Kayaking the Canadian Amazon | Paddle Tales

- Contrary to popular belief, flatwater kayaking can be as interesting as whitewater kayaking. This is especially true on Big Creek in Southern Ontario's Norfolk County. Big Creek is rightly called the Canadian Amazon as it winds its way through thick forest, while presenting paddlers with a natural obstacle course of fallen trees. Practice your limbo skills before you kayak on Big Creek, because this is a recreational kayak adventure like nothing else.

Jaime from Grand Experiences was fabulous! Was an incredible experience that the whole family could enjoy.
Stunning and professional production.
Who says flatwater is boring?
Not me!
I might have a few years back...but I've changed my tune ;)
We paddle Big Creek for many years and it's probably our favorite place for a longer paddle. Great video, thanks for sharing.
You're lucky to have that run close by! Cheers.
Ken... you rock!
I love creek travel and this one looks amazing. It reminds me a little of the battle river in Alberta.
Thank you for a great video! We are so lucky to have this in our backyard - this is the actual creek that did inspire our love of kayaking! My favourite place.
Glad you enjoyed it! You are definitely very lucky to have that creek in your backyard. What a cool place.
Nice.. i did Big Creek in my canoe about 8 years ago...very nice paddle. I put in at Norfolk concession rd. 3 (at the launch) and had a pretty unobstructed paddle down to long point rd. where my wife met me with our pickup and loaded up and stayed at a cottage rental on Long point beach. What a nice paddle and that creek so full of Carolinian trees and plants! Loved it.
Nice! It really is a gem!
Was there today for the first time with Grand Experiences - what an amazing and wonderous place - hard to believe we have these hidden treasures in Ontario!
I couldn't agree more! I was totally taken by surprise too!
That stretch of Big Creek is loaded with geocaches, all the way from the 6th Concession put-in, past Port Royal, almost to the causeway. So you can combine two activities here.
very cool!
Ken, you sure do make this kayaking thing look and sound amazing! Ill be getting my first kayak the first weekend of may 2022 and i cant wait to feel what u feel on these trips!
Thanks for the video....great stuff and beautiful views
Thanks for this Ken. Hopefully the border will be reopened next spring so I can make the trek from Buffalo to try this creek out.
I hope so too!
This is one of my favorite spots as well. There's also an Eagle nest on Black Creek, they're really making a comeback lately.
Good to see the eagles coming back. Same thing is happening up here on the Ottawa River.
Got my wife the Pungo today! It inspire her to see you using one ;) just waiting for the Dagger Axis and we are off to Canadian adventures this summer!
Nice! Have a great summer of paddling!
😸👍
Is it possible to paddle there on an inflatable kayak? 😅 Mine is inflatable and I wanna take it there so bad!
Nice video which kayak were you using? Wilderness systems?
Yup. It's called the Pungo. It's been one of the top selling sit-inside recreational kayaks for many years. I think I paddled my first one about 12 years ago.
That was so good. 👍I've been trying to buy a Pungo since April. What's your opinion on them?
Get a Jackson Journey instead
You can't go wrong with a Pungo really, they're a solid starter boat. Plus, they tend to hold their value if/when you decide to upgrade to something new.
@PaddleTV Thank you. It's good to know that from someone who is as accomplished as you. 👍🙂
When is the best time to paddle this? How's mid May before the bugs come out?
Chances are the water will be too high in May. This is definitely a low-water run! The fallen wood would make it extremely dangerous in higher water. July-October is probably best.
@@PaddleTV thank you for your input, much appreciated. We're doing both May (bottom half) and July, a few experienced paddleboarders. I get conflicting information about best season, based on my research. I'll monitor the conditions, thaw/weather etc; thanks a million.
Where did you put in? We did this a month ago and it was quite the obstacle course.
I'll be honest... I don't remember where we put-in. I was following someone and not paying attention to where I was going. All of a sudden we were there. :)
Put in at Rd 3 for a more open paddle
