If you want to hear another young rock band, check out Voice of Baceprot. They are a heavy metal band with a lot of influences from heavy metal of the 90s and 2000s (no growling!) from a small village in Indonesia. I wish Amy would review them, but they aren't that big (yet!). The bassist is amazing, and I want to be the drummer when I grow up. ruclips.net/video/WPVo_QyS0Hw/видео.html
Im a oldie rock lover, but my 17yr daughter dragged me to Greta van Fleet concert in Amsterdam… Since then, I’m a big fan. Please review Broken bells/ Light my love
Their songwriting, music and sound has certainly grown since this, for example Heat Above and Meeting the Master. They are fantastic live, I've seen them once in 2019 and I'm going to see them again here in Brisbane, Australia next week.
Heat Above and Meeting the Master are entirely different types of songs, I can't really compare them to 'classic rock' songs like this and then claim they've grown. I don't think they've grown substantially - after all, this song sounds amazing and I hear no faults in the singer's voice. The songwriting of this song is also not flawed or faulty, it's just uncomplicated. Being uncomplicated versus complicated doesn't denote growth, just a change in style.
These kids had good parents. Respect for playing your instruments live and recording it. No autotune, no 47 overdubs. The great rock bands did this on their records, Led Zeppelin, DLR Van Halen, etc. That way, you don't disappoint people when you play live because you can't reproduce sounds you made on your record. It's good hard rock, unrestrained to the point of bordering on chaos, but kept in the pocket yet.
If I remember correctly, they recorded Highway Tune while still being at school! So you are correct when you say they are young, even though Plant was only 18 when the first Zeppelin album was released. But I also agree that this feels more like a very good replica of the 60-70s rock music, rather then a unique piece. However, their last album shows a bit of maturity and actually feels like it has their signature sound on it. The only thing I have to say about Greta, is the fact that they brought back this sound to the younger generation! Since Rock music has become, somewhat niche genre of late, this is a good sign, shows that music like this can still make an impression!
This was the first song they wrote. As you say, youthful. They were in high school when they did this. They had a garage and parents that had instruments in their house. Their parents had quite an extensive collection of old blues and rock.
I remember standing in a record store with my dad and there was a stand that have several cds loaded up for preview listening and this was one of them. Track 1 and I was totally in. I think the connection to Led Zeppelin is over wrought especially once they really started finding their identity as a band.
They don’t sound like this anymore. They grew up and are releasing music that sounds like themselves if that makes any sense. They are a great live band and are building an impressive catalogue of music. The Kizka brothers are the real deal.
You have me intrigued. I only know this song from them. The Beatles taught us that emulating their influences only works for a while, but you need to grow, mature, explore, and find your own sound shows a true artist. I will have to listen to GVF's latest. Thanks for the heads up.
@@avlisk Mozart's father had him keep his notebooks very well and thus we have a history of a composer from age 5 to his death, and it's comparable to the shortened version of that composing maturing we see in the Beatles, but that's human nature... we all grow up!
You are right! Good ear! The difference is the production. So, it's written and played as classic rock but produced with modern techniques and equipment, so the sound is slightly different. Listen to that guitar sound in that first lick. That's modern guitar sound. Listen to the drums. Much more modern sounding drum production.
It's also the vocals; definitely Led Zeppelin, but I hear some 90's (Lenny Kravitz) and 2000's Prog Rock (Maynard Keenan) in there, they definitely grew up on Rock
Oh yeah they were young here but i love that their songs are all great musically and the lead singer has a great voice. They are about the only modern rock band that i listen to.
Heat Above is my by far my favorite by Greta Van Fleet! Btw, just discovered you, been listening to people analyze songs/musicians for years, you've got such a natural and kind aura that just invites the audience to learn along with you. I feel myself becoming more knowledgeable just for watching your videos. Thank you.
This band has it all: real guitars, real drums, a great singer (although his voice is sort of... peculiar) and a real rock vibe! And one of the classic blues turnarounds which appears twice in this song. Pure rock with all the necessary elements and without any others. BTW, both their LPs are great. Long live Greta!
The brothers' dad is a musician so they probably didn't wear ear plugs too much. He raised the boys on a lot of the classic rock music you have been listening to but it's obvious not only from their recordings but their live shows that Led Zeppelin was a very heavy influence.
great band, and a little reminiscent of led Zeppelin but not as much as they say. Zepp has a darker and more dangerous British side even on the first album. Greta is much more youthful, as Amy said, adolescent, psychologically, in terms of vibration. Even Plant's voice has more drive/distortion and can be darker when he wants. Josh Kiszka sings high pitch too (but zillion rock singers do That), with a lighter disembodied Voice, the timbre is more reminiscent of Geddy Lee ( even the vibrato ). To me they sound more like Aerosmith, a rock based on blues, but without the "darkness" and British drama of Led Zepp
I discovered them first about 6 years ago, heard them on a radio station and since have watched a documentary on them. They immediately impressed me and as a Dutchman I could help but wonder about their odd band name. It is the first and last name of a girl or woman and it is unmistaken Dutch. You're right Amy, they are a present era band but their sound and compositions are "throwback", it is straight 60's and 70's style pure blues rock. You sensing that it is not old? Maybe they just sound fresh to you. Their play is tight, they sound convincing, very attention garnering and they just sound like good energy. And comparisons to Robert Plants voice are not to be helped but he sings making different stylistic choices. I should look closer into this band, their music. Thanks
Happy to see you look at a currently active band. Their cover of "Change is Gonna Come" is exceptional. Other bands with recent albums to look at are Jack White, Queens of the Stone Age, Lord Huron, Silversun Pickups (really encourage this band), Shins, and so many others.
