  • Liner lock over-travel (on both my 6" and 4" samples). Otherwise, a knife with a lot of potential for a surprisingly low price.

My problem on both was opposite. The liner lock wasn't catching except a hair on the blade. After about an hour of opening and closing, it finally began to seat with the full liner hitting the blade's back. I couldn't even use the safety slide until I had it broken in. Still, I have to really aggressively flip either blade to get the full liner lock to engage. With the lightest of pressure, the liner can move aside and allow the blade to fold, so I use the sliding lock. I do love the knife. Thank you for all your great content and reviews. Take Care and Stay Safe.

The Luzon XL was my first xl folder. Mine is a pre-GSM and I have not had the issue with the liner-lock jamming. I like using mine with a rather large lanyard that will loop my thumb and wrap across the back of hand, locking into my hand very well in an extended grip. Just have to deal with a pretty big lanyard. My Luzon has become a garden tool for me once I moved on to xl folders that carry better for me. I like the Luzon and it was a great affordable entry into xl sized folders. I prefer the triad lock for my xl folders now. My serrated talwar xl gets a lot of pocket time currently but today, I have the frenzy in my pocket. Great videos!

Great video Mike! The Luzon XL was my very first Cold Steel knife. I liked it so much, I got two of them (one to give to my daughter) but after excessive fidgeting, the over travel problem started, just like yours. Then come to find out, that particular lock has actually failed! I gave my daughter a gunsite counter point instead. Come to find out later on that Cold Steel not only has one of the lousiest liner locks but also one of the best too. Like the liner lock on their Ti-lite knives, IMO, the Ti-lite has probably the best liner lock in the business!!! It is the only liner lock that I trust. It is a real "SHAME" that Cold Steel (GSM) has not fixed that lock problem, by using a better lock, which they already HAVE!!! SMH! I still have the same two Luzons and still love their looks but, lite to medium use only...

I really love the Luzon, but the lock up issue is a massive issue for me. I've had to take mine completely to pieces to unlock it, which takes two screwdrivers! The Ti Lite has a better lock but it's on a straight part of the handle. You can't have flippers with the Triad Lock.

Mike, Love your channel. I have a 6" Luzon with the same problem if deployed with too much flourish. My knife is worn a bit so I can use my finger to push the liner and close it. You can move the liner lock back and forth a bit as I have and be able to push it back with your finger. No tools needed. Please keep your knife and sword programs coming.

I have a few years old Luzon Large. It jams on occasion when i pocket deploy it, but I think of it as either not very bad or good. I can pop that liner lock back out with a car key which I always have. Also, if it's a defensive situation it's another reason that the blade can't close on my fingers 😎

Finishing Up the video. Great video. I've had my 6" Luzon for almost 2 years now. Learning to pocket it was a bit of a learning curve as big pockets are needed and I've never handled a folding knife this large. Only times I've had it jam up on me was the first time trying to pull it out... I dropped it, it opened itself and locked itself open. Had to use a tool to unstick the lock. Second time was also due to a drop but I gave it a little tap on the concrete from the back of the blade was enough to unlock it and since then it's never locked like that again.

It's a common problem with liner locks, they are a poor choice if you want to baton or do some chopping. The Luzon is no exception. This design is mostly for slicing, thrusting and showing off (in line with any Balisong). :)

@@michaelrizzo5523 Out of the box the Luzon is fine, I got one in OD green (CS-20NQX-ODSW) recently and it doesn’t jam. I would never chop or baton with it though. You can do some gentle batoning with regular folders in general when the blade is unlocked in a 90 degree position to avoid damaging the mechanism. CS should make one with a triad lock. :)

The gravity flick problem carries over to the ti lite 6 inch as well. I believe I mentioned this before but tweaking the pivot screw to the sweet spot is essential. Then, loctite that bad dog!!! Lol, really though it will require occasional maintenance. They need to address this but without Lynn in charge I doubt it will.

I’ve never really liked liner locks for any hard use knife. I’m just 3 minutes into the video and I pretty much figured out what the problem was likely to be. I’ll never give up my Voyager XL clip point or any of my other Voyager XL’s for anything with a liner lock.

Interesting knife. Because of a bad experience I've had with liner locks (lock shifting out of the way and blade closing on my pinky in reverse grip) I'm not a fan of liner locks unless it's a crkt auto lawks but interesting knife.
Just a thought, have you considered taking the knife apart and sanding/polishing the end of the liner lock? I've done that on a few liner locks for people to good effect. It can help with the whole jamming thing and makes the opening even smoother.

I got the small one, It's a pretty nice edc. I picked it up cause I thought it was cool and I wanted something with a little more oomf and lock security than my other cheap folders. The knife definitely requires a pretty intensive break in-- open and close it, open and close it, again and again ad nauseum. Did you experience lock jam on the smaller model or just the large?

Big and small, with triad would be perfect. The Ti-lite series is the same, stilleto ish blade but liner lock, however no extra safety lock but the grip is way more rounded.

I'm sorry if I'm off topic guys. I just went nuts on Amazon and spent a thousand dollars on knives this week. I was SO DISAPPOINTED. I bought 3 very big ass expensive knives from Cold Steel. I got a Natchez Bowie and a Trailmaster in CPM3V. The grind lines REALLY SUCK. ON BOTH that's all I'm saying. Then I ordered a SAN MAI TRAILMASTER from Japan on Amazon. The advertising said hand made in Japan in limited numbers. 6 days later I was sent a TAWAINESE San Mai Trailmaster and IT'S NOTHING in quality like the Japanese ones ...not even close! GSM COLD STEEL TRULY SUCKS! I own a Laredo Bowie in CPM3V and it's nearly PERFECT and super sharp the grind lines are 99.99 percent it looks like the old school quality Cold Steel. These new knives make me want to VOMIT! I'm literally sending back a thousand dollars in Cold Steel blades. I thoroughly looked over all the blades that I just got and the quality just doesn't justify the price!!!
I'm truly done with expensive Cold Steel knives for awhile. I think they totally f-ck up on CPM3V big blades. The grinds are so wonky! I also have a SRK and magnum tanto 12 in cpm3v and they seem to be near perfect. This new purchase was so irritating that I went to another online vendor and back ordered a Japanese San Mai Trailmaster. I asked them to verify that it was indeed Japanese stamped before they ship it. I just needed a Cold Steel big knife fix. I ALMOST FEEL LIKE A KNIFE JUNKIE.....lol....I just needed some big knife satisfaction! That Rolling Stone song comes to mind " I can't get no satisfaction" when I buy Cold Steel big expensive blades these days. Cold Steel you guys need to shape up because your quality is going WAY DOWN HILL!
