I'm a woman, and i hold the door open for everybody, man, woman ,child, disabled, old, whatever....not just to be courteous, but i hope that someone is holding the door for me when i need it!
A number of years ago, I held the door open for a young woman who turned around and told me to "F... Off"........ I'm guessing she has 'man' problems. Just a sign of the times I suppose.

I was asked “why do you wear a cowboy hat”? I had to reply that a Cowboy hat is the perfect hat. It keeps the sun out of your eyes, keeps rain off your head, gives you shade in the summer and warmth in the cold.
I just turned 73 and have a black Resistol 3XXX that my stepson, who was 5 at the time, dug out of his toy box and gave to me shortly after we first met. It was CRUSHED flat, but I knocked it out and put it on and amazingly it was a perfect fit! I reshaped it, keep it clean using a clothes brush and have proudly worn that hat most days for the past 34 years. My son can't believe I still wear that old second hand hat from his toy box.

My parents always ask me why I fell in love with the cowboy lifestyle and would rather be on a horse or around a bunch guys wearing a cowboy hat and boots then be around people they hang out with. This is why! I’ve always had the same morals and values as most of them
I feel similar when it comes to our family barbecues. I personally sit by myself or with a lady friend or… with some of the moms. I almost never sit at “the guys table” or congregate with a large group because I find that I don’t really share the same interests or talk the same or talk about women the same, etc. it’s just different. So I allow myself to perhaps look like the oddball and just hang out on my own at those gatherings.
In the Native American way all women are to be respected and one of the main reasons is because they are the givers of life. This is why we Native Americans call earth, mother earth because earth gives life to all living creatures. Also you forgot to mention never lay a hat on the bed LoL
My favorite every day lid is a XXXX Stetson. Not an $850 hat to be sure, but I treat it as if it were. Your advice is sound. Manners have somewhat gone out of fashion, but I still practice traditional etiquette whenever possible. I may not be able to change other people's habits, but I can still set an example.
I was raised with four younger sisters. It was instilled in me from an early age that as the big brother I was to “look after the girls”. And I did so unconsciously. My sisters never had any “trouble” from any of my male friends nor theirs. Men are and should be the protectors of women. Some deserve it and accept it and some resent it. You know who you are. Showing respect and showing courtesy doesn’t cost extra. It’s part of the “social lubricant” that helps us get along in society. Love the vids.
Very good advice. Most all I have known from an early age from my Uncle Norman. He was a real live working cowboy out in Montana. One situation you didn't mention is removing your hat when theres a funeral procession passing by. Being a gentleman towards the ladies is just the right thing to do. Thank you for doing this.

Was once in a funeral procession for a family member. As we went by a local high school baseball practice, those boys took their hats off and held them over their hearts. One of the most moving things I’ve ever seen.
Not disagreeing with you, but I am still "old" school. The first 2 items of clothing I was given (after a real cloth diaper) was a pair of cowboy boots and a cowboy hat. Grew up on a ranch/farm. So, I never wear a hat inside. If there is a roof over my head the hat comes off. Especially in a house ( mine or anyone else) church, a courthouse or a restaurant. If I don't have a good place to sit the hat at the restaurant to protect it, I hold it in my hand any time the waitress walks by and I sit it in the chair next to me or hang it on the back of the chair if possible. I try to tip my hat at any lady as I walk by and you're right most really do appreciate it. Those that don't aren't worth discussing. Old school common courtesy is still out there its just harder to find sometimes.
I have to agree with you. I didn't see anything in this video that would make want to unsubscribe but the one place I would disagree with Dewayne is the hat at the dinner table. I never say anything out loud about it but I really dislike all those that wear there ball cap, or any kind of hat, to the table, even or especially in a restaurant. A public place is where you should show your best manners, even if you are concerned about where you'll put your hat because of how much it cost. Being a little embarrassed by your hat hair is a small price to pay for good manners.

