 gpu that I have.

Lol I have this exact same cooler on my FX5900 Ultra, that's what this Quadro is based on I'm guessing? I remember ironically buying it for 20 euros in 2011 with the stigma on the FX-series and while thinking about starting a project of benchmark cards through generations. They are offered on Ebay for around 400usd these days, nostalgia is one hell of a drug.
What an era!!! I wasn't able to buy a p4 in those times because they were so expensive, instead i had an Amd Athlon Xp 2400+ wich worked flawless with windows 98 se and a geforce 4 mx440. I only had 128mb ddr ram at first and upgraded to a later to 640 mb😂
I was right with you there using an AMD Athlon XP 2500+ and a GeForce 4 MX440. The video card I used for so long that eventually I got made fun of for using it but as long as it did what I needed it to do I did not need a new video card. Honestly wishing I could get that and another older retro system again.
I went with a Celeron 2.8Ghz my self, because with some old games, they don't like the micro code of the pentium 4. And we can't exactly use the HT in the Pentium 4 anyway.
And a Geforce 4 Ti 4400. Using driver version 44.03... i think that was the one, it gives the best performance for the Geforce 4 series.
The geforce 4 series has better compatibillity with older directx games (dx8/7/6) then a Geforce FX card.
I learned the hard way that a dx9 card with dx9 enabled drivers would make some dx6/5 games not work anymore.
I think i read somewhere that some of the directx functions was reused for other fuctions hence breaking older directx compatibillity.
I made a similar system for my brother so he could run older games with Win98: P4/2.4GHz, 1.5GB RAM, something like a low profile 6600 GPU (flat style case), it runs very well. I forget the mbd model offhand though.
How did you get Windows 98 to work with 1.5GB of RAM? I thought that Win9x was very finicky with the amount of RAM it uses.

Just took apart my rig with p4 3ghz, 2x256mb ddr, radeon 9800 pro and intel d865glc. Motherboard needs to be recapped. Vrm area seems fine, but have swollen ones down near sata connectors and front panel has always connected headphones (in xp) even when motherboard does not have even cable plugged in.
Im always having trouble using agp cards with external power connector. Glad to know I´m not the only one

I get offers to use cases quite often, but they are a pain to work with. Takes 3x the time and they take up a lot of space.
I'm using a Socket 775 Pentium 4 (3.4 GHz HT) and Windows XP for my "vintage" or "retro" games. Why? Because so many older games are available on GOG.com for a reasonable price. Unfortunately, most of them have been "retooled" to run under SCUMMVM with a minimum OS requirement of Windows XP. Steam games are not really an option since they dropped support for Win XP.
If only GOG.com would include the ORIGINAL installation files with the purchase of an older game...
Years ago I ran a P4 2.8ghz Northwood, with 2GB ram and a 6800 GT running Windows XP. It struggled in a few games but played many of them pretty well.
When I was updating the system I was trying to get an ASRock motherboard (all I could find was used), but each time the sellers on eBay sent me the wrong board, 2 of which was broken. So I just ended up using the same motherboard that came with the HP D530 SFF and I slapped it into an Antec three hundred case (not to be mistaken with the three hundred two case). I did this mainly to get away from the SFF case and it's PSU (that likes to go boom). Plus the 6800 GT wouldn't fit in the stock case.
If you are looking for a cheap but solid Pentium 4 platform with the 865 chipset, i suggest you get an HP D530 SFF pc! "But that's a low profile pc, i want to be able to use full sized graphics cards!!" and i would say yes, i know, but hear me out! The mobo inside these computers use the standard micro atx platform, so you can put it into a regular tower case no problem! Yes you won't have the I/O shield, but if that doesn't matter to you, you can build an awesome P4 pc with this board like i did! I have a P4 3Ghz with 512mb and a good cooler on it and it works fine! And the Geforce FX is great for Win98 gaming! I know this video is 4 years old, but it is still relevant, and maby Phil can show off a build using one of these motherboards! The early ones use bad caps, but the later ones use good quality caps!
Just for reference, after testing a lot of 478 motherboards, I can tell you that the best cheap board for 478 is this P4i65G, mine is running a prescott 3.0 @3.7ghz with ddr 500 memory, it works really good but the vrm really gets hot so I added littles heatsinks and its way better, just a really solid motherboard!

I really liked this video. I was honestly getting tired of all the cheap AlieX stuff you've been reviewing lately where every video was about some generic motherboard or CPU cooler or whatever, and even in build videos you'd use parts that are mostly from Aliexpress. Seeing this video that had none of that was nice, it's more like the content you used to make back when I started watching your videos in 2017.
When i was a kid, my ,,dream machine" was a Pentium 4 3.0 Ghz with GeForce 6600GT, that i never built unfortunately. Now an i5 8400 and RTX 2060 blast the fps out of my games. :D
Recently came across an LGA775 board with AGP and official support for Windows 98 and it seems to work well, now I just need to find the right graphics card, might look at one of the quadro cards you mentioned here. Thanks!
You could make it super overkill with a core 2 duo, or efficient with a core2 based single core celeron

I just pulled my old Pentium 4 3.2 GHz machine out of storage and it works fine, it has a Geforce 5950 so was wondering if I could actually put Windows 98 on it. It's been a long time since I used that OS and wanted to play around with it. era faithful parts are so expensive so if I can get it working on the machine I have that would be awesome.
i have a asus p4p800s...845 chipset ...p4 2.0....512mb 400mhz and a fx 5200 128mb agp for win 98 se.. no issues with usb or using sata and the ide together....very stable and fast
