Haven't played a guitar in over 10 years, and I just picked up one of these, it called to me over everything else in the shop. Last I played I had a 4 string, super excited about how fun this has been to play!
Congrats!
I love what Schecter has been doing lately. Just finally picked up a J4 and i love it! I own 3 basses and 2 are Schecter. Awesome playing as always! Love hearing your input on gear and music. Have a good one sir!
Congrats on the bass! As always I appreciate the kind words and you dropping in to offer a little feedback!
You are the bass player I want to be one day. Love that Schecter too. Seems like I could get that Geddy tone no problem
Wow, that's some High Praise! I'm not doing anything special, so I'm sure you'll get there soon! You could definitely get the Geddy sound out of it, if you were going directly for that tone, I would probably recommend putting a j pickup in the neck as well. That would pretty much nail it.
i really love the sound on that bridge pickup. picking up one of these in a few weeks.
Man, what I wouldn't do for a tab/music sheet of that demo at the beginning. I don't even know where to go to learn this heavy style. Amazing playing. Nice bass!
You can do it! It's just a mix of styles and trying to shred while having a groove😉 If you watch at a slower speed, you could get a lot of it.
@@RodneyMcG Thanks for the reply. I'll try it at a slower speed and see how I make out.
Just got my Schecter 4 yesterday! Its a dream to play. I started on a Bacchus, but this a whole different world.
Better than bacchus?
Found a great deal on this bass last month and picked it up. My first Schecter and I have been really enjoying it. Your video was very helpful in my decision. Thanks and Happy New Year!
Congrats on the new bass! Glad I could help. Happy new year!
I had an SLS Evil Twin on order for 7 months but with no receipt date in sight have switched to getting one of these, since the store had one in. I hope I'm not going to be disappointed. It's my first bass purchase in 12 years and a significant upgrade from my Cort B4.
It's a great bass, don't think you'll be sorry. I greatly prefer the EMGs over the Fishmans
Thanks. It arrived today. The strings aren't my cup of tea being roundwound and super fresh and zingy but since they're nickels I know they'll calm down soonish. The tones are fantastic though. The neck is pretty much what I'm used to, maybe feels a little flatter but no thicker. Weight is good too. 18v is going to take a bit of getting used to. I couldn't stop looking at her, such a beautiful instrument. Eventually, I want to mod with a Hipshot Bass Xtender so that's a thing for down the line.
Love the color and the tone. I believe they even have models with Fishman fluence now pretty cool 👍
So far, the only models with fishman are the sls. I honestly prefer the EMG
I recently picked up the 4 string version and I’m completely satisfied
Thanks for the great review!!!!
Congrats on the bass! Thanks for watching!
Great vid. This video sold me on this bass over the Schecter Stiletto Studio 6. That mid EQ knob is what sold it for me. Thanks!
Nice! Glad it helped. Let me know how you like it when you get it.
Thanks for the review, Rodney! As soon as Sweetwater gets a lefty version in stock I'm ordering one.
Awesome! Thanks for checking it out. Report back when you get it and tell me what you think.
Thanks for the video! I was stoked when I saw this bass then I got more stoked when I saw this video. Love those Schecters!
Thanks for checking it out. I feel ya on the Schecter love! They are just killing it lately!
I don't thing the wood matters on an electric instrument.
What matters are the strings, pickups. pickup combination and position of pickups.
Have you ever tried a Sandberg bass?
These instruments are build in Braunschweig, Germany, around 80 km away from where i live.
They look ,,classy" but are the best build basses i've ever owned.
I modified my Sandberg VS (4 string P bass), with open pore matte black painted ash body, roasted maple 14" C-shaped neck into a PJ with active EMG pickups.
Now it's a killer metal bass!
They are way more expensive in the US but worth every penny.
