Bro the eyes of the whale said it all to him : how it feels to lose your friends and family one by one. To live each day in fear that one day it might be my turn
dude he knew a simple harpon would have done nothing to this behemoth who pulled a galeon like its was nothing
@@doragonzx agreed. like u say he pulled a galeon .so do these boats stand a chance
@@doragonzx I agree. I read the Nathaniel Philbrick book the movie was based on, and by the end the men were so starved and weak they couldn't pierce the skin of a dolphin or shark. There's no way one lance would've taken down an eighty foot whale. It's still an amazing scene, though.
@@vegasgirl3538 Its clearly larger than 80 feet in this film, I dont know if the filmmakers were saying the whale was 80ft and just made it look larger in the film because 80ft wouldnt be imposing enough or the script actually made it larger than life and their intention was to have a 200ft whale, wouldn't be possible but this thing wasn't normal in the film, a bit like mosasaurus in Jurassic World, a 60ft animal made to look larger than life and probably about 150ft.
@@1010thechamp If I remember right there was a journal entry from one of the few survivors that said the whale was the "last of the great leviathans" of the old world or something implying this whale was alive well before whaling became established in the areas. I could be wrong but it would make a certain amount of sense of it attacking a giant whaling galleon rather than retreating.
I think we can all agree Moby was really the one showing mercy in this scene
Technically yeah, all Moby was doing was protecting his own, just like Owen would of protected his own wife and child. Him not throwing the lance and not showing aggression was all it took. And that's why they made it home.
"nah, he let us slide" - Snoop Dogg
He gave them a chance. Would they still try and kill it, or would they accept mercy? When it became clear they werent going to fight anymore, Moby knew his pod was safe from them and left

Perfectly captures Herman Melville’s original message (and warning) of mankind.

The movie took too many liberties and stray away from what really happened which was even more shocking then in the movie. Highly recommend reading both the book by Owen Chase and Thomas Nickerson, the cabin boy.

I love that scene. Eye to eye is one of the most beautiful things that can be powerful. Looking deep into another animals eyes is like looking into the eye of a innocent creature. Some animals doesn’t like if you stare at them. Like when you stare at a horse’s eye it is breathtaking.
If Owen had thrown that spear, Moby would’ve instantly killed them all.
But by not throwing it, Moby let them leave.
*Owen saved his entire crew by showing mercy and passing Moby’s test.*
Blood for blood. Life for life. Mercy for mercy.
Moby showed up to see their reaction? If they learned the lesson to respect the sea?
@@danielelunardi9812right
This scene is much more intense then it seems. It's very clear that Owen and the whale had the most important thing in common, both are survivors, loosing various things just to try to live another day. In 20 seconds they made the movie for me.
When they fought the whale fought back.
When they showed it mercy the whale showed them mercy.
Are we not going to appreciate Chris Hemsworth amazing acting here
Everyone does
We do
no matter how much he attacked and killed, he’s still an animal with emotions, who has a life as sensitive as ours
He only wanted protect his family
He was just defending his people. Its all about respect
It's more than that, they literally killed his mate and calf

What’s crazy is that it wasn’t really Owen showing mercy in this scene, but Moby. That spear wouldn’t have really done anything, but made him angry like before. Moby from the start could’ve just attacked them and killed them all, but he stopped for a minute and wanted to see after all they had experienced if they learned anything and if this species truly understood what respect or mercy was. Which when proven they did, Moby felt confident enough that they had learned their lesson, and let them leave.
He would have killed the whale, he had him on a silver platter.
@@Sanderus not really…
The whale had already destroyed their ship and 3 boats. So this spear wouldn't solve much of anything. In fact the whale who took pity on them.

