I see a lot of people saying that if Good Marik ended his turn then Yugi would have lost to deck out. However Ragnarok only banished Yugi’s Monster Cards, so he still had some deck left.

I thought it banished all of his cards until I looked at the effect. I don't know his entire deck by heart but I do know he had Card of Sanctity in his deck and I don't believe he drew it yet. Marik drew his copy of it but Yugi didn't draw his copy. With at least 1 card left in his deck, he would draw for turn and then attack for game.
The animators went SO hard on Marik's expressions during this duel. Him getting attacked by Obelisk has so much expression and pain on his face
I mean getting attacked by a God fist first in the face might hurt a bit.
The animation on Marik from start to finish was top notch. Even the way they had him draw cards throughout the Duel was so *clean*
I love how extra Marik was in this duel. Not that he usually isn't, but they animated him on a different level for this one.

Nothing in the rules of Duel Monsters explicitly says you can't disintegrate people's souls.
While funny I think he was working on the premise of the previous duel. The one where slifer and obelisk crashed but didn't wanna lose. Kaiba said it was a glitch in the hologram so I wouldn't be surprised if the ref saw the separate soul as an optical illusion or a sort of glitch in the duel

Checked the official rules…there is no rule against using any kind of magic to transfer the game into a demonic hell…neither in anime nor in real life

Something glossed over a little is a certain symbolism! In the original Japanese version, Monster Reborn is named "Resurrection of the Dead" which takes on an extra meaning here and later in the series. Marik using it to bring back a God over and over again is essentially him defiling the grave, and by extension a grotesque defiance of his family's past as Gravekeepers - perfectly in line with Yami Marik's personality. Banishing Ra prevents Marik from defiling the grave further, and Original Marik returns, 'bows' to the pharaoh by surrendering, and proceeds to share the Gravekeepers' secrets. This is expanded in the final duel against Yugi (where he effectively denies Atem's stay in the land of the living by blocking the use of Monster Reborn.)
Ragnarok does not banish Ra actually. Its a simple destruction effect like Raigeki. Only difference is that it banishes your own monsters as a cost.

There's another condition to this shadow game: Mai Valentine who had her mind trapped in an hourglass would be freed with all of her memories restored should yami yugi win. So, this duel is essentially a catch-22. Either lose & protect the good marik while little yugi dies & mai stays trapped, or beat yami marik, free mai & kill the good marik
"Good" Marik is a STRONG word to use for him. To quote YGOTAS: "So are we looking at the Evil Marik...or the EVIL Marik?"

I like the symbolism of Yugioh correctly summoning his god cards, giving them their proper tribute, while Marik constantly disrespects Ra by throwing him into the graveyard and summoning without giving his due.
Now that you mention it, would it be against the rules to constantly summon Ra from the Graveyard and send it back after the turn? I'm not at all familiar so this seems really funny to me
@@PixelHeroViish It's a legal play, as the effects of the god cards automatically sends them to the graveyard at the end of the turn they're special summoned like that.

@@PixelHeroViish anime, it's legal, tcg and ocg, only Slifer and Obelisk (but they send themselves to the gy during the end phase), Ra can't, as it can't be special summoned (it's why cards that summons Ra says ignoring the summoning condition)

I think the Pharaoh not creating more tokens was in line with his character.
Since loosing LP meant that Yugi was closer to being erased, the Pharaoh chose to play "safer" by just creating enough tokens to summon Obelisk
Plus since he had Ragnarok it could be argued that he at least had a backup option in mind, if not looking for the opportunity to banish Yami Marik & Ra.
But couldn’t he just sacrifice them immediately to give obelisk infinite attack?

The main issue to why Yugi didn't win earlier was because he was worried in the entire duel about the "good Marik" being banish for existence and Yami Marik continue to live. So, yes, he could won earlier, but that would have meant that Yami Marik would be free in the world and all :v

@@williampinkley1842 You forget that Marlik was the key to unlock the pharaoh's memory and can go back to the afterlife.
Not only that, but in terms of him talking about the metal fiend token, that costs him lifepoints. The Pharaoh had to make a hard call towards the end (I forget when honestly I'm due for a rewatch lol) and he and Yugi look at each other and talk about it. Atem realized there was no other way out-he HAD to keep the fiend on the field to save his lifepoints as a whole otherwise he'd be wide open for attack. BUT again that would cost not Atem, but Yugi. And that was something that Atem strived to not go for; he wouldn't let Yugi suffer if he couldn't help it. I think that's in part largely, why Atem wouldn't bring up more tokens earlier. It meant Yugi would suffer. GOD this duel is so good the mind games and everything mmm. I love it when anyone can screw with Atem's head cause he's always so sure of himself. Nice to see cracks in the foundation sometimes.
The problem with getting game early is losing the good Marik forever, and Yami wants to help Ishizu get her brother back, even if the guy wasn’t a good guy in the time that they have known him. Yami does this because he trusts Ishizu’s word that Marik was swayed by his darker half.
Yeah... Yami Marik REALLY relied on the shadow games.

