  • Adding enemies to the roguelike video game that I'm developing. In this devlog I show how I'm making this game, with these pixel art enemies being made with Kenney's creature mixer, and Aseprite. I create the different variety of enemies I think a game needs, before moving on to other topics for the next devlog.

      Hey! I have an idea for an enemy, could you add an enemy that slams their fists into the ground and unleashes a wave that damages the player but eventually dies out.

      @@TVR300 That's sort of what the imp does though, the only difference is that the imp jumps and slams down and then the shockwave doesn't fade away until it hits a wall. 👀

      My favourite upgrades revolve around interesting gun/weapon changes or passive items that change how you play the game entirely, for example binding of Isaac and enter the gungeon do this very well, you might pick up technology or brimstone and now your attack patterns are very different or gnawed leaf/Aries and now you run into enemies to kill them 😂 enter the gungeon does this with melee weapons and the huge range of variety in weapons from shooting water on the floor and then electrocuting it or just having a sword which shoots ranged projectiles only when full hp

      check out brotato demo on steam, that game made me wanna make something similar, but also here are my favorite upgrades: (might be a little overkill for the small rooms youre working with buut :D) 1.: Ricochet (bullets chain) 2.: Split shot (50% dmg, 2 bullets- may wanna pump it to 3 bullets, bc the targeting might get a little funky if you directly hit but your bullets go to the side, can code it, that the primary bullet hits where you aim) 3.: Shield (blocks the first hit, might refresh,/ burst outwards when hit...)

    I always liked a drone or buddy pet upgrade where it would help you out with hp or attacking enemies. You could later on have the pets or drone have level upgrades

    an upgrade I really love from binding of isaac was actually a synergy, there was some combination where you got a laser eye that shot a straight line that would pierce through multiple enemies, and then there was something else that made it ricochet BETWEEN enemies, so you got to hit a bunch of things in the room if you had enough skill to hit a single enemy. it's so satisfying!

    Awesome work! Adding Enemy Mobiles to my project is one of the next steps :D I have the BaseMobile and Player class, have an NPC .. but now for the Slimes!!! Muhahaha

    That's how I quit my job a few months ago, even though I was working for a good salary, but still... it wasn't what I liked, even though I was working as an engineer.
    Now I try to do what I like and slowly I hope to succeed. Now I'm starting with RUclips, to make myself a little known and then to promote my future games!

    I'm a sucker for bullet upgrades: more bullets, explodey bullets, bigger bullets, bouncy bullets... whatever turns the player into a Touhou boss, basically.

    I'm very late but I really enjoyed the pills from binding of Isaac. They made each run very mysterious because you don't know what the pill colors do in that run until you try them.

    Great to see just how varied you're making these enemies!
    As for upgrade ideas, you could do bouncing bullets, different elements like fire and freezing and/or an evasion ability for the player.

    Nice work on the enemies! They looked great, also thank you for blurring the spider nests, feel like you need some holy water!
    As for an upgrade in BoI, I always loved having the buddy upgrades or the abilities to make you shoot a lot faster/give you different bullet types!

    poison dmg, continous dps at lower increments, glass cannon stuff (like a buff where you loss a heart but gain thrice the dmg or somthing), healing spell, harming potion, dead cells colour coding system for weapons. etc etc. You get the gist of what im saying.

    I loved the mind controlled tears upgrade from binding of Isaac especially when brimstone was involved. It added a neat variation to the playthrough that wasn't just a stat increase.

    Great video! Love to see something meaty once they die. Not violent or anything (especially with those beautiful slimes), just squishy and ‘blingy’.

    Love 'Cursed Eye' from Isaac. Turns your attack into a single powerful bullet you have to wait to load. Having to wait between each shot makes it only beneficial in a good player's hands.

      Yes, but it has a max charge shot of three, although there is a disadvantage nobody enjoys about it and that is the fact that upon being hit their is a 50 50 chance you will be teleported out of that room in a different one

    like a sort of flame thrower that is active continuesly for like 5-10 second or a coffee that make u go very fast. Both of these could be like a power up that you can buy from like in the biding of isaac where there is a shop room, so and make a currency (coins, ruby or you own little thing) :)

    Great video! Glad to see the game is growing and shaping up :D
    I've gathered some upgrade ideas from my own notes, tried to pick something more interesting than just plain stats.
    To preface: one of the things I try to consider when designing interesting abilities is giving the player an incentive to do something they normally wouldn't want to do, or, conversely, incentive to abstain from doing something they've been relying on.
    Another thing would be enhancing already existing abilities, as well as changing the way environmental entities function, so enemies, hazards, props.
    So, here are some ideas:
    - Something to do with the dash: make it spawn projectiles, give a temporary buff, or maybe deal contact damage.
    - A close range melee attack that happens on a timer. The idea is to incentivise the player to get closer to enemies, while also requiring to be timed properly.
    - Something to do with enemies. Perhaps make them have a chance to a spawn friendly ghosts upon death.
    - How about a familiar? Maybe a friendly crawler that chases enemies and inflicts status effects.
    - And, lastly, simple stuff is also important. Stat ups (maybe that come with stat downs), stronger bullets, various bullet effects, status effects, and so on and so forth.

