    Kiwi here, watched the game live in a little NZ country pub at 8am. Lots of rugby mum and dads having the buffet breakfast and a quiet sneaky beer. The atmosphere looked amazing over there and our punters enjoyed Italys last try they never gave up. But they were isolating themselves and not committing to tackles throughout. Good to see the ABs use the breadth and depth of their talent and put their training to good use because you need to employ both talent and tactics on the day. Those Portugal players were gonna party no matter who won haha

    Hi Tim. Big fan.
    But as an Irishman, there was no surprise in that match tonight.
    Most of us in Ireland have not been taking NZ for granted in the slightest. One off night in Twickenham against an all-firing SA team did nothing to fool most of us in Ireland about what we could face in the QF if we get there.
    So I don’t think it's accurate to suggest that tonight's result serves as a wake up call. Keen rugby fans never dismissed this NZ team.
    If it's an IRE v NZ quarter final, it's a toss up, and that was also true before tonight's performance.

    Tim, not at all surprised with this result although very shocked at Italys performance. As an Irish fan following the NZ rugby commentators since Ireland won the series in NZ June 2022, there has been a lot of introspective debate in NZ on how to get their team back to compete at the highest level. On a personal level, I really do hope that Ireland meet NZ in the QF (assuming we get through the Scotland test). This would be a great game of rugby where the stakes have never been so high for both teams. IRL never past QF and equally NZ will be tested dealing with the most cohesive side in the competition (with an AB winning mentality).

      How are they “back”? They pumped a team who by your own admission gave up after 18 minutes. The reality is is that they got their pants pulled down and their arses smacked by the Boks. Then got overrun and overpowered by a team who are rated as favourites for the cup. In the quarters they’ll face a team who have had their number since 2016.

      That was harsh and not very fair. As an Irishman I'll say it's ridiculous to say we have had their number since 2016, not to take away from our series win in NZ, but we got hammered by them in the most important game of all in that period the 2019 QF. This Irish team is in a different place than then, so I'm not expecting a repeat hammering should we make the QF versus them, we still have to get through Scotland, but I'm expecting a tough hard to call game.

    Its one thing beating Italy when Italy exerted no pressure of any kind, its an entirely different game when NZ play Ireland, SA or France. There are only four teams in this world cup, as usual. NZ would have to be 4th out of those. On a good day the AB's will beat any team. But they dont have as many good days as they used to. Frances threat is unfortunately blunted by injury, which could count them out. I hope the AB's prove me wrong, but I think even a bunch of players as talented as these NZers cannot overcome the handicap of their second rate coach.

    • @racketman2u
      @racketman2u 9 месяцев назад

      have to agree, there's no Plan B like in the Henry days when he instilled some intelligence on the field in the shape of guys like Carter and McCaw. We still have the talent, but the coaching is shite. The Abs will always be dangerous when the structure of a game breaks apart, but well-drilled sides like Ireland don't do that. England is in a similar position to NZ, only slightly ahead, on their way back from a coaching disaster.

    The only positive I can take from that as an Irishman is NZ don't get to have decent prep games leading into the QF (that is IF we get to play them, not assuming anything versus Scotland), but it's clutching at straws.
    I didn't get to see the game as I'm in Asia, but no one in the 6N beats Italy by this type of margin, a hammering for Italy in the 6N is like a 30-40 point margin, this was nearly an 80 point margin 😲.
    Anyway well done NZ, the ultimate punishers still if a team shows them any weakness.
    Hope Italy can bounce back from this and at least don't get hammered by France.

His comment that the ABs rack up big scores against average opposition is bang on though but isn't that what good teams do? The overall winning percentage of 77+% infers they also beat good teams far more regularly than not aswell though.They have struggled defensively for some patchy results more recently and France, Ireland and SA would be favorites with the bookies, England and Wales are building flying under the radar a bit. I'm a kiwi so I'll be backing the underdog ABs.