This is one of those cases where the anime suffered from censorship I think, in the manga Marik wants to destroy Yami specifically because he believes he killed his dad (later revealed to have been Yami Marik possessing him as a child and flaying his dad) but in the anime Marik is just evil for the lulz and wanting to "become the pharaoh" which greatly diminishes his out of the blue redemption

@@Sigismund697 Shadi also is to blame. While they're out in town he tells them that tragedy will soon befall them and says it's the will of the pharoah. Then after he finds his dead father Shadi says "The soul of the pharoah led your father to his death," implying it was either Atem or Atem's will for this loyal servant to die. Which is just a BS lie and set off most of Marik's evil.

I’m kind of disappointed that you didn’t mention that class system card was meant to simulate how in the manga, the Egyptian God cards have a divine hierarchy, which prevents monsters who are beneath their divine level from using their effects against them.
I've learned not enough people care about the manga to even bother checking. They say "oh I've seen season 0" and then ends it there. It's unfortunate too because I believe the anime adaptation made the duels messier because they're forcing the agreed upon ocg/tcg rules to a duel adapted from different rules and mechanics.
Level 1 is Ra, Level 2 is Slifer/Obelisk, and Level 3 is everything else.
@@MountainMemelord Actually Ra is Divine level 2, while Obelisk and Osiris are Divine level 1. And every other monster has 0. The Wicked Gods are the only exception because they’re meant to counter the Egyptian Gods.
The whole Divine Hierarchy was an absolut ass pull by Marik tho. It has like no bases on anything that happened prior (especially as Osiris Lighting Bullet worked on Obelisk during the Yugi Vs Kaiba duel) only made worse by the fact that would destroyed Ra was just controlling Black Magician and Black Magician Girl at the same time allows you to pop a monster meaning the 2 mages of black magic > level 2 god.
So I at least do agree with the Animes decision to rewrite that scene.
@@rynobehnke8289 Obelisk and Osiris were on the same level in the Divine Hierarchy, so their effects would work on each other. They don’t work on Ra though. Also the reason Black Magician and Black Magician Girl got the better of Ra is because of the Ragnarok card which was the real reason Ra was defeated.

It felt more like a recap, than anything. 😑 And what's even the point of an analysis for this duel, again? The entire Battle City arc and its dumb rules has been inconsistent throughout. 😒
I think the point was not to have Yugi win once again via plot armor but put the decision in the hands of Marik whose life was unintentionally ruined by Atem. Marik got to decide whether or not the world should be destroyed and both he and Atem are redeemed when he decides to conquer his darkness and choose to save the world.
In discussing whether or not Kuriboh could negate Ra's damage. The answer is yes. Kuriboh's damage negation is non targeting, and the Egyptian Gods can't be targeted, these facts can co-exist
Egyptian gods anime ruling is the most inconsistent the card game gets. If the plot had wanted Kuriboh not to work, it just wouldn't have worked
The Egyptian Gods go by different rules than other cards, they are unaffected by most effects, basically. So, it is unclear whether or not any given effect works on them.
In anime, the short hand of their protection effect is that they're unaffected by all effects that are not: Ragnarok and for the most part Egyptain Gods (Manga is even more complicated because tier system, Ra being at the top so unaffected by everything). The defusion play that Marik does happens because Ra can choose to be the target essentially for Marik to defuse ect
@@dracoblizzard7944 Luckily, this isn't an effect that's affecting Ra, is it? It's affecting Yugi, specifically the damage he would take. Even the way Kuriboh's effect is usually animated is throwing itself in the path of an attack and exploding.
I would also say the answer is yes because we see Yugi using it to negate the damage from Obelisk’s attack during his duel with Kaiba.

I have a question….yugi used obelisks special ability to tribute during marik’s battle phase…is that allowed? He’s pretty much attacking ra on marik’s turn.
Also, ra doesn’t go to grave until EP so how can he use his attack from beyond or is that his MP2?

