considering that in Norse mythology most dragons, unless killed early, would live upwards of 300 years i think its likely that there are more than one at a time
Fun Fact: There is no known way to defeat a Screaming Death. They are descibed as being too fast, too strong, and too angry on the wiki I believe. They also possess every strength of the Whispering variant while also having amazing eyesight and a bond so strong with their mother that no matter the location of the 2 of them the Screaming Death will know if their mother is in danger and come to her aid. Or to chase down whatever killed her

And literally everyone on the httyd team (especially for httyd 1) have stated that Toothless is meant to be last of his kind, which is why the Light Fury is a subspecies, and the nightlights are hybrids. Toothless is still the only night fury alive, we also have confirmation that he's the last when Grimmel says he's hunted down every last night fury except Toothless

Also, I think about Grimmel....I think the statement goes as far as he does since there can never be an assurance that a type of dragon (in the HTTYD world) is completely extinct in the world due to the slight chance that they might hide and just never show themselves. Like if say i wanted to kill every Chihuahua from the world.....What if one chihuahua was hidden by an old lady in small town? That means even though I indeed declared that I hunted and killed every Chihuahua....My statement can never be true since there was still that one dog I didn't know existed. Toothless is the last of his kind. His kids are not Night Furies themselves, they're mixed. The Light Fury is not a female version of the Night Fury, they're a different breed of Furies. Just like different types of dogs and cats, and like when you breed a Pomeranian and a Husky and get a Pomsky. Both genetically similar enough to breed, but still completely different breeds :)

Yeah, the the animated series is formally made after the book series, but... they made almost everything different, except the names. Like... Toothless in the original isn't even a night fury. Vikings there already had a symbiotic relationships with the dragons from the start of the book and even have tradition, where the kids who is coming of age have to go into dragon nest and steal their egg or wyrmling to raise them. And Hiccup there were special not because of his dragon or because he was the first to tame a dragon, but because he had an ability to speak with dragons on their language... When animated series started I preferred to think, that it is kind of prequel to the book(cause book protagonist had "the Third" at the end of his name, but Hiccup from animated films hadn't told his full name, where this "the Third" part should have been), but after the "How to Train Your Dragon 3"... yeah, my theory is completely ruined(although it already was before).

The buffed purple death in animated version. Just imagine if the dragon Furious from the books would go into the animated series and cannonically fight the purple death from the animated series. If you read the books, then you probably know who the dragon Furious is.
If you think about it, the night lights are pretty rare since they are the hybrids of the night and light fury, and considering the fact that the kids of toothless and the light fury are only night lights we see in the httyd 3, so technically when Toothless dies, no more night lights are gonna be produced, and i call it, "The Great Black Out".

As you see with ligers and mules, what makes them hybrids and not their own separate species is their inability to procreate. That's why the definition of "species" includes the ability to reproduce with one another and birth FERTILE offspring, I just find this neat as a biology student. (edit to say that this isn't completely shutting down the idea of fertile hybrids, since there are some real life examples (majorly canid, like wolves/coyotes etc.), but yea)

Technically the Buffalord, Nightfury, and Purple Death are equally rare cause each are the last of their species unlike the the Screaming Death who most likely has a few roaming at any given time depending on their life span and Bewilder Beasts having a population over one being enough to rule them as not the rarest
In biology terms I'm pretty sure if there is a breed less than a thousand in/and something then it's considered rare or endangered. So the Bewilderedbeast is still just as rare as the other rare dragons. That I know of there's only like pushing 4 of them but I'm pretty sure there's only 2 or 3.

The rarest dragon is Seadragonus Giganticus Maximus. It's only been mentioned in the books, has max stats in everything, and are said to be as big as mountains and islands.
There are at least 6 of them in the books. The Purple Death, The Green Death, Furious, Toothless, Luna, and the Wodensfang. There are several dragons that are more rare in both the books and the shows. The first that comes to mind is the fire dragon.
The books are in a different universe to the movies so the seadragonus isn't Canon in the films and the purple death from the comic is part of the same universe as the films but not seen or spoken of in the films.