We were taught cover (Marine term for "hat") etiquette in the Marine Corps. starting in boot camp. You don't wear your uniform cover indoors, ever, and if it is a non-uniform cover you take it off when the national anthem plays and place your hand over your heart. In uniform you salute cover on when it plays outdoors, cover off salute when indoors. They gave us a ton of rules for both uniform and non-uniform covers. My second tour I had a company Gunny who was a big stickler for proper etiquette in and out of uniform, even on libbo if he caught you walking with your hands in your pockets or some other cardinal sin like walking and eating etc. you could pretty much count on spending several hours trimming the grass outside the CP with a little tiny scissors or some other useless task like filling a sandbag and then run carrying it around the CP multiple times and then dumping it out back where you started and refilling it and repeating said exercise until he got tired of watching you do it. My first tour I had a sergeant who would make you run stairs in a high rise building wearing your gas mask for etiquette violations and or because he was bored. To this day I still don't walk with my hands in my pockets.
I don’t know about the Marine Corps first hand, but in the army you keep your headgear on indoors ONLY if you’re armed. Otherwise yeah, it’s a hard rule.
Everything you said was Gospel, been wearing a Hat (cowboy hat) since I was sixteen and been doing everything you said since then (tipping hat, opening doors etc) still hold my wife’s(of thirty+ years) hand everywhere. Whether someone is holding the door for me, or I hold the door for them, I always try to smile and say, "thank you" or "your welcome (no problem, sure thing--whatever phrase you use)" It's simply about being polite to each other. I agree with everything you’ve said. I grew up back east (65 now) and been living out west for 45 years. One thing I do know …if I didn’t hold a door for a woman my Mother would slap me from the grave. We were all taught respect for our elders ,women ,police and those who served in the service ( for us it was the WW2 and Korean vets) Seems these days younger folks all want respect and let you know about it at the drop of a hat. And the majority of them haven’t earned a place at the back of the latrine line. A bit harsh I know .i do miss the days when respect given to those who earned it through hard work and a life well lived
Love the comments about women. My love is very much a modern woman, but I can always see in her face the happiness when I open the car door or a door to a building. She understands my old fashioned ways and very much appreciates it.
If I may be frank, when I first discovered your channel I exclusively started going after the “cigar talk” type videos where you give advice and such and skipped over the horse, leather, and hat videos, etc. I am so glad I went back and started watching each video from oldest to this one because your videos teach so much more along with the thing itself you’re taking about. Dear Sir, one observation when brushing with either the hat sponge or a natural fiber brush you need to mind the direction. Most hats you want to go counter clockwise around the crown and brim, front to back on top and clockwise on the underside of the brim. Reason for this is when the hat body is made the fur swirls around a conical form in one direction. You can tell if you stroke your hat it’ll feel slightly but noticeably rougher in one direction than the other. find the smooth way and keep your cleaning motion in that smooth direction, with the grain so to speak. During manufacturing hats are “pounced”, sanded, yes with sand paper to cut any fuzzy hairs and even out the felt. Periodically, a clean hat can be spruced up even removing light stains by pouncing. The best handiest thing I’ve found is the smother side of an Emory board, right, those cheap disposable nail files. Don’t ask me how a come to try that, well I play guitar and banjo so I usually have one around and one day I looked at my hat that I made myself by the way, looked at my nail file and just went at it. With the grain lightly working my way around the hat and dog gone it, it did a more than reasonable job. Keep up the good work

