I was a graphic designer at IBM at that time. They provided me with an “Intellistation” of the same vintage, I had some screaming graphics cards in it, tons of ram, and the IT dept. later replaced the main chip every time there was a budget, before finally decommissioning the machine. No Ethernet at IBM then, it had Token RIng card, and kept designs on Iomega Zip disks per corporate compliance, but that later changed to a windows network drive. Lotus Notes, Lotus 123, Illustrator and Photoshop were my daily routine. All IBM machines of this vintage are tanks. We used to have them render videos for days with no crashes. Good times.
The IBM NetVista series was GARBAGE regardless of what was under the hood. The hard drive bracket liked to poke holes in the ribbon cables unless you folded it just right, and they just generally had poor build quality all around. I had to support a school network with over 200 of these machines spread over 3 campuses. I lost track of how many I dumpstered after stripping them of usable parts. They were junk when new and, by the time I inherited them, were on their last legs.

I have a NetVista like this, except a bit earlier model, with Pentium III 933 MHz. RIVA TNT 2 Ultra for the graphics, Sound Blaster Live! for the sound (and the SoundMAX stuff disabled from the BIOS). With the monitor stand removed, and small blue TEAC speakers, it almost looks like an AIO, it’s actually pretty sweet! Keyboard is Model M, for mouse I found an old two-button IBM mouse (that is appropriately rectangular, fits great with the Model M, both in color and design).
Hi Clint, I'm a long term watcher, and love your stuff. I wanted to let you know that I work for a Data Processing site in Plymouth UK, for the national mail carrier. We used those NetVista machines for several years before our I.T. company was forced to upgrade our systems. It turned out that for the last two years we were using NetVista computers, the I.T. company had to source parts on the internet second hand whenever they broke. We ended up getting Lenovo machines as replacements running Windows 7. Our Data Processing site uses about 150 computers, and every one of the was NetVista's for about five years.
Channels like LGR, Techmoan, Modern Vintage Gamer, The 8 bit guy, and tech connections have made me start collecting 90s stuff I grew up on. The nostalgia has fascinated people around me and they really like it.

The best build in the game does not take too long to learn. By going through the steps listed in this guide, you will be able to take the next steps in your build. You will be able to create the following build which will take anywhere from a half hour to 45 minutes of practice. You can use any style of build that provides more variety in play. There are many other styles of build, but these will come into being when you get older. Your first style will be to play the game on your smartphone. This starts with your phone. In this step you need to pick the easiest mobile device you have to develop the game. You will probably start with a laptop or tablet. This will be similar to in the following sections, the most important thing you will want to do. This is going to be your phone, not your iPad. You may have to install Flash on your phone either of your most recent devices. You will need your iPod and your other iPod touch. This is how you build an iPhone. Step 1 - Setup the iPhone Before you start building the iPhone, you will need to set up your device or your phone. When building your iPhone, you will need: A Bluetooth enabled
Not only excellent videos but an excellent guy too! Thank you very much for caring, Clint. From a UK doctor. PS We have a "thing" here in the UK where people stand on their doorsteps at 8pm on a Thursday to "applaud the NHS". Really, I'm not kidding! It's both very creepy and most insulting! It seems that for many showing the neighbors how "good" you are is more important than actually doing good! Thank you again for genuinely caring, and of course for your great videos. RMC too, of course!
How many memories that machine evokes in me. My dad bought it in 2003 for me and my sisters. It was my first computer and aroused in me an interest in games and computers. We used it until 2009, and I used the keyboard we got with it until 3 months ago. Unfortunately, the keyboard started to confuse my letters, I tried to fix it but I couldn't. I'm glad you made a video for this computer. This comment was written before I watched the video. I hope it will be a good video, and I'm glad to follow you on RUclips for so many years. I wish you happiness and peace, just as you made my day beautiful. Greetings from Macedonia, your loyal viewer Nikola. P.S. I hope you read this comment.
I still don't know anything about old computers outside of this channel(heck I hardly anything about new ones tbh), and I really have no interest in collecting them or for them. But even then, your videos are such a blast to watch. Always fun, informative, and just an all around good time. A definite day brightener. A pick me up, if you would. You bring such a passion and joy that I always enjoy your videos. I'm looking forward to more and more blurbs as well! Thanks for your hard work in getting these out. I worked in the IT department at a Mid-Atlantic bank that had these style NetVistas at the customer service desks, all running OS/2 Warp. When they merged with another bank we had to upgrade the software image on all the machines at 300 branches. We used IBM's wonderful (at the time) SID process to have the branch employees reimage all the machines. One machine in each branch was the SID server with the master image, and each workstation had a customized SID boot disk. On one Saturday we had the employees boot the workstations off the SID boot diskette which downloaded the Warp installation from the server and installed it. The process worked surprisingly well.

