This story + the narration are the kind of horror that doesn't really scare you, but it really makes you feel the anguish of the situation.
The scariest thing probably about the story in that stuff like this actually does happen in real life. For example, some gas station nachos could give you botulism.
It's best not to give in and buy the nachos.
If you want nachos, go to a real restaurant
@kentworch Great got spoiled but this kinda stuff has happened in hospitals
^^^ THIS, couldn't say it better.
It's not the supernatural aspects that make this so unsettling. It's the everyday horror of an incurable disease threatening to become an epidemic. The implication that it was a purposeful infection just brings to mind the very real fear, and threat, of a bioterror attack.
Well done.
This could've easily worked without supernatural.
@@Sig509I highly suspect hunters did it.
i think what also sells this story, for me, and probably a whole lot more, we go in expecting a story about a list of rules to follow when dealing with x, y, and z, this story however, pulls a complete 180 with an outbreak not long after, and with the similarities to coronav 19, makes it all the more uncanny valley, or perhaps for some, makes the real thing, all the more scary.
The fact this could actually happen irl. We do have diseases without cures to this day. And there could be plenty more diseases out there that we don't know of yet.
@@frozendragon1874 I think this flipping of expectations detracts a little from the story for me. The "fey" didn't really serve a purpose in this story. They were just kind out there. Makes me wonder why the author bothered including them. The story was good overall, but I can't help but feel like there was a missed opportunity.
As someone who spends a lot of time in hospitals, this one is pretty unnerving. I hear all those weird code calls on the speakers at all hours wondering what's going on. Sometimes, I hear them enough to figure out what they are, but there are odd ones that really make me wonder, this story isn't necessarily helping with that, lol.
Same. Whenever i see doctors and nurses running in the middle of the night i always wonder whats happenning. Sometimes you can tell but most Times you just sir in your Room wondering whats going on.
Normally, I get a private room, but one time, I had a roommate who was an older gentleman who was recovering from a hardcore surgery. They operated on his back, but they went through the front to get there. It ended up being a several hour surgery. He was in my room for 3 days, and he had uncontrollable hiccups the entire time, even in his sleep. Between the nonstop hiccups and the code calls, I thought I might lose my mind. The nurse said his hiccups were a side effect of the prolonged procedure he had done, but I wanted to smother him with a pillow.
Here's a list of the most common codes. Keep in mind that some of the less common codes change from state to state, these are the ones used in Pennsylvania.
Rapid response: any medical emergency short of a code blue. This can be anything from someone passing out to a seizure. Every department has a designated person to respond (cardiology, respiratory, IR, xray, lab, pharmacy, neurology, etc). This ensures not everyone comes running (and they all do run!), but also time isn't wasted deciding who goes.
Code blue: cardiac or respiratory arrest or both
Code grey: unruly or combative person. This could be for either a patient or visitor.
Code silver: hostage or active shooter (I've also seen purple used)
Code pink: baby abduction. Make yourself comfortable because you will not be permitted to leave until it's found. It's rare for this to last long since all baby ID bracelets usually have chips that will activate the pediatric doors to lock if they get too close to them or are cut off.
Code amber: missing child. Same as above. You ain't going nowhere until little Suzie is found.
Code yellow: missing adult patient
Code Brown: chemical hazard
Code orange: mass casually event
Code red: smoke or fire
Code black: bomb threat
Code green: hospital evacuation
Hope this helps. Hospitals can be scary places, but there are emergency contingencies for practically any situation you can imagine, and everyone from the doctors to the janitors are trained in what their specific rolls are.
Thanks for the list, I saved it for future reference. I spend my time at Cleveland Clinic main campus. Nothing scarier than staying in the neuro icu and hearing strange urgent calls to where you're located, wondering if you're dying.
@@mjc8248 I totally understand why patients can hear codes and worry that it's related to them. If it's any comfort, just know that if you are hearing a code call, 99.99% of the time it's not going to be for you. Most of the time those patients aren't conscious or aware of the codes at all. I can't say never because nobody who works in a hospital *ever* says something never happens because as soon as you do, it's guaranteed that it will! Yes, we are all superstitious, even those who won't admit it!😂
As a nurse this is hurting my feelings and I’m not even through more than 16 minutes of the story. 1) if someone having stomach pain don’t give cold water that makes the pain worse 2) if the patient says his pain is a 10 you do not give ibuprofen ( that’s like giving him a skittle) we would immediately be starting IV pain relief ( especially if the man is a werewolf I would assume he would need stronger IV pain relief than a human regardless of his past medical history of drugs ) . He also needs to be on CIWA for the alcoholism and monitored for Ativan administration. Sorry my teachers told me I would find it hard to watch anything Medical anymore even fictional stories 😭😭😭

