My first time thinking about a 4 in 1 esc. Explanation is nice and clear. THX for the help.
FREAKIN' AWESOME TO THE MAX!!!!!!! YOU HAVE NO IDEA HOW LONG I HAVE SEARCHED FOR THIS TO BE POSITIVE! lol It's exactly as I thought but there is NO information on wiring these or in my case the Cicada 10A to the new micro Lux F4!! I was pulling my hair out for I thought this is how it should be, BUT I went to Flex RC site where they are about the ONLY ones who show it and they only show it connecting to the PKO/BLX and it is different and they DO NOT tell what wires are what on it as to whether to change the ESC plug to where it is correct or do as you said and just wire the motors to the corresponding to where they go as long as the ESC wires are the same!!! Thank the Lord in Heaven for you!! Like I said I was thinking well it HAS to wire as in BF and the ESC is wrong according, for 3 and 4 are opposite where they should be and I was NOT going to wire up my little tiny tiny lol not knowing FOR SURE!! For I didn't want any garbage don't cha know!! So it is that simple why the hell does everyone keep stupid stuff like that a BIG secret how DUMB!! I even searched my ass off on RCgroups and NOTHING on this they talk all about "how they did it" but not telling or showing HOW THEY DID IT!! MAN!! How frustrating this day has been and thanks to you bud, I'M NOT STRESSING ANYMORE I'LL HAVE THIS BABY IN THE AIR IN ABOUT 30 minutes now!! AWESOME!! Your the man and Turbo told ya that and by God his word goes a long long way with the floks that know him(me) haha!! Again thanks so much and I am putting out a video as well now telling everyone how damn dumb they are and who told me EXACTLY WHAT I WANTED TO KNOW!! oh what a relief!! I am not joking I have searched for five hours now yes five and NOTHING not one thing and the ONE place I finally found where it said for a manual click here and there was no link just the title shortcut and it did not work it came up 404 cannot find page!!!! OH WOW!! You don't know how I feel right now I would kiss you and I'm not even CLOSE to "that way" hahahahaahhaa!!! But you my fine fellow have saved my ass and the day for me sir!!! Cheers and may the Lord take a HUGE liking to you!!! I have NEVER found a more hard to find subject in my life on the damn internet and it isn't like it is UNCOMMON!! MANY are trying the micro Lux F4 and the cicada 10A 4 in 1 why CAN'T anyone but you tell it like it is its very simple and I thought so but as I said I wasn't going to botch it all up and just do what I thought for I've got myself in loads of crap doing that lol!! Sorry for the short novel for a comment but you again have NO IDEA what I have been going through this day just trying to do it right the first darn time!! Again thank you and I shall recommend you to EVERYONE for he's the guy that simply gives you the damn answer to your question not says '" Oh you just wire it accordingly well WHAT THE HELL IS ACCORDINGLY when the motor pads are in the WRONG place!!!! lol but I thought I was right and you confirmed this for me and I will ALWAYS be in your debt now!! Ask and if I can make I happen bub it WILL your great! Awesome job keep up the awesome good work, now I shall get this little Atmospheric bitch the stretched x 2.5" Aeolus wired and flyin' in just a bit!! AWESOME!! THX once more!! L8r- Turbo.
I am super happy the video will get you on your way to flying your crafts.
You can also repin the short cable with a scalpel or something similar
Another easy option is a custom motor mix in BF, then you can solder the motors to whatever pad you'd like. I've occasionally done that on tight builds to make it a little cleaner/fit. When just switching motors you can just start with the Quad X mix and copy/paste the positions where you need.
I think the resource remapping is faster if on BF3.1
Looking at my Lizard and a120 build I just finished, we are going to see a lot of them! Thank you and cheers...
wow that was so helpful. I ended up working everything up wrong and switching motors around in beta flight but this makes so much more sense
Great. If running betaflight 3.1 we can use "resource" to move the motors around too.
awesome video, i had to stop building yesterday bevcause I had no idea how to solder it, now I'm good to go, many thanks
Great.
Now you can just repin the harness the same way you describe in your second method for wiring escs?
No repining needed.
This stays the same as described in the video even if you are going to change orientation on the board correct? Or do you go from the ESC signal number to the motor number based on the direction you are going to change the orientation of the board?
The principal is the same, if you flip the board the motor to ESC numbering will be different.
thanks for another very educational video, keep them coming
Great, I hope it helps.
Great video. I have one question regarding the solder pads for each motor. The motor that I have has a positive, negative, and signal wire. The solder pads do not specify which is positive, negative, or signal. Is it alright to just solder them up in any order on the pads?
