They really do not rest in this one. I remember on a short video of Scott practising his side of this, their arranger Ben Bram commented something along the lines of "Wouldn't it be fun if we change it a little every time?" with Scott replying (paraphrased) "I'll never forgive you for this". They say this one is one of the hardest to perform live.
This is a carol that I literally could not stand to hear UNTIL PTX gave it this wonderful modernization and upgraded approach. Your comments were perfect and revealed all of these innovations so very well.
Almost same. Straight No Chaser also has a very fun version, but in general I agree with you -- this song gets horribly repetitive and boring after the age of eight or ten or thereabouts.
PTX has a way of taking sometimes mundane Christmas carols and making them, beautiful, exciting, haunting, entertaining, or just plain stunning. This has never been a favorite, but I like this version. I had to sing Carol of the Bells in high school choir and didn't like or appreciate it much. Their version is not just my favorite version, but a top favorite carol. Merry Christmas! What a fun ride!
Thanks very much for your reaction! I don't particularly like this carol as such, but what blows me away every time is the genius of the arrangement, covering 8 different genres of music and changing the harmony each time they count backwards at breakneck speed. I don't know anything that truly compares. And then there's the fact they're doing this live - as others have said, there's a video of Scott practising his parts and cursing the day they decided to actually sing this at their concerts. It's very, very hard, and that level of technical skill, breath control, and general in-tune-ness with each other is just so damn impressive. I particularly like the crunch chord on 'Three French Hens' with Scott, Mitch and Kirstie, I think when counting back from 6 or 7. And the double bass for Kevin's number 10 is just pure ear candy.
I just went to their concert in Nashville TN on Dec 5th and they sang this live. Sounds exactly the same, if not better. I think that’s one of the reasons I love them so much because I swear they are better in person than the studio version. Blows my mind!
They indeed perform this live and to say verse 8 to 12 are super crazy live is an understatement. They did so many different genres of music ❤❤❤❤❤ I really enjoy your thoughts. This was fun for them. There is a video of Scott practicing his part in his headphones and he is counting it and performing only his part.
One of the things I love about PTX is their changes to Christmas carols. I spent all my school years in choir singing Christmas carols. I truly came to hate Christmas music until....PTX. I have become a fan of PTX Christmas songs.
Thank you for the ptx Christmas reactions this season. While unique, 12 Days is not in my top choices of theirs. Don't know if you will be able to squeeze in one more but thought I'd mention an original, "New Year's Day"(live) from 2016 New Year's Rocking Eve with Carson Daly. This was from the Avi era. Just a thought. I hope you have a wonderful Christmas and thank you for your hard work in presenting these videos. 🎄 Merry Christmas to your followers!
Interestingly enough, when this song was first released I was kind of "meh" about it. Thought they were trying to do too much with it. But then I saw them live in concert and it made much more sense. It’s a perfect opening song for introducing all the members. Introduces each one at a time individually and then builds and builds really showing what they do together as a group. Really showcases their creativity and talent in their field. Not my favorite to listen to, but one of my favorites to experience in concert.
This is ✨PERFECTION✨ what I LOVE about this is that I was not fond of the original version but as always, PENTATONIX's SUPERB arranging makes this song SPECTACULAR! PENTATONIX along with Ben Bram are GENIUSES.
They even added a little surprise by changing the order of verses nine through twelve. This is the most enjoyable version of this carol I've ever heard.
This version is always fun. Of course it wasn't such fun for them....a TikTok short of Scott practising this is available in Scott's Instagram. It's pretty nuts!! You caught something I didn't notice...their line-up during the 5 Golden Rings segment changed a few times.
I am always drawn to Kevin in this one. All the "drum" changes. I don't know how he keeps them all straight. To me, Kevin is the standout in this one. Still hoping you do their cover of Waltz of the Flowers from The Nutcracker.
FINALLY! I was waiting fir this one! Thank you Sir Hairless 😊, your thoughts are very accurate as always, The six members of PTX are geniuses! The creative force is expressed Flawlessly with PTX❤🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
What a great reaction Sir H!! PTX at their best (post Avi) ! 😊 And I loved that you included the live version on your Patreon - it is so good and puts a different spin on things. I adore Kevin's suit! 👌 Your analysis and enjoyment of this performance is really contagious!! 😃 I have to say - your Christmas offerings are quite something - we feel spoilt!! 😆 Thank you Sir Hairless!! 🙏 🎶🎄
There is a video recording of Scott practicing his part of that carol with headphones on - it shows how truly crazy this arrangement is 😉 I won't paste a link here (yt will block it), but you should find it with ease. It's short but fun 😉
I never liked this song, but that changed with Pentatonix' version. It's so much fun to watch them do it live. You saw a lot that I never registered before. The place where you're trying to remember what song it reminds you of was one of those places. It reminds me of another song they do -- but I can't remember which one at the moment. I'll be listening to all of them while driving this Christmas, so if it's a Christmas song, I may figure out which one it is.... Thanks as always for a great reaction!
Generally speaking, the only redeeming quality of this song in my opinion is as Sir Hairless pointed out--it can potentially be fun if you are actually singing it with a bunch of others...being silly in the process helps. It's like a Christmas version of 99 Bottles Of Beer On The Wall. The attraction of PTX's version is seeing how much variety they were able to put into an otherwise monotonous song using different musical stylings. Watching their video was the first time I got to the end of the song without being bored.
For me, PTX took a song I detested, and they reinvented it in such a way that left me really liking it. They saw the potential behind the song and pulled it out...basically taking a raw cut stone and polishing it into a real gem. This is the only version that now exists for me lol. I hope you enjoyed the live version, I believe it is a little chaotic, in a good way.