I think he likes swapping cards and making as many configurations as possible just to play with it. That's the impression I get from him. To him none of these systems are permanent and subject to change to what he desires that day.
I got a set of systems for different eras, but for each I have more compatible parts. And sometimes the urge to test them all overcomes me. That is the moment when I want to test 6 CPUs, stock and with 2-3 OC settings in about 40 games, programs and benchmarks. Yes, that takes about a week of pure testing. And I mean only the testing, not dialing in the oc or stuff like sleeping or eating.

Played so much Half-Life, Counter-Strike and Doom on it, Thank you so much for reminding me of that part of my childhood!
Retromancave is a great channel. Love Neil's stuff.
Yes, I did enjoy this thoroughly. I'd love to watch a second part where you upgrade the video and especially the sound card.
Love IBM machines, incredible and indestructible!
As the shipping company proved.
I've always been in love with these old computers that use vertical cases and you put monitors on top of them.
#LoveIBM
i absolutely love your intro. the hand flick coupled with “greetings” is so soothing. love your work. cheers
I love it when he says, "Welcome to an LGR thing."
God... Absolutely love this late 90s, early 2000s chassis aesthetic.
20:14 Gotye used to be big... now he's somebody we used to know...
Criminally underrated comment
You didn't have to stoop so low.
Ah, this friday was blessed by half an hour of bliss.
Age of Empires I and II...those sweet memories.

CHOPPER?!
Nice! good job on the refurb Neil RMC :)
I always loved the designs of these modern (okay, modern 20 years ago) IBM desktops. Clean, straight-edged, and classy.
Channels like LGR, Techmoan, Modern Vintage Gamer, The 8 bit guy, and tech connections have made me start collecting 90s stuff I grew up on. The nostalgia has fascinated people around me and they really like it.
Any time I hear Aureal Vortex mentioned, my brain just turns it into Aaahh!!! Real Vortex
Your favorites playlist is fresh AF. you watch any wwe ytp? Only way to watch lol subscribed :)
Aureal Monsters when
I’ve got an XP era NetVista. It’s this but in Thinkpad black. Lovely machines.
“we should now have midi files to play with, really we only need one” ... and it was not CANYON.MID!?
It was PASSPORT.MID, which was the CANYON.MID of the 32-bit era. I don't believe CANYON actually shipped with Windows 9x releases, only Windows 3.x ones.
@@bitwize But it did ship with 9x (except Windows ME, which has other MIDI files).
john cena midi legit not converted
When I entered IBM Brazil back on 2001 I replaced a lot of those motherboards dues bad caps Thanks for remembering this time !!!
Yeah i worked in IBM call centre in 2001 these were atrocious to support.
6:40 when I ship computers to anywhere else but the US, I always flip the switch to 230. Running 120v on the 230 setting will not damage anything, but the other way around...
When the machine is retro, but new enough to have a PSU that autodetects.
I'm in England, thank you SO MUCH for doing this with a charity supporting the NHS at such a critical time! ❤️
Step 1 - Setup the iPhone
Before you start building the iPhone, you will need to set up your device or your phone. When building your iPhone, you will need:
A Bluetooth enabled
Isn't the NHS already unsustainably bloated with public funds?
Ah man, I love it so much when I find out that RUclipsrs with similar channels actually like each other
Not only excellent videos but an excellent guy too!
Thank you very much for caring, Clint.
From a UK doctor.
PS
We have a "thing" here in the UK where people stand on their doorsteps at 8pm on a Thursday to "applaud the NHS". Really, I'm not kidding!
It's both very creepy and most insulting! It seems that for many showing the neighbors how "good" you are is more important than actually doing good!
Thank you again for genuinely caring, and of course for your great videos.
RMC too, of course!
when 8 seconds pass and i haven’t heard “Grëëtings” yet 😐
On this old computer, bootup time to the custom LGR themed Windows start sound is quite longer than 8 seconds.
Ah, LGR. The best way to get knowledge for my computer career while having breakfast.
Haha yeah, beats an A+ cert video for sure.
The best part of LGR is there's always gonna be a good amount of content you have never seen but will at some point enjoy regardless.

