- The Wild Thornberrys was one of Nickelodeon's weirdest shows, but it was also kind of great. The best Wild Thornberrys episodes were something you couldn't get in other animated shows. It was as if an educational show was actually kind of good. Nigel, Eliza and Donnie created some of the most interesting adventures on Nickelodeon and the movie was an amazing way to cap off the series. It also took itself strangely seriously in a way most shows at the time didn't.

I felt so bad for Debbie all she wanted was to have a Teenage experience. But I love how when she interacted with different cultures she was respectful
As a little kid I remember thinking she was ridiculous. Like how could you be so negative while traveling the world? Now I get it though. I'd have wanted some normal teen shit to do myself.
I think about the episode where they go to Tibet a lot.

I like to think the wild Thornberries is the prequel to mean girls.
The Wild Thornberries movie just IS an animated mashup of Mean Girls and Wild Child ft. a chimpanzee, in which the main character ends up rejecting rather than conforming to western society.

Something I think a lot of people miss with Debbie is that it's not just that Debbie is a grumpy teen. Debbie is a bit starved for contact with humans outside her family, which is why she wants so badly to go to the boarding school instead of Eliza in the movie. Interestingly this does introduce another educational aspect to the show that I think gets missed, Debbie actually is the one who usually get's involved with the different worldwide *human* cultures. Like in the episode about the myth of the shapeshifting river dolphins in the Amazon (which might be true in the show's universe and wasn't made up for the show it's an actual myth from that part of the world). In the film where Debbie makes friends with a tribe in Africa despite the language barrier. I am also sure I remember other instances of her learning about other cultures and making friends around the world which doesn't get touched on as much. I always thought that was pretty cool.
She was essentially a hidden philanthropist. With potential for her own show much like her parent's. They cover animals, and Debs coverin' the local human population. A shame it wasn't further touched upon.

Debbie frustration was understandable. I think is at the dolphin episode where she explote, because the parents say something about quit their live style because Eliza was (at their eyes) jealous of Debbie making a friend. So it was like totally unfair for Debbie, who have been begging for a normal love for years. I recall also a episode where Debbie is participating in a university debate online and she mash what she learned about animals into her analysis about humans (specifically the too of woman in society) and she did something similar in a school admission interview. It was smashing
One of the best Wild Thornberrys episodes was when Eliza met a girl her age who was in a wheelchair. This is something that Eliza has never dealt with before and, with good intentions, treats her with the upmost concern and tries to do everything for her. This results in the girl yelling at her for treating her like a baby and saying if she had wanted Eliza's help she would have asked for it. This was perhaps the first example ever (kids' show or not) of this kind of well-meaning ableism that disabled people face all the time.
There was a similar episode in Rocket Power where Reggie meets a girl who snowboards with a prosthetic leg and she wants to cover the "handicapped snowboarder" (again with the best of intentions). She later loses to the girl in a snowboard race on purpose, infuriating the girl, who only wanted to win if the competition was doing their best. After Reggie gets schooled a bit, they end up having a rematch with just the two of them.
Different station and different age group but the cartoon "Arthur" has an episode like that, involving a blind girl. Cartoons just arnt like they once were.

To clarify Tim was only Palpatine for the last few episodes of Clone Wars, after the original voice actor Ian Abercrombie passed away.

My favorite part of the whole show is the convoy, the vehicle they live in. That thing can do legit anything, float like a boat, become a submarine, have all manner of supplies inside. I wanted one in the worst way, still do lol

