- After the video I posted about my KTM790 set up this was a common question. So here you go. If you want the best information I have, professionally filmed go to vimeo.com/ondemand/saynotoslow
I had a tube puncture, front, in the woods and of course I didn’t have a wrench to remove the front wheel. I laid the bike on its side removed the tube from the rim, still on the bike. Repaired the tube, punch flat, and continued on our way. Haha had a couple pieces of leafs between the tire and rim but finished off the day.
There is always a way.. lol
Thank you Sir.
Nice one!
Yes... Never give up 👍
3:30 The bike when I begin.
7:02 The bike seconds later..
Having a centre stand just seems the better option at the end of the day.Respect.
Nah centre stands not practical @ to this level of demonstration by pros sorry
Yeah even for a rider of my very modest level of skill and average velocity the center stand on my old F800gs did a lot of floppity flop flopping and banging around. I wouldn't want one on my new bike.
@@markverge807
Zip ties have been invented you know, you can tie your center stand when going of road.
Then cut it off and do it all over again, it costs nothing.
Nah center stands are for old farts with giant tourers 😂
@@OlaCurtius have you started using "On Line" banking yet?
Thanks mate. Haven’t seen the rope method before. Seems like a great idea and another use for the tow rope we all carry any way.
Plus, I’m getting too old and tired to hold the bike up with one hand and change the tire with the other lately.
Chris, anybody that dares to call you an idiot needs to watch you ride the 1190 Adventure bike (or to be fair, any bike) off road. Those videos clarify that idiots are proper cool 😎 😆👍
Regarding a flat, I'd just chuck it on its side. My bikes aren't worth much and they spend a lot of time on their sides anyway 😂
Hey Chris, would love to see a vid of you showing off your bikes and some stories of when ya got them and what you have done with them. Cheers!
Yeah cool, I think I'll do that.
Chris birch,Chris matz here please come to my house and play ADVMX
Nice one! A bag of tricks os good👍🤠. Under the seat at the rear end two straps with "stretch/lock" mechsnism will fit nicely. Keep it up Chris 💪👌
Great share Chris. You've probably done it plenty of times but as a new comer from road to trails Its very helpful...Have a DRZ
On my DRZ400 I can usually find a small branch to chock the swingarm as they’re not heavy bikes. Push the bike onto the sidestand as Chris did, and put a branch under the swingarm on the opposite side. Works a treat. In Australia there’s vast areas without trees, and if I’m adventure riding in more remote areas I carry a small steel emergency stand that performs the same function. They’re not big or heavy, most are telescoping and easily fit in my Kriega offroad side bags the same as shown on Chris’s bike. They’re around AUD30.
Just got a bike a few months ago, my first! The 660xtz.
Adding weight and incurring the expense of a center stand wasn't appealing. This tutorial was so helpful and practical Chris!
To the folks commenting on alternative ways to do this: this is Chris Birch! If the man says "Drop your bike on the ground!" you drop your bike on the ground! Now, let me go to my garage and practice getting my Super Duke R off the ground. Wish me luck!
Super duke R? Maybe put a mattress down first.
Thanks for these tips. Going to add some rope to my kit. One I would add is loosen axle nuts prior to tieing off with rope .
I was just contemplating removing my center stand as well, great video as always! Love your work!
you can tie off the other side as well so you don't push the bike over the limit. Thanks for this advice, I can take one more heavy tool out of my kit!
I also enter my garage only in special boots. This make me like him on the trails🤣
Good to see a 950A in your shed! 👍
Hey that’s me, don’t have any friends! This was super helpful, thanks!
Super, super helpful Chris! Thank you!
Creative. We usually look for a big rock or downed log to rest the bash plate on, or lean it over on the side stand with a stick instead of pulling with a rope. Failing those, your plan B. haha
Great video. I would suggest learning the trucker's hitch knot for that application. Easy to tie and adjust for length. Thanks for posting.
Nice one Chris, I have never seen the rope method before. Luckily i have have never had to remove a wheel while out and about but i carry an enduro star jack stand in my tool roll. I can lift either the front or the back of my Dr650 and remove the wheels.
Thanks for this, I’ll start carrying a rope in my tool kit from now on! A round turn and two half hitches would be the perfect knot for this job. The knot itself is easier to remember than the name.
To stabilize the motorcycle for the rear tire, you could additionally tension another rope on the right side of the steering head at the same angle.
Absolutely!
Thank you Chris!! Never thought of the rope trick. You are a smart man!!
This is incredible, now I really don’t have to mount the central stand! Thanks a lot, Chris! 🙏😷
Nice tip for the rope. I have done it similarly so far, but instead of rope, I have tried to find a stick of wood or rock and use it in the other side to balance it out.