I have never seen your videos till now. It's only the second one that I have watched. You have gotten a new subscriber. I have a great deal of respect for you and your thoughts. Especially on etiquette and how to treat a woman. That is EXACTLY how my daddy raised me. To treat a lady with respect. I thank you for being honest about it and applaud you for your thoughts. I will be watching more of your videos but this will be my favorite. I am just an old farmer from back in the day. Another great video, Duane. Thank you for the great advice! All of it was good. I didn't know about the sponge. Having one for each color makes sense. It's just like a shoe or boot brush. I always thought of having a black hat, but I didn’t know that black hats bleed. Yes. Please set all cowboy and dress hats down on the crown or hang them in a manner that you don't damage the hat. I'm old school I take my hat off indoors, no matter where I am. Also, I remove my hat when someone is praying and when the National Anthem is playing. Also, I remove my hat when I eat, always - indoors or outdoors. If it's raining, I try to duck under something if possible. Absolutely. Tip you hat to a lady. Finally, Duane, you can chase a rabbit anytime. Your point about ladies was well said. Men simply can’t do what women do. Agreed. I don’t open doors for ladies because I think they are weak. hat condom is for your summer straw hat. when dining out, you knee works a treat for your hat and it's under the table and protected.. always just used a brush on my hats to get the worst of the dust off. (didn't have no plastic sponges back then.) good video!!!
Got an old white Bailey, 22years. It so comfortable. Sweat stains, lining is gone,sweat band is gone. It has more caricature than a lot of people I know.

Appears we have similar taste in hats. I have 2 pure beaver hats. My 1st, like yours, is a custom hat in natural beaver for the same reason and also because its just more unique. The second is a very old Stetson silver belly that I was gifted by an old country lawyer. It started life as a cattleman and I took it in to my custom hatter and had it cleaned, reconditioned, reblocked, and reshaped into a Gus. Man what a hat! Those old ones are true gems and should be rescued and worn if they can be salvaged. I asked my hatter for a tracing of the custom block when I had my had made. I used that and some old cedar to make a hat block I can put in there when it gets wet or really hot and sweaty to hold the shape and size overnight. Fortunately a lot of restaurants around here have hat hooks on the wall by the tables. I always appreciate that.
Lots of good points made. Something my uncle taught me was in mixed company (women and men together), and no place for your hat. It was permissible to set your hat on your knee when seated, and either in your hand or on your head while standing. And my aunt had no problem reminding us of that if we had forgotten.

I owned a horse and road it a lot many years ago. I'm not a cowboy really but I do love a good cowboy hat (Gus crease). You're speaking just plain ol common sense. You're 100% right and you will offend those without it. Great channel!
I take my hat off indoors, but I can see your point in restaurants. I have not worn a cowboy hat regularly for years, but I noticed that I tip my hat to ladies only when wearing a cowboy hat. Great video!

I've several "good" hats. One is a Stetson buffalo felt that I've had for about 10 years. My favorite is an old Baily. It was my dad's hat that he had for 20 years. I got it after he died (30 years ago) so - yes- if you take proper care, a hat can last quite a long time. Side note, neither of those hats are "everyday" hats, but the Stetson comes close. My everyday work hat is a Baily fur felt fedora. (The difference between a cowboy hat and a fedora -- seems to me is how wide is the brim)

Your views on hats are wonderful, but your views on feminism and women in general are superb! Many thanks! ... And as for spending money on things, I've always lived by the adage "If you're going to spend a lot of money on something, spend a little bit more and get what you really want." I've always done this and I've never been dissatisfied or had "buyer's remorse." I'd rather it hurt me a little bit at first over the cost of something of quality than hurt me many times over when buying something of poor quality. There's an expression for that, but I can't think of it now, something about a workman and his tool, maybe? :-)
At 70, this is the only channel I’ve subscribed to. Great work, I agree with almost everything I’ve seen in your videos. I have a hard time throwing away old cowboy hats. I just counted 8 sitting around, all 4X Beaver Stetsons, and I know one of my favorites was several years old when I was on a pack trip in Canada on 9-11. They were mostly bought used but barely worn from classifieds or eBay from folks who bought them for a party, wore them once or twice to line dance in, then auctioned. The straw hats were easy to throw out when they wear out since I don't really like them to begin with, but the felt hats just seem to hang around.
Regarding quality saddles, I rode a cheap saddle I bummed from a friend. The right stirrup leather broke and the stirrup fell into the sand of the arena. Nothing bad happened and I could control the horse but losing a stirrup like that could be bad if you ask me. Now I buy heavy buffalo leather stirrup straps.

