- On this project we are working on a new dock with double boathouse under one roof two boatlifts. All the decking will be gray Thru-flow Synthetic decking. All the pilings on this project are piling wrap to prevent bore worm infestation and they are all driven down with a vibratory hammer all dock pilings or 6 inch 20 feet long driven into the soil 9 to 10 feet

People don't understand the work and time it takes to do the work, hence the impatient calls.
That's some accurate work you do driving those pilings. Good job!
Very true
Hey Dale, I want to say thank you for all the informative content you’ve been putting out for years. Great inspiration for us young dock builders.
Always great things stuff going on here ! Thumbs up ! Chief howling was awesome !!
That’s that’s pretty awesome I have three German Shepherd‘s and whenever they hear a siren they all are howling at the same time they do the same thing when they hear coyotes at night time. I good to hear from you as always.
Always wondered how this was done! Thanks for the great footage!
Thanks for watching!
Keep up the great work!!
Wish I had you close by so I could get my pier pilings straightened up from Nicks hurricane in Baytown Texas area
You guys do awesome work, I do too have a marine construction company down in south Texas and love your rig
Thanks Eugenio I would love to see some of your work send me your information. I get asked all the time from people in different areas who I could recommend.
@@DaleWHickman The company name is Gene Diaz and son, we have some pictures on Facebook but haven't updated them in a few years. I see that you guys work with everlast seawalls, I been working with them for years you can probably get some references from them but again awesome work
@@eugeniodiaz3018 Nice looking work 👍
@@DaleWHickman Thank you Sir we are a small company, maeby some day I'll be as big as you guys lol keep up the good work Sir God bless
@@eugeniodiaz3018 Thank you sir I’ll receive those blessings for sure likewise to you. Large is not always better a lot more experience being small was quite enjoyable at the time..
I use to do this job . It was pretty fun
At 2:55, interesting video artifacts, looks like the end effector and jet ski were moving though each other
“Pretty deep isn’t it?” Right after he messes up and the other guy has to jump in then you hear “must be high tide!” I’m dying 🤣 to funny man you guys have good equipment at my job we drive post with air pressure hammers we set on top of the poles with a crane off a pontoon. Smaller scale operation but gotta get in the water with the gators and sharks every day 😂
If you double wrap the choker around the bundle of piles you'll get a better bite. Great video, thanks
Good tip!
Good work
Thank you Gary and for watching
Do you think pushing with a pontoon is better than pushing with a 20’-24’ Carolina skiff side console?
i would love to see more videos from a professional like yourself as im thinking of starting a business doing tasks just like this. how much did your barge and equipment cost?
Thank you for watching your comment. I appreciate that we don’t like sharing numbers on the Internet as to given additional information to local competition. 😃
Like the videos
Thanks for the video it's awesome I always wondered what if they had to take them out is there some sort of removal tool or they just drill it out?
Thanks for your comment, we water jet the poles up or use a vibration hammer
I did this in flordia. We jet out holes and set 25 and 35ft poles by crane. We used a air powered crane hammer too, it sucked.
A excavator makes it so much easier. They need one bad. I mean we set 6 poles a day it's slow
Yeah it’s hard doing it without equipment my dad did not believe in equipment and then I worked with him in the 80s the biggest pole Ir stood up by hand was 8”x 35 with a lot of scaffling and blocks and tackles
Nice Videos! Is the piece of equipment at the end of your excavator boom a vibratory plate compactor?
Thanks for your comment Eric and watching my videos. Yes it is.
Piling wrap is not at the same height, the piling wrap nails should be within 3" not 6", the pilings are leaning in on the left for sure, use spreaders in the future to make sure you dont lose your load. Also the smaller end of the piling should go down (toe end) for better grip strength for possible sinckage.
Great videos. What type of license do you have ?
Thanks for your comment! I have a specially Marine contractors.
Hey Dale on any of your cuts of the treated wood, do you treat the cut end, if so what do you use?
