The Meaning of the Sign of the Cross

- Catholics begin each prayer with the Sign of the Cross, but what does this act mean?
How to Make the Sign of the Cross
Start with your right hand on your forehead and move it to your heart or stomach. Then tap your left shoulder and move your hand to your right shoulder.
While tracing the cross, we pray:
Forehead: "In the name of the Father"
Heart: "and of the Son"
Shoulders Left to Right: "and the Holy Spirit"
"Amen."
The Meaning of the Sign of the Cross
The Sign of the Cross is a prayer all to itself. It is used as a blessing. It is, in fact, a sacramental that prepares us for grace in the sacraments and in our prayers.
The meaning of the Sign of the Cross expresses the two most important mysteries of the Christian faith:
1. Jesus Christ suffered and died for us.
We trace the cross on our bodies to remember Jesus Christ's death on the cross. We also remember how Jesus called all Christians to "take up your cross daily and follow me." This cross was first given to us in our Baptisms when the cross was traced on our foreheads as a sign that we have died and risen with Jesus Christ.
2. The Holy Trinity
While we trace the cross with our hands, we say "In the name of the Father and the of Son and of the Holy Spirit."
God is a Trinity of three Persons. God is three in one. When Jesus sent out his Apostles at the end of the Gospel of Matthew, he told them to baptize "in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit" (Mt 18:19). We invoke the name of the Triune God when we pray.
The Origin of the Sign of the Cross
The earliest version of this practice appeared as the tracing of the cross on one's forehead much like we continue to do during the liturgy before listening to the Gospel reading. This was done during Baptisms and the Church Fathers indicate that it was a practice that has been passed down from the Apostles.

i signed the cross everything i do,anywhere, like going home, coming home, eat, before after sleep,in the bus,in work etc,its my every very very short prayer,so that i will think God every minute of life,
Sheeeesh
👍
Which god are you thinking? Jesus?
oh ok, so if someone does the cross at you they aren’t trying to be mean they’re probably just praying? i’m not catholic but i am of Christ so i just am baffled by the motion bc i just pray my steps are ordered rightly and all the works of my hands and mouth and heart and soul please the Lord and go about my life. i don’t know how to incorporate gestures to improve my faith, it seems humorous to me, like throwing up gang signs, but it’s for the trinity gang haha
Lord guide me always to do the sign of the Cross in all my prayers ,at the meals etc. Thanx for reminding us about our Catholic Doctrine.
remember God is good
God is loveee and love never fails
Amen
Jesus means God is Salvation. God the Father, God the Son Holy Jesus Christ and God the Holy Spirit are one.
Thank you! God Bless.
Thank You so much 🙏
Blow more candles in 🕯️ Holy Spirit
in the Name of the Father the son and the holy Spirit Amen
when i went into the store the other day, to get a candle, i asked the employee “what is his favorite color candle” and he said “always pick Jesus” or smthn like that, which duh, but i was simply asking his simple personal preferences to be community minded and kind. and he did the sign of the cross at me, and kind of backed up. but i am a believer so i don’t understand why he did it at me, bc i don’t hang around a lotta people who do it. so he just double triple baptized me? ig that’s nice, gotta be like the 10th time in my life haha, blessed i guess?
Ya Allah all these years Father heart ❤heart his heart ♥️
Never mix law with grace or you will have neither.
There is no evidence, so far as I know, about how the sign of the cross started, but but is certainly from the early Church. My own theory is that a surreptitious sign of the cross was a sign by which Christians knew each other in the times of persecution by the Romans. Nowadays, it is an overt sign to the world, and a reminder to oneself, that the cross was the gibbet on which our blessed Lord saved us.
I have a symbol cross on my index finger i dont know jesus what indicate me
The only problem with doing it that was is the cross is upside down. I now do it from the top off my chest to the stomach and then across my shoulders.
Now I know😳😳😳
I was taught to say Holy Ghost not Holy Spirit. Is that ok?