I tried one once, and it was prettynice. Not really for me, but i get why some would enjoy it
That neck pickup is filthy, I might use one on my next custom bass build
I've always been a fan of the EMG P pickup, and this one is no exception
Rodney McG I'm usually a seymour Duncan kinda guy I use the spb 2 pickup but im liking the way the mid frequencies aren't dead gone like they are in alot of modern bass pickups, it's got a forceful attitude about it, and since it's a rectangular shape it will be easy to route the cavity as I build my own basses these days
@@woofystevenson2943 I've been a fan of the sd 1/4 pound P. I'm definitely curious to see how the new alnico based EMG sound for that reason. This sent definitely sounds as you describe it, a lot more weight and punch to it. If you get any shots or videos of your personal basis, them up and share them!
Rodney McG as soon as I figure out a good way to record my basses ill make sure you're the first to know
That’s a beautifully sounding bass. Thanks for the review!
Just got a left handed version
Nice! Congrats!
such a punchy bass, I love it...great demo/review.
Thanks, Earl!
I think we finally have the "best bass for heavy metal"! Seriously, do you play through some overdrive or is that a natural tone of bass and preamp (because it really sounds overdriven)? Also, as I understood, pickups are PJ configuration no matter the covers which looks as humbuckers? Thank you!
No drive - I do have some compression going on which adds some aggression, and I tend to dial in an aggressive sound. And you are correct. It's a OJ set inside the soapbars.
@@RodneyMcG Thanks a lot! Keep on rockin' as they say :)
Dingwall > Schester (for metal).
To each their own
Great review as usual.
Great demo. Nice chops and great tone. Thanks for the review.
Thanks for the good word, much appreciated!
The finish looks like something from Kiesel guitars. Purple cali burst.
A number of companies have been using this one lately. I definitely like it. Thanks for checking out the video.
@@RodneyMcG I like the finish a lot. So I have to have it also on my guitar. You can check it out here: ruclips.net/video/WmmiLTcwRnM/видео.html

Just ordered one online for $650 looks amazing hope it feels as good as my schecter e1 apocalypse
Hi Rodney! I am 53 and just started learning to play bass four months ago. Have Squire 60's Vibe P, but looking to upgrade. I have been considering a Geezer Butler Lakland and Spector NS Ethos, and have watched countless reviews on them. But, I came across this Riot by Schecter and, to hear you play it, that is the best sound I have heard! Just what I am looking for to play 70's-80's rock & metal mostly. Have you tried the other basses I mentioned and, if so, do you have a preference? For the money and sound I am leaning toward this Schecter. Also, what strings would you recommend (I'm going 4-string version.). Thank you Rodney! New subscriber!
My best advice would be to get the bass you enjoy playing the most and feels best. You can always modify the sound with new pickups, etc, but you can't change how the bass feels. I haven't played what you mentioned, but they seem like fine choices. I'm partial to stainless strings -GHS or D'addario, but I reccomend trying some for yourself as well, as everyone has preferences in exact tone and feel. Nothing better than settling in on a whole setup that really feels like home. Thanks for the sub, and good luck!
@@RodneyMcG Thanks so much for your reply. I will definitely take your advice! Thanks for the great content. I really appreciate it!
Just subbed. You are an amazing bass player. Very good review of the Schecter. That bass looks amazing. I love that swamp ash too. Keep up the great videos.
Sick composition u made for the demo man.
Much appreciated! Thanks for checking it out
Sounds and looks killer! I would gladly trade my F-415 for one of those.
It really surprised me and turned out to be a stellar piece of gear
@@RodneyMcG Leaps and bounds better than the first Riot, hopefully the prices don't jump, seriously considering selling my F-415 for this, I also have my Stiletto I'm looking to sell.
The pricing is pretty steady usually, so i think you're on good shape.
@@RodneyMcG They actually had one at my Sam Ash, I had to play it, for sure it's a beast, and much better balanced than expected.
So nice, but I'm tied up with payments for a year. So it will have to wait.
@@wyvern4588 very cool. Glad you got to check one out in person. I'm sure they'll be around when you're ready!
superb demo. after buying the Reaper 6 w/Sustaniac, the only bass I'm looking at is this beast...
