  • Here is my review of the Big Agnes Tiger Wall UL2 tent after travelling over 2750miles and spending over 200 nights on both the Great Glen Way & Pacific Crest Trail sleeping in it. This tent has now been through the heat of the Californian desert, the rain in Washington & heavy snow in Oregon. I hope this video is useful if it is a tent you are interested in and need to see how it has really held up under these different conditions.

    Just wanted to let people know that the Tiger Wall tents can be set up using just the rain fly and poles. This is the best way to set up in the rain, and then you can just duck under there to set up the tent body so it does not get soaked.

    the big advantage I see in a two wall tent is being able to set it up and watch the night sky with out being eaten to death by mosquitoes. never know when a nice meteor shower is going to hit while one is out and about.

      So right Eric !!!!
      I like the versatility of it to wall tent 😄
      And there are double wall tents out there that you can put the fly up first then get in and put the body up.
      I am currently considering Tarp tents " StratoSpire Li "
      As my next tent.my BA has been patched and repaired many times over 20 some
      years... oddly it's still functional!!!! But only a single door 🤔
      Cheers !!

    Fun vid, of course. When it's "pouring it down", you can set your tent poles up first in the footprint, then the fly second (skip the crosspole ends). Crawl under, take a breath, then clip up the body. I go top down and back to front; make sure clip the body to the crossbar before attaching the back fly end at the top. You'll have to get wet again, go outside, set the corners, the front fly top to the crossbar and the rest of the stakes. Try it, you'll like it:)

      Very true, It does take some practice but will keep the tent body dry when setting up in a rainstorm.
      I have the Agnes Copper Spur HV UL2, very similar although slightly heavier model.

    I use the DUPLEX. The condensation is annoying. Never had to use a ground sheet. Keep my very dry. A little larger then some tent sites so I agree on the size issue. And trying set up on rocky ground was tough. But, I will continue this season with it.

    Great follow up review Mary! I, too, have this tent and was happy to hear you insights on what this tent is capable of. While I do wish I got the Duplex as well, I couldn’t justify the cost for my limited use. The Tigerwall seemed to be the wiser choice, and your experience confirms it. Regarding the corner stakes, what I did was to replace them with longer ones so that the tent body guy lines are set lower while the fly guy lines would sit several inches higher. I’ve not tried it in heavy rain, but perhaps this is a solution? Lastly, I’m amazed how you managed to live with those zippers on the tent fly for over 200 nights! Ha ha! Thanks for the review! I just love your cheerful vibe!

    Nice review. I have the BA Copper Spur tent in a 3p that I use with my husband. It performs so well in high wind with all guylines attached (many manufacturers don't include those guylines attached) and that 360° view is pretty nice! FYI, the extra guylines with tensioners do not require additional stakes. Big Agnes has designed them to be attached to the center stakes at the foot and head. I have also found that treating my tent with permethrin keeps insects off it. I wonder if that would have repelled the ants or deterred mice. Probably not the rodents; those little buggers are relentless! For a thruhike, I'd imagine you would need to reapply several times, however. Mary, I truly enjoyed your vlog and hope to watch another thruhike soon! I met you briefly in Medford and it was then I learned about your vlog. Your never-ending positivity and "Good morning" was infectious! Thanks for your efforts and dedication to your craft.

    Depending on where you'd want to use it, I would not recommend the Z-packs tents. The floating bathtub is not very windproof and as soon as you accidentally press on it during your sleep the bathtub will end up a bit outside of the rainfly, causing rain to get in in bad weather conditions. Dry climates yes, rainy / humid climates no. Single wall tents are in general not very suitable for rainy / humid climates. So in my opinion you get far more for your money with Big Agnes as they are far more allround, even though weighing more.
    Very good and valuable tip on the footprint not being waterproof. I'll look for a better one when I'm going to purchase this tent. Thank you for the great review!

    Best tent hack...Tyvek custom sheet. Puncture resistant, water proof, super light and cheap. And you can cut it and sew it in any shape if you have machine, or just cut and lay it down and forget about it.

  • @davidhale1568
    @davidhale1568 4 года назад +1

    Some thoughts. A Tyvek ground sheet works much better than a nylon one approx 90 grams. I bought the copper spur UL back from the US a few years back a lot cheeper at REI than the UK. It seems to be better at free standing than the tiger wall, handy as the ground was rock hard when I was cycling back from Gibralter to the UK. Also its just about possible to put the inner up or down from the inside if raining. For back packing I tend to use one of Henry Shires tarp tents. Next weeks trip is from Llangollen over the Berwyns, the Arrans ,Cadair Idris and finish at Fairborn near Barmouth its a great route worth a look and not as far to go as the pct. Hopefully Scotland will be open soon.

    I have the same tent. I came to the same conclusion you did about needing extra stakes, which is a bit of a hassle - and extra weight. Thanks for sharing the information about the footprint and floor not being totally waterproof, I’ve never had to put that to the test but that is good to know. One issue which I don’t think you mentioned, is that when you open the rain fly when it is wet it drops right into the tent unless you very carefully grab it. That ends up getting the inside of the tent wet. I still think this is a really good tent and quite light for a double wall but I do think there are some design flaws that could use some attention. I am pondering picking up a different tent for this coming summer.

      Glad to hear about the floor not being waterproof. I was strongly considering this tent, but that's a deal breaker for me. Excellent review!! Happy trails everyone!