Technically night furies and light furies have to be the same species, considering they had children and there is no indication that those children are infertile, so tbh not quite

From my understanding, a breed is only a cosmetic thing, no actual genetics are changed, while a subspecies can have different genetics, explaining the difference between the nights ‘and lights’ abilities.
I mean dog breeds are very different genetically, in fact that's they part of why there's so many different breeds. For example Bloodhounds were breed to have a far better sense of smell and retention of smell than some other breeds. Husky were bread to be well suited for the cold environments and be effective sleigh dogs, which many other dogs can't perform as well as. Breeds can have many differences beyond "cosmetics" and size is included in that. However yes, in the case of Lightfury and Nightfury they are more likely closely related species rather than lightfuries being just a breed of Nightfury. @@HippoEnjoyer
I think they aren’t so much an arctic subspecies, as one adapted for the hidden world, and by extension a colder climate. Cause yeah it’s pretty clear night furies are built for warmer places, while I suppose it could be said the light fury’s softer and rounded features are to prevent frostbite. I think they are in part adapted specifically to the hidden world though, unlike the night fury which is distinctly made for the outside world

I've been on Roblox, playing HTTYD roleplay games and having fun, but one memory really came back to me watching this video.. The "lean dragon" you spoke of is a gamepass in an older version that probably doesn't exist anymore. A player was walking around, stepping on smaller dragons as this purple beast. I was a light fury because those are really common to see in that game and I thought I was **so prettyyyyy** so I flew up to that thing and said, "NICE BEARD, MAN!" So he stops for a second to type, and he replies with, "thanks" and on a seperate message he said, "appreciate it". I drew it the following day.

This is meant as no hate but I’m a little confused, wouldn’t the Nightfury still be number one? It was said that toothless was thought to be the last of his kind and his babies are Nightlights which is kind of a different species in itself. And once the Nightlights breed out and toothless passes there would be no one trace of the Nightfury unless there are actually some other ones still alive that have never been seen before besides toothless

For all we know, all night furies were goofs like toothless. In the start, the light fury wasn’t getting along well with toothless. He couldn’t get the mating dance right, which is supposed to be a genetic instinct. My guess is that light furies and night furies are different breeds of the same species but that also diverged enough that they developed different habits and instincts. Light furies being more fearful, using invisibility to hide while avoiding danger (notice how her skin is smoother, seeming more fragile, and the light skin, and glitter, exposes her more, which creates a dependence on invisibility) while night furies are more aggressive and bold (toothless has more rough and tough-looking skin and his black scales gives him passive stealth so he doesn’t have to worry as much and can be more carefree which could lead to a goofier nature compared go the light fury’s more serious and worried nature). Maybe night furies had a different mating ritual which wouldn’t work to try to woo a light fury. They weren’t even meant to mate, but had to due to lack of any other option.
The difference is that one species lived in Hidden world (no sun, lot of water/humid air, smaller places) and the other in the outside world. They evolved to live in their prefered habitats. That might add to why was the Light Fury so scares and aware of it's surroundings. She doesn't know how to act in forests and open skies. Also it seems that Night furies can make themselves invisible as well, wich would be useful for such a predator as a Night fury. It would make them more of a thread (that makes me question if Night furies can make themselves invisible why didn't they use it to escape Grimmel? Maybe they forgot how to do it since it wasn't needed for them anymore..? They could just fly away easily? The mating ritual... We don't know if Toothless ever met another Night fury. As far as we know he could have grown up alone with other dragons in the den of the Red Death. Making him not knowing any other rituals than those he saw from other dragons.. but it's possible that what he was doing was actually something that would catch attention of another Night fury. As you said: Night furies could have been goofy with each other

As other comments state, Light Furies are a different species from Night Furies and the spawn between them are a mixed breed. After Toothless, the literal last of his kind, dies, there will be no Night Furies. Night Lights will be the closest living relative of his species. Another commend described it as like breeding dogs. Toothless and the Light Fury are like breeding a German Shepherd and Swiss Shepherd. The pups will be Shepherd dogs, but not specifically German nor specifically Swiss.