I remember back then I wanted to live in the Con-V and travel the world with my family in it. But the realization of the dangers and the potential of icky bugs surrounding me turned me off to the idea. Still the show helped form my love for different animals both domestic and wild.
My obsession with campers was created by this show. Good to see I'm not the only one.
Tim Curry, a brilliant actor most famous for playing scary villainous roles, really got to break typecasting here by playing Nigel, a genuinely likable and kind character in this show.
Nigel was really the breakout character of the show. It helped that Tim seemed to enjoy being Nigel.
I like to think if his health would allow it, he'd reprise Nigel tomorrow if he was offered it. I know fans would love to see Nigel return.
I heard about that Nickelodeon smash game from a video announcing Nigel being added, but it won't become a must buy until they add voice acting. I don't care if Curry's health won't allow his record any new material (which may or may not be the case I don't know how he's doing at the moment), there are surely enough voice clips that you could use to roughly fit the contexts of the game.
Dr. Frankie wasn't terribly scary. Just a bit of an oddball....
...well, at least back then. Now he'd be considered too tame.

I always liked how the show also didn't shy away from the fact to respect the animals and that they can be dangerous. Even though Eliza can talk to they they still pose a very real threat in a lot of episodes and she has to respect that along with her family.
Yep to this day I remember the hippo episode and how terrifying they can be.
The episode in Mexico where Eliza decorates the headstone of the little girl who everyone forgot used to get me every time. They could’ve done a cliche ghost story but did something so poignant. I thought it was such a respectful tribute to Dia de Muertos, though I am not Mexican :)
That's something that gets me. With multiple cultures (especially those not from the US/UK) it could've been a trash fire of accidental racism when most of the time it was relatively respectful and when the show was clumsy the situation was used to emphasize a point. Perfect no, but for something of the 90s it was relatively well researched and the show still blows others out of the water nowadays.

Never ordered Zoobooks or got them as a kid but I was happy that brought back alot of memories.
I feel the same way, what an unexpected nostalgia trip.
I miss the glory days of klasky csupo mostly for that absolutely bonkers art style. That was the kind of thing that lived and died in the 90s but it’s so unique and cool.
The Wild Thornberrys was definitely a step up from Rugrats, where the characters looked smoother and cleaner but still kept the artistic style.

Too bad the wife/ex wife was a bitch that didnt want angelica in rugrats, fired the creative genius behind the first two seasons of rugrats, and ruined everything she touched with her involvment.

The Wild Thornberries was an underrated GEM!! Besides the animal facts, and light hearted humor, it did cover some dark themes. Death was covered with elephants and a touching story of Niegle getting to remeet an elephant that he saved back when he was younger, who was now the elder grandmother of the young elephant Elisa befriends in the episode. Donny's backstory was especially dark, surprisingly; his birth parents were studying orangutans with him, but they are killed by poachers when they try to stop an attack on a mother and baby that they had befriended. Said mother orangutan adopted Donny until she saw the Thornberries, and arranged the for the good animal loving humans to find the boy. Later it is reviews that Donny remembers his parents, and that the Thornberries knew the couple. It is this episode that prompt them to fully adopt the boy. The whole story is one of the shows few two parters.
Another aspect of the show was when it dipped into the supernatural, or wishful thinking. There are multiple instances of Elisa coming into contact with ghosts, spirits, even the Yetti, but nothing is out right confirmed, so it is left to the viewer to make their own convulsions (accept for the extraordinarythingsoctopus, that just wanted to be left alone, or found a mate for the (then still alive) Lonesome George; the male, and last giant tortoise of his species.
Even near the end, Elisa was starting to get why Debbie was always so irritable about being dragged all over the world, as she was edging into teenagendom. Just great overall characters.