Stumbled across your channel, and glad I did. I'm born and raised in the NW, but have always felt like I was supposed to live in Texas, and it's for all the things you talk about. In my 20's my job had Texas as part of my territory, and the Texans I had the privilege of working with were some of the nicest people you'd ever want to know. I hope I get to live there someday, I think you do it right!
I had me a cowboy hat once, 10x stetson, black. I got it when I was a teenager. Well my big old head kept growing, to the point I ended up splitting the leather band on the inside. I would always keep it in pretty good shape but it was definitely showing its age. Well I “adopted” a 4 year old cow dog, she ended up being a real, real good dog. But one day I put on that cowboy hat and that sweet cow dog commences to growling and snarling at me like you wouldn’t believe. I snatched it off quick. She went back to being her sweet usual self. That was enough evidence that her former “owner”/abuser wore a cowboy hat. Well that old hat got lost to the years. That old cow dog is gone, she was a great dog to the end. I wonder if I’ll ever have another cowboy hat. I hope so. My new cowdog wont mind. She’s been here since she was just a little bitty pup.

I was always taught, and still do today, to take my hat off when I meet someone for the first time or when I greet a woman or someone I hold in high regard and shake hands. I usually leave it on when I greet my buddies.

Born and raised in Southwest Kansas. Been wearing felt hats for 60+ years. Decided to haul the cows instead of chasing them. Hated it when they came out with the high-backed seats in the trucks. My grandpa always wore the Rancher style hats so I tried that but it just wasn't me. Ended up wearing a low crown hat and had the rims cut down to 31/2 inches. Worked great when driving.
I took a liking to the Australian leather hats. I do change the round top to a pinch front. Its heavy but stays in place well. But it doesn't get grabbed as much by brush and thorns.

Loved this. I ride english and own one western hat I wear while riding trails, mainly to keep rain from blinding me. It's not much of a hat and ill cared for so didn't think I'd utilize your wisdom. But...like all your videos this enveloped the topic as well as your philosophies on life. Years ago my shoeing instructor said "treat a lady like a lady and she'll be a lady." Same could be said for fellas being gentlemen. Being in a male dominated line of work I enjoy the respect we give each other as professionals. If you can be anything, be kind. Goes both ways. I'll always appreciate a door being held for me and the tip of a hat. Your ability to articulate is a treasure too.
What you said about women is very kind and not common nowadays. I grew up during a time when women were both no longer treated with chivalry in my area of the world, and also viewed as lesser and weaker. I think it’s a telling measure of the culture and the men in that culture on how they treat children, animals, and women.

Duane, I have only recently started watching your channel. I really love the content and your manner of presentation. I am an Alabama man who doesn't ride, but I have worn cowboy hats nearly all of my life. My dad always wore a hat and the habit moved to me when I was young. I didn't want a fedora, so I went the cowboy way. In my view, a man needs a hat, especially in sun or rain. I have quite a number of them and enjoy the pride of ownership and the individuality they offer. Again, thank you for your efforts and sharing.
I would appreciate a thank you from the lady but not expected. This younger generation, well that is another discussion. Thank you for the lesson on hats and etiquette. As a Harley rider, two things. 1-respect 2-don’t be a poser That is where I am pushing myself so hard to not cross/disrespect that line of a real cowboy. My wife is from South Dakota and I lived in the southern mid-west while in the military. Our heart has gone back to the western wear routes.
You are right on the mark that a hat becomes the man and each hat is unique to the owner. I had a hat that had been given to me by my brother before he passed and it took me few years but I made the had my own. Well needless to say someone stole it right off my head and I did not get it back. great video.
I agree about black hat bleeding except for 100% beaver Baileys. I don't know how long ago this applies but I have one I got 255 years back and have worn as my bad job and bad weather hat almost from new. It's felt is a little different and a hatter told me it was Portuguese sourced felt. I have Woolite washed that hat 3 times when it got sweated on so much that it would stink and it never got lighter like all my other blacks of all beaver percentages. My 100x Resistol and Stetson (100x but not 100% beaver) blacks have bled from rain so that they have faded a little from black and they have been washed. Totally agree on money spent on hat paying you back if you wear it 9 or 10 months out of the year.
Much as I've been through, and kinda have had it with women. I still show respect. Because I know not all women are like the ones I've been around. Besides, ditto on your explanation of "women are special".