It is my understanding that the Holy Ghost and the Holy Spirit are the same, so I would say, yes.
Eye of Jesus right
Thank you sir!
Been becoming more religious so videos like this really help!
Don’t worry about being religious. Religion is a man made way to God. Just put Jesus first in all things and build your relationship with Him and faith in Him, and you will be ok. Always remember to ask for forgiveness. Jesus wants your love. He doesn’t care about rituals.
You n the church
I understand the DEEP spiritual message and the literal CROSS's Sign/Symbol/Mark meaning... The Crucifixion was used by the Roman Empire as their Capital Punishment (Painful and Humiliating Slow Death) for anyone who committed a crime or rebellion against the Roman Empire...
However, Christ Jesus had used and turned this CRUELITY (INHUMANE) method of punishment of the literal CROSS into a SIGN/MARK/SYMBOL of CHRISTIANITY to remind us all that whoever believes in the one who had Sacrificed Himself (Christ Jesus) to Die on the Cross for the REMISSION of the SIN of Mankind shall be eternally SAVED...
Before the Literal CROSS was the "Sign/Symbol of CRUELTY and DEATH" of the People... but after Christ's Death on the Cross, Resurrection, and Ascension to Heaven... Christ Jesus used and turned the Literal CROSS into the "Sign/Symbol/Mark of LOVE and Eternal LIFE (Resurrection)" of the People...
Just like the POLE with the bronze replica/statue of a snake, created by Prophet Moses in the wilderness, whoever looks/sees the POLE will not DIE from the bites of the Snake... (ref. Numbers 21:8-9)... that is the same analogy with the SpIritual and Literal CROSS with the Replica/Statue of Christ Jesus hanging on the Cross, whoever accepted and believed in Christ Jesus by the Grace of God through FAITH will never DIE but will have Eternal Life with God in Paradise (3rd Heaven)...
In conclusion, people will KNOW the followers of Christ called CHRISTIANS (with Born again Spirit) by knowing them through their "Spiritual and Literal Sign/Symbol/Mark of the CROSS of Christ" from their Literal Forehead (thoughts/minds) and their Right Hand (physical work/deed/act of love), as well as from their Spiritual Heart and Soul (total humility and submission/obedience) ...
Glory, Praise, and Thanks be to God in Christ Jesus' name...Amen and Amen...
I don't get it can anyone tell me pls?
Jesus Christ died on the cross, rose again and out of pure love and forgiveness, he got rid/frogave us all of our sins. Believing in God, Jesus Christ and the Holy Spirit is very important, and repent from your sins. He loves you and will forgive you. The cross is also used to remind us of the trinity (Father, Son, Holy Spirit). I’m reformed, so it’s not so typical for us to make the sign, but the most important thing is to believe and love Jesus Christ, God and the Holy Spirit. Hope this helped :)
sorry but, just curious, how would you properly use it, like when you do this what is the point?
To p the cross is God the Father the creator of Jesus. Bottom of cross is the Son( Jesus) died in flesh is the crucifixion. Sides of the cross ➕ Jesus Resurrection the rising of Jesus Holy Spirit
You reference the Holy trinity , however you point to the head for Father, to the chest for Son to the Left shoulder for Holy Spirit. Why do you then move your hand to the Right shoulder as if the Holy spirit is Split to represent 2 directions? wouldn't it be accurate to represent the trinity in triangular symbolism than with a 4 directional pointed cross? Secondly, the visual outcome of the sign comes out as an inverted cross which is diabolical in some way, as the longer side ends up from the Head section. any response to that?
Is it the stomach or the heart
Heart
In old testaments if you willing JESUS CHRIST to be crusified you must sign of the cross. if you like to nail him at cross and die you must sign of the cross.. now can you give a verse in the bible that support you
THEY'RE ALL IN ONE SO DONT SEPARATE THEM
it isn’t exactly a separation, for me thinking about it and naming the separate titles is appreciation! of each unique part. the Father on the throne! Christ at his right hand! the Holy Spirit as a river through the holy city, surrounded by 12 flourishing trees… and some day all 3 can be as one, living among us per the word. 😄 what is your warning so i may learn your perspective?