I think the reason Atem didn't go for game with Obelisk was because he was trying to find a way to purge the evil out of Marik without killing the good. Hence why he waited for Yami Marik to fuse again to banish him with Ragnarok.

It’s so funny how Marik’s sister uses a graveyard lockdown strategy. I like to believe this is just in case she needs to keep Marik in check 😂
If you ask me the last quarter final parings on the blimp should’ve been Ishizu against Marik and Mai against Kaiba. On top of not too many sibling battles in the franchise, even if Mai lost to Kaiba at least she’d be able to watch the rest of the finals from the sidelines instead of being trapped in the Shadow Realm.
@@mattbartels Then who would Ishizu and Mai had to beat in order to make it to quarter finals? Both Atem, AND Jonouchi? I can see Mai beating Jonouchi, but idk 'bout Ishizu. Her deck is... quite underwhelming... compared to Atem's, and isn't exactly all great either... The reverse wouldn't have worked, either. Mai vs Atem, with Atem literally beating her, AGAIN, due to *cough* chea-, I mean plot armor. Ishizu vs Jonouchi, Ishizu wins easily by seeing the future.
So, the only final four that'd make logical sense would be, Atem, because Atem vs Seto Kiba HAS to happen, as it was foreseen by Ishizu, 'cus "destiny". And Ishizu vs Malik, where I think she put up a good fight, but would eventually lose due to Dark Malik's guilt-tripping shenanigans, psychologically manipulating Ishizu into losing by scapegoating her brother as a last ditch resort. And also, Ishizu's millennium necklace would be useless here, since her millennium necklace cannot forsee the future of OTHER millennium item wielders.
@@Evil_Beauty even if the ladies swapped their opponents to Mai vs Kaiba and Ishizu vs Marik in the quarter finals it would still result in Kaiba and Marik joining Yugi and Joey in the top four but like I said there would be less casualties in that case cos Mai losing to Kaiba wouldn’t result in her being trapped in the Shadow Realm and Ishizu’s millenium necklace would keep her safe from Marik’s shadow magic as well if that happened.
That's more of a Deckout strategy than GY lockdown. Kaiba could bring back any card he wanted from his GY. Also, Ishizu's strategy was simply a counter to Kaiba's deck devastation strategy. Marik wouldn't destroy Ishizu's deck to the point, where he'd be left with only 6 cards and Ishizu with full deck.
Let’s all be honest. If Yugi lost this duel, Kaiba would have just blown up the island like he originally did. 😂

That switch frame from Yami Yugi to Obelisk punching Marik is so simple yet so good. Also, Marik dropped like 2 cards (could be more) from getting punched. I wonder if there was a scene of him picking them back up. Can't remember 😂

I see the ref calling at that being a situation of IM not paid to be a priest, and calls the misplay he can referee without being targeted himself. Also I feel like the issue with the metal fiend token was both he didnt want yugi to suffer more than he already was, so he was trying to be tighter with the life points. Then there's the fact that he was trying to defeat yami marik WITHOUT killing normal marik, so had to make plays to make sure he could do both.
I never realized until this video how much of the duel was just the last turn (pretty sure it spanned almost 2 whole episodes). Has to be the longest battle phase in the history of Yugioh

It's funny how you can tell this duel takes place over multiple episodes because the animation keeps changing
Fun fact: in the manga Atem never successfully summoned Ra. Only time he did (in yu-gi-oh R) it was negated. I don’t know, but seems interesting.
So disappointing that Atem never gets to actually use Ra to it's full effect. It gets negated in R, he defeats Bakura in the Millennium World but it gets undone. At least he gets to use it in the anime version of Yugi vs Atem, but he basically just uses the God cards as beatsticks without going into their effects with the exception of the mandatory one which led to their downfall.
@@kyuubinaruto17 Well the only reason was because in that instance, Obelisk had its effects negated, Slifer as you said is mandatory and Ra tributing the other gods and paying all but 1 LP was probably seen as way too risky to Atem

@@TopRanger237 It was a yugioh Manga that took place between final arcs of the original Yugioh Manga. It where “The Wicked” (or evil God) cards comes from. It’s a neat story, check it out.
You know, something I like about Duel Monsters that you don't get in the later series is how the protagonists will lend each other cards for important duels. The focus on archetypes that came later means most sideboarding with their friends' cards wouldn't be very helpful, but it's still something cool that I think Duel Monsters has that the later series don't really have a thematic equivalent for.
I’m guessing Jaden using Freed and Yubel on a temporary basis in GX or Yuya inheriting and evolving Yuto’s Dark Rebellion monsters in ARC-V don’t count?
Pretty sure Yusei also frequently used the other Signer dragons

One of my favorite villains of all time. From design to mannerisms and attitude. The English dub of his first appearance was fantastic as well. Really wish he'd stuck around longer.