      Incentive to abstain from something they'd normally rely on. I love that. In Revita there's an upgrade that gives you a flat stat buff, but if you dash during a fight, you lose the stats for the rest of that fight.
      I thought that was genius, and definitely says your thinking properly about upgrades. 👀
      Also, I love the idea of a familiar. Everyone said they didn't want to kill the slime.... so maybe in the future it can be a type of companion. 🤔

    Awesome vid, great to see how much you can do with Kenney's Creature Mixer and your own pixel art skills. My fav boon in Hades was the Tidal Dash, pushes back enemies, and damages them while dashing; you can do some fun stuff with that. Isaac has so many, Brimstone stands out for me, the blood laser barrage thingy. Looking forward to seeing what upgrades you come up with.

    Upgrades:
    your gun deals half damadge, but fires twice as fast
    every time you hit a shot, there is a 10% chance for lighting to strike a random enemy on screen
    your bullets are twice as big, 50% stronger, and twice as slow
    your fire-rate is significantly slower, your bullets return to you like a boomerang
    every 5th shot is double size and pierces enemies and barriers
    your bullets now bounce off of walls (two times)
    summon a helpful spirit that follows you around and shoots a bullet towards the furthest enemy once
    every 5 seconds
    summon a (second) helpful spirit that follows you around and shoots 3 bullets at the closest enemy once every 15 seconds
    your bullets gain +30% size and damadge when they bounce, +1 bounces
    whenever you kill an enemy, they explode in a group of tiny, slow moving bullets
    every 15 enemies you kill, you heal one HP
    your gun now shoots a cloud of locusts/poison/whatever that homes in on your target, but deal their
    damage over time, instead of all at once, and move 50% slower
    when you dash, drop a bomb behind you that explodes after a brief delay (the bomb can also hurt you)
    you can dash an additional time, but it moves half as far
    when you dash, instantly fire a bullet at the closest enemy.
    your dash now deals damadge equal to your bulelet damadge to targets you collide with, and creates a small explosion that knocks enemies away at the end of the dash, but you get -90% fire-rate.
    summon a dragon egg, it hatches once you get [a certain ammount] of XP, creating a helpful baby dragon that follows you and shoots blasts of fire at enemies.
    Your movment now leaves a trail of poison that damadges enemies and dissapears after a breif delay. the size of this poison scales with your bulelet damadge
    lose half your maximum HP, deal double damadge
    enemies move twice as fast, double your fire-rate and movement speed, your bullets now perice
    once every 15 seconds, a meteor begins to fall on a random location, dealing massive damadge to anything (including the player) on that location
    your gun becomes a mini-gun, massivly reducing your fire-rate, but holding down the shoot button increases your fire-rate by 20% per second.
    your gun becomes a sniper rifle, making your able to fire one shot per second, and removing your abbility to hold down the shoot button to continusly fire. Gain +50% bullet size, +300% bullet damadge, your bullets now peirce, and +200% bullet speed
    you cannot fire while a bullet is on-screen, gain +500% bullet speed and +10% damadge
    also I would reccomend looking into having upgrades unlock other different upgrades that appear in the upgrade pools as you get them (ie: picking dragon adds a thing that makes the dragon better that can now appear this run in later upgrade unlocks)
    A good example of what i mean is in the game "20 minutes till dawn" which is like 3 dollars on steam iirc
    Most of my ideas came from 20minutes or the game Rounds, I migh reply to this with more later

    i like upgrades like cursed eyes from Isaac where you could charge you bullets and release them in a big spray or like chochy milk where it does more damage the more you charge

    I'm a sucker for multiplying your shots, like 20/20, third eye, mutant spider in Isaac. More shots mean more dopamine.