Good question Paul yes we do if it’s close to the salt water we retreat the cut timber with copper toxins we try to never really cut that end of the board off.
I sure wish I could contact you build mine in North Carolina good job
I’m in South Carolina if you’d like a quote
Nice video, great work !! Any tips or tricks to get old 3/4 timber bolts out of the pilings? Man they are in there!!, been beating on them with a sledge and even resorted to using a bosch demo hammer. Also, what kind of tools do you guys use near the waterline? Have to replace some cross members and supports along with old timber bolts, using electric tools standing in saltwater is a bit sketchy 😂😂.
Thanks for watching my channel. I have had some issue getting bolt out and I had to resort to a large air compressed driver, which does take some time. We don’t use any electrical tools around the water that is pretty dangerous. My guys like the cobalt from Lowe’s and the Dewalt battery power tools.
@@DaleWHickman thanks for the reply
Dale one other question, rough estimate what would you charge to drive 8- 6" pilings in on a typical job ?
Hey Paul depends on soil conditions it could run anywhere between $10-$15 per foot
They need a floating level
What size is your barge ?
Who could write a nasty review ? Screw them . This is my first time checking out your channel , as a carpenter 30 + years I love watching things be built. Environment friendly , as a hunter , fisherman. Wildlife is my passion... Great video. Do you sell T- shirts.😮 Just asking..
Thank you so much for watching my channel and your comment! I haven’t thought about the T-shirt thing yet, but that might be a great idea 💡 you get all types of comments on RUclips. I take it like water off the ducks back as my dad used to say.
Love the videos! I'm looking to install a small shoreline dock on a little lake in Arkansas. It's got very rocky soil. No way for big equipment to get in. Other than hand digging 4 foot deep piling holes, what would alternative options be?
Thanks!
Thanks for watching we appreciate that! Can you get a small two or 3 inch pump back there to help jet the hole out a little deeper to get the Piling in if you could get at least 6 foot it probably be a lot better. Good luck with your project.
@DaleWHickman you're awfully kind to respond, I appreciate that! You mentioned a two or three inch pump. Not real familiar with this equipment is that the size of the hose? And if I can rent one will it cut through rocky soil I was going to put a section of tinhorn in the water close to the shore and evacuate the water out to begin work. Thanks Dale!
I’ve seen it in a couple different videos of yours, what/ how do you use those 2x ? Is that how you set up your string line ?
Thanks for watching my videos but no, we actually run a string line very tight to set our poles and then install the two by eights
👍👍
Care to share how you’re rigging poles? Looks like a loop on your chain by chance?
That’s it I use a grade 8 bolt in the loop be careful though those chains can really tear your pilings up when pulling them back up 👍
Does bro have a shark repellent
Good job but better to wrap after driving , we pound them till the dont go down
Thanks for your comment Ivan and watching! I don’t think I could get pilings long enough for here they keep going in the sand and mud.
Side friction has quite a bit of holding power. 💪
Where did you get your lil barge the excavator sits on? How much are they?
We had them made in Panama City in the roughly about 90,000 . I’m sure with everything going on now they’re even more expensive
Your wife is one lucky lady ;)
Trust me, I am the lucky one
❤️✔️
Why the rocks in front of sheeting,
Big waves ?
Would the sheeting be enough on a lake or canal.?
Vertical sea walls are actually illegal in Florida. With the installation of lime stone riprap in front of the wall this makes the wall permitable. Lime stone helps break up wave action and any sand that might be traveling with that wave is distributed amongst the riprap which could in some places build up beaches. The only place we don’t have to install the riprap is in canals it is not really necessary in these areas if the wall is built properly you would not need it in the lake either.
Thanks for watching 👍

Thanks for quick response, you guys are damn good !
Great work! What kind of excavator are you using?
Thanks for your comment and question which typically use the 308 cats
@@DaleWHickman thanks for the reply! That’s a huge excavator! What’s the smallest you could get by with? Would rather use a plate compactor vs jetting sheets by hand with pump.