If Mai would have attacked directly with her Harpy Ladies she would have won instead of sacrificing them for Ra.

I love how Marik has lots of unique cards.
A lot of them have been remade modernized actually. That God Slime is a real card you can use now. Sadly a lot of his deck consists of deus ex machina. For example Blood Sucking Leech, Class System, the lizard that gives him 1000 LP per turn.
Marik's deck actually really sucks if you analyze it. Ra hard carries him, and not in a "deck built around Ra" way either.

I thought that the Metal Fiend token's maintenance cost was optional, that was why he looked to yugi to confirm hes okay loosing 1/4 of his soul for this play.

It is optional, HOWEVER Yugi would lose them . He needed to pay to keep them on the field .
Kuriboh being able to stop attacks from god cards is why I love to play them.
I believe another reason Marik didn't take the card Ragnarok was do to the reason of not having "Common Knowledge" on such a card.
He might have knowledge about the effects of Kuriboh, Di-Fusion and King Knight but Ragnarok was nothing more than another spell card for him (Maybe 🤔)
Of course, if he had taken it, Yugi would’ve won as soon as Fiend Sanctuary was activated, since he couldn’t de-fuse from Ra to escape.

@@aceclover758 Considering Kaiba was able to successfully cut and run on that after his very first duel with Dark Yugi in the manga (though not the second time), I think it’s safe to assume that Dark Marik could’ve at least made that task a chore since he still had the Millennium Rod handy.

@@aceclover758 This is what I get for conflating Season 0 like a moron. Should really know better when I’m aware that ZTV was cut in its near-entirety, Hobson was recharacterized to be sympathetic, the two chapters tying to Joey’s old school gang were composited into a single episode, and so on.

I also liked to that marik also makes his opponents uncomfortable just to mess with their minds
I could see Yugi not overplaying his hand not know what marik has so being overly cautious he only summoned enough to tribute obelisk
There was another Missplay, and actually it was similar to one of Noa's Missplays during his duel with Yugi, that being the fact that he Inmediatly activated Left Arm Offering as Soon as Yugi began his turn without any actual reason

I have to say this is without a doubt my favourite yugi-tuber series. The amount of time and effort that must go in to reverse engineering and the editing and scripting while keeping it concise enough to keep me engaged throughout, absolute masterpieces (or master peace...) of content. Thank you so much for these.

I like how at this point duelist have strategies on what thier deck win condition is. It's really nice to see how yugioh the game in the anime evolved from season 1

I really appreciate the explanation on Atem not attacking. There's a lot of thought that could go into whether it was a misplay or not, and you did a great job of laying out the facts and options at the time. You do this a lot, but it is just really refreshing every time. Especially when you cut it off at "pure speculation" territory.
14:36. Holy crap, is that a Shiny Obelisk?
Play wise this is one of the cleanest duels in the any yugioh series ever. The part about the fiend tokens can technically be swept under the rug since yugi didn't exactly know marik had metal reflect slime set, and furthermore he didn't know what metal reflect slime did anyway. Combine this with how marik had 0 monsters on his field I wouldn't call that a misplay since yugi didn't know. The only thing that even can remotely be considered a misplay is when yugi attacked with DMG instead of Obelisk. That's literally the only part that I'd consider a misplay.
Except that if Marik hadn't conceded the Pharoah would have lost. Ragnarok emptied his deck on the opponent's turn and his draw phase would kill him.
@@ravenstires1747 Ragnarok only banished Yugi's Monster cards. Marik ends his turn, Yugi draws a Spell or Trap card, Dark Magician Girl bonks Marik for game.
@@17Master yeah I'm honestly surprised that this duel was that clean playwise seeing as how it's one of the older duels of the yugioh franchise. Good Marik conceding on his own terms was cool to see since even he knew there was no way he was winning that regardless of if he wanted to continue dueling for fun.
@@ravenstires1747 uh as the video pointed out no... Ragnarock didn't banish Dark Magician Girl from the field nor his spell/trap cards... and it was Marik's battlephase with an empty hand and field. Marik had to end his turn, and then Yugi's turn Dark Magician Girl? well 2,000 attack > 1 life point.
Well, Obelisk's sacrifice effect raised it's attack to infinity, so it would have been game if he went for 5 tokens instead of 3. Though, as has been pointed out, Yugi is also holding back for good Marik's sake.
To anyone wondering about if Raganrok would of decked out Yugi, It only banishes monsters. Here's the full effect " Activate only while there are any 2 of Dark Sage, Dark Magician, Dark Magician Girl, or Magician of Black Chaos on the field. Remove from play all monsters from your hand, Deck and Graveyard. Destroy all monsters on your opponent's side of the field."
So the answer is yes

