Just felt the exact same need of expression.. it's nice too see and understand all you/us people out here that vibe to this, our corky but beautiful side of the world:)
I did it with an identical PWM board on an old portastudio mf-p01 with good results, although I need to install a switch to go between the original PWM board and the new one since the syncing of the record/play of the 4 tracks is calibrated for the stock PWM board. Without it, it's impossible to record something and have it play back at the same pitch, which is not ideal for multitracking.
"Look at the fancy knob". Perhaps my favourite quote of 2021. It's always a pleasure to watch your videos, Simon. Music, electronics, humour, surrealism - expertly blended. Best wishes from Moscow.
This episode: Simon discovers that it doesn't really matter what words (or synth) you use, because everything sounds dope when you record it to wobbly slowed down tape. "Nothing like a little finger on the flange."
Thank you Simon for all the joy! You might be my most loved "not personally known" being in the world. Glad to know you are out there, as well as the rest of you punky unicorns!
Yeah, that *was* insanely creepy and I fawkin loved it 😂 Such a simple mod that added so much more versatility in something I would otherwise consider useless in my setup... And now I want one
RUclips automatically unsubscribed me from your channel, I was wondering why you stopped showing up in my feed. I was missing my magpie, love your videos dude
Lol, this one is up there in my books, Simon🤘🏼😄 Now to jump down the 80's Philips synthesizer rabbit hole... PS, what are those orange and green pads on the shelf that look like Roland SPD:ONE's?
On any mechanical motor a pwm will always work. It’s basically turning the power on & off to maintain the speed you’re aiming for. Where using a potentiometer to change the amount of power getting to the motor to slow it down will eventually reach a point it won’t power the motor any more.
I agree but that's a pretty good machine that would be a shame to kill if a bend went wrong. I'd aim for modding it more until a lot of use has been gotten from it before bending it!
That pwm control board is exactly what I need for my cassette speed controller! It seems so obvious now, since I’ve tried a lot of the wrong ways to do it!
Ever since I got into analog gear it also got me into opening them up and repairing things on my own. So this type of stuff really interests me. What do you suggest for someone just starting out with stuff like this? Like what’s a good entry level thing for modifying gear?
For getting better at actual repair: find stuff with noisy pots, bad output jacks, or dodgy power supply caps, and replace those components. Good way to get vintage stuff cheap, practice soldering, tracing problems, and otherwise learning how to do the thing right. As far as stuff that has simple mods that sound good, a couple I like: - Hing Hon EK-001 keyboards use a simple 555 oscillator to generate a square wave. You can find them in various forms at dollar stores and thrift shops for under $10 (do *not* pay stupid eBay prices. These are not collectible. They are worth $10). Tons of mods & ideas documented online. - Danelectro FAB effects pedals. The Echo pedal in particular has several easy mods, can be re-housed with little trouble, and genuinely sounds good. Their original retail price was stupid cheap - like $20 - and they're still a steal. - Adding PWM control to things using prefab boards (see also: this video). - Replacing clock crystals on sound toys with VCOs (once again, using prefab boards... thank you China). - Read Nicholas Collins' "Hardware hacking". One of the classic intro-level books on the subject; easy projects, great "for dummies" style tutorials.
Do you have to wire directly to power, or could you just use the green/blue wires that were there? That way the regular buttons still work, but the knob is just modifying the speed.
Im wanting to experiment with ambient guitar pedals. Ive been looking at the Astral Destiny but its $200 and I can't decide nor commit. Are there any suggestions you can give me to help out?
@Simon The Magpie Why don't you use a wallwart/powersupply, it works on a normal 9V 500mA power supply. Saves you a lot of headache and batteries...I have one and always have it plugged in...Just so you know...
idk if anyone mentioned but you could've tried putting in a voltag starve pot ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ also a bypass switch to get the original voltage if needed (for anything data this should be very tricky with your solution) would've been a smart solution.
It really sounded likle the synth was saying JIJ.. JIJ... JIJ... at the creepy part sinds its a dutch synth that makes alot of sense cause Jij means you in dutch... very creepy...
"red is positive and black is negative". Says simple Simon... the Magpie. LOL Um... you'd think so, but I perform IT related services and even repair computers and electronics, and you have no idea how many times I saw these wires reversed on "Made in China" electronics. Gosh, even a couple of times - laptops. Worse yet, more expensive electronics may have reverse polarity protection built in, but I have seen red and black used as data send/receive cables and blue and green as power cables... So yeah... needless to say: ALWAYS VOLTAGE TEST FIRST. (Also - I wouldn't recommend going "really fast" on old tape decks, it could be recipe #1 for getting the tape chewed up or torn, should the auto stop function be compromised or simply not fire quickly enough).
I’m so happy to see you back in my subscription feed magpie. You always bring me happiness.
Agree
@@bychristopherewing The same over here!