The reaper is a killer, congrats on that! I definitely don't think you'll be disappointed by the riot. Thanks for checking it out!
I'm new to your channel and am a new bass player. I picked the bass as a means to coping with anxiety. I've practiced enough to know that I enjoy bass and I'm wanting to upgrade from my starter Peavey Milestone IV. I'd like my own sound, but I don't play metal. I mostly play 90's pop, some 80's pop, and a little blues/jazz. I love the look of this bass and you sound amazing with it. My seasoned bass friends say that this bass also has some great equipment. Is this too much bass for my type of musical tastes? I planned on buying a Fender Jazz at some point. But, I'm wanting to experiment with my expression before settling down with something more mainstream. And, if I like what I find, I may stick with it instead. Also, I'm considering the 4 string model. Thank you for any input you can add.
Thanks a lot for checking out the channel and the kind words. The Riot is a fantastic bass. There's nothing i would say about it that would make you question getting one. I have a number of schecters and it's one of 2 I consistently pick up. My advice on choosing an instrument is always "go with your gut"
There are no rules about using a specific instrument for any genre, despite what many people might want to tell you. Look for an instrument that inspires you, and that's the one. I've always said that the instrument that I can look at across the room that makes we want to go pick it up and play is the one for me. It should look and sound appealing to you, and no one else's opinion should matter.
Be inspired by your choice. You may go through a number of instruments in your time. The only time I've regretted a bass is when i bought it because I thought I should, rather than what I really wanted. If you decide on something else later, you can always swap out, but at least you know you will always be happy with every choice. Best of luck!
@@RodneyMcG thank you for those inspirational words! Time to beat the plank!
Hi there @TheAtlantaThrasher ! (I am a big Canes fan now but was a fan of the OG Atlanta Flames!). I am a psychologist in my 50's and picked up the bass for the same reasons; I love the sound and it is a great way to relax while challenging oneself to learn something new! Did you get the Riot? I am about to upgrade and pull the trigger on one so I am curious to know, if you picked one up, how you like it. Be well friend!
Excellent review!
Thanks for checking it out!
Hi Rodney,
I love the way you handle this wonderful bass. You are an amazing bass player, you make it look so easy but as a bass player myself, I know that not many bass player will handle it like you do!
I have two Schecter bass, a Stargazer 5 string and a Omen Extreme-4 string. I’m thinking of buying a third one but I’m struggling between the SLS Elite 5 and the C-5 GT Bass. What would you suggest?
Thanks man… Cheers!
Thank you very much! I haven't tried personally the GT, but from what I can see, it's basically a Hellraiser Extreme with some cosmetic differences. I would go with the GT. The SLS is nice, but I found myself having to do setups on them a lot as the thin neck moved a lot, I also prefer the tone of the EMG over the Fisman. Hope that helps.
Awesome vid! My dream bass lol I have a chance to get one for a G! I'm gonna try my best to get it!!
Thanks! Good luck with the bass!
As always, GREAT playing.
Thank you!
@@RodneyMcG It's well deserved. Very technical and about as clean playing as Geddy or somebody.
Damn fine instrument with even greater tone. I'm no bass player but I know good tone when I hear it and there was nothing on this at all that bad at all.
Thanks! She is a monster!
Yes, it sounds much better than the cheaper EMG 35 HZ pups on their cheaper basses. I always LOVED the set up and playability of basically all Schecter basses; especially the NT ones.
Great video dude! You earned yourself a sub
Thanks for the kind words and the sub! Much appreciated!
I love Schecter guitars, at least the ones that I've played. I own a Schecter JL 7, Jeff Loomis signature guitar, from the final year he was with Schecter, the first year that hiis signature Seymour Duncan pickups were installed. It has the finest fret work I have seen on a guitar priced under $4,000, it's comparable to the average fret work that I put on to my custom build guitars. This is probably the last guitar or bass that I will buy now that I have established my own company, I likely will build my own, as I build custom basses and guitars for customers.
