- There's always something you can do even when you don't feel like doing anything. It's been a rough three weeks but that just means some of the little things get attention. It all adds up in the long run. This week was hardware week and thanks to the internet, we think we have a solution to the missing keys and broken locks.
This once abandoned Victorian mansion is undergoing a massive restoration. Designed by noted architect Nicholas Clayton, this Galveston historical treasure is slowly back to life. Restoration of this historic house is not easy, and the extensive yard and gardens add to the complexity and expense. Preservation of the original features is high on the priority list. Follow the journey from start to finish. It’s a tough, hot, sweaty, and very expensive road but worth every minute of it.

No need to apologize I just like seeing you and hearing about what’s happening with the house. 😊😊
Thanks. It has been a rough few weeks. I'll be glad to get back to my happy place!
Girl you can do anything! 💗
Don't I wish - I certainly will try almost anything.😜
On a sunny day lay the doors on your patio/driveway with the bowed side up for an hour or two to let them slowly heat and they will sag back. Or, use a hairdryer on low and SLOWLY warm the glass and lead. I've straightned many antique windows that way. Retired Lighthose Glassworks.
Thanks for the tips. I was wondering abour using a hair dryer. I think if I had put them in the sun this summer the glass would have melted.😜 Fortunately, this seems to be the only one that has a real problem and it's not really that bad. All of the doors were in remarkably good shape.
Your hair looks so pretty! Usually we see you in the midst of hot, sweaty work with it tied back. The style is so cute! Glad you were able to find some suitable latch replacements. They are really attractive!
Busted. I'd even taken a shower and put on make-up. Jo and I were going to a volunteer reception for another charity that I'm president of and Jo does some work for. We even wore dresses and fancy shoes. Definitely not my normal "work" day look.
Wonderful , wonderful video.
Thank you.
Glad you enjoyed it It was all I could muster. It's a busy week ahead, I'm mentally over being sick. I hope the rest of my body cooperates.
Good to see all the important details!
Funny story about this. Jo found the key today.
That is the way it always works!@@leaguekempnerhouse
Another great video. Hopefully your feeling better and dress warm now that the Blustery Winter Weather has hit Houston/Galveston Region. With the temperature below 90 is sounds like time for a Hot Chocolate reward!
Mmmm. Hot chocolate. I like the way you think.
I love hot chocolate!
So much going on! Glad that it has finally cooled down below 100!!! Those doors are beautiful, so glad that there was minimal damage to them. 😊 Take care!
The weather has been so nice this last week. It makes such a difference working at the house. We are so lucky that all the doors are in great shape. I think this is the only one with a real problem and it isn't even noticable when hanging up. I just wouldn't want it to bow out any more.
Pray you're feeling better very soon! Enjoy seeing the bits and pieces as well as the large projects. It all counts toward the finished project.🥰🙏
Thanks, I get so impatient being sick. I don't handle sitting around very well. I'm happy to have little projects on hand to fiddle with. They all have to get done sooner or later.
I can’t wait to see how the house looks all Hallowed-out.
Great update 2x👍
Thanks 👍
Love the brass sash lifts! Can"t wait to see those windows when they're all done
I tihnk the study/library will be the easiest room to get finished. Once the electrical work is done it's mostly cleaning and putting up wallpaper. I can't wait to see it finished. I was shocked at how easy it was to clean the brass.
I have seen other YT restorers boil brass hardware in vinegar to remove tarnish and restore the shine.
As strange as this may sound, I've never had to polish brass. I'm going to look that up.
@@leaguekempnerhouse Sounds wise; brass is tedious and messy work, especially if one has had to let go of the Servants. Mind you, the shine is very satisfying at the conclusion.
Great information. Love your work and enthusiasm and work ethic. Great videos!
Glad you enjoy it! I am so excited to get back to the house and see what's been going on.
Interesting stuff
I love all the little details of the house.
Go Janie ! 🙌🏻
Glad that you’re feeling better.