@@ravenj2400 I don't exactly know why Roman Catholics do the sign of the cross. Me myself, is a Roman Catholic and has been led to do sign of the cross every time we eat, or even pass a Catholic church. But a curiosity came to my mind, "Why do Roman Catholics is the only religion who does the sign of the cross?". I mean it's not even written in the bible right? I stopped doing the sign of the cross whenever I get the chance to not do it, like when my family is around me. Because my family is really religious and rosaries whenever they wake up and sleeps.
To begin with
Trinity holy spirt
Crusfic

Allah created his face Christian from the start ofthe earth

Like many truths, the full meaning has been lost and the making of the sign was changed. I suspect it first began with the heart. Our calling is to seek the face or presence of God. The journey was illustrated in the design of the tabernacle. Our walk passes through ever-narrowing entrances toward the Mercy Seat where, symbolically, the face of Jesus is covered by wings of cherubim. Remember how Adam lost his ability to meet with Jesus? Certainly Adam would have returned to that blessed place if it were not for the cherubim guarding the way. Today, we are still called. And praise God that in Jesus we have the grace of his love and his having died in our place for sin. He tells us that the royal commandment still stands. The Lord our God is One. He manifests himself in 3 persons and in the fearsome presence of God Almighty. We are to love him (1) with all our heart, (2) all our soul, (3) all our mind, and then...(4) all our might. As we see these gifts offered and ask, God changes us by enlightening these portions that make up our whole person. We are created in the image of God. If we were to make the sign of the cross in memory of his grace, we would begin with the heart. The soul is symbolized in scripture by the right shoulder. The mind is, of course, our forehead. The fourth blessing is on the renewed life in our blood. So we point to our belly as the place where new life begins. There is no power in symbolism, that's true. But there is great power in the thruths that those symbols teach us.
Thats not how Jesus teaches....jesus prayed like Muslims
And going a little farther he fell on his face and prayed, saying, “My Father, if it be possible, let this cup pass from me; nevertheless, not as I will, but as you will.”(Matthew 26:39)
BEANS ARE YUMMMMMMMMMMMMMMYYYYYYYYY
i love ✨beans✨
Kabala, who first adopted the symbol, represents the 4 elements: earth, air, fire water.
Christ is the Logos, the word which become flesh, is the 4 elements.
I also learn that the vertical symbol, the narrow way Jesus spike of, the kundalini which Jesus taught, represents the raising of the crism from the base to the skull or golgotha(where Jesus get crucified), which is the pineal gland in the head, where the resurrection occurs within us.
The lateral symbol represents both balance between the physical and Spiritual; also representative of the two eyes or thieves, and Jesus is in between which represents the 3rd eye -- the single eye, which when the crism, the oil, enters the 3rd eye, ones whole body shall be filled with light. This is anointing, as Christ is the anointed one, the christos.
You're completely way off in everything you're saying. This has nothing to do with Christianity. You need to get right with God. Jesus is the Way the Truth and the Life. Hinduism Kabala are darkness and a lies.
@@antonralph6947 No, Christianity is not original. It use to be called, "those of the way". Now today there's people like you who care more about your belief than the Truth.
Jesus never do that kind of sign, there is no evidence inside bible written you can allow to do such thing. Only church ask you to do so. You follow Jesus or church?
It's not ancient because the cross wasn't being used as a Christian symbol until 4th century. Before then it was a fish that Yeshua (aka Jesus) and he's followers used. It also wasn't being used in baptism back than as it was still a Jewish baptism as Yeshua was born and died Jewish and Christianity was a way of life not yet a church until after the year 100.
And to clarify the Crucifix is one of the worst and painful torture devices in history. He didn't volunteer sacrifice himself to it, as new Christians claimed. He was sentences by the Roman governor for being a menice. He would live to be a old man if romans weren't occupying his country at the time.