I like Schecter basses, aside from how the neck and fretboard taper so narrow. I may have good dexterity and quick fingers, but my hands are just too big to be comfortable on a neck that gets so narrow.
I agree on the build quality and I especially like seeing the larger manufacturers become a little more adventurous in the species of woods, exotic and domestic , that they are utilizing. Believe it or not, when guitar builders use these woods for their instruments it creates value for these trees, it creates demand for these trees, and not just for cutting the trees down, it creates value and incentive for the people who live where the various trees grow to be aware of protecting these trees where they are growing and as they harvest these trees they have a very lucrative incentive to be growing more of these. The wider the variety that guitar and bass builders use, and drum builders for that matter, but the wider variety of the woods we use the less likely it is that the landowners will grow tree farms and monoculture, which are terrible environments for wildlife, which are susceptible to pest infestation, they are susceptible to be wiped out by pests or disease, and far more likely to encourage the explosive growth of pests, as they may have plenty of a food source but not have any preditors in that monoculture.
Anyways, enough of the botany and forestry lecture!
I really like how those pickups sound. I recently installed the EMG PJ X set as well as the EMG BQC System, which gives me a three band, boost or cut, EQ, with sweepable mid frequency , and dip switches inside the control cavity that allows me to shape the high frequencies, and even shape into the upper mid frequencies on the treble control. It's f*****g incredible. I absolutely love the tones, the versatility, and the ability for that bass to blast through, cut through, or punch through, any mix or any guitar tones, and I really can create whatever bass tones I'm after, for any type of music. I not only play various genres of metal, I also play Rock, blues, jazz, punk and fusion/progressive, and a few things I'm not even thinking about. Either way, that pick up set and that electronic set can handle whatever I throw at it, and it sounds great doin it. I will be rebuilding this bass, building a new neck for it as well as machining down the body so I can put a beautiful book match top, as well as putting something book matched on the back (I'm not sure what quite yet). Basically the only thing that will be staying the same on that bass will be the pickups and the bqc system.
I just discovered your channel today and I will be checking out quite a few more of your videos, as I play bass and guitar, I played bass and guitar for around 30 years, I've been working on these instruments since I replaced the pickups in my very first guitar the second day I owned it, and I've been building guitars and basses for about 25 years. My wife and I recently started our own business building custom high-end guitars and basses.
My apologies for the numerous typos and all the places where I fell on my face in terms of grammar. My phone has a bit of difficulty translating English into English
Great input and contribution. I agree on much of what your saying on modern basses. I've done a good bit of building myself, and I think every musician should be literate in construction techniques. It gives you a better understanding of why you like what you do.
I really like watching your reviews but I have a question do you run through a compressor when you do your reviews thanks keep up the great work
Thanks, Harold. Unless I specifically mentione it, there's no compression used.
Around 1:40 it almost sounds like Rosetta Stoned from Tool
Another great Video. Keep them coming. I wish I had a use for a 5 string, I think that would be a great choice. I love Ceramic and Steel EMG's ! Thanks.
Thanks, Ed! Always good to see you and I appreciate the kind words.
Btw, they use the same set in the 4 string model
i think im in love
Hey Rodney..how was the weight on that Riot 5? I had a Hellraiser Extreme 5 a few years ago..it was just a bit heavy for my taste. Getting the Schecter itch again. Thanks!
It's not ultra light, but maybe a bit lighter than the Hellraiser. This can of course vary bass to bass.
Hi Rodney, thanks for another great review. Is there any chance you could post a download link to the raw, uneffected sound files as you did with the SLS and Apocalypse?
Hey Richard, glad you liked the video. Unfortunately I can't put the DI files up as I don't have them anymore. I did that with reviews for a little while when people requested it, but nobody ever actually downloaded them, so I stopped bothering to do it. If you have any questions about the sound, or anything I can help with, feel free to ask.