I absolutely hate colds...
I become a Grumpalump and go into little boy mode.
😕
Much love ❤️.
I love your honesty. I hate being sick, I get very frustrated just sitting around.
Feel better! Thanks for the update: bit by bit, you are moving forward!
Thank you. I'm glad it was just a cold and nothing else. It did force me to stay home and get some of the little stuff done.
It's always something.
❤❤❤
There were some fun things!
Feelbetter soon! If I lived there I would love to help you polish the brass!
Thanks, I think I'm over the hump. I've never polished brass before - I wish you were here too!
I like going to antique/junk stores & especially the big markets in Round Top, Warrenton,. I always see bins & bins of old hardware - I’ll keep a look-out for matching pieces. Always big postcard venders too - always have about Galveston, so that will go on my watchlist too!
Your timing is perfect. Heather is working on a spread sheet showing what we are still missing. If you send me an email at info@leaguekempnerhouse.org I can send you a copy. These missing pieces have to be out there somewhere.
Hi Janie my grandfather collected everything including antique postcards. I can pick up one for you, from my Mom, early next year. It has Ball High School on it.
That would be awesome. Ball High School was named after Nellie Ball League's father. I just found out part of the original high school is still standing. It was incorporated into a new building.
@@leaguekempnerhouse Wow that's so neat!
You can send those handles out to get copied at a brass maker. There is one in port Townsend in Washington. Called the port Townsend Foundry.
We thought about that but have priced that option yet. We may have to do that for some of the missing pieces. I wonder how expensive it is.
I suspect it bowed because the putty inside the lead profile degraded. If so, you will notice that the glass has some movement. In this case, the best thing to do would be to remove the stained glass from the frame, place it on the wooden stained glass board and perform a complete restoration. In this case, I think it is enough to follow these steps:
1) Cut a 3/4" or 1" board, which is completely smooth, so as not to damage the glass (that is the thickness that stained glass boards usually have).
2) You place the stained glass on the board and leave it for a while to return to its place, as you said. You can try to apply a little pressure to see if it gives way. Lead is very malleable, so there is no problem in pressing gently. After placing it on the wood, you cover it completely with putty. Do not use commercial putty because it can cause problems. Prepare your own putty with chalk powder and linseed oil (it's been the formula for centuries). You add the oil to the putty and integrate everything until you have a consistency like that of cake dough, or a little less thick. This is so that it can be inserted into the space between the glass and the lead profile. You start in that area and help by gently pushing with a brush. To give it the best you have to add a little graphite to the putty.
3) Cover the putty with a layer of wood sawdust and let it sit for one or two hours.
4) With a natural bristle brush, gently and slowly remove the sawdust.
5) Very carefully, with a wooden stake, press the edge of the profile longitudinally, so that the glass is firmer.
6) It is good to add another little sawdust to finish polishing the profile and the glass.
Once the work on one side is finished, you repeat the procedure on the other side.
The stained glass windows are not washed, they are cleaned with the layer of soft putty, with the procedure described. ( From Montevideo, Uruguay, South America).
Thanks for the detailed advice. I'm going to try it with this one.
😊

Thanks for the detailed description of how to flatten the glass. It seems like something easy to do as long as I take my time and don't get in a hurry. I will let you know how it turns out.
Those budgies need a bigger cage with places for them to get away from each other, better perches and more toys which they can destroy.
That's not their regular cage, just our babysitting cage. They have a big cage at their house. They are spoiled rotten.
Don’t do paranormal!!! You end up opening portals and it will get haunted!!
We don't want that!
I'm sorry to hear you had to cut your vacation short and got a cold. Hopefully, the rest of the month is better. Good luck with the upcoming events. The cooler weather will certainly help. 😊❤️🤍💙
Thanks, stuff happens and you just have to go with it. I am so excited about the cooler weather, it's a game changer for getting work done and for opening for tours. I'm looking forward to getting back in there and making some real progress in the house.
