Devlog 1: Making A Binding Of Issac-Like -- Sort Of
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 4 май 2024
- The start of a devlog series about a roguelike game I'm developing. The game is similar to Binding of Issac, Nuclear throne, Wizards of legends, Dungeon souls, etc. You know, that top down-y shoot-y dodge-y random-y genre of games. The plan is to make a game that will have enough randomization and content to keep players amused for hours. Or at least one hour. 😅

On the bright side, if I start from a full game...... Finishing it shouldn't take too long. 😅
Bro making a full game while sleeping, and here i am scrolling through endless video just to rotate 3D player
@@kerduslegend2644 I don't touch 3D, so that makes it easier. 😅
Enjoying the patron character arc as it progresses from "because of them, my cup is full" to "I can even afford sugar", can't wait for the next chapter of their saga
I just did it as a joke the first time, but now if I keep getting more patrons, I'll probably keep adding to it til I'm sipping on expensive brewed coffee, served by my own personal robot butler, on a silver platter, with a dash of that specific creamer I like, on a beach somewhere nice. 😅
This game looks really cool. I like how you've used the creature creator for as a base for enemies!
Thanks! Hopefully that means I can get more enemies in the game than if I had to make the art myself. I've finished ~8 now, and I think from here I'll just add "advanced" variations with a few tweaked mechanics.
Then I'll have a bunch of enemy variety and I can move on to other mechanics.
Your art, games and videos has improved tremendously good job
I couldn't get notifications for a while
Well done dude, keep em coming. Videos like this that inspire me to finish my game.
I was so stoked when I saw this in the example projects! My gf and I played for an hour back and fourth trying to beat each others high scores! Then my son came out and got higher than any of us lol. It was also super useful to study the logic. I’m still new to game dev and it explained so many things I didn’t know how to do. Was a real help to my shooter project.
I'm SUPER glad to hear that! And that story is hilarious.🤣
There's a mobile example version that just got released too if you were wondering about using dual joysticks for a mobile game. It uses the multitouch joystick extension, which is fairly easy to understand and really versatile. 👍
looking good!
I love the reasoning behind making this! I am looking forward to seeing more of it! Also that creature creator looks like fun I need to try that out! :D
It's fun, but limiting. But that's the trade off. 😅
@@HelperWesley Good trade off for making something quick though!
For myself a computer illiterate fool with no game dev knowledge this video was pretty sweet. Definitely subscribing.
Ah, yes, making almost a full game while sleeping is a common mistake and I totally believe you
Happens all the time. 😅
"hopefully I can get this game done in 3 videos"
So erm, I'm looking at this playlist.
LOL! I forgot I said that. 😅
This was back when I thought I was going to make a few games each year, and make just a handful of videos per game.
Oh how naive I was. 😅
Love your vids :) (I hadn’t checked in in a while)
6:00 this killed me
It really did. 😅
@@HelperWesley its just that ive never heard a game developer casually say penis like that, and didnt even censor it like they probably would unless its dani maybe.
Cant wait for more :)
Can't wait to make more!
You know you've made it when your making games in your sleep lol, The game looks super fun, cant wait to play it.
It might be a medical condition. Yesterday I was watching a playthrough of peglin, and the next thing I knew.....

how did you get dashing to work in top down?
Can't wait to see the 6th devlog lol
Naaaaaaahhhhhh. 😅

“Hopefully I can get this game done in 3 videos”
😅
...Gosh Dangit Welsey!
Gosh dangit. 😅
This is actually closer to enter the gungeon than isaac
It's the style of rooms, and the upgrades that were taken from Binding of Issac. But there are a bunch of influences.
I was looking at Nuclear throne, Revita, and others while making the base game. Once I have more enemies, rooms, and a boss I plan on swapping out these stat upgrades for more interesting ones. 🤔
first off. i love this guy! such great videos!
but i have a question(that hopefully someone can help with)
the way he has the rooms. how does one go about making that?
if they are randomly generated , then what is random about them? are there a couple random designs of the rooms, and then randomly generate the spikes and enemies? or are the rooms designed with the spikes and then he makes those rooms random? im trying to make a game that has the "go thru room door, and end up in another, and then again and again" kind of game. but cant seem to figure out how its done.
any help leading me in the right direction would be greatly appreciated!
(also, if there is a tutorial that i cant find, that would teach how to do this, would be amazing)
If you use GDevelop, you can open up the base game example under the name "Conviction of Gun Dude" and check it out.
Otherwise, it's 2 different objects with a bunch of prebuilt layouts, the rooms and the spikes. And when you walk in to a new room it picks one of the prebuilt combinations and places it down. My version is really basic because it actually forgets the rooms behind you as you go. Otherwise it would require remembering the rooms and what the layout was, which rooms were corner pieces and such. Which would be a lot more difficult. 😅
And then after it picks the room layout to slap down, it grabs the enemies in the same way. I've prebuilt some enemy "teams" and it picks them and places them randomly in that room when it's spawned.
@@HelperWesley oh ok awesome! thank you so much for that response! its helps a bunch!
"Because this looks a little too much like a penis" proceeds to choke on my coffee, fantastic. Great vid as always. When I saw the beehive my brain went to, oh this will consistently spew out bees until I destroy it so I need to act fast. Looking forward to the next devlog.
I was working on the beehive art, and when I finished and sat back, I was like.... "yup. That's a penis alright." 😅
And yeah I've already recorded some things for the next devlog, juicing things up and adding a few more enemies before I move on to other parts of the game. 👀
I have an idea for the bees, after you hit the bee hive the will spawn some bees then it will keep spawning bee until you destroy the bee hive then it will spawn a few more bees then die
1:24 Subway Hell remake !?!?!?!
No time soon. But maybe. 🤷♂️
i just got an instant brainstorm rn about your game.
my suggestion is,the player/s can buy weapons, and switch them while moving, and you can buy items,,one items for attack, defence, and, temporary buffs.(like ln rpg shops, where theres a section of defense items, attack, and potions/buff items),,the character have five slots, and he must chose items wisely, the character, can change the weapons, before he enter the room, and after he cleared the room.and maybe, put a mission per rooms, like example ,one room, before you can enter to the next one,you must complete ,specific mission/s(ex is you must rescue a group of people who are trap inside that room, and find them before they are going to get eaten/killed by those monsters.and put npcs like prisoners/a random shop stand with a vendor/,,and he will ask you to buy those items(you can hint it to the player, cause you can put a specific item that can counter the boss inside, and the player must think,if he can used those items or not),and when you destroy the cage/s,they will run away,or maybe put a mini story or a solid premise on it,and a boss that invisible for a short time, and a snake monster, that spits poison, will be great to add i think ,and also make the bosses a specific and unique ultimate skill and weaknesses,ex for ultimate skills are stunn,or curse,or shield,or able to manipulate you if you hit by that skill(what i mean is,when the character is hit by the skill, temporary, you cant control the character it wobbles like it panics for a short period of time),,and also, walls that pop out randomly or traps that can make the character die in an instant, and a saving point/flag,cause if he dies,he can respawn to the last checkpoint he completed ,when you enter that room,to add extra challenge, also you can upgrade the weapons, but they are also vulnerable, and can be destroyed,,but can be repaired,as they are getting/receiving the damage/s,the quality how they shoots like accuracy and quality will damage also.and you can add puzzles like a room, where after you defeated the boss, the main character noticed that he cant enter, and a clue drops on him,and he must find the secret doors, and when he find those doors,he must choose wisely,if he opened the wrong door, who is filled with random mid range not so strong monsters.that can waste his bullets that hes saving to the next room.