Sadly we don't share favorites. At this point I think Kevin got your heart, care to admit it or not hahaha, while mine is Matt BUT they do a lot together so we could say we are good hahaha. Ok now, I loved this reactions, really entertaining, I watched the whole thing till the very very very end. This is one of their more difficult arrangements to perform live, just like Bohemian Rhapsody. Fans had been speculating on how they'll perform this live when they released the MV. At that time, they haven't used backtracks for their live performaces.
This arrangement showcases a lot of their previous work. In addition to the Daft Punk sound, they feature sounds and rhythms from their brilliant 90’s dance medley, especially the last three songs - Cher’s “Believe,” Crystal Waters “Gypsy Woman,” and one of my favorites from the entire performance, CeCe Peniston “Finally.” That’s why it sounded so familiar to you but hard to place! 🤣
One long car trip with my aunt we counted how many things the person would be if they were given things every day in the number that the songs states and it was 364 things! One thing for every day until the next Christmas! This song for me is then tied to a memory with my aunt and I get to think of her every time I hear it! I absolutely love PTX's version because it is fun and light as the song should be! I truly don't like large choir versions of the carol/song because it's too formal and I always thought this song makes me think of a court jester more than a serious choir. Thank you, for analysing this song! I always learn so much from you about how all the parts of music fit together to be fantastic and emotional.
Oh yes. A friend caught something else about this video. It's a subtle homage to videos past. You saw the daft punk throwback, there was also Love Again even the last was similar to avi from baby tonix days.
I enjoyed singing this in choir when I was (much) younger, but it has never been a pleasant choice for repeated listening (or singing) for me . . . until PENTATONIX, of course. Every time I listen to PTX's version I notice something new, which is typical of them and why they captured my attention from their first Sing Off performance, and have ever since. BTW: I chose your channel to beome a patron on Patreon because you always enhance my enjoyment of their videos, both with honest appreciation of their talent--flummery not a welcome travel companion down my PTX rabbit hole--and an opportunity to become a music student again. Thank you.
This is such a fun song. The live performance is really cute! Will you be featuring Voiceplay's "Zat you Santa Clause"? It's great. Love the Christmas pudding hat.
Have never been a big fan of this song, and yours is probably the only reaction to it I'll watch. Most of their Christmas songs I can listen to countless times. This isn't one of them.
12 Days is the most well-known of the holiday counting songs, but I really recommend you checking out the video for Home Free and Kenny Rogers doing “Children, Go Where I Send Thee,” which is just wonderful.
Really fun and enjoy the tempo - there is always humor in the faces of the singers.😊although on Ant & Dec show with Robbie Williams - that version a true laugh!
Just a little off topic here, there was a science fiction novel I read where this song provided the key to unlocking and shutting down an out of control AI. The title of the book was "The Rings of the Master" by Jack Chalker.
I'm loving all the PTX! Here's an interesting take: The partridge in a pear tree is Jesus Christ. Two turtle doves are the Old and New Testaments. Three French hens stand for faith, hope, and love. The four calling birds are the four gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke and John. The five golden rings recalled the Torah or Law, the first five books of the Old Testament. The six geese a-laying stand for the six days of creation. Seven swans a-swimming represent the sevenfold gifts of the Holy Spirit--Prophesy, Serving, Teaching, Exhortation, Contribution, Leadership, and Mercy. The eight maids a-milking are the eight Beatitudes. Nine ladies dancing are the nine fruits of the Holy Spirit--Love, Joy, Peace, Patience, Kindness, Goodness, Faithfulness, Gentleness, and Self Control. The ten lords a-leaping are the Ten Commandments. The eleven pipers piping stand for the eleven faithful disciples. The twelve drummers drumming symbolizes the twelve points of belief in the Apostles' Creed. Christmas is not without Christ. Stay well.
I wonder, not obsessively, about the clasped hands during “five golden rings,” kind of the classic vocal music pose. I think it first came to my attention in Sound of Music when the Von Trapps performed at the music festival. Or maybe it was the single lady that bowed her little heart out when she placed third or second? Like I said, just wondering. Loved your reaction and analysis, as always! Peace and happy holidays to you and yours …

I would love to see your reaction to 'The recording of Evergreen'. It's behind the scenes of them in studio recording their Evergreen Album. I think you'll like that one.
I would absolutely love to see that, too, but I do rather hope Sir Hairless will first react to more of the songs in the Evergreen video that he hasn't yet covered (The Prayer; Little Saint Nick; It's Been A Long, Long Time; We Wish You A Merry Christmas; Over The River; I Saw Three Ships). I personally found it far more meaningful to see/hear the songs in process once I was familiar with Pentatonix's versions of these songs; I think a lot of the genius of the process would have been lost on me were I not familiar with the end product first. Then again, that may just be me and how my brain works.
This is probably my least favorite christmas song ( outside of Blue Christmas because I heard that over and over growing up as my mom's favorite) but i love how the spiced it up. Its still repetitive as h but it's at least FUN.
I don’t like this song at all. I only love hearing what they did with it by singing in different genres, rhythms, etc. I also love the complexity of the arrangement, and the fact that they can do it brilliantly live. I can’t remember if you have reacted to My Favorite Things, but Mitch has those long sideburns in that one, as well (and in Thank You- I think-, a song that Scott and Mark wrote). MFT is another song with a surprise arrangement 😊.

Its still repetitive as h but it's at least FUN.
google hidden code behind 12 days of Christmas. it's a way to teach religious truths.
They lost when Matt replaced Avi. No offense to Matt because he’s amazing but he’s not Avi…..
I do love Avi ❤️ Matt and Avi are different and bring different things to the group
I really don't like Pentatonix
I'm curious. Is there any particular reason that you'd like to share, or just personal preference?
So why you here?