@Marlin123 it's true that they come in different colours, however, it is said in the movie that she isn't a night fury. She has a multitude of different attributes from toothless mentioned in the scene where hiccup is telling the gang about their encounter. Her dorsal fin on the back was different. Her tail and the thingies by her head were different. Not to mention the fact that she can use her plasma to turn invisible. Toothless cannot. Light furies and night furies are different spiecies.
I'd argue the light and night furies having babies does not in fact add to either of their respective breeds... considering they are very clearly a mix between the two.... I'd argue they are dawn/dusk furies.... or twilight fury......

there’s plenty of lightfury’s, nightlights are rare for now because they just started but as time goes on they’ll breed themselves into a viable species and Bewilderbeast can have more than once egg in a century, the Screaming Death can literally only have 1 born every 100 years so they’re definitely more rare unless they live for more than 500 yrs so it would be 1. NightFury 2. Screaming Death 3. BewilderBeasts 4. NightLights 5. LightFury
With the nightlights, it kinda depends on how close of a species are the nightfury and lightfury. Because if they're different enough, just a slight difference in their DNA coding, then the nightlights can't reproduce. A lot of hybrids(tions, ligers, and mules) can't reproduce because of that slight difference.
Everyone mentioning Toothless, but no one is mentioning The Red Death from HTTYD 1 - the one Hiccup lost his leg to after he and Toothless killed it with a fire blast - how rare is that one??? It had very similar powers to The Bewilderbeast.

The purple death is a variation of the green death. Both are leviathans and one is able to survive in molten lava. I don't know if the purple death or bufflord can be considered to be the rarest. I think that dragon could be considered as the rarest or possibly a dronkey. Both are technically cannon.
Toothless is still the only Night Fury we know of, him and the Light Fury made an entirely new species called a Night-Light. Edit: Totally didn’t call Toothless “Toot” on accident.

@@Dea1986I mean at the very least the lightfuries at the very least are more numerous than nightfuries, at least it appears this way, as in the 3rd movie within the hidden world, we see a few other ones separate from the main one were introduced to, even one was a little smaller and possibly younger than its peers. But yeah they'd probably breed into extinction given enough time, and I'm sure Toothless would have a few more broods before he passes. Which yeah those babies once grown would probably eventually out breed the last of the lightfuries and even if any nightfuries were left, which if there is, its probably not much considering how hard they are to find, it wouldn't be long before their bred into extinction if the nightlights could be considered a hybrid species instead of just nightfuries with lightfury traits.
From what I heard the definition of a species is a group that can naturally reproduce in the wild, which light furies and nightfuries can. A Labrador and a Husky aren’t different species despite them looking and behaving differently.
For everyone argueing id like to add that Night and Light Furies are difficult species. This demonstrated by their children. Even if we assumed male nightfuries are black and females are white. It doesn't expain why toothless and the lightfury's children have both black and white colorings. The only explaination is that they're different species. Toothless's bloodline will live on. But his species is destined to go extinct do to grimmel. Also for those saying its impossible for him to have kill ALL other nightfuries. Dont underestimate him. Keep in mind he deduced which way they were going in mere moments knowing everything and even knowing how to use untrapped dragons as bait and using a dragons own venom to enslave it. Judging by his age hes been doing it for awhile and likely traveled the entire world hunting them. The only reason it took him so long to get toothless and the only reason he survived was because of hiccup, the other dragon riders, and the entirety of berk. Also why would grimmel use the lightfury as bait if it wasnt a female nightfury. He would have just killed it outright.
Spoiler if you haven’t read the book: Hiccup basically had to get eaten by the purple death, and shove his helmet into the “fire breathing thing” and blow it up from the inside
I think that was actually the green death. The purple death was the dragon that the green death fought to the death against before trying to eat hiccup as his last act before dying. That’s when hiccup put his helmet in the fire holes. And to answer the other replies, Hiccup is still anti-dragon death in the books, even though the books are completely different. However, the green death was a giant sea dragon that would have eaten his entire village if he didn’t kill it. Some dragons need to be killed(it was also foretold that the green death, once known as Merciless, would be killed by a Hiccup, which turned out to be true, even though the dragon was around when Hiccup the First was alive and thought it was him and tried to have him killed.
Toothless was and is the last pure Night Fury, and the Light Fury is a Light Fury of coures, its a different kind of variant breed of Night Furies. They're kinda like a Lion and a Tiger, the kids, are what you would say Liger, idk I pull that comparison outta my ass, but I just wanna say, Toothless is the rarest

The foundation for the game is complete. Now I have to finish coding everything an running the code to see if it crashes often. That in itself will take longer then actually writing the code. Hold on to your butts. My 1 Man SuperFan army is going strong. The pre-alpha I've estimated to release in 5 years. VR is finicky tbh.

I think the move to bring the dragons to the hidden world was the best move honestly. Considering multiple species of dragons almost went extinct, partially because of human actions, they'd potentially get room to stabilise their like numbers..