@@carsextendedwarranty thank you for the correction,im struggling to it,but im trying my best to correct it,i dont have any bad intent.
My man codes while sleeping💀
Some people talk in their sleep.... I make games. 😅
How would you go about saving previously generated rooms in this game?
To be entirely honest. I don't know.😅
If you're using GDevelop, there are some random dungeon generation examples in the example list. One using noise, and another generating specific rooms and such.
How did you make the camera rooms like that??
Move from room to room when you walk in to a new room?
When you walk out of a room and a new one is generated, it lerps to the center of the new room. While it's lerping the time scale is set to a lower value and the player's controls are taken away and you're moved by forces until the camera stops moving. 👍
@@HelperWesley thank you

Oh my god I'm going crazy trying to create a system to generate a dungeon like this but I'll never succeed...

*8 Months Later*
Yeah, I'm terrible at guessing how long things are going to take. 😅
@@HelperWesley it was well worth it though, since I started playing it yesterday, I’ve spent a little longer than I’d like to admit on trying to obtain all of the medals on New Grounds 😂 good job!
What did you use to create the main character?
Kenney's creature mixer. 👍

Hey man! PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE show a tutorial on how to make a dragon city like game!!!🥺🥺🥺🥺
Sorry, I definitely don't have the skill or time to make something like that. 😅
@@HelperWesley aww man! Maybe something akin to a farming simulator? Just stuff like having a shop in the game, buying buildings, waiting for buildings to be built and maybe breeding dragons... Anyways thank you for responding! Im in your discord server, and I want to make a dragon city like game with gdevelop! I hope I can figure it out lol
@@HelperWesleyI love your tutorials and devlogs by the way. Very inspirational and helpful!
oh no your inner devil made this game guys this game is crcursed😀
Muahahaha
3 videos give 1 lmao not that i doubt your estimations butttt
What do you meeeeaaaaannnnn????
I can totally do it in 3 videos. 😅
coems
3 videos + another 5 videos 😅
But! I'm cheating this time.
The game is already a finished game. I could stop right now and the game would already be "Finished." 😎
@@HelperWesley until you think of procedural generation 😄
@@Dumontparker oh no. 👀
So you are telling me that the game taht i made in 6 months on construct 2 you sleep and done in gdevelop... ok im switching engine
I made the majority of the game you saw at the beginning of the video over a weekend. But it's very similar to a game i made for a game jam last year, so I already know most of the work that needed to be done.
@@HelperWesley so to be clear not even now i know making dash or this tipe of randomising rooms i just turned randoms runs in to waves of enemies to be easier to do
@@CERISTHEDEV Well, the random rooms are a bit of a cheat. When you walk in to a new room, it generated a random room using some presets and then forgets the old room.
That way I didn't have to track what every room was. So there is no persistent dungeon, but there are examples games you can learn from in GDevelop that do create proper randomize dungeons. (I just didn't do that for this game)
@@HelperWesley well my initial take on doing a random room thing was literary
If variable enemied in rooms equal to 0 remove object chamber block
If player colide with chamber changer
Set layout to random (1 to 12)
But it does not work because construct cant load layouts by this type of numbers
YOU SAYING P#NIS GOT ME OFF GUARD
I was making the beehive and sat back and thought to myself.....
"Yup.... that sure does look like a penis." 🤣
why are you lying?!?!? this is a gdevelop basic scene
Lying? 😕
The base version of this game is from the game example I made for GDevelop, I originally made the project to show a single person a shooting mechanic and it evolved in to the game example by the time I was done with it.
I wasn't recording the work I did, which is why I said "the rest was a blur" lol.
@@HelperWesley oh ok, srry i just know its a thing inside gdevelop. sorry
@@grippel. No worries. 👍