Definitely the episode where Eliza gives her mom’s sewing needles to some birds struggling to get grubs from inside trees. She almost destroyed the ecosystem of the episode’s location only because she wanted to help one bird.
Second place goes to the Origin of Donnie special.
I loved this show so much as a kid. As an African, myself, it really felt like the show shared my family's love of the African wilderness.
I loved how before the episode starts, they zoom in to a particular landscape. The people behind this show really emphasized accuracy
This show is probably why I ended up volunteering at a zoo as a teenager and why I chose to study wildlife in university. Oh how I WISHED to be able to talk to animals like Eliza!
this show was so informative when it came to animals and cultures around the world. if you look at the credits they give special thanks to various institutions like the Museum of Natural History. the staff working on it wanted to be as accurate as possible. props to them.
"It's attractively bent in three places!" Nigel Thornberry is a treasure.
for me the Parrot Fish episode sticks in my mind, where Nigel gets "stung" and his only hope is the medicine kit. That they have. That they ALWAYS have, because it's an emergency kit... which Eliza left like any forgetful human at the last place it was used.
I remember her fear and self-loathing, and Nigel just treating her with kindness and love, knowing that if he dies he doesn't want his daughter to blame herself for a natural human moment of for her. He of course wanted her to succeed in getting it back, but still wanted to know that he loved her even if she failed - not all things can be acomplished and some failures will be painfully expensive. That she would try anyhow... that was what he loved and nurtured in her.
I was once told that even the most skilled surgeon will lose a few patients. That really stuck with me. Everybody makes mistakes, but we're all doing our best.

The episode I think of as standout actually places the shoe on the other foot; Eliza ventures out alone with her llama across the Andies because she wants to show that she is independent. becomes hypothermic, collapses, and awakens in an Incan shelter with Nigel. Her llama says that she should show more appreciation for her dad, which she dismisses because the Incas saved her and that she does not need to rely on him; the llama tells her that it was Nigel who found her nearly dead in the snow, gave her his coat, built the shelter she found herself in by himself and started the fire within, with the Incas only being present because they happened to see the smoke. Eliza gained a real appreciation of her father and the fact that he would have gladly given his own life just to protect his family.
My husband and I both say the “I’m fine, it’s just pain” line, but we couldn’t remember where it was from.
I loved this show, and I always thought one of the coolest elements of it was showing how much love there was in that family while still acknowledging and addressing that dysfunction exists in all families. And that the lines between animal and humanity are a lot slimmer than we might expect. I hope the writers look at what we can do now to communicate with animals and get as excited about it as I was to see that communication on the show!

Lets not forget the episode where Eliza had to race the clock to find Nigel's first aide kit to neutralize the rockfish neurotoxin before he died. That episode was too real.

I love these comments because now I have a whole new perspective of Debbie. She not just the prissy sister who doesn't want to do anything. She just didn't want to do THAT. This just shows it's not genetics, you're just meant to do what you want to do.
I loved the end of the first movie when Eliza is asked by the shaman how good is Debbie at keeping secrets.

Cartoons are not like this anymore. All of these 90s-early 2000s cartoons had so much story, character, and messages to share with the audience. Everyone in the family could enjoy the show, the kids loved the theatrics and story and the adults could follow when they are watching these shows too. These were good days...can't believe it is all gone.

Very true. I learned a lot about other cultures among other things from this show. These kids shows today don't cut it. My nieces watch shows from the 90s, early 2000s, and previous years and they *LOVE* it.

Its because kids today dont really watch Cartoons as much. There are so many other things that kids could watch INCLUDING videos about cartoons instead of actually watching cartoons. We didnt really have the same options growing up so Cartoons were major appointment television for us.

Grew up with this show and loved it. As a kid who daydreamed about becoming the next Jane Goodall--and yes, I nearly exploded with joy when the lady herself appeared in an episode--I would have loved to grow up with the lifestyle Eliza had and I never understood how Debbie couldn't find it cool.
It wasn't until I got older that I realized how lonely Debbie must've been, cut off from her peers and people in general during her teenage years, one of the most crucial social moments in life. And this was before the wider access to the Internet everyone has nowadays. She often only had magazines or the two-way radio for company. And Eliza CONSTANTLY getting herself into danger (yes, I know that's the point of the show, and from her simply being a typical 12-year-old who thinks she knows everything), it makes you wonder why her parents took as long as the first film to try the whole boarding school thing.
The Zoobooks commercial took me back to a memory I didn't even know I had lol. Damn that was 13 to 14 years 🤪