Hey dude. I’m looking at picking up a bass after a long hiatus.
I’ve just came across your channel and noticed you’ve done videos on both models I’m looking at. The Riot 5 and the SLS elite.
I’m mainly a heavy rock/metal player.
Which would you choose out of the two?
Cheers
I'd go for the Riot. It's a bit more of a workhouse and the EMGs have more meat to them.
@@RodneyMcG thanks for the quick reply mate.
Hi Rodney, new Subscriber here, quick question.....Is the neck on this like yhe Stealth or the custom series? The reason why I'm asking is because the specs on the web page say they are tbe same....but they are not. I dig the Stealth neck a bit more than the custom, the string spacing is more my style. I know this because I've owned both. I called Shecter at the time & they said it was close enough that they didn't have to change it (quite the strange answer......lol) But I dig both....Thanks! Great videos!!
Hey Geo- thanks for the sub! The neck will be the same spacing, but it's thicker front to back. I remember the stealth being pretty thin. The Riot has more meat and is deeper. Hope that helps!
Bass sounds rad. I was checking them out a while back but am just a bit skeptical. Bought one for my first bass and just had so many issues with it.
I think you'd be pretty hard-pressed to find a lot of issues with this one. I've used it in a number videos a few of which I tagged at the end, in live shows, and then recordings and it's proven itself to be a total Workhorse. Thanks for checking out the video, and given some feedback. Much appreciated!
@DisforDubby i had issues with the electronics on my stiletto, and the e string was getting crazy bad fret buzz. unfortunately the one music store in my hometown went out of business so there was no way to get it fixed so i was S.O.L
Awesome review, just found your channel while looking for info on this bass. Love the tone. If I got one, it would probably be the 4 string as I've never played a 5 string.
Thanks for checking it out. If you grab one, stop back and let us know how you like it.
@@RodneyMcG I watched this multiple times and couldn't resist trying the bass.
I got the 4 string and absolutely love it. I'm a beginner bass player and it's been so nice to learn on. I absolutely love the neck and the look of it just makes me want to play it.
I'm just starting to explore plugins to try some different sounds.
Great review. Thank you. I saw it music123 and Sweetwater’s website and there states that it is 18 volts powered. But at schecter’s website it says it is 9 volts. Is this important to overall tone? Do you get more punch, tone or more volume with 18 volts? Please let me know. Thank you.
Thanks for the kind words and the feedback. Music123 is accurate in that it's an 18 volt set up. For the original EMG series I think 18 volts made a big difference. It made them sound more open and gave a little more Headroom to play with. With the X series, I think that you would be fine going with a standard 9 volt set up, but 18-volt certainly won't hurt anything. I think you'll see a difference in a little bit of extra Headroom, but the whole point of the x-series was to make a less compressed, and more open sound like what you would hear with an 18 volt mod on The Originals. Thanks again for watching!
What gorgeous instrument! Nice review too!!
Much appreciated!
I'm really thinking about pulling the trigger on the 4 string. I've played a few schecter basses and they've all been great, I've not played this one and prefer not to buy without being able to try. I intend to use it for drop b with neural dsp parallax or through my Darkglass B7K, and hope it will sound dirty but clear and punchy. Love your vids!
Hey Matt, I doubt you'll be disappointed. The Riot is exceptionally clear, and cuts like a sword. Thanks for checking out the channel!
@@RodneyMcG thank you so much! Love your work, and I've learned a lot!
Grateful to know I've helped! 🤘
I`m looking at this bass at Thomann Germany, great for rock/metal. Still, how it behaves in other genres? Any word of advice, Rodney?
There's no such thing as an instrument that only plays one genre (few exceptions) you determine if it works with your playing and how you dial in the sound. Play what you like.
Is the P pickup the PCSX? Based on what I saw online I was thinking that model wouldn't work for my string spacing. I thought I would need a P5CSX which doesnt exist
It's the 40pcsx
@@RodneyMcG There are a few in stock on Ebay. Going to save up for one. Thanks
Awesome!!!would you recommend this bass playing metal?thanks!
