I bought my first bow a few weeks back (drunk purchase). Absolutely love it. Still very new but I’m hitting targets. It’s all about getting the practice in now. Loving RUclips videos like this.
Thanks for the shout out. Good video, I have been putting off making a video about this due to the fact of the amount of variations, it is head spinning.
I went to Cabela's and was encouraged to get the heaviest bow I could draw 45 lb for a newbie was way too much. I very much enjoy shooting bow and went and got a lighter bow elsewhere. He didn't even sell me the correct arrows for the poundage of my bow. Thanks for the tips and tricks
Some good info. My wife and I recently took up traditional archery. I bought a Samick Sage with a 30# draw thinking that we could both learn on it. That 30# draw proved to be more than my wife could handle comfortably, so I bought her a PSE takedown in 20# draw weight. The beauty of these take down bows, as you expressed, is that as we both get stronger I can put my 30# limbs on her bow and buy a set of 40# limbs for my bow. This is an incredibly cost effective way to advance in the sport. I also appreciate that you are not dogmatic in "aiming" concepts. We have chosen to pursue the more instinctive, or better intuitive, model of the sport. I also appreciate that after you have purchased your bows and arrows and other kit, we can go out into our back yard and shoot until we're too tired, at no cost. We love going to the shooting range, but with range fees, ammo, and travel time, we just don't get to do it very often. Unless it's raining, we can put arrows down range anytime. This is such a great sport.
Your style is exactly the kind of teaching I enjoy. Practical, understanding of personal preferences and styles, and able to break down the basics without talking down to your audience/students. Keep up the great work. Can't wait to get to the local range soon and give this a try.
I love the advice here. When I was welding I had a few great teachers. The best one said this. Learn how to set up, learn your metallurgy, learn your machine. Develop your muscle memory and develop fixtures to help. Learn everything you can from different welders in methods and style. Fill your knowledge bag up, shake it all up and develop what works best for you. Then.... every minute of every shift on every set up and bead, try to make it better than the last one. It'll take you 3 months to be passable and basic. A year or two to be good. 5 years to be proficient. And 15 to 20 to be great. The next 15 years I worked on everything from structural steel, aerospace titanium, and submarine vessels. I'm hoping I can develop my archery a little faster.
Great video. Thanks for explaining the basics for beginners! You represent the sport well. The wife and I are going to check out the local shop and give archery a go.
Jus got into archery, I decided on a black hunter 35lb recurve. Absolutely addicted! Love it. Been shooting a 100 arrows a day, I'm not too bad already. Watching loads for tips! 👍🏴
great information I just ordered my first traditional bow a pse anthem so I'm watching as many videos as I can on traditional archery I subscribed and hit the notification bell I look forward to many more great tips and techniques thanks
Started with a 15# longbow at 7 years old. Switched to 30# longbow at 10 years old. After 3 years of rabbits I purchased a 45# Indian Archery longbow to use on Catskill Mountain whitetails. Now I use a 50# reflex-deflex longbow. I have always shot "off the shelf" or knuckle. I will admit trying out compound bows with sights but that didn't last very long. My newest interest is Asian (Korean) style bamboo horse bows and bamboo arrows. My longbows will still get used and I will still make a few Juniper longbows but am really enjoying my new bamboo horse bow.
Great video . As someone new into archery and just bought a bow today, Galaxy Sage Elite, this was so helpful. I have watched MANY videos and read a lot and you take it simply step by step. Want to get a quiver and see so many different ones. Ideas on that and also a video in more detail on arrows, suggestions of which best for different uses. Thanks again for sharing and the help and look forward to more of your videos.

As a three-time state champion and ranked National Marksman in the Army National Guard competitions Winston P Wilson national match I have been devoted to firearms for a long time and I am looking to make my first step into archery I have played around with compound bows and I am taking your advice buying a cheap recurve and getting motivated into a low poundage recurve bow thanks for this video it was just what I needed.
I have to say this was great Jon, this helped me to understand where to start from, as I will be building my archery system. I think this will make a super informative series. Learning about the arrow types, split vision, you covered it all. Thank you!
John, this is a video I have been waiting for a long time! Especially about traditional archery! Very well done and explained! Thanks a lot! Cheers, Marc
Thanks for the advise about "Over-bowing" I was going to get an 80lb draw weight longbow to start off with for hunting. Seeing as ive never(well not since I was a kid) drew a bow before and I'm not Mr. He-man I can see that would have been mistake. I want to be able to practice sure but I also maybe want to hunt with it a well.
Good tips, recommendations & guidelines John! I still have an old Fred Bear Grizzly bow I got years ago, but shoot a lighter bow now since it has been too long . Keep up the great videos!!
I had the same bow, I loved that think, and I thought I was going pass it along to my son. Well one day I pulled back and it shattered on me, im man enough to admit that I cried for a few minutes afterwards. Anyway awesome bow
@@Wingman115 so I have been bowhunting over 40 years shot plenty of deer every year. I pulled out my old Ben Pearson 45 pound recurve and still trying to figure out arrows. Are you shooting wood or carbon?
