    I think Swedes must think English is so easy, having just one type of noun! However, I love that Swedish doesn't conjugate verbs! The funniest sentence I learnt is "får får får, farfar?" haha. Thanks Daniella.

    I emigrated with my parents when I was 6 years old from Sweden to the States. My parents always spoke Swedish at home but I never paid attention to when they used ett or en. When I got older and went to visit Sweden I would always be shy that I would say it wrong, not that they would have minded. Your video explaining this has really been helpful. A big thank you 🇸🇪🤗

      Yes, you are not alone. En/ett is hard for many people, even for those who have been speaking Swedish for years. There is no clear logic behind en/ett so it is very tricky!

  • @queenofwales_

    Putting “en” or “ett” at the end of the words just opened a whole new world to me. 😁 When I started to go through the very basics of Swedish in DuoLingo, I kind of saw it works the same as English “a”, “an” and “the”, but as a Latvian by heart couldn’t really understand where this goes. 😅 In Latvian we also have divided nouns in two genders, so, in the beginning I thought maybe it’s that, but then again Wikipedia said, Swedish don’t do it the same way Latvian does. So, it’s kind of English way, but no. 😆 Also, was asking one of my Swedish friends how this thing works, and he said, he doesn’t know, it just works. 😃 But your way of explaining it surely works both ways and makes it more logical, not like it’s a random thing that just happens to a language, which surely has to have a certain system and rules like every other language. 👀 Thanks for that, will try to keep it in my mind! 🙌🏻
    Edit: Also, isn’t it, like, ett or en might also depend on if a word starts with a vowel or consonant? I’m just guessing, trying to find my ways to look at the regular things I’ve noticed in the language so far, and I’ve seen pretty often already that, if in Swedish one word ends with a consonant and the next one starts with a consonant, the previous in the speach can disappear or it can change the next one in the pronounciation. I mean, this is a an art already, sorry for silly questions, I just saw the patterns in DuoLingo and since it wasn’t giving any explanations, I just follow the patterns. Usually they don’t let me do a mistake. 😅

    • @FunSwedish
      @FunSwedish  3 года назад +5

      Happy to hear you found the explanation helpful and logical 😁.
      Native speakers are often not aware of how and why they say the things they say. So it is hard for most Swedes to go into the details of grammar and structures.
      Ps: Not real good way of knowing if a word is en or ett just by looking at it 😅 The logic ends there 😅.

    I started doing Swedish on Duolingo a few months ago - I visited Gothenburg a couple of years ago and loved it, so decided to try learning Swedish so I could speak with the locals if I go back (a bit unnecessary, because everyone speaks such great English there). I’ve just found this channel, and it’s a great help. Makes a difference to hear an actual person speaking Swedish rather than AI. I speak some French - the ‘en / ett’ thing is just like ‘le / la’ in French. There’s no way to work it out.
    I wish I’d started learning Swedish sooner, and devoted as much time to Swedish as I have French over the years - as an Anglophone, I find Swedish easier than French, but I speak better French because of the time I’ve spent on it. Thank you for your help.

      I'm French, and when I watched this video I immediately thought of how we have a similar issue in French with feminine and masculine words, just like you pointed out. There's no rule why one word should be one gender or another, you're just supposed to know it by heart. It really feels very random sometimes. Like when out of the blue they decided "covid" and "corona" should be feminine despite the fact that everyone had been using those words as masculine for months. It's ridiculous.
      Anyway, I'm finding that knowing French and (especially) English is making it easier for me to learn Swedish, as there are so many similarities. But also quite a few differences and challenges (like letters that are not pronounced AT ALL like you would expect--"chef" is probably the one that threw me off the most LOL).
      Still, I'm enjoying the journey. It's a cool language.
      My own favorite words so far are "vi ses" and "smörgås" and "behöver".

    I always have to do a little mental gymnastics to get the indefinite right... the definite version is usually pretty obvious (or I remember it easier)... so when I want to say "an apple," my mind takes a little trip to get there: äpplen or äpplet > oh it's ett > ett äpple! I still prefer that over having to conjugate verbs 7 different ways (like German) haha!

XD. Certainly makes the language more fun though.

