Ohlins DFV Coilovers for Honda S2000 - Worth the Price?
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 20 апр 2021
- We replaced the CR shocks and Swift springs on this 2006 AP2 with out-of-the-box Ohlins DFV. Possibly the most hyped suspension for the most hyped Japanese convertible. Does this combo feel like nirvana or was the car better off with its OEM+ setup?

9:30 installation done, Ohlins review starts
Just bought a set! Can’t wait.
Nice review of the different shocks.
Springs determine how much the suspension moves, the dampers determine WHEN that suspension moves. Shock tuning is about TIMING weight transfer. Soft shocks increase the speed of weight transfer, stiff shocks slow the speed of weight transfer. It gets complex because the rear rebound affects front dive, and front rebound affects rear squat, as well as having anti-roll properties.
It gets even more complex when you consider that there is fast and slow speed damping, and what they do is also counter intuitive. Some times a slow damping issue can be made better or worse with a high speed damping tweak.
Holy smokes dude. This info is gold.
Babe wake up new Zygrene video
Best looking convertible sports car ever produced, Honda S2000.
love your channel man. content for JDM tuner purists.
Love the install vids
Oh yea so fun I nearly came
I've heard nothing but good things from Ohlins DFV's. Doesn't matter what chassis its in.
Epic engine-noise 👍😍
The only coil overs I’m buying for my next modified Honda
I'll add one a lot of people who aren't in the autocross/track world don't know about, Redshift Motorsports. He's been in the shock game a long time, and building his own for a while using BC bodies and Bilstein internals and his single adjustables are the same price as the DFV. I went from stock to his singles on 14k/11k and the ride is surprisingly good, barely harsher than stock. They ride and perform as well on track as another guys AP2 on MCS double adjustables on slightly less spring rate, just without the separate compression and rebound knobs. After having his double adjustables on our race car, and it being leaps and bounds better in handling and ride over race-valved Koni doubles we pulled off, I'm sold.
Admittedly I haven't ridden in a car with Ohlins, but I have a friend who has them and I plan to back to back them soon.
Great info.
Needs impact gun...lol...
Awesome vids as always!
Good Job Zygrene
Just the review I was looking for! Running a 2007 stock AP2 suspension with Michelin PS4S. So conclusion...is it worth the outlay of cash for Ohlins for a weekend street car / cruiser? The goal is greater comfort without slop...but honestly the stock suspension is really not that bad! Thanks
Yes, totally worth the money for a weekend street car and cruiser. More comfortable than stock with less slop.
What phone mount is that? It's the modifry one isn't it? I have it but mines not magnetic it's the side clamps
CR Shocks with Swift springs is a pretty damn good combo.
Underrated.
@@TofuProductionCinema yup!
Did you guys took it in for alignment after the ohlins? Or is it necessary?
Exciting that your 911 is "done". Hitting the track soon? I'm going to try to avoid the summer heat at thill.
Hoping to track it very soon
I think I will get one for my GPW
You know anything about Annex suspension out of fremont?
Between these and the RSG feals to replace my aging FA500's
nice video
It’s been documented that the standard set up has down falls for the rear shocks related to preload
What exhaust do you have on the s?
With the 8k rear spring you should be at 22mm of preload with the stock fork otherwise you'll be on bump stops.
We set them to 10mm and I didn't feel any unwanted behavior in the rear suspension. Damper travel felt sufficient for street/canyon driving.
Nice review! Not directly comparable, but I recently bought a 964 that came with ohlins and it’s really a bit too firm for low speed urban driving (say 30-40 mph) especially where road qualities are poor. But once you pick up speed I think that’s when the magic happens and the car just sticks to the road regardless of potholes, and car actually feels more compliant the faster you go. My perfect suspension would be low speed stock comfort and higher speed ohlins compliance, but not sure if that’s at all possible.
These are the DFV model. Unsure which shock model you have, but maybe a more track centric setup.
Any chance you can review the Sakebomb FPSPEC LONG-STROKE OHLINS DFV? Thanks for the review.
I mentioned them briefly in this video: ruclips.net/video/-qHy2-35o5I/видео.html
Conclusion: Yes, they're really good. Custom 12k/11k spring rates. But for a pure street car I'm not sure I'd pay the premium. They make more sense on a dual purpose street/track car.
Corner weighted?
I need some of that headlight restoration help maybe a Zygrene code to get a discount. $700/hour rate might be out of the budget
I guess Im quite off topic but does anybody know a good place to watch new tv shows online ?
@Dangelo Valentin Try flixzone. You can find it by googling =)
Goddamn that windshield crack really bothers me for some reason ... sick car btw...
Looking to pair an S2K with my FK8. Do you have a buyers guide video on what to look for?
Savagegeese has one. Also, check S2ki. 😁
A little off topic, but what rails/sliders are you using for the Recaro Pole Position? I recently purchased the PCI slider setup as that seems to be the go-to option. I’d like to have a backup plan if that doesn’t work out!
It's the PCI rail/slider!
Would you say that with a good set of coil overs, like the Ohlins, you can settle the rear of the AP1 to the point that it's a better balance of liveliness and stability than the AP2?
I'm about to answer this very question in 3 days! AP1 + Ohlins review
@@Zygrene did you release this video?
God the f20/22 sounds sooo good. Really tossing up between evo 8/9 and an s2000
Are you gonna daily it or is it going to be a weekend car? I have both and the S2k is a lot more fun imo.
@@elementsk8erq daily for awhile but eventually weekend car. I love both for what they are. Sometimes I want the s2k for an all out handling car like the Amuse s2000, and sometimes want an evo for a ~500hp all rounder car
"NSX is my wife." Hahahaha
Did you guys had to disconnect sway bar on either front or rear? I heard the rear is a pain to remove...
To answer my own question. Rear need to be disconnected but not front. Ohlins are worth the money.
hey what exhaust is that? sounds awesome.