    You have a creature that follows you around dealing major damage to enemies by charging at them, but if you’re in the way of it’s charge, it will damage you

      The rooms might be a little too small for that kind of thing. But... maybe if it shot bullets that would hit you and enemies, but you could tell it where to move in the room. 🤔

    I think a good upgrade idea is to have some sort of turret you get from a boss. you can place down in a room that when you hold it you are slower. (also the turret does not shoot when you move it).

    Crown of light from Tboi. Your damage is doubles at full health (Althought to make it different, you could make it so the more health you have, the higher damage instead of just an instant buff when at full health)

    The spider spawner enemy is such a good idea, I think some kind of shield that spins around the player like the Bible from Vampire survivors but it breaks after a few hits.

    The movement and the rest of the game is smooth and looks nice, but the enemy animations are incredibly choppy which could be an eyesore and reduce the number of sales this game makes. You could either speed the animations up so they look smooth, or interpolate them, but if they stay like this, the game just won't be good.
    Also, since you scaled the enemies to become bigger/smaller using a scaling system (I can see that from the huge pixels), you can make the enemy squish use this too if you want the game to look even smoother.
    If you have time for polish at the end, you could add lighting and torches on the walls since it's a dungeon (please do, it will look a lot better). One last thing, I feel like the enemy movement is slightly too slow; you could make it slightly faster as you saw in revita.
    Otherwise a good game though, I like the pixel art!

    Now, I don't really play Rogue-likes but a nice concept from Demon Slayers is the slayer mark. Basically those who have the mark are strong but die at 25. I think there should be a buff where you press a key, lose 2 hp but gain +4 dmg and increased player speed. After a while it should go out and have a 15-30 second cooldown before you could do it again.

      That'd be really neat. I'm not sure how I would implement that exactly, but I like the idea. In risk of rain 2, you can pick up a special ability upgrade that you only get 1 of, and if you pick up a second one the first goes away.
      Maybe I could do something like that. 🤔

    You could add a item that gives bouncing projectiles like rubber cement in tboi.

    Did you see the gdevelop now have a wait event, tip: change the damage color from green to red
    Upgrade: a bouncy bullet
    Name: Rubber bullets
    Upgrade2: small bullets but faster
    Name: Pea bullets

      I might reconsider the whole system of colors. Right now the players bullet and damage text is green so you know it relates to you, and blue is the color of enemy bullets.
      In Revita the player bullets are blueish white and really stand out against the background. So I might try to get a better color scheme going later. 😅
      Also, good suggestions for upgrades. 👍

    Maybe you could implement a time freeze mechanic (like in Zelda 1) that temporarily freezes the enemies on the screen, but only for a short while?

    Double shot triple shot quad shot basically all of the increased bullet count abilities like from binding of Isaac. And that's one of the other comments say a drone or orbital maybe. Homing bullets that home in maybe there can be a synergy between homing bullets and the drone have the drone shoot homing bullets. Maybe bomb bullets that explode upon impact. Maybe an active item that turns you invincible for a few seconds. I don't know. I'm an ideas man
    I'll probably come back to this comment to edit it with more ideas or go to the next video you make about this either way I would love to play this

    Just letting you know, be careful when decreasing the opacity of that shockwave bullet on the red slime. because I've done that before and when a bullet becomes more invisible it becomes almost impossible to see but its still there and it can still hurt the player. And while playing the game it may feel unfair or unpolished to take damage from an almost invisible object. I recommend making it go fully invisible then visible again really fast right before phasing out, like when you take damage in super mario bros 3. But other than that fantastic video, I love the game so far!

      I've noticed that, and for now it'll do the trick. But later on, because that is definitely an issue, I might change it so it won't check for collision with the player unless it's above a certain level of opacity. 🤔

      @@HelperWesley I was going to suggest that at first, however if you do that, the player is going to have no idea when the shockwave is safe to walk into. But it’s your game do what you want to, I just thought I’d suggest that 😁