I shoot a 45# recurve bare finger, with 3 under. I string walk for different yardage, it’s all about tuning the arrows to the bow weight! And personally I shoot carbon arrows with goose feather fletching. At least 10 grains per 10 pounds of bow weight.
All very good tips on archery. One thing that is so often overlooked in, not only this sport but in fire arms training as well, is breathing. Proper breathing techniques are very important in maintaining accuracy especially after any kind of physical exertion like a strenuous hike or run.
Awesome video! I just got my first bow a couple days ago. Can't wait to get it set up! Quick question, where can I get a quiver like yours? Can't seem to find anything similar. Thanks in advance man
@@Wingman115 Thank you! I'm super stoked. About the quiver, I couldn't find the one you were wearing on your back in the link. Just the one that goes on the bow itself. Is the one on your back not available anymore?
What a great Video, I am a total newbie to Archery and awaiting delivery of a new Bear Grizzly which is the Bow that I was most drawn to, I hope the 45lb proves to be the right choice.
Also, saw a pretty longbow that also felt SO good in my hand. But thought recurve as a beginner was best idea. Would like to see difference on longbow vs recurve, suggestions for them and also difference in hybrid.
With respect, go to a local shop and shoot both. Depending on your application - Field, 3D, flu-flu, hunting.... will have pros and cons for each type of bow.
I have a question pls. help. I am left eye dominant that means according to the rule I should be holding a right hand bow. However, I am comfortable shooting a left hand bow and holding the bow with my right hand. What should I do?
So my husband bought me a beginner's bow for Christmas and I finally had a chance to shoot it this past weekend (you weren't kidding about the archer's tattoo, btw!). The thing is, it has a shelf for the arrow to sit on, but the arrows have plastic veins, not feather fletching. Is there a particular reason it might come with the "incorrect" type of arrows, and would it be better to get some that have feathers instead?
Hey Wingman, Awsome video. You do a great job of explaining thing in a matter of fact, simple way so we don't have to be brain surgeons to understand. I have one question that is bugging me though. When you release the shot, what do you do with the fingers holding the string? Do you just relax them and let the string tension pull the string from your fingers or do you consciously open your fingers to release the shot, or do you use the back tension so when you pinch the shoulder blade back it kind of pulls the string out of your fingers? Thanks again, love your work mate. 🤙
Good video. I need to practice more to get better. I still have not figured out glove or tab, and Three under or split finger yet and I need to gain strength in my back and shoulder . a friend advised me to shoot only three arrows a day so I do not develop bad habits. I am going to start this on Monday 27 November. I will let you know how i am progressing.
Split finger or Three under is a personal choice. You will find what works best for you. As for only shooting 3 arrows a day.. Well I would shoot at least 30 working my way up to 100 a day. Work on your draw and release the rest will take care of itself. Remember to have fun and keep shooting. Keep in touch and let me know how your doing. If you have FaceBook shoot me a message on the Wingman115 page.
Great vid 👍 I haven’t replied in a comment in a long time .. went from compound.. few years break .. then wanted to do recurve with no sites and no club .. couldn’t work out why my vanes keep rubbing!!! And how That blubber rest works and which way the Caine should go to the rest !! 🙄 the guy at the gun shop wasn’t helpful.. but I didn’t know I would have a problem with vanes and a rubber arrow rest .. from what I got off your vid .. u need feather flechers?? So they don’t touch ? Sorry I had a few 🥃
Awesome vid. I got the samick sage about a week ago @ 45lb only because it was the only one i could get locally. I wanted to hold and feel it. Now its a little too heavy draw weight. Do you suggest i order 35lb limbs or just get used to the 45?
Yes for me it is. Only difference is your point on. Three under gets the arrow nock closer to you eye. Shoot what feels better for you and practice like crazy.
Very cool, just been watching some of them this evening. I'm just getting back into archery after a few decades away from it and my specific interest is traditional archery so I'm totally appreciating your vids on that, thanks for doing them and hope to see more!
Hey that's the archery glove I use :P I got an archery tattoo when an archery school made me use my off hand to shoot and didn't give us equipment, I have no idea why. I then immediatly switched to a different bow for my right hand and showed everybody else up :P I never went back there clearly
Great video. Thanks! What type of arrows do you recommend for stump shooting? I'd think stumps are pretty hard on arrows, so do you need aluminum arrows?
A lot of the basics he talked about reminds me of shooting guns, I wonder, what about breathing? Is there breathing techniques involved in shooting bows and arrows?
Thanks, very useful! I've been interested in and dabbled with archery for years, just now getting into it more seriously. So if I understand you correctly, I can use the "ledge" with feather fletches but anything rigid in the fletches I should use a guide of some sore? Also, what about those fuzzy things on your bowstring. What role do they serve?
For 3d shooting I try to have the same stance. But for hunting you have to move a bit.. The ground and animals don't care about my stance. I practice moving all over. Thanks for watching.