My mechanic says the HKS GTs are nearly as compliant as the Ohlins at a significant price delta. I am ready to change my suspension. Any thoughts on the two for an AP2?
I've been very curious about this myself. Want to drive the HKS GT back to back with Ohlins.
I had the GT's before I upgraded to the SP's. GT's were very very soft, rubbed like crazy, even with -3.3 camber up front with rolled fenders on 17x9 45 w/255.
Very entertaining and thoughtful episode as usual Fenton. I'm in no position to talk anyone out of spending $ on their car, but spending time to dial in the correct spring stiffness, linear vs progressive rate, adjusting shock dampening, or simply finding the best tire pressure for the shoes it has on can have a significant effect on a car's ride and handling. Know thy car first, then throw money at it. ;o)
When you got a car collection like that, you know that the 2 grand is just chump change
Did you change the spring rate? how much was the spring rate you used in the video? is it daily drivenable on minor potholes? i want to used the reference to my evo x
Your example with the compression/rebound cycles after some speed bumps, clearly showcases a WRONG set up coilover. That's why you have independable compression and rebound adjustment like on a KW V3. If you set them up wrong, you'll get the mentionend cycles.
Would you get a set of ohlins for your Nsx?
I would if they were priced more reasonably
8:13 LMFAO HAHAHAHAHAHAAH
I wish I could afford the ohlins but had to get the HKS to use the rest of the money for new control arm bushings.
which ones and how do you like them?
@@_Suzuka_Joe I got the hks gt since I daily drive the car. So far I like them and I have them set at 15 clicks all around which is in the middle since it goes up to 30 clicks. I haven't adjusted them because I've been lazy lol, but I'm sure I can get them to ride better. I'll probably get the car corner balanced once I replace the control arm bushings.
@@Balo657 I can afford to buy the ohlins but I think I’ll get the new hipermax S coilovers. Hundreds less and better than the buddy club I used to have
@@_Suzuka_Joe I just looked up and I guessed they discontinued the GT and replaced it with the S. I'm assuming the S are better than the GT and for $1400 it's not too bad. Although I'm a bit jealous that I just missed out on getting the S.
What do u think about the tein flex z coilovers?
Never tried them but definitely curious
Trash. Had them. Sold them. Bouncy as duck or stoff as fk.
@@Dinotti I ended getting them on my s and tbh they feel great especially for the price no complaints from me as cheap as they r (:
What’s the damper setting??
He set it right in the middle
CAN you share the the rim specs with offsets please?

@@Zygrene Thanks 😊 for the reply!
Preload doesn’t affect rideheight with Ohlins - adjustable preload on same rideheight
it does once you are already at the limit of the ride height adjustment. In this case that is the lower shock body. Any additional preload at that point effectively shortens the spring and just the starting point for your shock cycle is lower
@@user-qt3fq6lm8d that makes sence 👍
Zygrene is correct, Ohlins is the superior street suspension. Absolutely more comfortable and compliant. For light track and autocross use, they're plenty fast for 95% of drivers. Following the 20% rule for respringing shocks, Ohlins can be resprung to 12K/10K and so forth. I've seen 13/11 and even 14/12K set ups on factory valving. Obviously, a shock valved for a 10K/8K won't be as compliant when sprung at 14K/12K nor as capable as shocks valved specifically for 14K/12K. So what happens if you revalve your Ohlin's? They lose the rebound adjustable function and become compression adjustable only.
My recommendation for a 3K budget is still valved and sprung Ohlins up to 16/13K. Even when compression only, they're still great and more compliant than comparable valved BC Racing coilovers.
When we talk about sustained track use, the rear shock bodies for the S in particular are rather short. The limited oil capacity of the rear shocks can heat up and degrade performance. This is when you'll start to see external shock body reservoirs (even the stock S has them). Naturally, if you're at risk of overheating your shocks and you're pushing high spring rates at their limit, you know you need a dedicated system anyway which is why Ohlins has their track oriented TTX system. They take on the likes of MCS, JRZ, Penske, and Moton but with significantly lower nitrogen gas pressures so they need less rebuilds than the competition. For reference, I was quoted at $4900+tax for Ohlins TTX 2-way and most people aren't willing to spend that much money on a suspension unless they have a purpose.
So I now Realize Zygrene is the Asian Dwayne Johnson!
You know those are just the basic street Ohlins, not their motorsport product that would be comparable (and superior) to JRZ, and similar to Penske, Motion Control, etc.

What exhaust is that she screams a good note !

Bro inhave sam setup. They are so stiff. So uncoftofable on steet. Ia chamged sprongs to 6/5. Its little better but still harsh. Speccialy on higways. Sometimes i think my steering wheel is going to drop out of my hands, when u drop down on higways at high speed.
Shoulda gotten the SakeBomb Ohlins.
For street use and ride comfort I think the shelf Ohlins are just fine
JRZ isn't meant to be comfortable on the street 😂
Edit: pronounced "ooer-leens"
More preload will lower the car. Basically you are squeezing the spring more, but I would not advise doing that. Cheers
more preload will raise the car, due to less sag/droop.