Loved The Wild Thornberries growing up. Lets see there were so many I liked. The episode where they set up a Prom for Debbie, the one where Eliza gets to find her snow leopard friend again after she's grown up, the one where Eliza saves a polar bear from being blamed and the one where Nigel tries to teach Donny table manners.
Was a fantastic show. I remember an episode with Debbie where she did apply to a boarding school, and through her interview, showed just how much she has learned on their travels just, like pointing out to the teachers that a bowl or something they had was made of ivory and talked about it being illegal to the shocked faces of the teachers and her grandmother. She might not have chosen to travel, but she learned so much about the world and the animals in it.

Sounds like every person I see on social media these days who have those “I stand with this group or this cause” tags in their profile. Like the “I stand for $15 minimum wage” posts, while the person who posts it buys from companies who still use sweatshop labor in other countries, often developing nations.
Going back to this show as an adult, i never realized how much "Nature Facts," it was throwing at the audience. Like... it really did an amazing job of blending entertainment and education, and i can't think of many other shows that managed to match jt
I've always been amazed by the fact that in the episode with Jane Goodall, Jane Goodall herself actually came in to voice the character

The Wild Thorneberrys was easily my go too cartoon growing up, and was probably one of the key factors that fostered my love for animals in the first place. One episode that still kind of haunts me to this day is the one where Eliza has to rush back to the R.V. in order to save her dad from dying from a Lionfish sting.

Imagine if they met in the Jungle Movie when they went to search for Arnold's Parents... that could have been a real *smashing* crossover opportunity.
Also, it would really interesting because Arnold has had society without his parents, while Eliza has had her parents without society. Such vastly different experiences.

Anybody else remember that episode where Debbie got kidnapped by a dolphin who had turned into a girl because she was lonely wine friend? I don't know why but that episode always creeped me out when I was a little
I think the show played in a way you can not know of it really happened or it was just Eliza perception.
They made Nigel dumb in a sense but when he needed to be he was clever without the family really realizing it until the end result. I think the bird eating spider one showed this where the mom was in the dark about all the things he was doing to find it. also the pere one where he kept trying to tell eliza that singing helps open the lungs and get over oxy deprivation in the high altitudes
Nigel was a more rare type of idiot dad that was more so naïve and optimistic but intelligent in his field. He probably a bit smarter than Danny Fenton dad but similar.
This just took me back to the late 90s. I remember watching Nickelodeon any chance for this, Doug, Rugrats, Are You Afraid of the Dark, and even All That! Very simpler days 😔
I loved The Wild Thornberrys when I was a kid! I remember the episode about baby turtles that were about to hatch and Eliza learning about the importance of not interfering with the food chain of local wildlife. I also remember an episode about Eliza finding and befriending a very rare rhino that her parents were looking for. How, when she found it, she had a personal crisis. If she told her parents about it and they filmed it, it could easily be a higher target for poachers. However, her father had his heart set on finding it.

As an American born in South Africa and growing up in Namibia; I can say this show really did Africa’s landscapes justice. We lived in Tsumeb close to Etosha National Park and would visit often. This show makes me feel that deep rooted nostalgia for that place sometimes. If you ever get the chance; go spend a night in Castle Namutoni! It’s gorgeous!
The episode where they climb Machu Picchu was a real dramatic episode. Always remember to step and breathe.
I remember the movie upset me so much as a kid - specifically I remember bawling my eyes out when she had to give up her powers by saying she could talk to animals. If I remember correctly, she gets them restored for being like a good person or something after that?? Man. I really identified with her as a kid cuz it was my dream to go to Africa and hang out with wild animals.

