  • So I wanted to upgrade the brakes on my Magna Ralliart, only to discover that you simply can't buy some of the bits any more. Nobody makes them! So today we're working out what fits, and what we need to do to get it all working properly. #motoringbox

    Just a reminder that all product links are in the video description, but here's a summary:
    *Front rotors:* RDA RDA7625D
    *Front pads:* EBC Ultimax2 - DP0954
    *Rear rotors:* RDA RDA7624D
    *Rear pads:* RDA GP MAX - MIT-RDB1231-105
    TLDR: You need to use Magna AWD Pads and Rotors, with the rear rotors needing a spacer.

    A quick note for the future - always ring around any "makerspaces" near to you - some of them have waterjet cutting tables, you could get a set of custom spacers made like that for little more than the cost of a big enough sheet of alloy to fit 4 on it. Also a donation to the makerspace to help keep it going.

    Great video, I would paint it, there are plenty of Magnas with paint peel but few with perfect paint. The world of older cars can be strange at times, anything European, Korean and American you usually can get thanks to multiple OEs still making parts and the various websites selling them in their respective continents. Japanese and Australian cars can be ok to source parts but the rare and unusual ones seem to be the hardest and require engineering solutions (like your spacer) to make what is available fit. Normally it’s the little parts that are the hardest to source such as hoses and connectors.

    Not sure if it would have worked in your case but for us AU owners who have put territory rear brakes on we spaced the rear calipers 3mm using washers. It sets the caliper back to suit the disc.

  • @johnvirus01
    @johnvirus01 Год назад +2

    380 brakes wont work on the rear, but the benefit of using the awd magna setup(as factory ralliart does) means you have waaay more pad and rotor options as they are also used on the evo 5,EC5A/W legnum and galant and cj lancer ralliart(as well as other cars mitsubishi pulled these out of the parts bin for). the official stats from MMAL state the front as a 26% increase for the front and 35% on the rear in braking efficiency.(also sean, i have a factory bulletin from mmal with official stats regarding the changes to the ralliart)
    Unfortunately, these factory rotors have been unobtanium for years. DBA do have a part number, but they are unable to be ordered from them and we believe mitsubishi may have put a block on DBA selling them. All you need now is a set of braided brake lines(HEL ones for a legnum/galant will work) to top it all off.
    Also to anyone mentioning that its dangerous running this spacer, all mitsubishi did is to make the hat of the rotor 3.7mm larger. Effectively it has that spacer homologated and built in from factory.

    • @wiked3801
      @wiked3801 Год назад

      And there it is.... 3.7 mm difference between the hat size.

    I can say that my dented, scratched, stone-chipped car (I put a few on there myself while the thing was off the road being used primarily for storage) is a nice thing to have as a daily driver, especially when my 4 year old is a bit overzealous opening my wife's car door into mine. Not having to worry about the exterior condition is a nice thing. However, having an 'enthusiast' car that looks scrappy tends to be looked on less than favourably. Dilemmas

    Great video on the brakes Sean. I still thought you'd be able to pick up the rear rotors like you can on Fords or Holdens.
    In regards to your question on the paintwork, I'd say do a closed door respray. A lot of the prep work you can do yourself. Have a chat to a spraypainter around your area and they'll tell you what you can do so it wont cost you an arm or a leg. Remember that prices have gone up on paint & sundries. If you're wondering what paint system to use, I recommend Baslac which is made by BASF. The results will astonish you, if painted well. Just look at the smash repair places & see if they use it.

    Very nice content. I'm a viewer from the Netherlands who currently owns an American version Mitsubishi diamante VRX from 2002, coincidentally black. I can get some parts for it here in Europe when searching by part numbers, but some parts are truly unique to the diamante/magna platform, like the rear discs indeed, had those shipped from the USA! I am however looking for a vrx bodykit from Australia as that market had a one off kit! A ralliart bodykit is out the question as they are so rare...

    Nice video Sean, good information and a nice way of getting our struggles out there. The reason for the difference is that not many manufacturers made the Ralliart rear hats the depth they are meant to be and labelled and sold them as such.
    The rotors you had to try and put on your car are the AWD rear rotors which have the taller hat. A lot of people and manufacturers have gotten the hat depth mixed up over time. They just see the size and go, oh yep that's the one and order them and they don't fit.
    Hopper stoppers do make a spacer like yours so you can convert to AWD rear rotors (as nobody makes the correct Ralliart ones anymore), OR... upgrade to EVO 7-9 brakes all round like I and many other magna owners have done. Highly recommend you look in to look in to this if you don't care about keeping it 100% pure, it may also be cheaper than buying all those spacers :)

    I personally would like to see it painted. To me, although mechanically sound, appearance wise to me, it would still seem to be a half finished and to leave it "patina" would not do the restoration of this car justice.
    If it was a 40's, 50's, 60,s car, with a clear coat over it, you could maybe get away with this.
    But this car is more of a modern classic, and I feel it needs to be finished by being painted.
    Perhaps, if someone with a Paint Shop business who maybe watching this channel, may like to help you out, in exchange for some extra publicity?
    I started watching this channel because of this project and my interest to see how the Magna progressed.

I know it’s a niche thing but fuck me, there will be owners who will appreciate that so much. To touch on your question about the paint, hands down get it resprayed. I know you probably won’t get a full ROI on it but man, it’ll be so sick driving around in that car in it’s prime. You’ve put so much work into it already, why not go balls deep 😂. Gotta also say that the drop in of that blue screen, gold, gave me a chuckle, as an IT guy, seeing that thrown in haha. Honestly though, keep up the great work, I know the Magna has been a bit of a ballache and you’d rather go back to the Falcons but as a Falcon tragic myself, I’m hooked onto each step of this car. You can’t wait to get back to Falcons! Wash your mouth out!😂😂 Paint it of course. Great solution on the brakes.

    Side note: I make brackets that allow you to fit S550 mustang 6pot brembos to b series falcon. I'm sure you could fit a brembo kit from a evo or something onto this? Its handy if the stud pattern is the same though.

    When I was working in the Parts Department at my local Mitsubishi dealership, there were "Kangaroo Paw" brake parts available. I'd also suggest noting what the genuine Mitsubishi Ralliart OEM part numbers are, then doing a Google search. "Fits Ralliart" isn't always accurate.