    I am sure is too late, but I got one or two ideas:
    PowerUps. On killing an enemy, creates -a corpse- -a fleshy- wall with a bit of health and maybe can focus enemy's attention; bullets on hit spawn more bullets in a wave towards the origin of the first bullet; bullets manually or randomly rotate, making the not gping in a straight line; enemies don't attack you until your first shot (wherever it lands); if a bullet lands in a wall, you get teleported to that position (it might get clipped); bullets left behind a "gunpowder" line which will cause damage once the bullet is destroyed (considering piersing); every 5th shot will "fragment" the bullet mid-air spawning nore bullets; bullets get force directed to your moving direction; if you shot to an enemy bullet, both explode, spawning more (maybe ally) bullets (imagine the chaos if you also include every bullet that it spawns can do the same, your own Uranium Reactor); enemy bullets that collide with ally bullets get redirected randomly or around the same as the ally bullet; generate a "force field" which makes the bullets go arround you in a semicircunference and "try" to land you from behind, but you can get more time to prevent that to happen (maybe my worst idea written here); each time you get damage, spawn -fleshy- walls arround you that destroy all bullets on contact, I mean ally or ennemy; shot a bummerang bullet; shot a DRG Leadburster®; shot/trow a manual turret (like if you where shoting from the turret position (but you are not there (you are safe (maybe away from the chaos (then you can pick it up (yes, I added a lot of "()")))))); shot a bullet that gets bigger over time; damage wire, you only need to land the first shot, which makes a connection to that enemy, each next shot goes directly towards that enemy, but can disconnect only once is dead; friendly-fire-izer bullet, not the enemy can damage other enemies (bur will not try actively to); bullet landmines, they lose speed until goes to 0; blackhole on impact; retarded explosive bullets; if you finish a room hitless, you get X hp; every first hit you recive does X% damage instead of full; if you get damage > 1 and after that the remaining hp is 1, you get 1 hp back; if you are full hp and you restore hp, you get invulneravility to the next hit instead; bullets cause brain damage, I mean make their IA target and move randomly sometimes; bullets make the enemies electric conductors and can cause electrocution, by probability or killing, the before hitted enemies recive some damage maybe with electric arcs that can damage too; random Midas hit, sometimes the hitted enemy dies instantly, and drops nothing but (high amounts of) currency; bouncy bullets; the same as electric arc but with walls, and make the arc as soon as a bullet lands a wall; dead enemies spawn spikes; hitting wall spawns spikes.
    Ok, I should stop here because my head is a non-stop bad idea generator.

    LAZOOORRR. Also soymilk from TBOI, also would be cool to have a way to get smaller versions of the enemies as pets which attack enemies, but not of the same kind. (pet slime wont cannibalize other slimes)

    Don't think this is the best you can do, but! Very informative non-the-less.
    For upgrades....
    Be original, but start with the basics. You be surprised with the stuff you can come up with.
    With basics I mean, damage, speed, health... Get that done, get creative.. it's your idea of a game ;)

    How about a rage ability? Once your health goes below a certain amount it you get a (number)% dmg increase?
    Or or the opposite. As long as your at full hp you have a dmg increase.
    Idk, I only have dmg increasing abilities on my mind rn 😅

    Upgrade idea you have a arm coming out from hell and they grab the monsters that you chose for it to grab and they are dragged to hell.

    Litle late cause just found the channel but your stuff looks greate!
    But a holy mantle type of effect: One per room just blocks one hit. Gives alot of more safety net but gives no real combat advantage besides avoiding litle bit of DMG here and there

      Currently I'm working on making everything stack, so I'm not sure if thatll fit in this round of upgrades, but I do want to add unique upgrades later in development. 👍 it'll be a little trickier because I'll have to make take them out if the randomized list after you already have it, but I definitely think unique upgrades will be great to add.

      @@HelperWesley One solution to make it "Stackable" is making it have like lets just say 3 room cooldown. And getting another one reduces the cooldown to only 2 rooms. It makes it stack to sertain degree... But like you can probably imagine it comes to hard stop of once every room and you would have to once again code it to not be in the pool when you can't stack it anymore...
      So yeah kinda can be made stackable but keeping it Unique makes it easyer to balance and work around. One easy option is an If statement of :
      If(Player.Holymantle == True){
      RollAgain();
      }else{
      Add item
      }
      And this can be extended to check multiple different items in a single if statement but when time gose on and there is more Unique items this will come realy heavy to do... Or atleast an absolute pain to maintain... So would not recomend as permanent solution

    So as for the upgrade, maybe an upgrade that increases damage by a lot but greatly decreases range? Range is quite unused in most games though there's definitely a lot of fun stuff you can do with it

    In spelunky there is this spider veb gun that shoots spider web that slowes down things in it and when something moves enought in there it fades avay

      @@HelperWesley would be amazing. I mean that kind of game i used to play and usually (if it is good) i also like to pay a little bit. My most favorit way for games like that is seen in "Brawlhall". You do not need to pay to play. But you can pay to get nicer stuff (do not change the game quality at all) and i allready spend like 40€ on it xD

      ​@@ChristianZenker Likewise, I'm a fan of the free to play model with cosmetic upgrades.
      In Warframe, you can literally get everything in the game for free with very few exceptions, and then you pay for cosmetics and quality of life things that don't impact the play much at all.
      (And you can trade with other players for the premium currency, so you can still get those things if you're willing to trade stuff for it)

      I actually plan to release this as a game myself.
      This version will likely not be an example in GDevelop. Examples have to be near perfectly optimized and set up in a way that makes it easy for people to learn from and modify.
      The version I'm working on in these videos is an absolute mess under the hood.🤣

    for the entirety of my game development, not once have i thought of making objects the same size as their art and just zooming in, this entire time i've been scaling up my art (which also uses way more space when i have lots of art). facepalm emoji.