Yes, definitely
If you could only choose one, SLS Elite-5 or the Riot-5? Is the SLS worth the extra dough over the Riot?
Thanks for the videos!
That's a tough one. They couldn't be more different from each other. I can tell you what I like about each and maybe you can decide what's most important to you. The SLS is obviously slimmer in the neck, and overall a brighter bass. It also has a somewhat more glossy finish on the neck. The Riot feels like it has more depth to it. It's less bright, and more punchy. The satin on the neck is smoother. It's not a thick neck, but is deeper than the SLS. I like the EMG over the fishmans. The EMG have more grind and command in the tone. The Fishman's are bright and clear, but can be a little sterile. Not a bad sound by any stretch, but my preference is the EMG. If the EMG were in the SLS It would be an impossible choice! I love them both though. Hope that helps!
Awesome review, thanks man! How noisy are those pickups when in single coil?
Thanks. There is no coil tap on these pickups.
@@RodneyMcG I mean when you solo the P or the J, these aren't Humbuckers are they?
@@TheSubstrance P pickups aren't single by nature, hence the 2 different parts you usually see them in. The J is technically single, but the active grounding, etc, takes care fo the ground issues and noise.
@@RodneyMcG Gotcha, thanks! Really considering this one for my brutal metal tones.
I’m in the market for a 5 string. I’m leaning towards this one or an Ibanez BTB845 neck thru…unfortunately they don’t have either of them at my local music store, so I am not actually able to play them. Have you tried a BTB versus this one? Thoughts? They are fairly close in price, just wish they were both around here to test..I play metal & am used to a 4 string Steve Harris Fender..the neck is a whole tree on that..any advice on which would be best would be awesome
I'm not a fan of the B TB just because of the weight alone. They tend to be extremely heavy. I also am not so much a fan of the nordstrand sound. That's just my personal Taste, though. I'm also not a fan of some of the ethics being shown by Ibanez lately. I actually have 3 pretty nice SR series bases that are recent and modified buy me that I'm going to be selling just because I don't really like playing models from companies I think are being shady. Anyway, those are my thoughts. The weight and the pick up selection would keep me away from the B TB all other things made equal.
Wow this is so sexy, it truly looks and sounds perfect for me. I can't wait to get my hands on one, my next buy for sure. Great demonstration and detail walk through.
Thanks a lot for checking it out. It really is a fantastic bass. Drop in and say how you like it.
Does that bass eq knob actually do anything? You didn't use it here (unless I missed it) and mine seems to do absolutely nothing where as the mid is very wide and the treble works great.
It does a lot. +/- 10db at 30hz
I'm in the market for a bass but I'm currently between this and the SLS 5 - In your opinion, which is a better 'bang for your buck' instrument? I think this one looks so sick but if the SLS is just superior then perhaps I'll go that route.
It really depends on what you are after, they are pretty different. If you like a really slim neck, and that's important to you, do the SLS. If you like a thicker neck, go Riot. On the pickup part, between the Fishman and EMGs, I prefer the EMG set in the Riot. That's just my preference though. I also like that I can easily swap out for other EMG sets easily. I know that's not a choice of one over the other, but I hope it helps you decide.
@@RodneyMcG I appreciate the reply! I'm more worried about the pickups than the neck; I own an old C-7 Hellraiser and it's definitely not the sleekest neck but it still plays great and sounds great thanks to its EMGs.
New viewer and subscriber here!
@@SevansVII if you're looking for Best Value, I would add the Hellraiser extreme into your list. The neck is going to be the in between point of the riot and the SLS. It also has EMG is in it and they are coil tapped so you get a lot of options along with the onboard preamp. I have a couple of those in four strings and they've been longtime favorites. Thanks a lot for checking out the videos, and I appreciate the subscribe!