Which motor is this? I suspect its a motor for a specific model which has plugs or color coordination of the esc.
Excellent explanation- thanks !
Iam planing to make a 3 inch quad with naza m lite and in the 4 in 1 we got 4 esc singal wires and one ground wire only so does it work with dji naza
I don't know much about dji naza, I really can't say.
thank you! i just ordered a couple of them so i can start learning. this instructional. just. in. time.
great.
Nick What kind of FC are you holding.... and can this connect GPS ublox to this FC?
Sorry, I can't say, this was so long ago I don't recall.
Do you still have to cross the motor wires to the esc to get a counter clockwise rotation for motors 1 and 4 or just solder them straight? Thanks
I tend to reverse motor direction in the blheli app.
Good video. To improve bit more; you should of added signal wiring going to f/c and show how it would look.
Great video nick. I believe I have the same 10amp esc in your video. Cicada 2-3s Lipo blheli s. Is it possible to use the blheli configurator to change the motor numbers and direction with this esc?
yes, the blheli app and suite will be able to change motor direction on this esc just fine.
have you ever had one channel go out? was there any way to recover it? (I know I can run a single external esc to keep going, but curious if there is a cure)
also happened on a fairly new quad after it rained and it got some moisture... do you think the fresh water killed that channel? thanks!
I have not had one esc go out on a 4 in 1. I suspect if we can location the damaged component and a replacement, sure it could be fixed. But that feels like a big effort.
I was going to try to reflash it before taking it apart.. once it is out I will look for signs of damage to hardware.. thanks!
I just wondered if the moisture may have somehow put the ESC in bootmode of some sort and hoping the hardware was not affected.. but again just hoping and wondering if it is something others have seen!!! thanks!!
Does it show all 4 esc when connected to the bl_heli app? It it does, that seems to indicate an issue other than the ESC. Maybe the signal pad on the FC is out. Maybe.
it was one of the SMD chips on the 4in1... I could see the signs it was burned out once I opened it all up for inspection. thanks for all the assistance!!
So I've got a question, I have a project which I have to use 2 brushless motors, I was wondering if I can use one of these 4in1 esc's and connect the motors to it instead of buying 2 separate esc's. Is is possible? Would appreciate if someone help me. Thanks :)
Yes, we can use one or more esc. The controlling factor is how do you control the esc. flight controller? Other method?
Greate explaniation, thks a lot.
Saludos from México.
Thank you
another great video to help people out.
Thanks Bull
great video . I'm looking to use 4 in 1 esc's on my next build
Thank you
Nck, Thanks! what do you use to power the FC?
If your powering a fc which is an all in one ite self (accepts battery led wires) we can take the positive and negative from the esc and solder those to the + and - of the fc where the battery led wires would normally go. Some of these 4 in 1s have a 5v bec, in that case we can solder to any + and - pad, but I would still recommend soldering to the + and - of for the battery led wires.
Do you need an PCB with 5v outlet? With the power- do you power the ESC, or the power board? How do you power the other? What about the wiring harness? Still can not use the 30A 4 in 1 ESC!?!
no if the flight controller can take battery voltage. Look for vcc on the flight controller or pin map.
Nick imwired my omnibus f4 Nano v2 to a 4in 1 esc,I think maybe I wired the vbat and current wire wrong as now I have no led lights on fc?whatncould I have fried ?i believe the board accepts or is supposed to accept full volts to board,?what can I check as far as maybe fixing the board..I have several other bad boards I may could replace a part with..voltage regulator?maybe? Thanks
So do you not need a PDB for a 4in1 setup?
Not if your flight controller is an all in one. If your flight controller is not a 4 in 1 you might need a 5v regulator between the esc and fc. Some of the 4 in 1 esc come with a 5v regulator built in.
Sorry im new to the hobby and im about to get the parts for my first quad. What exactly do you mean by a 4 in 1 Flight Controller?
No worries. Often when we say 4 in 1 we are referring to the ESCs, like in this video which is for micros or around 100mm quads. When we refer to all in one flight controller we are referring to a flight controller and pdb combination which are becoming very common, but not all flight controllers have the pdb function.
Nick Burns ohhh. Ok thanks for the help. Keep up the great videos👍👍
with the lead method, you can just remove the wires from the FC end and move the signal wires to the correct position.
Do mean to de-pin the connector and lay it out with the proper signal to motor layout?
Just re-arrange the FC side of the JST plug. It's easy to lift the little white tab and pull all the connectors out of the JST plug and put them back into the JST connector in the order needed.
So do you need a PDB with this and an FC? No, right?