Toothless is the last of his kind. His kids are not Night Furies themselves, they're mixed. The Light Fury is not a female version of the Night Fury, they're a different breed of Furies. Just like different types of dogs and cats, and like when you breed a Pomeranian and a Husky and get a Pomsky. Both genetically similar enough to breed, but still completely different breeds :)

Fun fact: there is a "How to Train Your Dragon" book series, and the Purple Death is one of the main 2 antagonists in the first book.
Yeah, the the animated series is formally made after the book series, but... they made almost everything different, except the names.
Like... Toothless in the original isn't even a night fury. Vikings there already had a symbiotic relationships with the dragons from the start of the book and even have tradition, where the kids who is coming of age have to go into dragon nest and steal their egg or wyrmling to raise them.
And Hiccup there were special not because of his dragon or because he was the first to tame a dragon, but because he had an ability to speak with dragons on their language...
When animated series started I preferred to think, that it is kind of prequel to the book(cause book protagonist had "the Third" at the end of his name, but Hiccup from animated films hadn't told his full name, where this "the Third" part should have been), but after the "How to Train Your Dragon 3"... yeah, my theory is completely ruined(although it already was before).

If you think about it, the night lights are pretty rare since they are the hybrids of the night and light fury, and considering the fact that the kids of toothless and the light fury are only night lights we see in the httyd 3, so technically when Toothless dies, no more night lights are gonna be produced, and i call it, "The Great Black Out".

As you see with ligers and mules, what makes them hybrids and not their own separate species is their inability to procreate. That's why the definition of "species" includes the ability to reproduce with one another and birth FERTILE offspring, I just find this neat as a biology student. (edit to say that this isn't completely shutting down the idea of fertile hybrids, since there are some real life examples (majorly canid, like wolves/coyotes etc.), but yea)

The rarest dragon is Seadragonus Giganticus Maximus. It's only been mentioned in the books, has max stats in everything, and are said to be as big as mountains and islands.
There are at least 6 of them in the books. The Purple Death, The Green Death, Furious, Toothless, Luna, and the Wodensfang. There are several dragons that are more rare in both the books and the shows. The first that comes to mind is the fire dragon.
The books are in a different universe to the movies so the seadragonus isn't Canon in the films and the purple death from the comic is part of the same universe as the films but not seen or spoken of in the films.
What about the fire dragon from the books?

From my understanding, a breed is only a cosmetic thing, no actual genetics are changed, while a subspecies can have different genetics, explaining the difference between the nights ‘and lights’ abilities.
I mean dog breeds are very different genetically, in fact that's they part of why there's so many different breeds. For example Bloodhounds were breed to have a far better sense of smell and retention of smell than some other breeds. Husky were bread to be well suited for the cold environments and be effective sleigh dogs, which many other dogs can't perform as well as. Breeds can have many differences beyond "cosmetics" and size is included in that.
However yes, in the case of Lightfury and Nightfury they are more likely closely related species rather than lightfuries being just a breed of Nightfury. @@HippoEnjoyer

I think they aren’t so much an arctic subspecies, as one adapted for the hidden world, and by extension a colder climate. Cause yeah it’s pretty clear night furies are built for warmer places, while I suppose it could be said the light fury’s softer and rounded features are to prevent frostbite. I think they are in part adapted specifically to the hidden world though, unlike the night fury which is distinctly made for the outside world

The "lean dragon" you spoke of is a gamepass in an older version that probably doesn't exist anymore. A player was walking around, stepping on smaller dragons as this purple beast.
I was a light fury because those are really common to see in that game and I thought I was **so prettyyyyy** so I flew up to that thing and said, "NICE BEARD, MAN!"