Yep, a well placed stick is a good one. I've knocked it over a few times being clumsy. I think the rope is a safer option if available.
Nice, I'll have to try that one next time I have a flat on my XR650L. It's a pig. Struggled last time wrestling it over a log.
On my 690 I replaced the cotter pin on the right side foot peg with a hitch pin. get a flat, pull pin and flip foot peg. Now it won't fold up and that is my support point for an appropriately sized stick. Works wonders for the rear tire and is super stable. Front tire I just support off the bend in the front exhaust pipe with a stick. I should mention I don't do any thing too wild that I am concerned about knocking the pin out.
Solid strategy Chris.
I seen you apply sleeping boulders to Jack big twins up too Ha!
Brilliant! I wanted to change my front tire on my AT and only have a side stand. This will def be something I give a try! Thanks for the pro-tip.
It's nice to see that you are actually human. Your knot tying cracked me up! hanks for the laughs!
Awesome. Thanks Chris. I use a trail stand for the back but this will be my go-to for the front. Looking forward to seeing you back out on the trails 🤙
I like that bike. I am really pleased with it.
When I had a flat once, I flipped the bike upside the down. Then made sure the handlebars rest on something soft to minimize the scratching.
Finally unlock the quick release and remove the tubes without tire levers. :D
Wow, that's great idea, also rope tecniuq is great
Thanks for the great video!
Great video. Only issue I see is the changed balance point when the wheel is removed. If its close to balance wheel-on, it'll fall the minute you decouple the wheel.
I have used this method a few times now, the change in weight has never caused an issue with the balance point. The only issue has bee n the side stand skidding finding the balance point but once set has never moved.
i love this , mad i never thought of myself! that being said it will not work in a barren landscape ( dunes , atacama ) im going to try it , but have my hatchet prop method in case i cant find / create an anchor
Thanks a lot Chris !!
Just carry an enduro star trail stand, I've used one for years, very easy to use. A pox on centre stands.
great buddy , actually i was looking for the name of this stand.
I respectfully disagree. I try and find ways to carry the least amount of gear possible. The less my bike is loaded down the more I enjoy my riding. I've seen these trail stands before, they are not for me.
Chris Birch - Off Road Coach ...depends on where you ride and for how long. I like your method, but it won’t always be possible. If Im riding in wooded areas I’ve always been able to find a branch. If I’m riding in Australia’s more arid areas on weeks long trips I sometimes take my little stand, it’s only 250mm long and weighs 300 grams. That’s probably only 150 grams more than a rope that I wouldn’t find a large enough rock to tether to, and saltbush shrubs won’t take the weight. I’m all for packing light too, sometimes I just lay the bike down, but you’re talking about 200 grams max difference from your setup, and we don’t all live in countries as well forested as NZ, and little iron marbles in the outback won’t tether either. In many scenarios a light telescope stand is a better option. I always have a webbed strap for pulling, but I wouldn’t always have a tethering point. I always ride solo, unsupported, even on my months long return trip from Germany to Vladivostok (& similar) ...where are you going, and for how long, always the key for me.
@@ronanrogers4127 poor you
Very clever (and out of the box thinking) man. Love it! Adding rope to my tool kit :)
Perfect Chris, Thank you for that!
Just glad I have a centre stand much easier for chain maintenance as well but I do a lot more road than dirt
Practical usefull awesome!!
Cool. That's a new one for me. Thanks Chris!
Thank you Chris for the tip ;-) Perfect
Well done.
Thank you for all this info and show how to 👍👍👍👍
Any chance of a walk through the shop and tools plus bikes you have.
I like fact you still have the 950 adv parked up
Thanks Chris, I'll bring along some ropes besides cables tie.
Thanks, mate!
😂😂 if you can’t tie knots tie lots of knots, cheers Chris
Chris, How bout a tip on how to pickup the big bikes when you drop it on its side downhill in the mud with no trees to help?
great idea
Have you seen the Enduro Trail Stand Chris? Just picked one up from US and works well in case you can't do spiderman. Your vid series is awesome too btw, cheers.
You always.. Have good ideas 🤗🤗🙏
Thanks a lot 🙏
well done Mr Birch
Maybe one day you can buy another KTM. Great video!
I've always laid the bike down. Well, actually just not picked it up. Cause the tyre's gone flat and I don't realise until I crash.
Legend
cool video helpful thanks
4:40. Kids grown up and gone...miss those interruptions! Good "tip".
Yeah I love it when she comes up to visit. I didn't want to edit that out. In another year or two I think we will be doing a lot of two up riding together.
break'n in those new boots
Cool 👍🏼
Is that a center stand on the 990 in the background mate 🤔?