Basic rock, very Led Zep, which for a young band is not a bad thing. I like the slide guitar, no Elmore James but not too shabby. Classic car songs of the 1950s and 60s, and pop songs cross genre were almost never more than 3 minutes, and there was a specific technical reason for that. Great channel! You made me notice new aspects of songs that I listened to for a lot of time, and that's precious. 😊 I am very curious to know what you think of the Beach Boys' "golden age" songs: Good Vibrations, and God Only Knows, to name a few. They are very interesting from the harmonic point of view, one of the best bands under this aspect. In my opinion, they were the actual rivals of the Beatles, since Rolling Stones are a completely different band, without strong musical connections with Beatles. Moreover, there would not exist Beatles' Sgt. Pepper's without Beach Boy's Pet Sounds, as McCartney himself admitted. Unfortunately, Beach Boys produced great music only around 1966-1967, since Brian Wilson's mental health did not permit a longer inspiration.
Another Great "newer" rock band that plays and writes music that is a blast from the past is The Heavy Heavy !! Check out "All my Dreams" or " Miles and Miles" Really have a cool old school vibe
Greta Van Fleet's first album is heavily Led Zeppelin-inspired. It's their second and third album where they start mixing in a little bit of Janis Joplin grit in their music.
Another recent band along the same vein, is Dirty Honey. Same kind of classic rock feel done by a younger band more recently. You should give “Rolling 7’s” or “When I’m Gone” a reaction I think you may have a similar feeling about this.
Thanks for tip, Dirty Honey is definitely old school rock! Check out The Heavy Heavy doing All my Dreams or Miles and Miles They also have an old school rock style.🎉🎉
A band, from the 90s, that did a great job at preserving the classic rock sound was The Black Crowes. Would be great to see you react to them. "Sting Me" is a great song for a first listen. Not a big hit for them but I think it represents them well.
Thanks Amy. All of my friends was listening to Led Zeppelin when i was young, so i could no avoid it. Thankfully, so Greta von Fleet is young version of that, i guess they maybe take another road in the future.
There were an awkward moment in the beginning where they were busy saying Led Zeppelin wasnt actually an influence on them at all, but moving past that Greta van Fleet, has moved on musically, and the music they are releasing lately does not sound like a Zeppelin cover band.
@Pawsk "There were an awkward moment in the beginning where they were busy saying Led Zeppelin wasnt actually an influence on them at all" Crazy, considering the singer was doing exactly the same posturing and hand gestures as Robert Plant, nevermind similar vocal patterns. He even wore the same pair of striped trousers that Plant had in '69.
Another Rock band started with 3 brothers is Chevelle. Their debut album is Point #1 which released in 1999. Chevelle is one of the most consistent Rock bands of the modern ear. When they release a new album, you know it'll be good.

They were 16-17 when they wrote it. Compare the perfectly composed but child like melodies of Mozart's K1-K10, and then even to K.30! Now they are 24-25 so as one can imagine they have matured!
i hope you will react to some more greta van fleet, they are by Far one of my fav bands ever, and their more recent works are so much ... more. some of my personal faves are The Archer, and also The Weight of Dreams.

This is usually the first song that people react to but is one of my least favorites because the others are even better. I would love it if you listened to Meeting the Master and Heat Above at least, if not Broken Bells, Age of Man, and Flower Power... too many 😅
Very talented band and singer with incredible range. I've tried to like them but his voice just rubs me the wrong way. Also yes, they are reminiscent of Zeppelin BUT without the magic that made 90% of their songs classics.
It's a big radio hit, about everyone likes the song, and their huge audiences will expect and be demanding to hear that song for entire career of the band. Consequently, it is a classic that will be played for the next 5 decades this band is around.
I would like to suggest one of these 2 Anime movies - very unique, and they both have a distinct sound style: Ghost in the Shell - dark, artificial, mysterious music. And that opening theme. Paprika - a very psychedelic bright thriller with the music have a little twist: it was computer generated. From the melody being written as midis on an Amiga, to the vocals being one of the first appearances of vocaloid.
Nice reaction! If you're intrigued by long associations turning into interesting musical offerings, you might look into Avenged Sevenfold, who got together as teenagers in the '90's and, not without losses along the way, are still an amazing metal/hard rock/progressive band.
Yes, the voice and the drums have the hallmarks of very talented youth imitating their heros. Not really a criticism, but I think age would bring more layers of experience to the voice and some subtle expressiveness and personal styling to the drums. It's impressive and entertaining, but not quite their own sound yet. The recording is very clean and clinical, not as warm and organic sounding as Zeppelin. That said, these boys clearly had potential.
thanks a head of time reading this comment :) hey Amy I'm not sure if this is your alley but there is a music clip that I think you can sink your teeth into called "Unicron's Medley" by Oscar winner composer name Vince Dicola, I would love to hear your analysis of it IF its in your field interest or expertise.