Manners have somewhat gone out of fashion, but I still practice traditional etiquette whenever possible. I may not be able to change other people's habits, but I can still set an example.
I was raised with four younger sisters. It was instilled in me from an early age that as the big brother I was to “look after the girls”. And I did so unconsciously. My sisters never had any “trouble” from any of my male friends nor theirs. Men are and should be the protectors of women. Some deserve it and accept it and some resent it. You know who you are. Showing respect and showing courtesy doesn’t cost extra. It’s part of the “social lubricant” that helps us get along in society. Love the vids.

Very good advice. Most all I have known from an early age from my Uncle Norman. He was a real live working cowboy out in Montana. One situation you didn't mention is removing your hat when theres a funeral procession passing by. Being a gentleman towards the ladies is just the right thing to do. Thank you for doing this.

Was once in a funeral procession for a family member. As we went by a local high school baseball practice, those boys took their hats off and held them over their hearts. One of the most moving things I’ve ever seen.
Not disagreeing with you, but I am still "old" school. The first 2 items of clothing I was given (after a real cloth diaper) was a pair of cowboy boots and a cowboy hat. Grew up on a ranch/farm. So, I never wear a hat inside. If there is a roof over my head the hat comes off. Especially in a house ( mine or anyone else) church, a courthouse or a restaurant. If I don't have a good place to sit the hat at the restaurant to protect it, I hold it in my hand any time the waitress walks by and I sit it in the chair next to me or hang it on the back of the chair if possible. I try to tip my hat at any lady as I walk by and you're right most really do appreciate it. Those that don't aren't worth discussing. Old school common courtesy is still out there its just harder to find sometimes.
I'm in the hat off inside camp. Heck, often even a ball cap. But society as a whole seems to not be about hat removal.
I have to agree with you. I didn't see anything in this video that would make want to unsubscribe but the one place I would disagree with Dewayne is the hat at the dinner table. I never say anything out loud about it but I really dislike all those that wear there ball cap, or any kind of hat, to the table, even or especially in a restaurant. A public place is where you should show your best manners, even if you are concerned about where you'll put your hat because of how much it cost. Being a little embarrassed by your hat hair is a small price to pay for good manners.

We were taught cover (Marine term for "hat") etiquette in the Marine Corps. starting in boot camp. You don't wear your uniform cover indoors, ever, and if it is a non-uniform cover you take it off when the national anthem plays and place your hand over your heart. In uniform you salute cover on when it plays outdoors, cover off salute when indoors. They gave us a ton of rules for both uniform and non-uniform covers.
My second tour I had a company Gunny who was a big stickler for proper etiquette in and out of uniform, even on libbo if he caught you walking with your hands in your pockets or some other cardinal sin like walking and eating etc. you could pretty much count on spending several hours trimming the grass outside the CP with a little tiny scissors or some other useless task like filling a sandbag and then run carrying it around the CP multiple times and then dumping it out back where you started and refilling it and repeating said exercise until he got tired of watching you do it. My first tour I had a sergeant who would make you run stairs in a high rise building wearing your gas mask for etiquette violations and or because he was bored. To this day I still don't walk with my hands in my pockets.
I don’t know about the Marine Corps first hand, but in the army you keep your headgear on indoors ONLY if you’re armed. Otherwise yeah, it’s a hard rule.