Yugi wouldnt be able to do anything after that because most of his spells and traps require monsters summoned to work.
@@GeteMachine Except he still had Dark Magician Girl on the field and she would have remained on the field. Dark Magician would have gone back to the grave as a result of Magical DImension's effect. Ragnarok has no effect on the user's field, only their hand, deck, and graveyard.

Kaiba would realistically be extremely OP because he's basically the biggest whale in the show. Only Pegasus could beat him and that's assuming he either gives himself "admin mode" cards (which he already kinda did with Toons) or otherwise just whatever is the best deck.

Shenanigans! If Marik fused with Ra is technically considered a fusion monster for the purposes of de-fusion, then according to battle city rules it can't attack on the turn it's summoned.
But Ra has an "instant attack ability" which would allow him to Attack anyway

You could look up scripted duels for that, there are a couple on RUclips using their anime decks. Obviously people prefer letting Kaiba win, but tbh his deck is generally better anyway if you ignore the plot claiming Marik was favored. Virus Cannon would completely shut down Marik's numerous ways of reviving Ra, Kaiba's monsters are stronger on average, etc.

Glad I found this channel. Love going over the old duels to see the analysis with a more modern mindset. Especially since many of these were adapted from the manga, when the game rules were being made up so to speak.
I also look forward to you possibly analyzing Yugi/Yami's first duel against Marik through his puppet 'Strings'. I can think of at least two moments in that duel that, hilariously enough, he would've defeated Slifer without having to resort to the loop combo in the end.

Wait. What would have happened if Marik scooped after initiating the shadow duel? He'd be the only living duelist, so wouldn't that be a win? I'm assuming he wouldn't get the power or the pharaoh in that case, but he'd still be a powerful shadow mage with all 3 god cards. And we know how much he enjoys killing.
Remember: If someone surrenders their life points go down to zero, IIRC Kaiba (or Joey?) stated that, so regular Marik does indeed die and Yami Marik stays forever in his body. Yugi on the other hand stays as he is since they won.
@@johanurdiales7356 Also, Marik would have had to give up his Winged Dragon of Ra to Yugi as per the ante rules of the tournament. I guess he could have bailed on that, being evil and all, but he definitely wouldn't have gotten Slifer or Obelisk from him. Literally all he would have gotten is full control of his body.
The real and more brutal answer is this: If you screw with a shadow game's rules, you are subjected to a *harsh* penalty, instigator or not. That's the point of the shadow game really, to prevent cheating. Marik would have suffered a fate worse than death and Yugi (most likely) would be fine. Edit: Also worth noting the God Cards are sentient, and Ra in particular is rather... volatile. Remember, the people who *drew* the God Cards' art did not have a good time...

One play I always thought Yugi should have made: since it was guaranteed that Marik would initiate a Shadow Game, I always thought Yugi should have started one first. Then he could have chosen the rules, AND maybe we'd get to see a little of that Season 0 Atem :P

It wasn’t. He stopped using Shadow Games after Pegasus revealed that the Millennium Items had an evil intelligence, which implied Yami was evil since he came out of the Millennium Puzzle. To prove Pegasus wrong, he never used Shadows Games again. For some reason, DM skipped this so Yami not using a Shadow Game again is never explained. The dub somewhat fixed this, funny enough, by making Yugi the one forcing Yami to not use Shadow Games after he nearly killed Kaiba.
I loved the Expression of Marik when he got Punched by Obelisk that must have hurt, he was smocking too
I really enjoy these videos & can't wait for more, also here's something interesting, Roland never questions Atem about placing Fiend's sanctuary on the field without looking at it in the dub that's a sub only thing.