Most certainly cab agree with what you had said,
Damn, this story is excellent from every angle. Its characters are truly human. Mehan is set up initially to be this unfeeling, utilitarian antagonist to the MC's idealism, but each time we see her, while she's doubling down, the cracks start to show in what's really a facade. Her character is incredibly tragic because her infection breaking her front makes you realize she's always been putting up a front because its all she can do to keep going, because she knows what happens if she fails. Also, I adore the line, "I'm with one already", when Mehan tells Jamie to go help the patients. While Jamie came to understand why Mehan had taken the measures she did, it still shows that he didn't let the experience kill his empathy like Mehan did. And Artie making it out alive was such a wonderful reward for making it through the harrowing moments of this story. "That damn take-out", indeed, my friend, "that damn take-out", indeed.
This comment sums up everything I feel so well!! Artie's comment at the end was a much needed chuckle after all the tragedy that had ensued.
The thought of a cute sentient kitty creature dying and struggling to save themselves with their illusion powers was the saddest part of the story for me. I cried.
The Meow was trying to live till the very end, it was trying to attack the infection with its last bit of magic as it was dying.
That showed you how awful the infection was because the story is clear the Meows are tough enough to fight sirens to a stand still.

Sylvia was an amazing character. She was written as a ruthless dictator, but when push came to shove, she put herself on the same level as all of the others. The rules applied to her too, and she wasnt scared of that fact, she was just someone with an enormoussense of responsibility. Thats what makes her amazing. She was a hero, although a rutheless one.
I completely agree, she immediately put her own life on the line and was willing to make the right decisions (as well as she could) even when it was hard and made everyone hate her. She didn’t deserve to get attacked but I also can’t blame them too much..
@@jasminechan4705 I feel like the aggression she was narrated with made her seem worse than she was. If you listen, you'll hear "she said calmly" and such, which I don't think was really reflected by the narration. She struck me more as a professionalism forward, pragmatic type than the sort of antisocial person we heard.
Sylvia reminded me of Cameron from House. A good doctor, but so annoying

(Maybe Vamires could burrow themselves for 1000 years - but then would have to drink from - what? )
It unites in some way with what you would usually fear because suddenly there is something WAY worse out there - uhm in there, uhm no in yoy ? And if not there are the ones that will shoot no matter what , just to be rather safe than sorry...The enemy is visible and invisible.
I'd definitely have an existential crisis then and there..

This is eerily reminiscent of ED and ICU during the first 6 or so months of Covid. Too many patients, too little supplies and a lot of death.

What I find truly captivating about the art in this series is its deliberate lack of fixed descriptions, allowing our imaginations to roam freely without tying us to any specific individual or even a living creature. It's akin to a dream, reminiscent of the works of Poe or Lovecraft. Exceptional job!
Much more emotional than I'm used to in these kinds of stories. This one was uncomfortably relatable. Just, how something like this could happen, ignoring the cryptid element. Thinking of Ebola. Watching my son splashing and playing in the pool, weird shadows filtering through the trees and warping on the surface of the water. So many vectors for chaos...

This one really gripped me. Im usually playing a vid in the background while playing a game, but i had to stop and just listen. These are one of those masterfully written works that just demand your full attention. And it doesn't follow the usual cliches. Mc isnt a powerhouse, no sequel baiting, and the ending is one of the most bitter ive heard in a while with only the thinnest hair silver lining.
Spoiler warning, I guess!
This may sound harsh, but if these patients have literally no chanse of survival no matter what is done to them and the hospital only serve as a waitingroom for death at the moment, would it not be safer and more ethical to euthanize the victims and not force them to die in such a painful and scary way? I mean, they literally are borderline shoving living patients into the cremation ovens, surley it is more moral to make sure they are dead first?
Honestly that’s what I thought, an OD of morphine where they won’t feel any pain, and will enter a bliss like state just before the end? Would certainly be a LOT more humane than shoving them into the cooker!
You’re so right but to be fair some of the medical details aren’t entirely accurate anyways (med student here trying not to fixate on the blood in vomit misinfo among other things🥲) I think their choice in not writing that is purely for plot, still a good story though!!