Correct, no pdb
if you need these nick I'll have them on my site tomorrow..
Good to know. thnx
Hi which FC would you reccomend for the Spedix 4in1 ?
Any FC with the same hole dimensions should work. It really depends on what your wanting. F3, F4, OSD etc. Look for your chosen features.
If I would have wired my 4 in 1 ESC like this, I would have immediately destroyed it!!!!
Plus and GND wires on my 4 in 1 have to be soldered just vice versa !!!
I recommend to test where the GND pad for the battery on the ESC is first with a multitmeter and do that against the GND pin of the signal wire connector!
This comment is about the HAKRC F4 mini ,I need help , how to flash this board with INAV , I also need to take advantage of 4 uarts because I need to use
- gps module
- flysky rx in sbus mode
- speedybee uart Bluetooth adapter
- AKK x2m 25-800mw vtx with smart audio
And if I can find some other type of cool gadget that requires another uart I would happily try to fit it in the build because I’m under the impression that this HAKRC f4 mini flight controller has the capability to connect up to 5 uarts , am I wrong ? ?, are there only 3 uarts available ? Do I need to re-map my led/buzzer plug because I DONT want to do that I want to have my LEDs for night flights and I already have them installed
, please someone help is needed thanks 🙏
If you have a flight controller that accepts the same connector, couldn't you also disconnect the wires from the connector and reinstall them in the "new" correct locations? Or if it's too difficult to reinstall, just cut them all and solder 4's wire to the 1 wire going to the connector(and so on)? I'm just asking, because I'm getting ready to build a mini owl using these same components and I'd much rather use the solder pads that are closest to the motors.
Should work. You do have to be very careful when lifting the tab - it's very very fragile. But definitely doable. If you're running betaflight 3.1+ .... you can just remap the motors: fishpepper.de/2017/02/22/betaflight-custom-motor-ordering-made-easy2-3-1-x/
Which board are you using? The only one I've found that used the connector was the Lumineer Micro Lux F4. which I used on my hell-whoop.
John Duquette Omnibus F4 flight controller with the Little Bee 20x4 esc board.
Omnibus F3 AIO has 4 n1 connector as well
Sorry I should have been more clear - the Micro lux is the only 20 x 20 flight controller I found with the connector. The Omnibus is 30.5 x 30.5 and doesn't match the micro escs.
Why didn't you simply turn the controler around? So that 1 lines with 1 etc.
My recollection (this was some time ago), is reversing the power leads create a bottle neck for getting the battery strap (bottom mounted) through, also the two connectors for the signal wires create a bit of a wiring mess as well. The purpose of the video was primarily about reassigning motors in the proper orientation when needed.
OK, it did clear up what I was looking for. That is what the colour code was for each esc input. Thanks. Just wondered about the other.
What FC is that?
I think its a 20x20 F3 with OSD from banggood.
Good video Nick 👍
thank you
You could really confuse there hell out of people and and tell the to wire up normal and change motors by remapping in CLI. Lmao. Just joking. Great video. Very straight forward and dummy proofed.
you had me there for a moment. Good one. Thank you.
Isn't this bad enough to be called out as a design defect?
I mean I know motor layouts have changed a bit, I think my CC3D boards used a different layout from a Naze boards. But since Cleanflight and Betaflight hasn't it more or less standardized? I'm not sure we should be accepting this shouldn't we the consumer be pushing back and saying this is wrong. If there's a reason for this layout if someone can post.
In the mean time if someone could make custom JST to JST to convert they might sell a few cables, and yes I know technically you can change them yourself. But S that I've destroyed more than I've adjusted.
Thanks
It would be nice if they labelled the ESC pads and wires with letters to avoid implying that they belong to a specific motor.
that was very good, but the computers is where I run and hide
you can connect everything as clean as you like, shortest way. And remap everything. Check out Joshua Bardwell's video.
m.ruclips.net/video/z5aO-3_n-Hs/видео.html
Yes, that method will work as well.
Cool!
Jorrit Lute Wolters that's what I'd also suggest, wire up cleanest way, than remap :).
but his explanation is also very good and clear. Thank you Nick for the great Videos :)
you can also switch the order of the signal pins going into the fc ^^ with a small needle its np to take the cable out of the connector and manually "remap" them ;) or just solder them to the "right" pads if your fc has solder pads for signal ;)
Greate !!!
LMFAO!!!! Who's not understanding this???