Everything you said was Gospel, been wearing a Hat (cowboy hat) since I was sixteen and been doing everything you said since then (tipping hat, opening doors etc) still hold my wife’s(of thirty+ years) hand everywhere. Whether someone is holding the door for me, or I hold the door for them, I always try to smile and say, "thank you" or "your welcome (no problem, sure thing--whatever phrase you use)" It's simply about being polite to each other. I agree with everything you’ve said. I grew up back east (65 now) and been living out west for 45 years. One thing I do know …if I didn’t hold a door for a woman my Mother would slap me from the grave. We were all taught respect for our elders ,women ,police and those who served in the service ( for us it was the WW2 and Korean vets) Seems these days younger folks all want respect and let you know about it at the drop of a hat. And the majority of them haven’t earned a place at the back of the latrine line. A bit harsh I know .i do miss the days when respect given to those who earned it through hard work and a life well lived
My Grandmother has been dead for almost 30 years, I am still afraid of her "correction" lol.
Love the comments about women. My love is very much a modern woman, but I can always see in her face the happiness when I open the car door or a door to a building. She understands my old fashioned ways and very much appreciates it.
If I may be frank, when I first discovered your channel I exclusively started going after the “cigar talk” type videos where you give advice and such and skipped over the horse, leather, and hat videos, etc. I am so glad I went back and started watching each video from oldest to this one because your videos teach so much more along with the thing itself you’re taking about. Dear Sir, one observation when brushing with either the hat sponge or a natural fiber brush you need to mind the direction. Most hats you want to go counter clockwise around the crown and brim, front to back on top and clockwise on the underside of the brim. Reason for this is when the hat body is made the fur swirls around a conical form in one direction. You can tell if you stroke your hat it’ll feel slightly but noticeably rougher in one direction than the other. find the smooth way and keep your cleaning motion in that smooth direction, with the grain so to speak. During manufacturing hats are “pounced”, sanded, yes with sand paper to cut any fuzzy hairs and even out the felt. Periodically, a clean hat can be spruced up even removing light stains by pouncing. The best handiest thing I’ve found is the smother side of an Emory board, right, those cheap disposable nail files. Don’t ask me how a come to try that, well I play guitar and banjo so I usually have one around and one day I looked at my hat that I made myself by the way, looked at my nail file and just went at it. With the grain lightly working my way around the hat and dog gone it, it did a more than reasonable job.

Someone mentioned in an earlier post about their being "Old School". Well, the same thing goes for me. I was taught at an early age to respect the Ladies. The real Ladies. No Sir, I'm not and, I don't pretend to be anything but just me. I started wearing Cowboy clothes and accoutrements when I was so young I can't remember when and, I'm now 76 years old. That's quite a spell.

I will be watching more of your videos but this will be my favorite. I am just an old farmer from back in the day. Had a few horses when I was young but a very good friend of mine, Bud Remmers, had a western store and he is the one who got me into cowboy hats and boots. I have worn them ever since. God bless.