@@berniemac8413 actually a 50 John Deere is the first one to use and it works just fine. I’ve got a plate compactor on it also and I like the use of both jetting and driving if I can drive without jetting I’m all about that cause I’m a lot quicker getting the lined up. Lots of practice.
@@DaleWHickman haha yea I bet it takes a lot of practice! Do you ever find that driving them with the machine gets the installed sheets out of alignment/plumb? Or does that not happen due to the interlocking ends.
When putting the wraps on how do you know where to put them or do you not drive until You hit resistance?
No resistance here I could drive the pilings all the way down we drive to a bearing load typically about 10 feet does it in the sandy conditions
@@DaleWHickman I guess we do have more of a rock shelf up here than you probably do.
@@zachwiseman6297 The only rock that we hit is the rock that came from Birmingham Alabama that we put in along the shoreline 😂
@@DaleWHickman that is crazy to me because we have to wait at most is an hour and a half to get our rock from the query. How long does it take to get your rock to you?
@@zachwiseman6297 😳 5-6 hrs

Lmao level on a piling yall funny ,never seen a straight piling
I've worked on marine construction for 5 years and i would like to start my own business but i don't know how to start with
Thanks for watching my video and your comment. One thing you’re going to start with if you do is a lot of long hours trust me. When meeting with your customers tell them what you were going to do and do what you say you’re going to do and even do a better job. Trust me that will spread like wildfire to other customers. You don’t need all the heavy equipment at first it will be a lot of manual labor but you will build up to it if you do what you say you’re going to do for the customers.
How deep you going in ground?
8-10’ 😃
I would’ve thought that you put the skinny side down.
Thanks for your comment. A lot of people or contractors do that to make you think you’re getting a larger Piling. If you put the skinny side in the ground, the first storm surge will pull that right out of the ground you don’t have a bigger circumference at the bottom to give you a drag
What’s it typically cost to replace a piling. I have one I need replaced.
Thanks for your question. I’m watching my channel. There’s a whole Lotta factors to go into replacing a Piling as far as accessibility water, depth, soil, conditions, and size of Piling. Typically most poles go for about $20-$25 a foot labor to install.
What kind of price on this boat house ? I need one
Thanks for your comment. If you live in this area, please feel free to give us a call at the office will be happy to see the size you are looking up and give you a rough estimate.
The Mutt & Jeff show.
😂
Where are you guys located
Thanks for checking out my page Steve, we are located in Gulfbreeze Florida that is in the south west corner of Florida by Alabama
and try to work within 50 miles.
Dude been driving pile for 13 Years Never have I used a level to plumb a pile. Piles tapper are normally aren't straight .
13 years wow that’s a long time. Good job I hate how long it takes for the guys to let the plum-bob settle. I’d like to get a quick level. We compensate for the tape while we’re leveling checking both sides. On the inside of the seawalls I do like for the Pilings to be level so that both wailers run plumb to each other so my wall does an angle which I know make Pilings leans just a bit. 👍
I need a barge and a crane and someone who knows how to use it 😭😭😭 I have so many pylons to sink in the swamp
Let me know if you find that person and send him my way 😆
why drive them upside down?
Thanks for watching. Depends on what you’re calling upside down. The butt end or the largest end of the Piling should be installed in the water on docks. This makes it harder for the Piling to be pulled out with a bigger end in the ground during a storm search. If you put the smaller end in once you break that suction with the storm surge uplift, it’s easy for that pole to come out. Now building a house on Piling’s, you want to put the skinny end down because it is loadbearing of the house.
@@DaleWHickman that makes sense if you're in the north where water freezes and i do agree with the storm surge also i am Chris flint i owned flint marine construction out of Virginia beach i ran 12 crews for 20 years i sold in 2017 and moved to asia enjoyed watching thanks we were the largest marine contractor on east coast where are you what area?