For all we know, all night furies were goofs like toothless. In the start, the light fury wasn’t getting along well with toothless. He couldn’t get the mating dance right, which is supposed to be a genetic instinct. My guess is that light furies and night furies are different breeds of the same species but that also diverged enough that they developed different habits and instincts. Light furies being more fearful, using invisibility to hide while avoiding danger (notice how her skin is smoother, seeming more fragile, and the light skin, and glitter, exposes her more, which creates a dependence on invisibility) while night furies are more aggressive and bold (toothless has more rough and tough-looking skin and his black scales gives him passive stealth so he doesn’t have to worry as much and can be more carefree which could lead to a goofier nature compared go the light fury’s more serious and worried nature).
Maybe night furies had a different mating ritual which wouldn’t work to try to woo a light fury. They weren’t even meant to mate, but had to due to lack of any other option.
The difference is that one species lived in Hidden world (no sun, lot of water/humid air, smaller places) and the other in the outside world. They evolved to live in their prefered habitats.
That might add to why was the Light Fury so scares and aware of it's surroundings. She doesn't know how to act in forests and open skies. Also it seems that Night furies can make themselves invisible as well, wich would be useful for such a predator as a Night fury. It would make them more of a thread (that makes me question if Night furies can make themselves invisible why didn't they use it to escape Grimmel? Maybe they forgot how to do it since it wasn't needed for them anymore..? They could just fly away easily?
The mating ritual... We don't know if Toothless ever met another Night fury. As far as we know he could have grown up alone with other dragons in the den of the Red Death. Making him not knowing any other rituals than those he saw from other dragons.. but it's possible that what he was doing was actually something that would catch attention of another Night fury. With the nightlights, it kinda depends on how close of a species are the nightfury and lightfury. Because if they're different enough, just a slight difference in their DNA coding, then the nightlights can't reproduce. A lot of hybrids(tions, ligers, and mules) can't reproduce because of that slight difference.

The purple death is a variation of the green death. Both are leviathans and one is able to survive in molten lava. I don't know if the purple death or bufflord can be considered to be the rarest. I think that dragon could be considered as the rarest or possibly a dronkey. Both are technically cannon.

@@Dea1986I mean at the very least the lightfuries at the very least are more numerous than nightfuries, at least it appears this way, as in the 3rd movie within the hidden world, we see a few other ones separate from the main one were introduced to, even one was a little smaller and possibly younger than its peers. But yeah they'd probably breed into extinction given enough time, and I'm sure Toothless would have a few more broods before he passes. Which yeah those babies once grown would probably eventually out breed the last of the lightfuries and even if any nightfuries were left, which if there is, its probably not much considering how hard they are to find, it wouldn't be long before their bred into extinction if the nightlights could be considered a hybrid species instead of just nightfuries with lightfury traits.
From what I heard the definition of a species is a group that can naturally reproduce in the wild, which light furies and nightfuries can. A Labrador and a Husky aren’t different species despite them looking and behaving differently.
For everyone argueing id like to add that Night and Light Furies are difficult species. This demonstrated by their children. Even if we assumed male nightfuries are black and females are white. It doesn't expain why toothless and the lightfury's children have both black and white colorings. The only explaination is that they're different species. Toothless's bloodline will live on. But his species is destined to go extinct do to grimmel. Also for those saying its impossible for him to have kill ALL other nightfuries. Dont underestimate him. Keep in mind he deduced which way they were going in mere moments knowing everything and even knowing how to use untrapped dragons as bait and using a dragons own venom to enslave it. Judging by his age hes been doing it for awhile and likely traveled the entire world hunting them. The only reason it took him so long to get toothless and the only reason he survived was because of hiccup, the other dragon riders, and the entirety of berk. Also why would grimmel use the lightfury as bait if it wasnt a female nightfury. He would have just killed it outright.
And he most likely had an army of deathgrippers but most of them died

I think that was actually the green death. The purple death was the dragon that the green death fought to the death against before trying to eat hiccup as his last act before dying. That’s when hiccup put his helmet in the fire holes. And to answer the other replies, Hiccup is still anti-dragon death in the books, even though the books are completely different. However, the green death was a giant sea dragon that would have eaten his entire village if he didn’t kill it. Some dragons need to be killed(it was also foretold that the green death, once known as Merciless, would be killed by a Hiccup, which turned out to be true, even though the dragon was around when Hiccup the First was alive and thought it was him and tried to have him killed.

Toothless was and is the last pure Night Fury, and the Light Fury is a Light Fury of coures, its a different kind of variant breed of Night Furies. I think the move to bring the dragons to the hidden world was the best move honestly. Considering multiple species of dragons almost went extinct, partially because of human actions, they'd potentially get room to stabilise their like numbers..
I knew about the purple death before I watched this, I already knew it was going to be the first, there is only ONE in existence. And it’s under water and rocks in a deep sleep.
The Purple Death is basically the Berkian equivalent to Jörmungandr. They believed that if it came to Berk, it’d cause Ragnarok, IIRC.

Toothless is actually the last of his species, even his mate is a subspecies called light fury, and while there r quite a few light furies around, the producers themselves stated that toothless is last of his kind.
