Great cycle ride which I have done a number of times. When one comes to the blocked-off railway bridge over the Mersey the best course of action is to head for Rixton Old Hall and get through alongside it up to the A57.
May I correct you on some of the "facts" you gave as you stood by the Ship Canal at the start of your video? You were not standing in Irlam, you were not standing in Cadishead, although people refer to the sandy part of the embankment as Cadishead Beach, in fact you were standing in Warrington Borough. The disused railway bridge with the bicycle on it, that was in the video, goes over the River Glaze. This river divides Greater Manchester and Warrington on the north side of the Ship Canal.
And finally. You said that the River Irwell no longer exists in Irlam. Yes it does right next door to the Boathouse pub! There is also another stretch of it by Boysnope Wharf on the way to Peel Green going out of Irlam and a third stretch of it at Barton which runs into the Ship Canal near Barton Locks.

What a great ride, definitely on my list for drier weather. The opening shot of those dreaded ramps at Birchwood had me sweating. Are there no restrictions to that path along the ship canal? Do you have to retrace your steps back to Hollins Green?

I think because it uses to be the Mersey then technically its a right of way. But there are signs from the 80's saying manchester ship canal property. Its definitely not anything anybody's bothered about these days.
I actually went home through Lymm up over warburton bridge and down the ncr 62.

Agreed full heartedly. You could link onto the 62 from here. :)