      Well it has its trade offs.
      Sleeper games, the dev who made hyperspace dogfight, told me they do both, scale up the art and zoom the camera in.

    Why not have a spinning shot if surrounded by multiple enemies as an upgrade or power up?

      Not reason not to, but I haven't decided on whether or not I'd use activatable upgrades yet. 🤔
      Maybe instead, it could be a passive that triggers whenever you get hit? That could be cool, and it would pair well with a high health or defense build. 👀

    split shot (shots doubled, spread doubled, damage halved)
    continuous fire (turnes current multishot into a single stream of bullets, same fire rate, but one shot at a time)
    Fragmenting (bullets either shatter into smaller, weaker bullets after certain distances, or when an enemy dies it fragments into shots)
    piercing (pierces an enemy per time taken or a set amount if can only be taken once
    charge shot (ability to stack damage into a single shot via holding fire, shooting when letting go
    please please please have meta progression

      Another thing i like from isaac (and most other people probably do too) is shot replacement effects. Eg. Mom's knife, brimstone, dr fetus etc. Although maybe that wouldn't work too great if you're planning to add different weapons

    The game looks awesome, but there is one thing I would change, (I'm assuming that this will change once you add more upgrades, but still) Whenever I play the game, half of my runs feel really slow, because I haven't gotten any upgrades that affect how fast I kill enemies. Sure I can be as fast or as tanky as can be but you still feel weak when you only do a little bit of damage per shot, so maybe once you get around to the upgrades, make damage related stuff a little bit more common, or just add more stuff related to damage. This may just be my bad luck or personal feelings though.
    But even with that it's still really good! Just my personal take.
    Edit: If I'm gonna complain about upgrades I should probably give some upgrade ideas huh
    Scarier face from nuclear throne: less enemy health, makes me happy
    Literally anything that can damage you but is really powerful from isaac: I like the risk reward
    The entire rarity system from risk of rain 2: the more common items are basic stat upgrades, and the rarer something is, the weirder the effect it has, for example, Soldiers syringe (common item): +fire rate, Spare drone parts (legendary item): gives you a drone, and buffs the damage of all other drones you have, the drone from this item respawns every level if it died.

      Yeah, the first thing I need to rework as I go forward is how enemy health and damage scaling works. If you don't get an attack upgrade early the game feels VERY slow. 😅
      Recently played through Revita, and they do balance really well. Each upgrade is tiny, like 5-15% buff, but because the stat upgrades happen fairly often it feels good to get. 🤔
      So needless to say, I'll be tweaking that as I start to add new upgrades. I'm not sure how I'll do upgrades just yet in the final version, I've been looking at so many different examples and I want to incorporate aspects of them all. lol. Brotato's system of "finish a round" and then spend points for upgrades is what I'm sort of leaning towards.

    А що,якщо,куля влучає в фрагмент стіни, він не тільки здригається,але й знищується,а куля рикошетить у випадковому напрямку чи в гравця.
    Можна зробити боса зі схожою механікою щита,але щит одноразовий і має декілька шарів захисту

      I was thinking about adding a "variation" of the shield enemy that would reflect bullets. I didn't have time to make it during this video, but maybe I'll come back to it in the future. 👍
      (But now I'm wondering if I should just make a different boss version of every enemy in the game. 👀)

      Там на основі деяких ворогів, створені боси. Коли проходиш біом(5 рівнів) то в наступному біомі цих ворогів уже немає....
      Але я думаю це можна покращити. Гравець знищив головне гніздо павуків,деякі павуки розбіглися і гніздо вибухнуло. В наступних рівнях,в неочікуваних місцях можуть ховатися павуки і чекати момента,щоб вбити гравця,бо він зруйнував їхню домівку.
      Поведінка павуків та вигляд(може вони буду червоні він люті) має змінитися, бути більш агресивна,можливо вони стрілятимуть сіткою,якою закидає підлогу і якщо гравець на неї стане,то не зможе рухатися.
      Можливо вони буду рухатися з високою швидкістю,що для гравця буде важко в нього поцілити і т.д