By the way, this scene I think people may kind of misunderstand. It was the whale who was showing mercy.
“Very well, Hunter. A mercy for a mercy.”
After suffering so much, Mr. Chase knew that killing the whale is no longer worth the vengeance. The whale somehow sense the men were too weak to fight back, so it circles around trying to look at them in the eyes. Once both creatures meet eye to eye, their souls reflect with one another. Looking at the animal's eye, Chase sees through the soul of the whale, realising it's just an animal protecting itself and its kind by attacking the humans who may pose a threat. Knowing this, Chase looked at his own soul reflected through the whale. He realised that he and mankind have been killing countless of whales for their oil and meat, and thus making them no better than the whale who was only defending itself by the dangerous humans. Once Chase realised this and know it's no longer worth it anymore, he spared the whale knowing the suffering he has been through by the lost of his men just as how much the lives of the whales they killed. Sensing no vengeance or aggression from the man, the whale spared the humans as well, thus swimming away with the humans no longer a danger to it and its pod. When both sides are at their lowest, weakest point, they lay down their arms, look in the eyes and understanding, they knew it is no longer necessary to continue fighting and made a truce.
Ironically Owen Chase return to the ocean and was a whaler for 20 years.
@@volfgankamei5348 As long as he is hunting them moderately and not out of sheer joy, hatred or prejudice but with consideration and feelings of remorse
@@afifzahiruddinrohaizan52 that doesn't change anything though. Whether the whales are killed with compassion or hatred doesn't change the fact that the whales are still hunted and killed.
@@volfgankamei5348 I'm aware of that. But I believe that itbis nature's way of telling man that there's more to the world that not even human cam control. And a reminder to mankind that nature can fight back as well. Moby is one of many examples of beings who are the embodiment of the force of nature.
I never thought it was mercy up until I saw this title, I’ve always believed that he made a smart decision because he knows that if he throws the harpoon the whale may or may not die, but the ships are definitely going under.
Loved this movie when a saw it. This scene shows us The respect Between two great hunters
Insane to me the guy saying “THROW THE LANCE!”
Like dude it’s already killed 90 percent of you and you want to piss it off more?
Yeah..the logic of the suicidal😅
That spear wouldn’t have killed Moby, but Moby did give Owen the opportunity to spear him because he was testing him and wanted to see if he had learned anything. And once Moby saw he had, he let him leave.
That was touching that he and the whale understood each other, however I always thought that deep within his mind even if he throws thespear straight into the whale's eye their fate will still be sealed.
Eye to eye contact is always a powerful and emotional message that words can’t even express it
Brilliant but massively underrated film!
You can't have revenge on someone or something, it just adds more hurt to the world.
One of my favorite scenes
By Thor’s hammer, that’s a big whale!
Owen apparently looked at his first harpoon near his eye and realized that this was a bad thing. The animal is just fighting for its life and therefore he did not attack him. This is probably why Owen left whaling and switched to merchant ships
So basically this whole time the whale was defending itself ... Ik during this time whale meat was a need for people ... through our eyes we see a whale attacking a ship for no reason , but we see moby was defending himself the whole time ... attacking any ship that could pose a threat ... but here I guess he did this to show he doesn’t want to fight no more and that you pose no threat so there is no need to fight anymore
It was more for the small amount of oil in the whale's snout they were really after. The meat was just a bonus, but really didn't last very long before becoming rotten since this was before refrigeration. Whale expeditions could go on for months just to fill one barrel. So many whales lost for such little gain or need even. Is it no wonder whales like this one exist? They're not just defending themselves: they're fighting for other members of their pod and beyond.
The harsh truth is: humans are the merciless ones, not the whale. Ahab is the symbol of that mercilessness.
He did still have a spear tho, I think Moby was testing him to see if he would actually throw it. He wanted to see if he had learned anything, but if he had thrown the spear I think Moby would’ve just immediately killed them all. Moby was the one showing mercy in this scene.
1:30 To see how much that whale suffered at the hands of human beings by that hook at the eye the deep scars loss of its family here is a first time one human being understands wt it is going through. And the whale could easily break their boats but decided to peaceful pass them
That was the moment when Mr. Chase and Moby finally understood each other. LOVE the music, btw!!
This scene is sooo touching..
What's crazy is Nickerson went out again with Pollard as captain a few years after making it home. Pollard ran the ship aground near Hawaii
Yeah that dude was cursed or the most stupid man alive
True story movies are always the best
The ending music somewhat fells like I'm visiting my old days
Same bro same..also feels sad too u know😔
The equivalent of an ant asking his brother "why didn't you bite that human"🤦😁
They should’ve used Francis McBeth’s piece “Of Sailors and Whales” as the score for the movie, that would have been a very touching experience…
The EYES are the WINDOW of the SOUL!
I just realized that both Chris Hemsworth and Tom Holland are in this movie. Thor and Spider-Man are in a movie about whaling. Yup...
I don’t get emotional much. But this scene did it for me.
Why is the special effects and the cgi so damn good in this movie and i don’t care what people say about this movie this movie is so good i love it the acting is good, the sets Are good and the music is so awsome
Somehow humans think they are the most powerful beings on Earth. It is this mindset which leads humans to an early death or a near death experience when dealing with forces of nature.
"Why didn't you kill it", reminds of my conversation with the 13yo old girl in my basement
Would you consider yourself to be a good person?
How many lies have you told, and what do you call someone who lies? Have you ever stolen something, and what do you call someone who steals? Have you ever taken God’s name in vain (very serious; in Old Testament times, the Jews wouldn’t even say the name of God for fear of blasphemy) - even ‘OMG’? One more: Jesus said whoever looks at a woman to lust after her has already committed adultery in his heart; have you ever looked with lust?
Well I’m not judging you - but if you’ve done these things then you’re a liar, thief, blasphemer and adulterer-at-heart; that’s how seriously God takes sin. He is Holy (perfectly good/righteous and separate from sin) which means that H e is perfect in justice - and if He were to judge you by the moral law (we’ve already looked at 4 commandments) would you be innocent or guilty? Heaven or Hell? The answer is hell - the wrath of God upon you for your sin. Is that concerning?
But fortunately, God’s will is not that you perish. He wants all men everywhere to be saved. So do you know what He did for us guilty sinners? In self-giving mercy, He sent His Son Jesus Christ. He lived the perfect life that we should have lived - tempted at all points and yet He NEVER sinned. Through His life, being in very nature God, He revealed God to men; but we in our hatred condemned Him to death. On that cross as Jesus suffered, He took on the sin of the world and was judged in our place; receiving God’s wrath. You and I broke God’s law, but Jesus paid the fine. God can justly forgive us.
On that cross He died, then He was buried, but 3 days later He was raised from the dead - conquering death and Hell and ushering in The Kingdom of God. He then ascended to the right hand of God the Father (where He came from) now Lord of the living and the dead. God has fixed a date when He will judge the world in righteousness. What you need to do is repent (In humility, acknowledge your sin before God and turn to a relationship with Him) and trust ALONE in Jesus Christ and His work on the cross; and God will grant you the gift of the Holy Spirit. Then be baptised.
When you place your trust in Jesus - the Lord and Saviour - these things will happen:
1) God will forgive the sins that you have committed; they were paid for by Jesus at the cross.
2) The perfect life that Jesus lived will be credited to you. He will find you holy and blameless on judgement day (and now), as Christ’s righteousness covers you.
3) You receive a place in Christ’s kingdom as an adopted child of God. God becomes your Father. Eternal life isn’t just about living forever, but a personal relationship with God Himself. That life can start now; The Father will reveal Himself to you if you seek Him.
4) God doesn’t just save you from the penalty of your sin (Hell). He can save you from the power of sin itself. Whoever practices sin is a slave of sin; but when you repent and believe the gospel [WHICH HAS BEEN DESCRIBED] the Holy Spirit comes to dwell in you and sanctify you (working in you to further abandon sin and turn to the will of God). When the end of the age comes, and eternity begins, this work will be brought to completion as you are finally freed from the presence of sin.
Jesus offers to take away your sin and to give you His righteousness; you must receive it by faith. Choose this day if you will align with the world, or with Jesus and His kingdom - only His is eternal.
ROMANS 10:9 - If you confess with your mouth Jesus as Lord and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved.
EPHESIANS 2:8-9 - For by grace you have been saved through faith, and this is not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no-one may boast

