Was waiting for 3rd part and review, glad you liked it. This was based on true story of Zubeida Begum( aka Vidya Rani married to King of Marwar, Hanwant Singh), who is mother of this film's writer Khalid Mohammed( a popular film critic in India). The ending is open to interpretation as it was based on what happened in real life. The best part in this movie is the story of a woman, who even a century ago, had the gumption to follow her heart despite society pulling her down and shaming her. The red veil which the movie begins and ends with, is symbolic of her free spirit.
The movie did not show that Zubeida had a 4 month old son (with the Maharaja of Jodhpur) when she died ! The first queen raised him as her son ! But when he was 29 years old, his beheaded body was found on the streets of Jodhpur (property dispute) !! Makes me think these kings and queens of yesteryears (all religions) have so much blood on their hands !!!
Oh that's tragic, actual suffering of her would b more severe than that shown in this movie,,so there is more chance of deliberate murder attempt of both of them
For Karisma, you should watch; 1. Fiza 2. Shakti: The Power 3. Biwi No. 1 4. Dil Toh Pagal Hai (rewatch since you forgot she was in the movie) 5. Raja Hindustani Also, she did have a relatively long career for her time (10-12 years) before she took a break after getting married. She was also one of the biggest and most popular stars of the 90s. Her best chemistry has been with Govinda and Salman. She has surprisingly only worked with SRK twice and neither times as a couple, which is surprising because of their star power in the 90s
👏 Glad you gave Karishma her due this time💐. She quit in her prime to get married and raise children though, not bc of age...She was the MOST successful actress of the 90s with 17 back to back hits and one of the 3 best dancers too, with SriDevi and Madhuri and IMO, better than MD with more magnetism and smooth presence...Despite her status and lineage, she experienced more hard times than any outsider bc her dad n uncles put a ban on her getting any substantial roles bc they wanted her to get frustrated and quit bc they did not want tbeir daughters to work...They couldn’t stop her bc she was living w her mom. She had to wait a long time to get the opportunities like this one to show her incredible talent.but she was stuck doing those comedies with great dancing with Govinda.
12:09 karisma was too beautiful for bollywood to cast her as anything but eye candy. 90's as it is was a period when actresses never had a substantial role
thank you for always putting artistry above viewership and numbers. I know you guys can probably do a watchalong with any superstar and get far more views but you always choose to highlight such movies too
"पिंजर" के बारे में तो बताते बताते हमारी उंगलियाँ थक कर पिंजर हो गयीं .... लेकिन इन दोनों को तो शाहरुख़ खान से ही फुर्सत नहीं मिलती |... जाने कैसे इनको यह फिल्म देखने का समय मिल गया |
You guys should react to '1947 Earth' (1998). It's a near-perfect movie (directed by Deepa Mehta) released around the same time as this movie and is based on events around the India-Pakistan partition. It has your nanbar Rahman's best soundtrack and score, imo (peak ARR) and also one of the best performances from Aamir Khan. It's a great candidate for a watch-along (runtime of 1hr 50m) but at the very least you should watch it and review it.
For Karishma....FIZA, RAJA HINDUSTANI but her performance in SHAKTI, THE POWER with Nana Pathekar and SRK was even better than Zubeida and her beauty was sensory overload.
Watch Bose: The Forgotten Hero by Shyam Benegal. Everyone keeps suggesting this or that, but I am surprised, none ever asks you to watch any movie or documentary about Netaji Bose. I swear, you will fall in love with that man's life story, I swear❤
This was a great recap and I loved it, however, It would be great if you do a watch-along for "IRUVAR". I am sure fans would love it and give some knowledge to those who have ignored this film for it is the real history of Tamilnadu politics and of course for those who don't know Mani Ratnam's real art of filmmaking. Since you have already reviewed it I assume that you know what this film means. The less-known genius should be known to all. Very few know its historical roots but not all. So please do so... for I'm hoping that you know what this movie is all about.
Thanks. I was waiting waiting for your Part 3/3 only to listen to your appreciation for the film and Karisma who was superfluous in this film! Shyam Benegal is indeed one of India’s most prolific Directors who lead the parallel cinema movement of the 70s and 80s. I couldn’t thank him enough for getting my two bestest leading ladies Rekha and Karisma together in such a beautiful film! And I did thank him personally once in a chance meeting! Here are my recommendations for your future viewing; For Rekha, watch Shyam Benegal directed Kalyug Period piece Utsav For Karisma, watch Fiza, great story and some really good deeth scene by her! With Jaya Bachchan Shakti, it is a deliberate over the top treatment being a rural setting in the commercial space and the story’s deep rooted requirement but Karisma as a Mother spurned is a class act. SRK and Aishwarya have an item dance in the movie!
Please watch the Elements Trilogy by Deepa Mehta. Fire (1996) Earth (1998) Water (2005) Each one is a beautiful, thought-provoking and different movie!
🌹Amongst her many incredible songs, Karishma did 2 mesmerizing ones that no other actress has done before or since. They should not be missed. AANKG. DIKHAUNGI.... breakdancing cabaret ❤️👏 and DEWAANI DEWAANI w Akshay, ❤️👏 dancing barefoot on broken glass in a fit of jealous rage, this was done only 1 other time in the 60s.
This is it with Karishma. She has a terrible filmography. This was her peak. Other than this there are only a handful of her movies worth watching - Fiza with Hrithik, Biwi No. 1 and Raja Hindustani with Aamir.
You've gotta watch Qala. In an industry where psychological thrillers are rare , it is a masterpiece in filmmaking . Also Bulbul ,Ugly , laila majnu, I am Kalam
Please react to 1986 tamil movie Mella thiranthathu kathavu starring Mohan, Amala, Radha Music: MSV and Ilayaraja Direction: R Sundararajan Production: AVM
Her movie first to watch sakti - the power(sharukh and ash guest role),other heroine oriented roles done by urmila ek haseena dhee, pyar tune kya kiya, pinjar her best ans she is also a great dancer kambaq ishque song,
Zubeidaa begun was the real queen of King of Jodhpur. She had a son too with the maharaja who was raised by Rekha’s character but recently found beheaded on the streets of the city..Its said that her ghost still haunts the palace and many rooms are locked up coz they are haunted..
You should also watch the sequel of this movie which is actually a prequel named "Mammo". Mammo is absolutely a gem of Hindi film industry. Please watch it.