So glad this non commercial stuff is still around on RUclips.
I'm inclined to modify a regular cassette recorder this way... And not wait until I can find a keyboard/cassette combo.

I knew the backward vinyl demons but not the slow tape synth. That was sick!
I cracked tf up at his response
Thank you Simon for all the joy! You might be my most loved "not personally known" being in the world. Glad to know you are out there, as well as the rest of you punky unicorns!
As Hainbach says "everything sounds better at 1/2 speed" Nice job.
your videos are like poison getting me interested in analog music production every once in a while
Everytime Simon says "Very Nice" I immediately think of Borat. If Borat was a circuit bending synth experimentalist.
For sale: Phillips cassette player synth combo. sold as is. Definitely not haunted or possessed by a demon named yay.
Without the vocals, the track feels like it’s a “drunk too much but feel just right” kinda song. Everything is slow and merry.
Yeah, that *was* insanely creepy and I fawkin loved it 😂 Such a simple mod that added so much more versatility in something I would otherwise consider useless in my setup... And now I want one
Dude U a genius. Glad to have been watching you for longtime that way down the road I b like yea I watched him longer than you did!
Your voice when you said very nice brings Borat to mind....very niceeeeeee
wow best title for a youtube video i ever read!!! must watch

Truly inspiring, you made my day with this one. Thanks.

Or make a multi speed transmission gear set for the tape drive gears. 👍🏽 true analog
You literally made the thing speak to you! "Yeeeay"
I second Glitchlo. Your creativity alone and wild personality always charm.
It doesn't really matter what words I use, but these are for you 🌅 that is a vibe if I ever felt one
Love your videos man

Your face when the FM brass sound became the demon voice cracked me up.
one of the best groove you made Imo
amazing as always, this would be so fun to play with
Made my day. Inspiring stuff. Many thanks.
i think i will stick around to hear the sound. its great to see more videos magpie!
Definitely needs a circuitbend as well....please do ?
Nice vocals brother.

“Could’ve been a cool segue” it still was
I thought he was gonna talk about some new design but it was even better that he didn’t lol
That was mad good! You rock magpie
What is that yello base syth thing??
Just now realized that you are some sort of a Ali G alternative version :D only a compliment
Woah. The demon sound at the end makes me want one
Smart to just work with the motor. I thought you were going to try to pitch the sounds. I think it sounds great.
"That was insanely creepy! Let's not do that again..."
Kinda sounds like something off of the Earthbound OST... Cool!
vaporwave machine
11:10 " Yeti ! Yeti ! Yeti ! Yeti ! Yeti ! Yeti ! " I think you purchased an Abominable Snowman cursed device, Simon.

Drunken Pirate shanty...very niice.
Reminds me of early music by Granddaddy
Brilliant stuff!
This will end up in a Paranormal movie true story where you disappear, and all that's left is a demon tape.
The "yay" demon was like if satan was doing a fluttershy impression