Dude, for damn REALLLLLLLLLLLL I was like "lock" front of this problem and you just help me ASAP ! Thank you very helfull and great commentary ! Peace :)
Yea I always just re pin the ribbon cable in the necessary order. I also remove the V and G wires and just power the fc from battery voltage directly from the B+ and B- pads on the esc with jumper wires cause more often then not you’re forced to switch all the pins around on the jst header cause the fc jst connector is always pinned reverse of the jst female connector on the esc and I always tend to have more 4 pin jst headers laying around and never any 6 and 8 ones so I just make my own ribbon cables since you don’t need to have the same pin count connector just as long as it’s jst sh 1.0
Iam using 30 amp esc for 2212 motors so which 4in1 esc I have to pick?
I have a special ops project that requires simultaneously controlling three drone motors according to three conditions using my joysticks a using a 10 channel Flysky FS-i6S.
Condition A
Three motors receive the same speed command with motor -1 rotating opposite to motors 2 and 3.
Condition B
Three motors receive the same speed command with motor -2 rotating opposite to motors 1 and 3.
Condition C
Three motors receive the same speed command with motor -3 rotating opposite to motors 1 and 2.
In other words, each direction I move the joystick will actuate three motors with my two joysticks. I figure ill need three, 4 in 1 ESC's . Each ESC wired for three motors with polarity flipped on the third motor. Can I do this?
Thanks, Chris
Your in far deeper than I have experience for. I afraid I am not much help. From your description seems like a function of the flight controller to the esc rather than the esc. Just a guess though.
Thanks
Hi I just want to validate something. If I have a Racestar 4in1 6A ESC with 5V BEC, can I solder the black and red wires from the ESC to my Piko BLX battery spot? Thanks a lot!
Yes, you can. With one possible issue. I have seen where the FC wired this way might not have the power to power the camera, vtx and RX at the same time. If you find this to be true in your case, take two short wires and solder them on to the battery led pads or wires on the ESC to the FC battery pads.
Hi nick this might seem off topic but what is that blue table with grids drawn on it ? What is it called ? I have seen many youtubers have that type of table with grids and angle drawn. I also want one what is it called please ?
Mine is a craft mat. Not sure if the brand, bought it on Amazon
ty helped alot
👍👍
Can i connect it to pixhawk? if yes how should i do that?
Sorry, I do not have pixhawk experience.
What about the big + and - can you solder to the +and - on the aio fc next question is the small + and - on the wiring harness with the jst where does that go?
The big + and - are to the battery. The small + and - go to vbat and ground on the flight controller. sometimes the flight controller can handle battery voltage via the connector, but often that is only when we buy a flight controller and esc as a pair.
Nick Burns on the clracing f4 board I don't see a vbat pad will the esc +and - act as a vbat pad?
lol check for the racerstar STAR F4.... it has the flight controller (f4 esc's current sensor and osd in one... for 60 dollars.
I did see that. I wonder what that will fit in, looks chunky.
omg I feel dumb never noticed the numbers on the output wire. how would you power the f2f? using the bec from the esc or splitting the battery wire?
I think it depends on the 4 in 1. On one build I used the +- off the esc didn't supply enough power for the camera and rx, in that case I used a pigtail off the battery pads to the flight controller, and the FC was an all in one and could take battery voltage. In other case using the +- off the esc did just fine. I wish I could remember which worked and which didn't but I pulled the labels off.
Thanks, I'll post when I'm done, i'm using the same 6 AMp and pico BLX.
After your comment I think I can use one of the ESC Pads on the flight controller to power the board.
Battery -> PICO BLX -> ESC5 (Bottom pads) -> 6AMP 4in1
This should provide enough power for the FC to power the OSD and camera while still powering the 4 in 1. My only concern is if the ESC Output pads are limited power wise and not designed to power a 4 in 1, Considering this can power 20AMPs i don't think that should be an issue :)
They aren't limited, its straight from the battery if connected to either the battery pads or even piggy backed off the battery led wires.
i hawe a 4in1 esc and when i plug the bat in the motors dont beep or any sign of power.any sugestion how to fix that?
sounds like either a dead battery or dead esc.
When wiring your swirlie with the racerstar 6A all in 1 where did you wire the Red and Black wires in the esc signal wire connector ?
I use a short wire to go from the battery led pads to the batter pads on the femto. Signal wires go to the signal pads on the femto as described.
where do the power wires go to the pdb? i am totally confused on that part. i got no documentation with my cicada so i dont know where to put those two wire what the voltage is and i am a noob
They can go to the battery pads on the flight controller if using an all in one flight controller. If you have difficulties with the receiver, then add two wires from the battery pads on the 4 in 1 esc to the AIO flight controller battery pads. Some 4 in 1 ESCs have 5v out from the wiring harness and doesn't supply enough power for both the camera/vtx and Rx.