Another great video, Duane. Thank you for the great advice! All of it was good. I didn't know about the sponge. Having one for each color makes sense. It's just like a shoe or boot brush. I always thought of having a black hat, but I didn’t know that black hats bleed. Yes. Please set all cowboy and dress hats down on the crown or hang them in a manner that you don't damage the hat. I'm old school I take my hat off indoors, no matter where I am. Also, I remove my hat when someone is praying and when the National Anthem is playing. Also, I remove my hat when I eat, always - indoors or outdoors. If it's raining, I try to duck under something if possible. Absolutely. Tip you hat to a lady. Finally, Duane, you can chase a rabbit anytime. Your point about ladies was well said. Men simply can’t do what women do. Agreed. I don’t open doors for ladies because I think they are weak. Appears we have similar taste in hats. I have 2 pure beaver hats. My 1st, like yours, is a custom hat in natural beaver for the same reason and also because its just more unique. The second is a very old Stetson silver belly that I was gifted by an old country lawyer. It started life as a cattleman and I took it in to my custom hatter and had it cleaned, reconditioned, reblocked, and reshaped into a Gus. Man what a hat! Those old ones are true gems and should be rescued and worn if they can be salvaged. I asked my hatter for a tracing of the custom block when I had my had made. I used that and some old cedar to make a hat block I can put in there when it gets wet or really hot and sweaty to hold the shape and size overnight. Fortunately a lot of restaurants around here have hat hooks on the wall by the tables. I always appreciate that.

Something my uncle taught me was in mixed company (women and men together), and no place for your hat. It was permissible to set your hat on your knee when seated, and either in your hand or on your head while standing. And my aunt had no problem reminding us of that if we had forgotten.

I take my hat off indoors, but I can see your point in restaurants. I have not worn a cowboy hat regularly for years, but I noticed that I tip my hat to ladies only when wearing a cowboy hat. Great video!

I've several "good" hats. One is a Stetson buffalo felt that I've had for about 10 years.
My favorite is an old Baily. It was my dad's hat that he had for 20 years. I got it after he died (30 years ago) so - yes- if you take proper care, a hat can last quite a long time.
Side note, neither of those hats are "everyday" hats, but the Stetson comes close.
My everyday work hat is a Baily fur felt fedora. (The difference between a cowboy hat and a fedora -- seems to me is how wide is the brim)

And as for spending money on things, I've always lived by the adage "If you're going to spend a lot of money on something, spend a little bit more and get what you really want." I've always done this and I've never been dissatisfied or had "buyer's remorse." I'd rather it hurt me a little bit at first over the cost of something of quality than hurt me many times over when buying something of poor quality. There's an expression for that, but I can't think of it now, something about a workman and his tool, maybe? :-)
At 70, this is the only channel I’ve subscribed to. Great work, I agree with almost everything I’ve seen in your videos.
I have a hard time throwing away old cowboy hats. I just counted 8 sitting around, all 4X Beaver Stetsons, and I know one of my favorites was several years old when I was on a pack trip in Canada on 9-11. They were mostly bought used but barely worn from classifieds or eBay from folks who bought them for a party, wore them once or twice to line dance in, then auctioned. The straw hats were easy to throw out when they wear out since I don't really like them to begin with, but the felt hats just seem to hang around.

Regarding quality saddles, I rode a cheap saddle I bummed from a friend. The right stirrup leather broke and the stirrup fell into the sand of the arena. Nothing bad happened and I could control the horse but losing a stirrup like that could be bad if you ask me. Now I buy heavy buffalo leather stirrup straps.
I’m a young 4th generation farmer in northeastern Nebraska (cow/calf, hogs, corn, soybeans). I have family who ranch in the western part of Nebraska in the Sandhills. One of the things I find fascinating are the difference in the culture of farming communities and ranching communities. A lot times folks from the city aren’t aware of the distinctions. What are your thoughts on the differences between farming culture and ranching culture?

Stumbled across your channel, and glad I did. I'm born and raised in the NW, but have always felt like I was supposed to live in Texas, and it's for all the things you talk about. In my 20's my job had Texas as part of my territory, and the Texans I had the privilege of working with were some of the nicest people you'd ever want to know. I hope I get to live there someday, I think you do it right!
I had me a cowboy hat once, 10x stetson, black. I got it when I was a teenager. Well my big old head kept growing, to the point I ended up splitting the leather band on the inside. I would always keep it in pretty good shape but it was definitely showing its age. Well I “adopted” a 4 year old cow dog, she ended up being a real, real good dog. But one day I put on that cowboy hat and that sweet cow dog commences to growling and snarling at me like you wouldn’t believe. I snatched it off quick. She went back to being her sweet usual self. That was enough evidence that her former “owner”/abuser wore a cowboy hat. Well that old hat got lost to the years. That old cow dog is gone, she was a great dog to the end. I wonder if I’ll ever have another cowboy hat. I hope so. My new cowdog wont mind. She’s been here since she was just a little bitty pup.

