  • Academy Award-winning director Asghar Farhadi talks to Mike Leigh about his latest film, the captivating Cannes Grand-Prix winner A Hero.
    Asghar Farhadi has been making films since 2003, starting with Dancing in the Dust (2003), The Beautiful City (2004) and Fireworks Wednesday (2006). He gained international recognition with his impressive 2009 drama About Elly, which was awarded the Silver Bear for Best Director at Berlin and was Iran's submission for Best Foreign Film at the Academy Awards. In 2011, his riveting and suspenseful family drama A Separation attracted international acclaim, winning him the Golden Bear at Berlin and both an Academy Award and Golden Globe for Best Foreign Language Film. He repeated his Oscar success in 2016 with The Salesman.
    In addition to his Iranian dramas, Farhadi travelled to France to make The Past (2013), starring Bérénice Bejo and Tahar Rahim. And in 2018 he cast Penélope Cruz and Javier Bardem in the Spanish-set Everybody Knows.
