“Don’t make my mistake, kid...don’t follow orders, think of yourself.” - Barbatus. (Died in the termite battle) We all loved Barbatus, I’m still thinking of myself.
It's amazing how you can create a memorable and likable character with just a few lines and moments of screen time. RIP Barbados. You taught us all to think for our selves.
This was by far one of the most morbid depictions of war I have ever seen in any film let alone animated, I would have been depressed drawing an image of a war torn battlefield i could only imagine How the storyboard artists and animators felt..and this somber score both made it depressingly tragically and beautiful at the same time.
It's one of the many aspects that make this one of my all time favorite films. I also found it nice how Barbatus only gets a few minutes of screen time, yet they manage to make him such a likeable and honorable character. Makes his death all the more emotional.
It's crazy to remember as well that this was written before 9/11 when there were very few people who understood the horrors of holding their friend who was missing limbs as they passed. It had been right about a decade since the US had been involved in any conflict where more than a dozen US military were killed. The closest to a morbid experience to this would've been Somalia. Desert Storm though was the last one with a huge battlefield. Anyways, the writing was incredible for a movie like this. I always go back to this scene because of how powerful it is.
And yet the majority of ppl still follow orders without thinking about it. The only ones who actually takes Barbados’s advise are the ones who don’t forget that in life it’s far more important to question things than to just blindly follow other people’s words that you don’t even know personally. Live with a free thought, not with a dogmatic ideal. Sadly dogmatic ideals are ingrained into human beings and the only ones to break them out of their shell is for them to think for themselves. There’s nothing wrong with ideals but do not become a slave to it. To believe in ideals, you must also be willing to betray them as you might be wrong. Keep searching and adapt. Do not become idle or apathetic in your philosophy. For apathy is another form of death. Barbados knew in the end of his time, he was just an expendable soldier for his colony. That ls why he told z to think for himself, so that he doesn’t go through the same fate as he or his fallen comrades did. He wasn’t only a friend to z but in some ways Barbados saw him as a little brother.
I remember when I first saw Barbados dies after, he was decapitated from the termites battle as a kid. As an adult, it makes me realize that it’s very sad 😞 to see all the 🐜 soldiers died in battle.

This right here. Back when movies were GOOD. And it was okay to show kids death, sacrifice, and loss. Not boring Marvel sunset ending everythings gonna be okay bullshit. People fail to realize its OKAYYYYYYY to show kids these things
The song and scene fits perfectly well with any kind of war story whether its from a surviving soldier or us the viewers look at the after affects of a battle. Seriously put the music in the movie like saving private Ryan and you'll get that same feeling as you do in antz.
poor barbados ; ( he was a good ant and a good soldier dieng for his people and the queen and one of the best short ant in this movie Rest in peace barbados
the general was being manipulative and very sick that he plan to create a powerful of soldier ants. but I'm thinking that Z have save Weaver from the fate that Barbatus' have. Thanks.
Mandible knew he would'nt be able to proceed into his plans to take over the colony with a whole army of soldiers loyal to the queen. Thus he had to send them to their deaths in order to eliminate those who would have probably protected the queen and the rest of the colony. Then without these soldiers the remaining soldiers are the ones showing more loyalty to Mandible's schemes than the queen in order to be the products of a strong colony according to the General's ideas of a perfect society.
Just think, he was here because of the most stereotypical reason to be a soldier--to Get the Girl. And it landed him in one of the worst wars ever seen by his culture, with a friend dying in his arms. And the cold startling revelation that, if he hadn't gone and done it, another friend, a childhood friend, would absolutely be dead instead. And in return, he realized the absolute corruption of his culture's politics, who send men and women to die... for Power, and to ensure that many of the strong do not make it back.
I have a theory: What if Barbados came into contact with the queen and somehow she told him probably before being killed (or escaped) that they didn’t do anything wrong and somehow Barbados, being the good soldier he was knew about Mandibles treachery but was too late and was beheaded by her own soldiers. That’s one theory the other one is what if there was somehow ants that survived but were captured by the termites and executed before the queen. The last one is a bit of betrayal, what if after and all the ants were killed there was Barbados and an ant soldier that somehow survived the ordeal and brought the queen to heel and she told them the exact same thing in the first theory but the ant soldier wouldn’t listen and just killed her with an axe(the two-headed weapon that most of them had.) Barbados then knew that he had to make amends right but the soldier saw this as treason and beheaded him before being probably killed by a spear thrusted by Barbados eventually holding on before passing away in Z’s arms.
"Fuck this movie. I don't care if it's actually good or not, the image of a decapitated talking ant head fucks you up when you're 5 years old" -Alex Sennett, Letterboxd In other words, this scene is deep.