I just got into Cowboy fast draw and it looks like everybody thats into it wears a hat ,a cowboy hat , so now I'm shopping for a hat , so glad I found this guy, telling me things I need to know . I subscribed ,I really like this dude ,he seems to be a really great guy.
Custom made hats yeah got a couple three of those. They still hanging in there.... over 20 years old. One is retired and hangs on the hat rack.

I was always taught, and still do today, to take my hat off when I meet someone for the first time or when I greet a woman or someone I hold in high regard and shake hands. I usually leave it on when I greet my buddies.
Really good wisdom shared here. And yes, us practical ladies still very much enjoy a genuine gentleman (personal opinion). I would love to see a video about how a lady of the western lifestyle can fit in. And some etiquette of a lady in this life style as Well. Great video as usual.

Born and raised in Southwest Kansas. Been wearing felt hats for 60+ years. Decided to haul the cows instead of chasing them. Hated it when they came out with the high-backed seats in the trucks. My grandpa always wore the Rancher style hats so I tried that but it just wasn't me. Ended up wearing a low crown hat and had the rims cut down to 31/2 inches. Worked great when driving.

I do change the round top to a pinch front.
Its heavy but stays in place well. But it doesn't get grabbed as much by brush and thorns.

Loved this. I ride english and own one western hat I wear while riding trails, mainly to keep rain from blinding me. It's not much of a hat and ill cared for so didn't think I'd utilize your wisdom. But...like all your videos this enveloped the topic as well as your philosophies on life. Years ago my shoeing instructor said "treat a lady like a lady and she'll be a lady." Same could be said for fellas being gentlemen. Being in a male dominated line of work I enjoy the respect we give each other as professionals. If you can be anything, be kind. Goes both ways. I'll always appreciate a door being held for me and the tip of a hat. Your ability to articulate is a treasure too.

What you said about women is very kind and not common nowadays. I grew up during a time when women were both no longer treated with chivalry in my area of the world, and also viewed as lesser and weaker. I think it’s a telling measure of the culture and the men in that culture on how they treat children, animals, and women.

Duane, I have only recently started watching your channel. I really love the content and your manner of presentation. I am an Alabama man who doesn't ride, but I have worn cowboy hats nearly all of my life. My dad always wore a hat and the habit moved to me when I was young. I didn't want a fedora, so I went the cowboy way. In my view, a man needs a hat, especially in sun or rain. I have quite a number of them and enjoy the pride of ownership and the individuality they offer. Again, thank you for your efforts and sharing.

That is where I am pushing myself so hard to not cross/disrespect that line of a real cowboy. My wife is from South Dakota and I lived in the southern mid-west while in the military. Our heart has gone back to the western wear routes.

You are right on the mark that a hat becomes the man and each hat is unique to the owner. I had a hat that had been given to me by my brother before he passed and it took me few years but I made the had my own. Well needless to say someone stole it right off my head and I did not get it back. great video.
I agree about black hat bleeding except for 100% beaver Baileys. I don't know how long ago this applies but I have one I got 255 years back and have worn as my bad job and bad weather hat almost from new. It's felt is a little different and a hatter told me it was Portuguese sourced felt. I have Woolite washed that hat 3 times when it got sweated on so much that it would stink and it never got lighter like all my other blacks of all beaver percentages. My 100x Resistol and Stetson (100x but not 100% beaver) blacks have bled from rain so that they have faded a little from black and they have been washed. Totally agree on money spent on hat paying you back if you wear it 9 or 10 months out of the year.