Really wish they made the 5 string version in left-handed too, that B-string sounds so good in those pickups
I'm pretty sure they do. You may want to email them
They do make this one left handed. Saw it online
Actually. Look up "Warlock" this kid is playing this exact bass in left handed and he is absolutely killing it. Very versatile sounding bass as well. He nails Cliff Burton, Steve Harris, Ellefson
@@iamgribs thanks for the feedback, I just was interested since when I looked it up somehow I couldn't find anything
How is this bass different from the session riot 5 ?
Much different finish and feel. Flatter fingerboard radius and in my opinion much better pickup choice.
i have a session riot 5 it sounds different, different pickups. the bass in this video is PJ set with extra headroom model. the session has (i think) emg DC in the bridge and J in the neck. I like my session quite a bit and you can do any sound or style of music imaginable. Plays nice. But, the DC is HOT , compressed and bright. Blended with the J it works well and it is very flexible but on it's own it's pretty much doing one thing and one thing only. DC sounds good with fuzz, J not as much. J pickup of course sounds great dark and menacing from a metal context. I usually have the blend leaning towards the J fundamental using the DC for high end top. When i hear the bass in this video I think I would prefer the pickups here but it still does the job.
How is it for a primus like slap tone?
Since Les used a EMG DC set for a long time, i'm sure it will do it justice!
Who else clicked on the thumbnails just because the Schecter is so beautiful?
She is a beauty!
Maybe you mentioned it and I missed it. Do you happen to know the string spacing? Also, thanks for the amazing review. You’ve sold me on the riot!
Glad it helped, Michael! the spacing is 17mm
Here's a question for anyone that wants to chime in to help throw a bit of guidance at me. So I'm currently in the market for a bass and I have pretty much narrowed it down to this Schecter and the Spector NS Pulse-5. Which bass would you pick and why?
Which do you prefer: this one or the c5 apocalypse? I really dig the apocalypse but have read several reviews saying that the pickup coil wraps wear through easily. Thoughts?
Hey Kevin, they are really different from each other. Both sound and feel. The apocalypse has a very distinct sound and has a larger variety of total options. The riot has less options, but I don't think that's a downside. It's clear and aggressive. The riot is a slightly chunkier neck and added brightness due to the bolt on Maple neck. I've never heard that about the pickups, and to be honest I'm a little dubious of it. Do you happen to have any links to those reviews? I'd be really interested to see them. I don't think you could go wrong with either Bass, Schecter really did a killer job on both. Thanks for checking out the video!
@@RodneyMcG good info man. IIRC, one of the reviews was on the (edit) *sweetwater* store page. I've been reading about a ton of basses. I havent played one in about 20 years and now that im old and can afford it, I want something I am really going to love for a long time (even though right now it will be a *more dollars than sense* purchase).
Right now i'm teetering between the C5A and the Ibanez 805 multi-scale.
@@RodneyMcG by the way, thanks for your content. It is great to see and hear these reviews from a metal POV. I love all bass, but metal is my passion.
@@TheBeardofDOOM it's really cool that you're getting back into it, Kevin! Again, I appreciate you checking out the channel and I hope it helps you with your new Pursuit!
@@TheBeardofDOOM I know this is an old post mate, but what did you get in the end. Your choices are exactly what I'm thinking between now. A schecter or the Ibanez srms 805…?
Hi Rodney, I'm planning on swapping my Ibanez Pickups to the same exact used by the bass and was wondering, if you soloed the neck pickup and played it clean, how far is it from a Fender P bass tone?
It will be close, but not identical.
@@RodneyMcG hope all's good. I have a final Q before I pull the trigger on upgrading my Ibanez 505e.
What combo would give me a great deal of high mids and very thumpy lows.
EMG PJ like this Riot 5 bass, EMG TWX (HH) like the Schecter Hellraiser extreme or EMG DCXs (HH but brighter)?
I'm looking to replace my Bartolinis BH2 which are "extremely" dark and lack any kind of high mids or growl.
I have a Jazz Bass that growls but lacks that bottom end thump so I'm looking for something in the middle, good for distortion and cutting through the mix.