Learn your history and facts not the stories.
No gods
That’s beautiful, just don’t pray to Mary it’s idolatry and a blasphemy to God.
1 Timothy 2:5
Oh, You poor brainwashed Protestants who do NOT have the mental capacity to distinguish the difference between an IDOL; (A False God) or an IMAGE; (Which represents someone OR something) Almighty God Orders that Images be made! Ex.25:18; "2 Cherubims of Gold" Num.21:8-9; "Bronze Serpent" IMAGINE THAT! IMAGES of Something that us in Heaven and a Snake that is on earth! 1Kgs.6:23-35, 7:25-51, "The Temple in Jerusalem had IMAGES...Question? Is Mary, The Angels or Saints God's? The answer is NO! Thereby, Almighty God is NOT jealous of them. As usual! PROTESTANTS NEVER read the whole context, before, after or misinterpret it...Read from the beginning 1Tim.2:1-5; (1) URGES that petitions, and Thanksgiving be offered for all men. (2) Especially for Kings and those in authority...(3) PRAYER of this kind is GOOD and God Our Saviour is PLEASED WITH IT....GEE, God is pleased with it but PROTESTANTS are NOT! This way, Our prayers can be delivered to, (5) The One and ONLY Mediator in Heaven, just like it says in Rev.5:8, 8:3-4...Even with Incense...IMAGINE THAT! Remind your false Protestant preacher NOT to act as a Mediator when he asks you to PRAY for others! Keep in mind that in the Old Testament, Moses was the One and ONLY Mediator between God and the people!
be of faith. we are more than welcome to pray for the saints and ask their intercession i do it regularly. cloud of witnesses is lit
just not worship them, but you can ask God for the cloud of witnesses and elders to help guide us. i did…i didn’t feel evil for it
Sir discuss about 666
Read the Book of Revelation to learn more about the Mark of the Beast and NEVER receive it.
The sign of the cross meaning is to take away demons meaning why they use to do it inside the church is a safe place without demons inside why they keep doing it while jesus makes a example that praying without sign of the cross
its pagan origin . Christ died on a post the cross is the god Tamouz
but the person who did it at me said in the name of the father the son and the holy spirit, not tamouz. trying to figure out what it means when people do it at a stranger
He did an upsidedown cross like the Pope
Forgive me, but with all due respect, you have no clue what you're talking about. Firstly, the man in this video did not make an upside down sign of the cross,.. nor does the Pope (including any prior Pope), ever, ever, EVER make an upside down sign of the cross. Perhaps you were joking around or just being sarcastic, I'm not sure. But if you were serious then allow me to explain something. If you, or anyone makes an upside down sign of the cross, or if you see an upside down cross, that is an evil symbol that represents Satan....and those makeing an upside down sign (of the most Holy Cross of Jesus Christ), belong to Satan. So I truly hope you were just kidding around, although that's really not something to kid around about.
If you actually think the sign of the cross should be done any other way than the way this man and the Pope do it, then whoever taught you thai has basically taught you the sign of Satan. Just a word of advice: DON'T DO IT! ✝️✝️✝️
He didn't
Wrong
💌✝️🤩🇸🇬🥇☺️😊
I always sign of the cross so that i remember and in my mind my heart so i didnt make a bad.
I feel that when we do the sign of the cross is also the reminder as Jesus did , to Love God with our mind, body and soul. Forehead mind, Heart body, Shoulders the whole being , the Soul.
The Raven. Back and forth. To and fro. Wake up. You're being lied to.
can i ask what do you believe i am deceived over? i am sober minded in Christ and covered in the name of the Lord God Almighty, like it says, prepared for a thief in the night. oiled up haha. but my fate is predetermined, though i made my choice, the outcome is God’s choice now. what have i been deceived about in your opinion?
It's not in the doing, it's in the Done.
