- Remarks by NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg and the President of Finland, Alexander Stubb at a moderated discussion hosted by the Atlantic Council of Finland, 6 June 2024.
🗣 | NATO Secretary General:
Let me start by saying that it is a great pleasure to be here and as I said this is my first visit to Helsinki after Finland became a full-fledged member. I've been here many times but this is for me an important, almost historic, visit because it's great to be in Finland and then be visiting a NATO Ally. Alex mentioned earlier today that we met many years ago when he was Foreign Minister and I was Prime Minister of Norway. And at that time, I think none of us were able to imagine the possibility of Finland being a full member of the Alliance just not so many years later. And therefore, it's also rare to share this moment with him and to see so closely how Finland now is really not only a member of the Alliance, but a very capable, highly valued NATO Ally with the high skilled well trained, well equipped forces, the high readiness. We were briefed earlier today by the military authorities in Finland and it was extremely impressive to learn more about actually all the help that Finland is providing to this Alliance. NATO is making Finland safer but also NATO stronger and thank you so much for doing that.
Then, on the integration, I think it's important to remember--first of all I agree with Alex that things are moving well, but it's important to remember that we didn't start on zeros. It was not like Finland was just a random country out there suddenly becoming a NATO Ally. The reality is that Finland was a very close partner. So we did a lot together even before you joined the Alliance. Exercises, we worked together as close partners, Finland participated in NATO missions and operations; I met Finish troops in Afghanistan, in Iraq, and elsewhere also before you became a NATO member. So we started on a similar footing and then we are moving from there and integrating the good and successful way Finland into all NATO structures.

Wow! I got a lot more than I expected when I sat down to watch this video. I expected to hear about what NATO is thinking with respect to defending Finland's border, and did; but then add to that spending an hour in the company of two the most brilliant men on the face of the planet today. Thank you, gentlemen! It was time well spent!
Speaking as a native American, a Texan born in Kansas... golly, you guys speak English better than half of the Americans we see on television these days! Maybe there's something in the Nordic genes.
Stubb is totally bilingual in Finnish and Swedish and fairly fluent in English, German and French.

A very interesting presentation. Great to see two of the world's most civilized countries joining NATO. Welcome Finland and Sweden. You are both an obvious upgrade to the alliance. This will reduce the risk of WWIII ever happening.
After having lived in Russia, there's one point I disagree with though… There's a saying that it takes 3 generations for major change to occur in a society. In Russia's case, a culture violently opposed to progress, I predict that it will take at least a century for it to become a truly civilized and democratic country. 25 years is absurdly optimistic. Just look at where Russia was in 1924, and where it is now. Little social progress has occurred over that period…
Great to know we are all protecting each other, any country that thinks they can use bully tactics will learn a very harsh lesson that will be quick and with the utmost professionalism

It just occurred to me that 20 years ago you would have had a staccato of camera flashes and the sound of dozens of mechanical shutters. Now everyone is just silently taking images with their phones which no longer need flashes or make shutter noises. What times we live in.

Wonderful to see two committed leaders like this. The time section 47:40 to 49:10 is one of the clearest political declarations I ever heard. In these times even a summary of a treaty can be entertaining :)

Finland was part of Russian empire and cave out independence, fought brutal war and now a full membership in NATO. Please don't forget there are still so many the nations and republics similar to Finland in 19 century (from Tatarstan to Sakha and others) that are still oppressed by Russia!