PJ, no doubt.
@@RodneyMcG nice, planning on pairing them with a darkglass tone capsule.
One final decision i need to make, EMG offers them in: Ceramic, Alnico, Ceramic + Steel all in X and non-X version, so 6 to chose from xD.
What are your thoughts on that front?
In before, thanks so much for all the help Rodney, you've been amazingly helpful!!
Ceramic - X
Im guessing for 5 strings these are probably the thinnest necks you could get for a 5 string bass?
The Ibanez neckst Are a little thinner and the SLS series from shecter is definitely thinner
@Rodney which do you prefer the Schecter Riot or Elite? granted I know to different animals
Riot
@@RodneyMcG WOW if that's the case I have to get one :)
MmmmHMMMM...it's like a hot bastard sword through butter. Wish they'd done a trans/black burst!
Schecter tends to start with a small selection of colors, and then if it's a successful model they bring out new finishes the following year. You never know what may happen!
@@RodneyMcG That'd be tasty and I'd probably drop for one if so... Thought/suggestion; outro your vids with a classic random bass line that you think compliments well with whatever you're reviewing...just something quick for shits n' giggles!
@@r.w.culbertson2030 I'd like to do that. I have to be really careful on copyright. The copyright thing is getting out of control. I'm even in a dispute right now against a claim that a part of a demo that I wrote got a strike claiming it's a White Zombie song. They sound nothing alike!! It's getting crazy.
@@RodneyMcG Really!? That's why I mentioned "quick", to try and avoid that, as I figured it might be an issue...so they'll bomb you out for a 10 sec cover, eh? FFS!
Speaking of White Zombie, the best metal show I ever saw was Crowbar and White Zombie opening for Pantera on the VDOP tour. I was barely 17 years old and the Celebrity Theatre here in Phoenix has a central stage so there's an entryway for the bands to get to it, which I was right next to. As Sean Yseult was leaving the stage down the tunnel I tried to bust a move by yelling "you're a great bass player!" Ahh...to be a kid again. On the plus side, Dime and Vinnie came out in the tunnel and signed autographs between the Crowbar and White Zombie sets and I was able to muscle in and get Dime's on my ticket. They tore the shit out of that place that night...unforgettable!
@@r.w.culbertson2030 totally! They got me for something that wasn't even what they claimed it was!
Do you know what gauge strings the bass comes with. I haven’t been able to find it online
45-130
@@RodneyMcG thank you!
Hey Rodney if you look at the body shape it reminds me of Gene Simmons Spector bass that had the mirror pickguard
Ha! I can definitely see that!
Interesting, reminds me of Geezers BC Rich on the 1981 Mob Rules tour.....Cheers!
The eagle bass! Yes! I still have one of those.
Rodney.....post a pic will ya! That Bass was my inspiration....one of the reasons I'm leaning toward the new Riot! lol
@@geogarcia4065 Mine is out of state right now, but it's red and identical to the one Jimmy Bain used to have www.last.fm/music/Jimmy+Bain/+images/c2439815046a4fb4b3c547a921e16c86
Random question What kind of monitor speakers are those in the back lol
They are the JBL mkll series 3.
@@RodneyMcG thanks so much your the man!!!!
@@alexocimad8990 thanks so much for watching!
Simple question, does ir funk?
If you do!
how did you get the tone for this video?
It's just a tube preamp and a little eq. Thanks for checking it out!
New subscriber!
Thanks! Welcome aboard!
Is that the David Ellefson pickup set?
No p and j cs series
Awesome review! Please dust your computer desk. lol
Can't, it changes my tone 😂, thanks for watching!
EMG or Fishman Fluance? which do you like more?
EMG
I don't like the bridge, if a saddle gets broken I won't find a replacement
Crispy neck pickup, damn
Agreed!
If satan play bass, sound like this 👏
🤘🤘🤘
Nah, it would have high distortion or fuzz.
Can you give that bass away?