I loved that show! Watching this show, I saw myself as Eliza and wishing talking to animals was a real life thing. I think this show, like you, made me who I am today. With my love for animals and the planet, i really hope for changes in humanity for the good to save them and their habitat. I really hold this show to my heart.
I loved the Wild Thornberrys. I grew up with an blonde American mom and a British dad with a rather large nose who tried to make us eat kippers and went to Merton so I always related to it. Idk if I'm taking my family and imprinting onto Nigel but his line about never having understood sarcasm always made me think of NIgel as being a high functioning neuroatypical person who could possibly be on the spectrum. My father struggled with accepting his quirks, which are actually quite charming if not coupled with insecurity. Nigel always seemed like a positive example of leaning into his "weirdness" in the best possible ways.

I have been thinking about this show so much recently. It was my favorite show when I was young and sticks with me stronger than many shows that came out later. No show has ever captured my love of adventure and learning in the same way.

This was my favorite Nick show! I wanted Eliza's power so badly, and she didn't eat meat so I didn't want to either, and so I don't! This show literally changed my life!

I remember the promo for the cross over movie. They had this scratch and sniff thing that went along with the scenes. What an era

Of course I watched it. This was my favorite cartoon growing up. In fact, this is the only kids cartoon I can still watch as an adult. I realized it was educational, and actually liked that aspect of it. I was always interested in travel, geography and animals so was excited to see a cartoon with those elements. I still remember the first episode I watched was the Pakistan one, and I watched it with my parents in the hotel. It's still probably my favorite episode, along with the Mexico one. Of course I see why they couldn't show the really dark sides of these places, and there were several factual inconsistencies which I picked up on only when I got older, such as the Angler Fish living in shallow water, and ancient Egyptian ruins in Siwa. Or the massive mountainous Thornberry Island being completely devoid of people, while being home to big cats. But I really liked the travel aspect of it. It was the only cartoon of its kind. I even had a crush on Eliza as a kid. Lol I really wish they would have featured more countries. Wasn't a fan of the Rugrats crossover, but the first movie was good. Also couldn't stand the appendix one. Damnit, I wanna rewatch these now.

Another nice thing was that the show was not naive about animals. Some of them are dangerous and can't be your friends, some others can be your friends but they are still dangerous. Like I one episode a big feline attacks Eliza, even when they were friends. At the end it was a misunderstanding, the feline was hunting when Eliza came from nowhere. But as Jane from the Tarzan series say to her british friends "the jungle is not garden I am should have never pretend otherwise"
Nigel Thornberry was my favorite character. He steals the show in every scene hes in. Definitely one I liked growing up.
Donny was officially adopted in the episode where we learn his origins

@@alexandram5845 I always thought that was a made for TV movie. He was the child of another couple who I think were also well known by the Thornberries, they were killed by poachers or thieves.
@@SpantaxDC10 poachers. They were kill while protecting an orangutan mother who then adopts Donny and then deliver him to the Thornberrys.

I used to love this show so much as a child.
The episodes I remember the most are:
-the one with the tailed and tailless Macaques. Eliza fools them into seeing that if you take that unique detail away, they are more alike than different. A beautiful lesson on tolerance and empathy.
-The one in which they visit Dr SPinoza in Peru. It was kind of spooky and had a fun twist at the end
Not gonna lie that opening bit, that was kind of a badass response.

Love this Jordan. I did grow up with it but I don't remember specifics in the episodes. I had a feeling this is what you had cooking and I am beyond hyped for this type of content. I'm happy that you're doing what makes you happy.
I remember the one when she got lost in the jungle and that maasai ghost girl was following her. Scared the crap outta me as a kid.
I missed that episode as a kid (apparently, it was pulled for years because parents complained of their kids having nightmares), but I saw it as an adult and it STILL gave me creeps. That final image of the girl's silhouette in the trees and then it vanishes as a gust of wind reveals just the branches and moonlight are there--freaky stuff.
Omg Yessss! The episode was called 'Naimina Enkiyio' which translates to "forest of the lost child" in the Maasai language. It was actually based on the Maasai legend. That's what I love about this show, you were entertained AND you learned. I'm nearly 30 and that episode still scares the fuck outta me.*shudders*

I remember I watched this show a lot on Nickelodeon. Nowadays the closest thing I’ve seen with this concept (cartoons that teach about animals) was Wild Kratts (the guys behind Zoboomafoo) but it’s not even close to the Wild Thornberrys
So, I came in on the tail end of the Pokemon content and I loved it. As a guy who grew up in the 90's, I'm incredibly on-board with this change, and I'm glad you're making content that makes you happy! Can't wait to see more!

