Building a Better Windows 98 PC! The Megaluminum Monster

  • In 2019 we put together the Lazy Green Giant: a Win98 Pentium III computer with Voodoo 3 and Aureal Vortex 2 cards. Can't say I was ever 100% satisfied with it so it's time for a rebuild! Now with a SCSI2SD hard disk replacement, 360k floppy drive, and dual sound cards. AWE yeah.

I still wish to find a Compaq Deskpro EN with a Pentium 3 processor so I can slap a GeForce FX 5500 inside it as they are great retro pc graphics cards for running Windows 95/98 pc games from 1997-2002.

    • @GiSWiG
      @GiSWiG 4 года назад +5

      @@GeckonCZ But the polling is so fast that it is not noticeable. The only thing that I can think of is in an old server room. KVM switches using PS/2 are still around because replacing them is pretty expensive. Besides, seeing that most servers are virtual anyway, there is little need for a keyboard, mouse and monitor except during setup of the host hardware. IDK for sure, I've setup virtual servers but never setup the host hardware.

    • @GeckonCZ
      @GeckonCZ 4 года назад +5

      @@GiSWiG Polling will never be as fast as hardware interrupt. But yeah, unless you actually measure it, the delay won't be noticeable at all in most situations. PS/2 keyboard will however be more reliable, the USB stack can and sometimes tends to crash, which will render your USB peripherals unusable. But that's only relevant in the server environment really. And even there it matters less and less, thanks to virtualization and other factors. Oh and then there is also the placebo effect :)

      @@cutchyacokov No, the later one did not have the removable mobo tray, but it did have a better fan configuration allowing for 120mm intake/output. To be honest, I'm not really sure which model variant had which features... as Lian Li had a ton of slightly different configs / variations all under the "PC-60" umbrella. I purchased approximately 6-8 of them back in the early/mid 00s either for personal or client builds and probably wound up with 3-4 different variations. But the one I have left in my parts pile today is a fixed mobo tray with 120mm fan mounts... and the one with the removable mobo tray used 80mm or 92mm or one of those smaller sizes.