What's that fluffy thing at the top of the string? I see it on a lot of bows but I don't know what it is. Also I'm planning to get in to archery, looking at buying the Samick Sage Takedown Recurve Bow, I've already tried it out and 35 pounds is my draw weight.
I really do make a conscious effort to try to support American made products and to my surprise the majority of these wooden bows being sold on Landcaster Archery or Amazon are all bows made in Asia. The only true reputable American brand I know is made by Fred bear and generally a wooden Recurve bow from them starts around $400 price point. Makes me wonder if there’s a genuine craftsmanship and quality difference from the cheap Amazon $200 Asian bows to something like a Fred bear recurve bow ? This is all stuff I need to do research on. What’s your thoughts on the subject is there a difference in quality and craftsmanship ??
+David Haworth 30 pound would be perfect. With your height your draw is probably past 28" inches. So for every inch past 28 there would be a increase of draw weight from 1-2 pounds. Let me know what you get.
You mentioned Byron Ferguson. I think he might use a style of gap shooting. The way he tilts his head and cants the bow. I saw a video of how Howard hill style shooting. It's a type of gap shooting. I wonder if Byron Ferguson got some inspiration from Howard hills style.

Yes for me it is. Only difference is your point on. Three under gets the arrow nock closer to you eye. Shoot what feels better for you and practice like crazy.
@@Wingman115 thanks
Cool vid! I hope you're still doing traditional archery vids.
I have a few on the channel. Thanks for watching.
Very cool, just been watching some of them this evening. I'm just getting back into archery after a few decades away from it and my specific interest is traditional archery so I'm totally appreciating your vids on that, thanks for doing them and hope to see more!
Well done Man, loved the vid and the info. :)
Thank you sir.
Hey that's the archery glove I use :P
I got an archery tattoo when an archery school made me use my off hand to shoot and didn't give us equipment, I have no idea why. I then immediatly switched to a different bow for my right hand and showed everybody else up :P I never went back there clearly
Good stuff my friend. Keep shooting.
Wingman115 I will
Great video. Thanks! What type of arrows do you recommend for stump shooting? I'd think stumps are pretty hard on arrows, so do you need aluminum arrows?
+dghboy315 I use aluminum with a judo point to keep them from getting to stuck and their also easy to find in the grass.
What quiver is that looks nice!!
Yes, asking the same
Bear Archery leather back quiver.
Very informative! I really enjoyed this video.
Thank you.
A lot of the basics he talked about reminds me of shooting guns, I wonder, what about breathing? Is there breathing techniques involved in shooting bows and arrows?
Ravnar 777 basically the same as with firearms
I don’t think it’s like guns but I think it is a bit
Thanks, very useful! I've been interested in and dabbled with archery for years, just now getting into it more seriously. So if I understand you correctly, I can use the "ledge" with feather fletches but anything rigid in the fletches I should use a guide of some sore? Also, what about those fuzzy things on your bowstring. What role do they serve?
+13noman1 Thanks for watching. Yes shoot the feathered arrows from the shelf. The fuzzy things are string vibration dampeners.
how do u make sure your foot placement is consistent? Or do you? When shooting instinctive?
For 3d shooting I try to have the same stance. But for hunting you have to move a bit.. The ground and animals don't care about my stance. I practice moving all over. Thanks for watching.
Excellent Video!!! Thanks!!!!
+Cameron Izatt thanks.
Very cool, thank you!
So...to shoot arrows with vanes you have to have an arrow rest? Or should you not shoot vanes at all with a recurve bow?
Depends on what type of arrows you want to shoot with.
Whats that fuzzy ball on your string do ?
String silencers.
i am still using my "Indian Archery"#50 Bighorn recurve. That i bought in the early 70's.
👍🏻👊🏻
What's that fluffy thing at the top of the string? I see it on a lot of bows but I don't know what it is. Also I'm planning to get in to archery, looking at buying the Samick Sage Takedown Recurve Bow, I've already tried it out and 35 pounds is my draw weight.
They dampen string vibration.
What’s your thoughts on the subject is there a difference in quality and craftsmanship ??
you answered my questions.. thanks so much
+pshaskins1 Glad to help.
I am a 6'2" 220 pound eighty year old looking for a new hobby. I have no desire to hunt and I'm thinking a 30# bow, what do you think?
+David Haworth 30 pound would be perfect. With your height your draw is probably past 28" inches. So for every inch past 28 there would be a increase of draw weight from 1-2 pounds. Let me know what you get.
You mentioned Byron Ferguson. I think he might use a style of gap shooting. The way he tilts his head and cants the bow. I saw a video of how Howard hill style shooting. It's a type of gap shooting. I wonder if Byron Ferguson got some inspiration from Howard hills style.
He may have. I know he is one fine shooter.
Nice video. I want to shoot instinctive but second guess myself. Almost 57, can this old dog learn a new trick?
Oh yes no problem.