So far they have lots of similarities with English in terms of how some words sound, but man are they different from Greek! (my native language.) It's been years since I've learned a new language and I'm kinda afraid! What really helped me in English was having constant stimulation around in English (via video games, films, music etc). Can you guys recommend some good Swedish movies or even music with Swedish lyrics? (preferably metal, but I'm not gonna be picky on this one!)

    English is not lazy, it's a pragmatic language with a very pragmatic grammar, I grew up speaking Spanish and then learned English at an early age, the fact that in Spanish (as well as French, the other language I speak) objects have gender is illogical, a table is a table, no gender there

    In English grammar, obestämd är indefinite, inte undefinitive. Bestämd är definite, inte definitive. Man säger Ad'-jec-tive with the stress on the first syllable, inte ad-jec'-tive. Akta att du säger fur-ther (voiced th) och inte fur-der. Annars har du hjälpt mig jätte mycket. Jag älskar Fun Swedish!

      Agree, it will make you sound foreign "misusing" en/ett but it does not (normally) make the sentence intelligible. Most times context will solve the possible misinterpretations anyways.

    Muchas gracias. Acabo de comenzar con el aprendizaje del sueco (por mero gusto), y este video me ha ayudado un montón. Tenía serios problemas con el uso de estas dos palabras. Me encanta este canal, la forma en que explicas los temas, a alegría y empatía que pones en ello. Además me he enterado por otro lado que también hablas español, por eso te escribo en español, ahora mismo me resulta más fácil que el sueco para expresarme, pero todo se andará. ¿Algún canal en youtube donde pueda familiarizarme con la escucha del sueco?. Muchas gracias. Un cordial saludo.

    So I'm learning Swedish with Duolingo but it can be a bit frustrating as they never really explain anything, they just teach you specific words and sentences. It's great to learn the basics, but I'm often left scratching my head.
    For instance, I just learned that "the bird" isn't "fågelen" as I would have assumed from this video, but "fågeln". Also, "the soup" is "soppan" (not "soppaen"). For the latter I thought maybe it was to avoid having two vowels in a row... but then I learn "the tea" is "teet" and "the bee" is "biet" as expected--so nope, not a vowel thing.
    Now I'm wondering if there is a specific rule to explain these or are they just exceptions that need to be learned by heart? Though there seem to be quite a few (krabban, spindeln, ankan, oljan, etc.)
    To anyone who answers this: tack så mycket!

    • @FunSwedish
      @FunSwedish  4 месяца назад +1

      Hej! Yes, we agree. Even though Duolingo is better than nothing it doesn't explain all the rules. We do explain them and practice them in our video courses.
      elansutbildning.teachable.com/courses/
      In this course for beginners we talk about words that end with "el" such as fågel and why they become "fågeln". Here is the link. elansutbildning.teachable.com/courses/enrolled/1010365
      If you liked this youtube video (and all our youtube videos) then you will love our video courses. Apart from a lot of explinations you will also get acess to a lot of useful material so that you can actually understand and talk to Swedes.

    • @queenofwales_

      Spotify is full of them Swedish songs and Swedish playlists, which doesn’t consist from worldwide blockbuster Swedish artists only. 😁 Or, if you prefer RUclips over Spotify, you can try to find smth over here as well.
      I’ve been adding kind of a lot of Swedish music to my Liked Songs in past 2 years, and from what I’ve got I would suggest Kent, they’re kind of popsy, and, I’ve heard, they were a huge thing locally in Sweden. My personal favorites from them are “Sverige”, “Den Sista Sången” and “Tänd På”, kind of popsy, kind of chill. But suggest you to check it out on your own. Lately I have fell for Veronica Maggio’s “Solen Har Gått Ner”, it just goes on repeat for me. 😆 Found out she has a lot of nice songs that I plainly like, cuz I don’t understand much of Swedish, it’s just amazing music for my liking on it’s own. 😅
      But I would really suggest you to start a Swedish music playlist on Spotify, you can start with these examples, and when the playlist is there containing at least few songs, Spotify will immediatelly give you suggestions of smth similar, so, you can also go through the artists and find smth that you would like the most. :)

    • @FunSwedish

      Good question! If the word ends with an N like Fin then we don't add an extra n. We just leave it like it is "En fin bok" but we need to add the t if it is refering to an ett-word "Ett fint språk".