I recommend stans no tubes tire sealant. Unless you bend a rim then it will get you out everytime. And if you bend a rim then your screwed anyhow. Unmounting a wheel is only necessary if your changing a tire and i don't know anyone who carries spare tires on there back lmfao
Haha try doing that outside Quetta, Pakistan with 25 kids swarming around the bike. I carried a cheapo collapsible walking stick that worked out well for front or rear tyre repairs, although still pretty precarious
I'll remember that next time I'm in Pakistan...
Thanks Chris!!
Thanks I will now bring a rope with me..
Check out my video on Vimeo on demand for a great trick with the rope.
Surely you must of tried a mousse out of curiosity....lyndon poskitt uses them in the front well lubed with no issues 6000miles Michelin desert mousse....
I wish some one would try a set... and report
Lewis 1290r
I run mousses in races like Hellas Rally. They are too soft for big twins. I run a 90/100 rally mousse in a 90/90 tire for a better feel and just put up with the rear being a bit too soft. That's on narrower rims too.
Stans tire sealant works fine for MTBs and road bikes. Would it work on the 790 Adventure, also? Somebody tried so far?
@@espero7757 Problem with a tire sealant is if you get a pinch flat that the sealant can't handle it's impossible to patch the tube as the glue wont stick. Ask me how I know ...
Hi Chris, thanks for the idea. What brand/model are the seat bags please ?
Chris - was wondering if you are running tubes in those tires? Had a sidewall cut on a 790 and I am not super keen on tubeless tires offroad.
Great Tips
Hello Chris; question for you: your are a tall guy so you must be above 80-85 kilos plus gear; knowing that stock suspensions are for an average 75-80 kgs. So, have your motorcycles’ suspensions have been adjusted or upgraded for your weight and style of riding? Besides that your bikes look to be pretty much stock. Cheers
After the video I have installed a SW Mototech centerstand in my KTM 790 Adv. ;-)
I am really clumsy, so your method is very dangerous for me.
that was good .
You gotta look into a trail stand. Way easier and safer. Don't need a tree or something else to tie to. Super small and lightweight.
Just say no to centerstands!
So, am I also carrying a replacement front and rear wheel, or just a patch kit and air compressor? lol
i can't open the knot, stuck in the woods ... HELP ! :-D
I am a newbie, so do you ride with tire spoons and extra tubes? Also, what type of lift do you recommend for doing maintenance on the 790 Adv R?
Can you give me the link for the tail bag on your bike
Thanks for the video! Any truth to the "weak side stand" issue with KTM? Dealer told me to be careful weighting the side stand on my 1090 due to a weak mounting point.
Not that I have witnessed. I do cringe a little when people use them to spin a fully loaded bike around in the car park though. Its important to check the mounting bolts every now and then as they can come loose. 790's included.
Hey Chris, I have a 1090 that has the kick stand mounted direct to the motor, would you feel comfortable doing the same method where you have pivot on the side stand? Or would you recommend just laying it down. Thanks for the videos to keep us semi-sane
Yeah I did this all the time with the 1090 and never had any issues.
smart, thx!
I am a noob & my question is Sir can we convert those rims to tubeless one's?
No you can't, we'll I suppose you could use the tubliss system but it's not something I would do.
Bit ashamed how untidy my garage is
This is a shop, not a garage
What are the side bags that are shown on that bike?
They are made by Kriega
Thank's Chris.
Can you share the Name of Bags on your KTM?
Hi from Berlin(DE)
Kriega. www.kriega.com
Go ask a truck driver to show you. ''part " from that... you've got it covered.
My thoughts too, just use a truckies hitch and just pull it up to position. Not a bad solution tree and anchor point dependent though.
Is the side stand really strong enough to do that? I have heard ktm side stands are not that strong, and because of that it is not even recommended to go on the bike by walking on the left foot stand
I wouldn't try this with the aluminum dirt bike stands. The stands on the 690 and up are pretty substantial. I turn my 690 on the side stand all the time.
what if you're on the desert ;)
if you are not Chris Birch :) can be dangerous
Maybe Link.
At least, some one say it!
How bout leaning it to a wall?
Sure that would work. Its normally quite hard to find a wall in the forests and mountains?
I always felt the same way about a center stand, but a lot of guys would give me flack for it... Here's another option using a Trail Stand_TS3. www.endurostar.com... not sure if you see a disadvantage to that besides carrying one more thing? Cheers
Don’t worry about it, we don’t watch your videos too learn how to tie knots lol
ill just put a rock under the center...
You won't have that sidestand for long...
Ok, the lockdown is going to prevent the virus from spreading LOCALLY. What will happen when people are going to need to travel internationally?
Not really the place for this question...I think they will be basic health control (temperature for example) in every airport.
Yea not the place.
Quarantine.