It took me many years to realize that my Catholic rituals were about religion more than Jesus. Most of what I was trained to do did not come from the bible, but from man. God does not care about ritual or sacraments. He provided us with instruction through His word. Anything outside of His word is created by man. Please read and reread your Gospel until you understand it. We are saved the minute we turn our lives over to Christ and live as He asks us to. Everything else, is a distraction from this. God bless everyone reading this.
Read the Old Testament
@@PP-tj9xm could you be a bit more specific. I do read the Old Testament.
@@andsoitgoes1142 then you should know that God does care about rituals and indeed Judaism is heavily ritualistic and Jesus would have practiced those rituals as a Jew. The majority of rituals in the Catholic church stem from Judaism.
@@PP-tj9xm I agree that there are many rituals under the old covenant, which included sacrifices of perfect lambs. But Jesus became the perfect lamb of the new covenant when He sacrificed Himself for all of us. We are under the new covenant. The Apostle Paul repeatedly tells us that gentiles are not subject to the Law of the Jews. So, it would not make any sense for the church to be under Jewish tradition. I remember the last time I went to mass, when the bishop came to our church. He kept removing his cap( can’t remember what it is called) and putting it back on during the mass. That almost insignificant act changed everything for me. I really don’t mean to be irreverent or sacrilegious, but I am just telling you how I felt. I thought, “ this is not about Jesus. This is a show. None if this comes from Jesus’ instructions, except for communion”. Most of the catechism is from men, not from God. So, that is when I made a commitment to study the bible and really learn what God wants from us, not what an organization is telling us to do and what rites we must perform to earn God’s grace. Salvation is an undeserved gift. Gifts have no strings and they cannot be earned. All that is needed is belief, love, and repentance. That is the message of the New Testament. We all become saints when Christ deems us worthy. God bless you.
@@andsoitgoes1142 so, you are ignoring the OT then. You reference the Bible as your only source of inspiration but ignore the OT. God does expect rituals and the rituals of the Catholic Church have been handed down from the custom and practice of those who knew Jesus - the Apostles and by their associate , St Paul. By all means follow whatever path fulfils your needs but please equally respect the wishes of the followers of the One, Holy, Catholic, Apostolic Church.
Cross left side
Baptise top
What about the two people crucify same as Jesus?
Our lord Jesus Christ makes a example to do praying it’s praying without sign of the cross
Jesus taught the Apostles many, many things besides what is NOT written in the Bible, Jn.20:30, 21:25. The Sign of the Cross is just one of the many Sacramentals given to us from the Catholic Apostles: Crucifixes, Holy Water, The Sign of the Cross, The APOSTLES CREED, etc, etc. Thereby our teachings comes to us From Jesus's One and ONLY Catholic Church founded along with the Apostles in 33A.D, and Not any of the over 70,000 False, Man Made, Reformed, Heretical, Protestant, Religions and Churches that exist today.
revelations says let all who wanna receive it, say COME! (that’s not verbatim, read rev 22:12-21)
If you traced a line. Between the points you touched on your body. Its not exactly the shape of the cross i would expect😮. Cross bar is lower than half way.
The sign of the cross is not mentioned in the bible but baptism is a commandment of God, signing of the cross is not biblical
Who even cares about this? If God chose a cross to be the sacrificial instrument by which the means of salvation becomes available to mankind, then that should be enough to honor it.
Its custom and practice from the early followers of Jesus and a fitting way for a Christian to behave.
@@PP-tj9xm The Catholic Encyclopedia says: "From the earliest period it has been employed in all exorcism and conjugations as a weapon against the spirits of darkness." The sign of the cross is not Biblical nor fitting for true Christians.
Neither is the sinner’s prayer. Please find it for me?
The heresy of Protestantism has invented things like rapture and altar call and that doesn't bother a protestant one bit of being unbiblical!!! Many protestants don't even follow the central belief of eating of the body and drinking the blood of Christ. In fact they scoff at it like the ones who left Jesus on account of preaching it (John 6:35-62). If you had your way like Martin Luther you probably would have removed even that from the Bible!!!