Congratulations!!
He gave ibuprofen to a guy with a possible stomach bleed?
One way to make them die faster
@@NotGettingWhatIPaidForRUclips I was trying to relax in bed after a long day, and he made me so worked up like I wanted to slap him
That’s what got your attention?
Great writing and wonderful read. I love your heartfelt every man voice. It really sucks me into whatever tale is narrated, each and every time!
I get taking them out because you can't save them... but why did the mow/mau go to the incinerator AWAKE!?! thats some next level of horror. Eaten alive or burnt alive... wtf....
Awesome naration as always tho ^.^
I really love how well written these stories are!
Just when I think, "surely he's got to run out of amazing stories " only to be gifted the beauty which is the 1 hour long plus story
So heartfelt, so sad, gut wrenching. Amazing story x
This is one of my top 5 of your narrated stories. Thank you, thank you.
OMG Stephen.. what a gut wrenching and kinda gross story. You are amazing. I could really feel the characters emotions. I can’t express how much I love the new format. Thanks again.
I've always loved stories. My dad used to read allsorts of myth, scary & science stories to me & my brothers as kids. I've never forgotten them. We were enthralled by them. As i was by you with this gripping story. It was just so perfect. The story, narration, music, everything. This is a story to go back to. Again & again. Thankyou for bringing back my wonderful childhood memories ❤😊
I love long stories, thank you for making another one of these. Great channel🐌
I didn’t come into this story expecting the weight of it all. What a haunting story. Great job narrating it.
Looks like I'm turning the TV off early! I love your voice & the longer Lighthouse stories! Keep 'em coming!
I love hearing this guy red the story’s--he perfectly portrays the pain, anxiety and anguish-it triggers my mind to believe theses stories actually happened--
I'm properly blubbering 😢😭 That was an incredibly well written story & your story telling was spot on as always. The end, the flipping end 😮 xxxx
This a great story and shows how great you are at narrating. The scariest part is that we've had true horror stories that make this a just a bad day. Don't forget the black death plague in Europe that killed from 75 to 200 million people. There are some things out there that are also terrifying as well.
500 million people were estimated to be on the planet at the time and officially its 75 million that died meaning it killed nearly a 5th of all humanity.
WOW!!! What an outstanding yarn. Get more from this author. PLEASE!!!
It's a great story with terrific narration! Thank you for bringing this story and the characters to life. You did an AWESOME job!
Already loved your story telling but since you starting appearing on the stories made something perfect even better. Please keep working your Magic and we will keep coming back not only to listen but to see you! ❤👀🧚♂️🧜♀️
I love how most stories of his are actually really adventurous, more than horror
I absolutely hate parasites! That is probably the main reason I hate vampires. This story has an extra revulsion factor because of that. Well done on the narration as always!
This story was so good. Could have completely done without being a hospital for monsters and “rules” story since they ultimately had not effect on the story, but still excellent. Actually the human morality element was its best face.
I originally started this thinking you might help me get to sleep. Now, there's no way I can fall asleep! You were made for this, LH. I love your voice!
Love you Stephen, and thank you for the awesome pasta. I'm beginning it now. If I don't finish it tonight I'll restart it in the morning. Thank you so much for your top notch work.🖤🖤🖤🖤
This was fantastic. Honestly, the supernatural element could be forgotten entirely here, and the story would still be one of horror. To my knowledge, there is only a single pathogen with 100% mortality, rabies, and at least there are some protocols that can be used to save lives, precious few though they may be. This story invokes the fear of a weapons-grade biological outbreak. The icing on top is that you can, if you read between the lines, get the idea that this was an intentional attack. Now I can only wonder about the motive behind this outbreak; was this some hunter of the supernatural? A would-be vampire hunter or werewolf hunter? Do they have any idea how much pain and suffering they unleashed? I think it is the best stories that make you ask these kinds of questions, so this is definitely a winner for me.