Fortunately, the man had just enough brain cells left to realize it was the whale that was showing them mercy. Had he been foolish enough to attack, the beast would not only have survived that harpoon (at worst, being blinded in one eye). It would have then doubtlessly retaliated, and one more tail smash would send the sailors all sinking down to Davy Jones' locker.
They were just a few men in two tiny boats, near starvation, and the whale was nowhere near as weakened as them. They had no chance AT ALL of killing it in their condition. The First Mate recognized that he'd lost and that continuing the fight would accomplish absolutely nothing except guaranteeing the crew's deaths after all they'd struggled through to survive.
Your right
I guess my first thought was they needed to eat the whale to survive
@@asddfasdqwe7389 Nope, I think they were already adequately full on their dead crewmate's flesh. Even if they weren't, let's say they somehow killed the whale. What then? How would they harvest enough meat before its corpse began to sink (I don't know how long it would float before losing its buoyancy)?
How much meat could they cut off with their little knives before the current took it away (They'd likely be too weak to chase it for long, even with full bellies, due to muscle deterioration)? How long before sharks were attracted to the blood in the water? How would they prepare the meat for safe consumption?
Human flesh is one thing. But starved, likely already sick men in a time period with far less advanced medicine ingesting raw whale meat would introduce God knows how much mercury into their systems (Look up the long known effects of mercury in retail sold whale & dolphin meat; I did a research project on that in college, scary stuff). Overall, as gut-wrencing as it is to admit, whether the whale could be killed or not, cannibalism was the more practical option under the circumstances.