Ha.. That was really funny Amy.. The look on your face was exactly the same as mine when I first heard this song.. It was like my brain couldnt understand this sound coming from these kids because this song in particular is very obviously Zepplin influenced. At fist I like you I just didnt know what to make of it. Unfortunately the more I listened to them the more the singers voice actually does my head in, he often sounds like a big screaming baby to me. While there are similarities his voice doesnt have the depth of Robert Plant (but then who does :) )
Go back and listen to the first Zeppelin album again. Plant was only 19 when they recorded those songs, only a year or two older than Josh in this song. Robert Plant's voice in Led Zeppelin I doesn't have anywhere near the depth or range, or restraint for that matter, that he would display on later records.
This is the older Greta Van Fleet... you really need to listen to " Heat Above" It is where they are currently headed... their current sound has evolved Josh's voice . The song Heat Above , has been compared to a mix of Janis Joplin and Queen. It definitely shows Lead singer Josh's ability to be a vocal beast.
70 year old here, it's classic rock with better recording tech. Talent, not autotune or quantitization, and like Rush they sound as good or better live.
I think that, perhaps, the greatest accomplishment that GvF achieved is that when younger generations heard: “They sound like Led Zeppelin,” they thought: “Who is this Led Zeppelin they speak of?” and looked up LedZep.
Except Zeppelin never copied anyone. They took stuff but completely transformed and improved it into something very different. This is just copying. The riff is very similar to Zeppelin's The Rover, on top of the Plant like vocals.
Yes their older albums were rip off of Led Zeppelin and I think they did it on purpose to attract attention, but the new albums are incredibly detailed new homage to classic rock. Some songs I suggest you listen to Flower power album 1 / A change is gonna come (Sam Cook cover) album 1 Watching over album 2 Weight of dreams album 3 Meeting the master album 4 Other songs are also brilliant but I love these 4 absolutely .
This is the only new rock that I’ve been excited about in years. And I’ve been saying that for five years. Lol. I love these kids.
I wish I had heard this song when my father was still alive. Led Zeppelin was his favorite band, and I would have loved to see his reaction to this.

Think they try to reproduce classic sound with modern equipment. That makes it sound kind of weird... Think i can accustom to it. :)
That said, these boys clearly had potential.
thanks a head of time reading this comment :)
hey Amy I'm not sure if this is your alley but there is a music clip that I think you can sink your teeth into called "Unicron's Medley" by Oscar winner composer name Vince Dicola, I would love to hear your analysis of it IF its in your field interest or expertise.
There GVF !!!!! 2024’ !!!!
Please do No Doubt
Excellent band was never crazy about the singer but that's just my opinion as always though I enjoyed the video Amy.
Love this band and I’m not a big Zeppelin fan fan
Tom Waits.
Time. 😊
Perhaps Amy could do No One Knows by Queens of the Stone Age
I think that, perhaps, the greatest accomplishment that GvF achieved is that when younger generations heard: “They sound like Led Zeppelin,” they thought: “Who is this Led Zeppelin they speak of?” and looked up LedZep.
You have to sing along!
A suggestion for review, you might get a kick out of "Eskimo" by Damien Rice
It is like a modern GPT/AI program doing Led Zeppelin as requested, but actually exists in flesh and blood. Either way, i like it.
Could you please analyze Gwen Stefani's voice singing "What you waiting for?" song...
Thanks in advance.🙏🏻
Without the intro, would you still have thought it was too young to be classic rock (if didn't know the name of the band)?
Thieves stealing from thieves.
GVF influence of LZ
Except Zeppelin never copied anyone. They took stuff but completely transformed and improved it into something very different.
This is just copying. The riff is very similar to Zeppelin's The Rover, on top of the Plant like vocals.
Please react to VAN DER GRAAF GENERATOR's "Refugees or any other tune from theirs.
Yes their older albums were rip off of Led Zeppelin and I think they did it on purpose to attract attention, but the new albums are incredibly detailed new homage to classic rock.
Some songs I suggest you listen to
Flower power album 1 / A change is gonna come (Sam Cook cover) album 1
Watching over album 2
Weight of dreams album 3
Meeting the master album 4
Other songs are also brilliant but I love these 4 absolutely .
I came for the Zeppelin comments
Hard to be new or original in the Rock genre? They say imitation is the sincerest form of flattery though?
To me it feels like 197090s LOL
It's very bluesy
Not my cup of tea. But that's just me ! I do like ( FABRK, )BLACK LAKE
The singer sounds like 'white stripes'.
jack white? He sounds identical to robert plant to me lol
please please please react to Jeff Buckley's Lover, You Should've Come Over
When the haters say it is Zep tell me what the heck is wrong with this. Nothing is the answer.
Please react to Dogs by Pink Floyd if you could! :)
It's too fast and polished to be classic rock but it's still good😅