Not an all in one flight controller shouldn't those wires go somewhere on the PDB?my PDB has spaces to solder the power for all four escs, and thank you
Yes to the PDB if the flight controller can't handle battery voltage.
I really like the explanation, but it's the configuration and the stacking that are another issue/ challenge. What about on those diamond builds where it's in a diamond shape?! I just got a Lumenier MICRO LUX V2 - F4 Flight Controller + OSD and I'm getting ready to place that with a Lumenier Mini BLHeli_S 12A 4-in-1 OPTO ESC DSHOT. But I'm concerned about spacing because I want to put it all in one of those rekkon upgrade kits/ frames
In the case of a "diamond" we are rotating the flight stack 45 degrees. When we do this we must tell the flight controller it is rotated 45 degrees. This is done in the Betaflight app on the configuration page. The right section, I believe it says "board and sensor alignment", we change it on the yaw axis 45 degrees.
I just wired mine to the closest tabs as you did (my fc has that special connector) and then remapped using the "Resource Remapping Command (available in v3.1)" : github.com/betaflight/betaflight/wiki/Betaflight-resource-remapping Although i really prefer just being able to solder to the correct location with the signal leads...
Yes, that is an option too.
Hey Great Vid, If you could guide me on something, I want to use a recerstar 35a AIO ESC without bec but with current sensor on my new build. But will i need a Flight controller with just a 5v bec and if it has a current sensor also from what board would i use to utilize it. Thx
Not sure I understand. The 4in1 esc would have the battery wires for input, from that we connect power to the flight controller. If your flight controller has a current sensor it likely take battery voltage input, on vbat + and -. Check the FC manufacturer.
heh wish this video had been out when you posted about the swirly (which made me order one hehe) I also got a hell whoop. The 4 in one I got had a different order then yours. if I lay it out in the same orientation you had the left top was m4, bottom left was m3, top right was m1 and bottom right was m2 so I just had to swap the signal line for m1 and m2. Any way that does mean you do need to check the 4 in one rather then assume they are all the same
Yes, we must check the esc to signal wire layout. I attempted to lay out this video in a way that different esc labeling will still be relate able.
That was perfect bud. I just purchased a 4-1 and my hobby guy explained it to me and you just put the visual to it ! Thanks
Great, visuals can help.
Great video Nick, could of done with that a month ago, I got a bit confused wiring up a racer star 30a esc on a Genius 215 build ,finally got it sorted , keep up the good work ,love watching your videos ,especially that crazy fast indoor flying
Sorry I didn't think of it sooner. As I said in the video, this video was brought on by several comments and questions on the topic. I am sure we will be doing more indoor flying soon.
You can also solder to the closest terminals, use the cable you showed and then just use betaflight to assign the motor/esc locations.
Yes that too. Hey did you know you were selected in the giveaway? You have the #1 slot. Send me an email and we can get your choice to you.
Excellent vid, very useful.
Thank you.
That was excellent- very clear, working on a build now, needed this video to clear things up.
great
couldnt you just change the pin layout on the plugib lead
yes, but that isn't fool proof, we need to make sure we get the corect wire to the correct new pin location.
Great vid Nick. Just not clear on the role of the red and black wires in the six wire ribbon. First build with this ESC. Any wisdom welcomed.
Did I just send you an email?
Yes Nick. Cheers
Thanks Nick! Haven't used an all in one esc yet but now I know where to look when I do!
I hope it comes in handy.
Excellent video, thank you!
Thank you.
I have a question. I use dys f4 on all my build but never used a 4in1. I’m about to build a floss so do I run large gauge wire from the 4in1 to the dys f4 or can I power it from the small harness wires?
I think the dys f4 only needs 5volts, so a large gauge wire is not needed. If it requires 12volts, it still might not need a larger gauge, but if there are troubles increase the gauge only slightly, it will get messy if the gauge gets big a bulky.
Nick Burns right on thanks. Also I never use caps and I have never had a problem with video. Is it needed?
I haven't see a benefit other than cleaning up video. I haven't had an actual need for caps, just something I decided to try. I do not have a quad with a video issue, I don't think caps are going to help, I think its a dodgy vtx02.
What's the flight controller?
The flight controller is the brain of the quad. It tells the esc/motors what to do, it also relays the signal from your radio receiver to the ESCs/motors.
I Guess I wasn't clear with my question, I was asking what flight controller is the one you show in this video :)
Thanks!! :)
Thanks! I needed that.
Great, hope it helps.