A lot of us really appreciate it.
Thanks for supporting the NHS, this Brit is grateful
This is so cool! Great that you support eachother.
The sound effects thing reminds me of when I made my custom Windows sound clips with my own voice. It actually annoyed the living hell out of my sisters whenever they'd ask me to borrow my laptop, lol.
It reminds me of when I changed my laptop's startup sound to Psychosocial by Slipknot when I was 12.
Legends, both you and Neil, how funny with the sounds Haha.
Thank you for buying this to help support our NHS
Thank you for donating
Im a brit, so it’s appreciated
Thanks for supporting my local NHS. I'm currently waiting for a bone marrow biopsy, another test to see if my course of treatment worked AND a couple of wisdom teeth removals. Hopefully with your help it'll speed up these appointments as they've all been delayed due to "the event". Cheers :)
I want a LGR-Soundboard so bad :(
[LGR laugh #3]
"Will it run Duke 3D?"
"Mmmmmm"
"woodgrain"
"Duke's Mayonnaise"
fantastic content lately. LGR is awesome
24:08 - Holy cow, there's a sound I never thought I'd hear again. I once had that happen while trying to start Unreal as a kid, and it scared the shit out of me. It had never played before, and mysteriously never played again. It made me somewhat leery of starting the game for a while.
This type of thing (Games you know like the back of your hand suddenly doing strange things they've never done before) was the subject of many nightmares back then, so for years It was one of those "Did that actually happen?" types of memories. It's neat to see it happen here, and know why (Thanks to Daemonlord X's comment)
That's how creepypasta gets written lmao
What is that sound called?
Well, you're now up there with Banksy! (He donated a piece of art to my local hospital; your kind donation will obviously go for charitable side issues such as charitable support as the NHS itself isn't a charity but rather fully paid by the UK tax payer) awesome stuff (and this is from someone who had to watch his grandad pass a few weeks ago from COVID-19 and the NHS staff that treated him were amazing apparently).
I remember thinking that 64mb of graphics memory was insane at that time. Now we’re pushing 8gb on average
Just watching you tinker around with these is just so much fun to watch!
Basically every school had these in the late 90s. I remember them well.
I had one of these as my first PC of my own, freshman yr in college. Mine had a P3-733 and 98 I think. Loaded it full of ram, put XP, an ATI Rage (PCI) something, and A SB Audigy in it. Was a very respectable machine after that! Miss that Audigy card. Thing sounded phenomenal.
reminds me of when I used to play Need For Speed: Underground with a Geforce MX440...
I remember buying a 16 bit soundblaster for my Aptiva (Pentium 3 800MHz) and getting amazed by how much better Duke3d sounded, especially the intro since i spent a couple of thousands houres on Build, making maps :D
8:16 "oh Neil, you're a dork!" 🤣🤣🤣🤣
Dude. You do not know how long I've been living with my laptop booting from the LAN first. Thanks to you I've sorted it. This video has saved me hours of my life. I'm gonna use those hours having fun. Woohoo!
when i started working for my company as an it-technician, i saw that they were about to throw out one of these. so i took it home with me and rebuilt my current pc into it
Did you have to do much alteration, like drilling motherboard mounting holes or anything?
@@ZipplyZane not really, the motherboard actually fit perfect. i had to drill 2 new holes for the psu though and make the hole for the motherboard ports a little bit bigger
Definitely good enough for a 'real' LGR video. That said, I also love the Blerbs. Worryingly. Blerbyingly.
26:55 That "GOOOOO" Always sounded so over the top when you were in a 356 crawling off the line :D.
"Duke Nukem time" .... it is amazing how you can imitate Duke Nukem's voice.
I always find your video's so relaxing. Watching after a long day at work to wind down! This PC is also very similar to what i used to have in the early 2000's. It had XP on it though.
0:10 well the box is in good shape at least
for $100 shipping, you would think it would be packed better
@@cheesetoast99 you don't order a whole lot if stuff from eBay, do you?
Edit: and as a guy who does a lot of shipping, they werent making any money off shipping. That would be well over $100 using USPS, and right around $100 to ship fedex ground. Shipping is fucking EXPENSIVE.
Esit: this us why I no longer sell very heavy and large things. The work for the shipping negates value
Great vid as always, and thank for your charitable donation
LGR calling RMC a dork (in a kind way)... Yeap, made my day... Cheers
Clint , I’ve been watching you for a really long time and this video has a different vibe to your usual style and I really like it
Ah, the time of cozyness and jazzy mood has come.
So the first thing i thought of when you said “Bombastic Fiddle-Faddle” was the caramel popcorn snack food but mixed with Pop Rocks 😆
But seriously, I so want an actual game called “Bombastic Fiddle-Faddle” 😄
These are definitely my favorite kind of videos. Nice touch.
When you have an extra Win98 PC...
Make one a Voodoo Glide API box.
The other a Geforce 6800 Ultra rig.
So you never have to swap cards.
I love your mousepad dude!
23:32
L E T S R O C K
The speakers transmit good bass!
=
I have a 32MB TNT2 Vanta and this is one of my favorite retro cards (because it was cheap but it’s very possible to play Q1, Q2 and Q3 in 640x480) =)
The story about performance problems in "Need for Speed" is reminiscent of "Unreal Gold" - if your processor does not have a lot of Hz - it will slow down on any video card = (.
At first it seemed to me that this video was somewhat stupid and laid-back, but still this old IBM returned your nostalgic memories, and that's good! =)))
Thanks so much for the video !!!
BIOS may have also been configured to power on when plugged in to the socket (power on power fail)
That would make some sense, with the network boot being enabled.
I might be wrong, but my netvistas and aptivas are not configured to power on when plugged in. They do power up for a few seconds as some sort of power check, but they don't start afterwards.
Y'know, the specs are just a little under the minimum requirements for it, but every time you said "Net Vista" I couldn't help but think it'd be pretty funny to see this machine trying to run Windows Vista Basic or something