    Just found your channel. Really nice and honest review!! I can tell you definitely spent alot of time in this tent! You know your stuff! Thats crazy your guy line snapped! Windy! I almost purchased this tent. At the time i was trying to choose between it or the big agnes copper spur hv ul 1 tent (olive green) 2019 version. I figured a two man tent that weighs just under a one man was hard to beat! But i'm kinda glad i went with the copper spur instead. Its so far been a really awesome tent. Also part of the reason i chose it over the tiger wall was the structure and high volume. It has 4 legs aswell unlike the 3 legs with the tiger wall and fly creek tents, so it makes it really freestanding. Super easy to pitch, lightweight, breathable, i like the subdued olive green color and packs fairly small but i also do the same thing you do. I put my tent poles on the outside of my pack and tent body inside. Saves on pack space. Stakes are separate too on the outside mesh pocket on my pack. Although i did have to purchase my tents footprint separate i actually used my microsoft points to buy it on rei's website, so it cost me nothing lol. Was happy about that and they definitely save on the life of these tents! Big agnes makes some great tents! I am personally not yet sold on the trekking pole style single wall tents. I only use one trekking pole anyways and condensation is a big issue with those style tents. I prefer freestanding dome style tents. The Djedi tent by locus gear may be the only dyneema fabric single wall tent that i would be interested in but it costs and arm and a leg lol..So for now i will stick to what i got. Great review!! I do hope you do get the z-packs duplex tent at some point if its what you really want. Sub added. Stay safe! Hike on!!

      @@MarysOutdoorAdventures Yeah they are both great tents.! I noticed sierra designs also makes alot of brightly colored tents too but they are also nice quality. I prefer subdued colors. I think its great to see someone do an honest review of a tent whom has actually spent alot of time in it. Alot of tent reviews i see make it harder to gauge the longevity and or overall quality of a tent especially if they haven't really used it. Its still cool to see new gear reviews too, just sayin. You lived it! Spot on! Thanks for the reply and enjoy yourself out there! Be safe! Hike on!!

    Home sweet home! I used a Nemo 2p Hornet which is double-walled like your Tiger Wall and will never get a single wall tent because I like the view and the breezes when the Hornet is uncovered.

    Ive been thinking about this tent for a while, plus side is the room it offers which is swaying me, the only concerns are the pitching of the fly after as i have used my Hilleberg Akto for 20 years and i am used to pitching in one go, the other is the floor looks a bit thin although a Tyvek groundsheet or similar would help that problem. Great review Mary certainly will kelp me a lot.

    • @MarysOutdoorAdventures
      @MarysOutdoorAdventures  4 года назад +1

      So glad it helped Jimbo. It is so easy to pitch after a couple of practices! Yes the floor was thin, but I didn't have any problems thanks so the groundsheet.

    GOOD MORNING!
    Very good and detailed review of your big agnes tent! Thank you so much!
    I am also considering to buy a Tiger Wall UL 2.
    I own a MSR Hubba Hubba NX1, which is also a very good and popular single person tent.
    However, after spending some nights, i think it is too small for me.
    I am tall (194cm) and touching the inner tent on both ends, when i am lying in my sleeping bag on the mat.
    If it is getting windy, the inner tent touches and slaps at my head the whole night.
    And if it is getting rainy or damp, my sleeping bag gets also wet on both ends.
    Also there is almost no space left for my gear in the inner tent.
    This is totally fine in good weather conditions, but if it is getting worse, you wish to have more space in the interior.
    Unfortunately there are no single person tents for tall persons on the market afaik...
    Therefore i am considering to ugrade to a two person tent.

    • @MarysOutdoorAdventures
      @MarysOutdoorAdventures  4 года назад

      Thank you Franky! I would definitely recommend a 2 person tent for you regardless of brand - then at least you can sleep diagonally to prevent touching the sides!

    Fyi, using the “fly first” method of pitching in the rain will mitigate your issues when setting up during a downpour. If you purchased the foot print for this tent then it comes with the corner grommets which enables you to pitch “fly first”.

    Hi Mary! I have the same tent. Here's a tip: since you have the ground sheet that is meant for that tent it has the clips so you can actually set up the ground sheet, posts and the rain fly in the rain and then get under it and set up the rest!

    • @monicarandeen8698

    I actually have the inner for this tent (was an 'unrepairable' warranty that BA didn't want to repair for a customer but I managed to fix...) but I have the full TW2 Plat. I like the Plat but it kind of sucks for UK weather outside of summer - it sags after even the best pitch, rain or no rain. I think on both versions, having to use a double layer of ground sheet to protect from damp is a problem and the fly zip issues are quite frustrating too. I think this tent is probably a 7/10 for longer camping / hiking trips. Currently deciding if I will be taking it on the AT next year or if I can afford to invest in something else.

    Great review! I hiked the PCT last year too, bummer we never met! I had the Fly Creek UL2 and it was pretty great, although I didn't love the single front door entry. Sadly a bear recently ended that tent's life, so I've been trying to decide if I want to try a trekking pole tent setup or stick with another BA tent :)

      @@MarysOutdoorAdventures Yes! Thankfully it happened when me and my hiking buddy had decided to take a short side trail to a lake, so we weren't too close to camp. But it was a major bummer :( It was an established backcountry campground with bear boxes (and people around) too, and we had even stashed all our smelly stuff, so I think this particular bear just knew he could get food from tents. Mine just happened to be on the outskirts of camp so he took it down before the other hikers at the campground could scare him away.