Just watched the Samdish Bhatia interview with Shyam Benegal. It seems Gurudutt was his cousin!!!

Best choices.
None of these movies Rick and Korbin are gonna enjoy except Fiza (relatively better)
You need to check out Karishma's comedic timing in something like 'Hero No. 1'. Her pairing with Govinda was iconic in the 90s. 🧡
👏 Glad you gave Karishma her due this time💐.

Manoj and Urmila made me cry throughout
Fiza is a good one for Karisma and my personal favorite Shyam Benegal movie is Welcome To Sajjanpur . Karisma and Rekha are both beautiful women.
My favourite Benegal movie is also Welcome to Sajjanpur!

Mammo, by the same director, and much of the same cast, and still autobiographical of Khalid Mohammed like this one.
For Karishma....FIZA, RAJA HINDUSTANI but her performance in SHAKTI, THE POWER with Nana Pathekar and SRK was even better than Zubeida and her beauty was sensory overload.
Karishma was one of the biggest superstars in the late 90s and early 2000s but Bollywood forgot her since. My first love.
Watch Bose: The Forgotten Hero by Shyam Benegal.
Everyone keeps suggesting this or that, but I am surprised, none ever asks you to watch any movie or documentary about Netaji Bose.
I swear, you will fall in love with that man's life story, I swear❤

You should Watch "Parineeta" if you liked Shyam Benegal's work
Karisma is the most jarring.
bad actress that was hugely successful.
Shut up
She was like most other successful 90s actresses (obviously not including Tabu) - not a bad actress but nothing great or versatile about her.