Actually, first I bought a set called The Essential Collection, which contained 72 of the over 90 episodes, earlier this year... but quickly realized there was a problem.
The one episode I'd been looking forward to watching the most, which had eluded me ever since the 1990s, was The Gift of Gab, the episode in which Eliza gets her powers and meet Darwin.
First time I'd seen it was when it was playing on ABC back when the analogue signal was still being broadcast before digital television was even a thing.
But I only got to watch half the episode because my family had to go out for something, a full family event, I think.
The next time was when I'd found a VHS copy of the episode at a school fair.
But, when I brought it home, it was to find some asshat had switch it with another VHS that had been sitting close by, My Seen Dolls animated movie.
So, when I found the Essential Collection, I'd thought I'd finally be able to watch The Gift of Gab, after over a decade of waiting.
However, the episode is not included in that collection.
You would think that the episode where Eliza gets her powers, what many would consider THE ESSENTIAL episode of the series since it's what the premise of the whole show is literally based upon, would be included in a collection called The ESSENTIAL Collection.
Thankfully, the store I bought it from understood my reasons and let me get my money back and by the actual entire season when it came out later.
Finally watched the episode in its entirety and am very thankful for that.
Love this series and the movies (yes, I am included Rugrats Go Wild because that is both a Rugrats AND Wild Thornberrys movie).
Too bad we never saw Eliza's family in any way in All Grown Up.
Would've loved to see how their families interacted as the Rugrats grew up and were able to communicate with Eliza
This is one of those shows that I remember very vaguely. The one thing that sticks out in my mind is their RV being semi-aquatic.
As a kid I wanted to grow up to be like Debbie, I thought she was the coolest person ever
The Wild Thornberries was an underrated show. Wish more shows would do what this show did

I was born in 93' and literally every bit of your content covers some part of my childhood (which wasnt easy and was complicated) but cartoons helped me get through alot of the BS i had to deal with as a kid and your channel helps me connect with that part of my past. Thanks to this show I'm super scared of having appendicitis one day. Also: I loved the crossovers and I think this video should have included the fact that Debbie was the kind of character that seems selfish but it's just truly a hidden hero.
If I had a nickel for every time a Klasky-Csupo show had a redhead girl in need of an appendectomy, I'd have two nickels.
Which isn't a lot, but it's still surprising that it happened twice.
I loved that Debbie took great care of her sister when she had her appendix out.

This show will ALWAYS be so dear to my heart. Being a little girl one year for Easter my Grandma got me the Wild Thornberrys movie….I still as an adult can remember the pure happiness I felt from that gift. This show gave me such good childhood memories! 😭❤️

cant remember much concrete about the show beyond the character designs and some voices, but i remember growing up on the show and loving every second of it. Need to rewatch it now...
I loved the Peru episode where Nigel builds a warm shelter when Eliza gets hurt. Or the episode where Eliza thinks Debbie's new friend is a dolphin and wants to take her away. Quite possibly the most terrifying episode is when Eliza gets lost in the forest where a Masai girl once got lost, that ending is chilling to this day!
Absolutely loved this show as a kid and dreamt of travelling the world as a result

Growing up in the early 2000s as a kid named Nigel, meant I was often called Nigel Thornberry. Can't say I didn't love the show though, so it wasn't all bad. Also, I'd like to bring up the time they did an episode that required the viewers to use a scratch-and-sniff card to smell along with the show. Ah, so fun!
Going through your backlog, great consistency even before you had all your tools and intro you still made great content. Good work JF!
